Established in 2002, CryoCord was
conceived from the talents, skills, and
vision of a dedicated group of visionary
medical and investment professionals. It
all began when Dr K. Y. Then (Chief
Technical Officer) and Academician
Emeritus Professor Dr Cheong Soon Keng
(Medical Director) identified a need for
stem cells preservation in our region,
which subsequently led to their concept
of a premium stem cell cryopreservation
bank in Malaysia.
Today, CryoCord has progressively grown
to become one of the largest and most
comprehensive private stem cell facilities
in Southeast Asia, specialising in long term
human stem cell and tissue
cryopreservation.
“When I graduated from medical school
in the ’70s, it never dawned on me that
the umbilical cord stems cells can yield at
least two types of stem cells, one for
curing blood cancers, the other for
repairing damaged organs,” says
Academician Emeritus Professor Dr
Cheong Soon Keng, Medical Director of
CryoCord Group.
CryoCord started with processing and
banking cord blood stem cells in just a
class 100 cleanroom to culturing various
cells, including Mesenchymal Stem Cells
(MSCs) in 10 cleanrooms. Operating from
the company’s wholly owned and purposebuilt
laboratory in Cyberjaya, their current
facilities now serve a suite of MSCs
processing and storage derived from the
umbilical cord, bone marrow, dental pulp
and adipose tissue. CryoCord has also
expanded their services to Indonesia with
a fully operational laboratory.
What Are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are one of the most miraculous
elements of the human body. These cells
have the unique ability to multiply
themselves, often throughout the life
of a human. For infants, baby stem cells
are undifferentiated “master” cells that
differentiate into other cell types to form
the brain, nerves, muscles, and other
body parts.
