TEACHING & LEARNING
JUNIOR SCHOOL
Tuesday 13th September 2011
Information Paper #2:
Further information about the curriculum document
Made in the Image of God
Last week I wrote to introduce you to the Made in the Image
of God curriculum.
Made in the Image of God is the personal development
curriculum developed by Catholic Education SA and
mandated by Archbishop Philip Wilson for use in SA Catholic
schools.
Catholics believe that God creates freely out of love. Humans
are created out of love and are called to love. Humans are
intrinsically good because they are of God.
God saw everything that he had made and indeed it was very
good. [Genesis 1:31]
I concluded last week by mentioning that this curriculum is
divided into three band level standards.
• R-2
• 3-4
• 5-6
Within each band level are the four strands of content.
Staff at the Junior School are currently investigating links
between the three stands of ‘Being Human’, ‘Being Connected’
and ‘Being Moral’ with existing Health, Child Protection
and Social Education curricula within the school. This will
ensure that our various health, development and protection
programs are in line with each other.
On the Monday student-free day, staff attended a workshop
about the ‘Being Sexual’ strand, facilitated by Catholic
Education Office consultant, Ms Marianne Hughes. This
strand will replace the Human Growth component of the
Junior School Personal Development Curriculum which has
been in place for many years. Staff were re-introduced to the
curriculum and then spent the afternoon devising learning
units, which are both psychologically and developmentally
appropriate for each year level.
An overview team, consisting of both parents and staff, is
being formed to look at the program before its proposed
implementation in Term Four.
More next week.
