FROM THE HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL Week 8 of Term 3 is another busy week with much happening and many events to look forward to before the end of term. The student free day on Monday was used by staff to work further with Mrs Marianne Hughes from Catholic Education on the development and preparation for implementation of the current mandated Religious Education programme, Made in the Image of God. Teachers worked in teams to explore optimal ways to incorporate the familiar and the new into appropriate year-level units and hence develop a scope and sequence plan. Many of the topics are familiar and involve small changes from past programmes. You will have read over the past few weeks Dr Greaves’ overviews and introductions to the new document. Our Year 3s travelled to the Senior School last Wednesday for Reconciliation. It was pleasing to see a number of parents assisting and providing support to the event and to the students as they embark on the journey through Sacraments of Initiation. Last Thursday our Year 4s went to Victor Harbour to explore ideas for Healthy Cities and sustainable living. This week Year 2s headed to the Zoo and Receptions and Year 1s had a visit from Delta Dog. Parents with students at the IEY will have received the Vacation Care Programme. I remind those parents with students who will still be 5 years old at the 14th of October that the centre is licensed for 5 year olds and hence they can be booked in for Vacation Care at the IEY in the coming term break. Those intending to use this service (for 3 to 5 year olds) will need to book soon to ensure a place and to assist with planning. Before School Care is provided should your child need to be dropped off before 8:15am. It is important that students who arrive at school are in the care of an adult. Those with sport or music tuition before school or those whose parents remain with them until the play bell at 8:15am are in such care. All others need to be in Out of School Hours Care. Any students arriving before 8:15am should be booked in and go straight to OSHC. Students not in supervised care in the school yard before yard duty commences will be escorted to OSHC. Life Education classes provided through the Life Ed Van ceased this week with all year levels having accessed sessions focussed on a range of Life Education topics. As recently advised, teachers are currently working on Class Placement proposals for 2012. The goals of this include achieving balance in terms of overall numbers, gender, learning needs and social dynamics. Significant effort goes into achieving class arrangements that are most conducive to a good learning environment. Speech Day next term approaches. This will involve our Year 3 to Year 6 students being transported to the Convention Centre to participate in the day with all our Secondary Students and many parents. Thank you again all shoppers who are supporting the docket programmes to obtain equipment for the school, and to Mrs Karen Murphy for her generous efforts to oversee this. We have even had some Old Scholars generously consider us and send in dockets! Thank you also to all our many volunteers and, as we transit from Winter Sport and look ahead to summer sport I wish to express thanks to our sporting coaches for their generous work. It is the generosity and commitment of these volunteer parents, old scholars and teaching staff that enables our students to access a wide range of co- curricular experiences. With the 10th anniversary of September the 11th 2001, there have been many ceremonies and much reflection on the past decade. Our world is a beautiful place, but there is much that needs to be improved. In speaking of his country, Nelson Mandela said: “If there are dreams about a beautiful South Africa, there are also roads that lead to their goal. Two of these roads could be named Goodness and Forgiveness”. When one feels wronged, it might seem hard to forgive. Children in a game may accidentally hurt a friend or perhaps bump them a little harder than intended. There can be a tendency to respond in kind or there can be a decision to forgive. Retaliating or responding in kind usually leads to escalation and division. Being big enough to choose to absorb and forgive can lead to a more beautiful world. How many times should one forgive? As Jesus said to Peter: ‘Not just seven, but seventy times seven’. Matthew 18:22 “If we really want to love we must learn how to forgive”. Mother Teresa. At the beginning of the year we received a fantastic array of new sporting equipment thanks to last year’s program. Again, every $10 spent at Coles Supermarkets up until October 18th will earn a Coles Sports for Schools voucher worth 1 point. If you’re shopping at Coles and want to help, be sure to ask for your vouchers and drop them into the collection box located in the Junior School front office (or put them in your child’s diary for collection in the classroom). Check with family, friends and neighbours who shop at Coles - the more we collect, the more equipment we will be able to redeem. Mass is celebrated in the College Chapel at the Senior School at 8.00am on Wednesday and Friday during term time. The Mass is for anyone who wishes to attend.
