Event planner uses skills
to create homeless feeds
• By Emily Moorhouse
A COLLABORATION between
food truck owners and an event
planner has ensured homeless
people around the city have full
bellies.
Aranui’s Nyran Stanton is the
brains behind the homeless feeds,
after the idea came to him when
he woke at 4am one morning in
January.
Being an event planner with
no events due to Covid, Stanton
wondered what he could do to put
his expertise to use.
“I thought if I can’t do events
maybe there’s some people in the
community that could benefit
from something,” he said. “I
thought why not go out and do
some homeless feeds.”
He began brainstorming
straightaway and came up with
Demon Angel Charities, the
demon aspect representing the
addictions and flaws humans
have while the angel aspect balances
it out with the goodness of
humanity.
Stanton called up homeless
shelters and went to Christchurch
City Mission to announce his
idea, as well as talking to a few
homeless people on the street.
In two weeks he had raised
$458 from donations thanks to
a Facebook page he’d set up to
promote his idea.
He spent the money at
Linwood Seafood, putting on his
first successful homeless feed at
the end of January.
First, Stanton walked to
Christchurch City Mission to
hand out some fish and chips,
before heading over to Latimer
Square to find a group of
homeless people waiting for him.
He handed out the food and
they all sat down together and
shared their stories, something
Stanton said was “very cool.”
From then on, Stanton has
worked on building up his
charity to the point of hosting
a homeless feed almost every
Thursday.
“I think people kind of
appreciate that we’ve all had
situations in our life where we’ve
needed a feed from somewhere,”
he said.
“I think everyone has been
pretty good about it.”
Wooden godwits for you to find
• By Emily Moorhouse
TAKING A walk through
Southshore will reveal 57
wooden godwits, painted by the
community.
What started off as a small
community painting day has
spiralled into a great godwit hunt
as locals scout out the brightly
painted godwits scattered
throughout the area.
Southshore Residents Association
member Maria Smolar
helped organise the initiative,
alongside fellow members Liz
Yuki and Annette Bolton.
Smolar said the project
stemmed from the association
wanting to put together
something exciting after events
had been cancelled because of
Covid.
Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai
Trust manager Tanya Jenkins
suggested giving the association
some wooden godwits, made
with the help of Linwood Menz
Shed volunteers.
The idea was to give the godwits
to members of the community
to paint themselves, which
soon turned into painting sessions
held at Common Ground.
The sessions attracted roughly
20 people, including Coastal
Ward councillor Celeste Donovan
and Coastal-Burwood
Community Board member Jo
Zervos.
Once people had painted their
godwit while on a bike ride.
godwits they put them around
the estuary edge and Rocking
Horse Rd for others to see.
Soon after, Smolar was
approached by a local mother
who suggested the idea of a
godwit hunt. She had created a
map for people to mark off when
they spotted the birds.
“We love it,” Smolar said.
“I didn’t expect it to become
this big thing, which has been
really awesome.”
Jenkins said the trust has done
similar activities to this in the
past but the Southshore Residents
Association had gone all
out and made it even better than
she could have hoped for.
“It is a roaring success,” she
said.
“We had to extend it and reprint
more maps because our
residents were having so much
fun.”
Smolar said some godwits
were still waiting to be found
and described the hunt as
“intergenerational” as it’s not
only kids who are participating,
but families and adults too.
“It’s just been really wonderful
to see people being involved and
being connected,” Smolar said.
“It’s really a community effort
and it’s been so much fun.”
Dreams into Reality: Our Return
From Linwood High School 1954 to
Te Aratai College 2022, our school
continues its proud history.
We are farewelling Linwood College at Ōtākaro. We
honour the fact that there has been education on the
Avonside site for 102 years. The final days of our
small contribution to this legacy is now, the end of
term 1.
In term 2 we return to Aldwins Rd and our completely
rebuilt and stunning new school. Te Aratai College
is inspiring from the 650 seat theatre-standard
auditorium to the sunny student centre and the
student-friendly courtyards. Our design is for
personalised student success and reflects the
new name gifted to us by Ngāi Tūāhuriri, Te Aratai
College, Pathway to the Sea.
Reflecting this, our learning and classroom design
is based on responsiveness to the needs of the
students at that moment. We have classrooms of the
standard, time-honoured size but with the flexibility to
open up. This is because there are occasions when
learning can be more open but equally there are times
for some students when this is a learning disaster. Te
Aratai College also has smaller rooms for students
who learn best in reduced, very quiet environments,
and bigger spaces for when learning can be shared
and for larger student gatherings. This deliberate
design assists staff and students to respond to the
many factors that personalise success.
Of course, new buildings alone do not necessarily
improve education. The relationship with the
teacher - he tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata -
and the personalisation of learning are the key
for this. However, there is also no doubt that new,
purpose-built buildings and spaces that arise
from these community values of relationships and
personalisation contribute hugely to student success.
This is Te Aratai College.
We look forward to welcoming our community into
their school. Please see our website for information
about tours for our partner primary schools, past
pupils and staff, and other friends.
Food trucks help to feed the homeless
• From page 1
The 45-year-old admitted he
had a bit of a rough upbringing,
having an absent father due to
his rock and roll career, making
Stanton’s home life a bit hectic.
Born in Australia, Stanton said
would often bunk school and
take chips to feed the homeless
people in public parks.
When he was nine, Stanton
moved to New Zealand to
live with his uncle and shifted
around a bit before settling in
Aranui.
Stanton said he knows what
it’s like to live in poverty so can
appreciate helping out those that
need it, especially when mental
health is involved.
“There’s a lot of satisfaction
talking to someone who’s got
SPEED LIMITS will be reduced
on 20 streets in the Avondale
area to create a slow speed
neighbourhood and a safer
environment for residents.
The decision comes after
consultation with residents
revealed complaints about
vehicles travelling too fast
through the area.
The city council agreed on
the recommendation from the
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board to reduce the speed limit
mental health problems over
food,” he said.
“It’s quite interesting actually,
even as a curiosity standpoint,
and a giving standpoint so
they can talk to you without
judgement.”
After a few feeds, Stanton
began reaching out to food
trucks to see if they wanted to
participate at a subsidised rate
from money he raised.
He recently had Tracey
Cashin from Tracey’s Grub on
Hubs food truck reach out to
him expressing her interest in
providing food for the homeless.
Cashin said she enjoys the
experience of helping others and
has helped Stanton on several
occasions before.
“We’ve probably fed maybe 20
from 50km/h to 40km/h on all
roads bounded by Anzac Dr,
Wainoni Rd, Hulverstone Dr,
Avondale Rd and Breezes Rd.
The consultation also
highlighted issues around
antisocial driver behaviour.
City council staff are currently
working on proposals to deter
this type of driver behaviour in
the future.
City council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said improving safety
to 25,” Cashin said. “Last time
I was here we fed 64 people,
they come and they go, they
come and sit down and have
something to eat, fill their bellies
and then off they go,” she said.
Stanton has plans to continue
growing his charity and has a
goal of raising $200 a month
through his Givealittle page to
cover food costs.
He said putting the feeds on is
extremely satisfying and hopes it
is making a positive difference in
people’s lives.
on roads is a priority for the city
council.
“Everyone should be able to
get where they’re going safely
whether they’re walking, cycling,
driving, motorcycling or using
public transport,” he said.
“We have heard from Avondale
residents that the current
50km/h speed limit is not safe or
appropriate for the area and that
they generally travel well below
the limit for safety reasons,”
Wright said.
The Marshland Hall Trust,
run by Coastal-Burwood
Community Board chairman
Kelly Barber, Sian Ruth and
Adele Cornelius is looking
to purchase a piece of land to
build what will be a space for
the community to share.
And to get the community
on board with its idea, the
trust has been hosting trailer
days over the weekends.
Barber, Ruth and Cornelius
take two trailers to the
Marshland and Prestons areas
for people to drop off rubbish
before taking it to the dump,
the costs being covered by the
trust.
Barber said people that have
dropped off rubbish come
from all over the subdivisions
and have been “absolutely
stoked” and they usually fill
two trailers.
“It’s perfect because they
drive down with just a few
things in their boot, just the
things you’d want to take
to the tip but you probably
wouldn’t make a special trip
for it,” he said.
The trust previously had a
building at 430 Marshland
Rd, but received a payout
after earthquakes damaged
the building. The trust sold
the land it was occupying last
year.
Now, with the money from
its previous space, the trust
has begun consulting with the
community about what they
would like to see.
Some suggestions included
a basketball court, a stage,
meeting rooms and the idea
of hosting functions such as
weddings was even thrown in
the mix.
Barber said the trust wants
the facility to be self-funding
and have offices to rent so
people will be using it all the
Mai!
We made it whānau, it
is the last week of Term
1! What a challenging 11
weeks it has been!! I want
to thank our kaimahi
for their dedication and
commitment over the
past 11 weeks. It has not
been easy for them as
they have coped with
the stress and challenge
of balancing home and
school life. Like many of you our kaimahi
have had to isolate themselves with
Omicron.
I want to congratulate our ākonga on
their achievements this term. Even with
all of the disruption they continue to
strive for success and excellence. Our
Newsletter this week is full of examples of
resilient young people who refuse to allow
the challenges thrown at us in this COVID
affected world to get in the way of their
goals, dreams and aspirations!
Early in Term 2 we will be revisiting
some of the Haeata systems that have
been interrupted due to COVID-19. The
shared understandings, agreements and
expectations that underpin our success
as a kura are rooted in our Values and
Dispositions and are reflected in the
following non-negotiables; Tae ā-tinana/
Attendance, Whanonga/
Behaviour, Taiao/
Environment, Paearu mahi/
Performance, and Kakahu
Kura/Uniform.
A message to ākonga:
• We have to attend kura
because Aotearoa New
Zealand law says we must;
• We have to behave
because if we don’t we
interrupt the ako/learning of
others;
• We have to look after our
environment because if we
don’t we all suffer;
• We have to perform because to not
perform is to fail;
• We have to wear our uniform with
pride because not to so disrespects our
whānau, community and each other.
On Thursday, 14th April 2022 we
will be holding our annual ANZAC
commemoration service. You are warmly
invited to attend at 12.30pm and take
your ākonga home afterwards. Kura will
close at 2.30pm on that day.
Thank you again for all of your support for
Haeata - stronger together.
Haeata Sports Performance Programme
Update by Te Iwingaro Wairau:
Haeata Sports Programme has been running coaching sessions for the junior ākonga, from New
Entrants to Year 6. Through these sessions, the Sports Programme ākonga are gaining coaching
experience, they have displayed Tuakana-Teina and helped the Kaiako in Hikuawa & Kaunuku,
but more importantly have kept the junior ākonga healthy, active and fit.
They have been focusing on skills that will be incorporated into one event, the Haeata Olympics
which will be held on Tuesday the 12th of April. The throwing events include the ‘Chicken
Throw’, the ‘Noodle Throw’ and the ‘Tennis ball throw’. We also have hurdles and the 20m,
40m & 60m sprints.
Photography Update by
Michelle McConnell:
A HUGE thank you to Canon New Zealand for their generous donation of cameras for our NCEA
Photography programme. They are currently familiarising themselves with using the cameras and have
been taking a few photos around kura to explore different settings, lighting and angles. Our ākonga
already love how professional their work is looking with the new cameras and will be able to work on
their photography portfolios with confidence next term! Here are some photos taken by our ākonga.
Performing Arts Feature: Caoimhe
Hungerford - Head Girl/ Māreikura
Being Head Girl, while working towards your NCEA Level 3 for entry
into University and actively participating in kura activities, is not an easy
task. Then add 7-11 hours spent on dancing a week into the mix and
this is where you will meet Caoimhe Hungerford.
Caoimhe started doing Ballet at the age of six and she added
competitive Hip-Hop at 8 years old to her repertoire. As a teenager
she started contemporary dance and later fell in love with KPOP.
When asked about her love for dance, she said: “Why I love it is a
hard question. I’ve done it for as long as I can remember, so if I were
to stop, my life would feel so empty and lazy, ya know? I love it cause
it’s just so normal to me. Like when I’m brushing my teeth, there’s
almost always a song playing in my head and I’m subconsciously
choreographing it.”
Caoimhe loves the final product of ballet, the emotion of
contemporary dance, the fun of Hip-Hop and enjoys the difficulty and “craziness” of KPOP. She
has become a talented choreographer as well. She teaches dance classes and she will be the
choreographer of the HCC Dance Crew, starting in term 2.
On her future in dance she replied: “Dance will always be
part of my future but probably not as a career. I plan to
study film production and maybe go into the dance/music
video side of that. While I’m planning this, I occasionally
submit dance auditions to companies just as a “what if?”. It
is my dream to perform on stage for as long as I can, but
it’s a hard industry to do well in and make a living out of.”
She is inspired by choreographers like Bada Lee and a
group called 3RACHA. On her motivation for working
so hard she said: “I don’t really have a motto, but when it
gets hard or I’m slowing down a bit, I’m just like ‘someone
else has it much harder than you so get up bro’.” She
continued by stating: “My greatest accomplishment in
dance is that I’m still going and that I haven’t quit. When
people see me limping or injured they’re like “take a
break” or “just stop dancing man” but I have to keep
going. My body may be bruised but I have strapping tape
to hold me together:)”.
May the world be your stage and gratification be your
applause Caoimhe! Thank you for sharing a glimpse of
your world with us.
