• Work towards lett<strong>in</strong>g the employees' choose representatives <strong>in</strong> democratic elections at<br />
suppliers <strong>and</strong> subcontractors.<br />
• Make sure that the employees receives education on the labour legislation <strong>in</strong> force, the ILO<br />
conventions <strong>and</strong> the companies' codes of conduct. This education shall be performed together<br />
with trade union organisations <strong>and</strong> credible local organisations with knowledge <strong>in</strong> questions<br />
regard<strong>in</strong>g trade unions <strong>and</strong> labour legislation.<br />
• Supply safe <strong>and</strong> easily accessible systems, which make it practically possible for employees<br />
to report violations of laws <strong>and</strong> codes of conduct.<br />
• Conduct workplace <strong>in</strong>spections <strong>in</strong> conjunction with workers, trade unions, <strong>and</strong> credible local<br />
organisations, <strong>and</strong> ensure hat such <strong>in</strong>spections address all forms of abuse, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sidious<br />
abuses such as prevention of trade union activities, excessive work<strong>in</strong>g hours, forced overtime<br />
<strong>and</strong> non-payment of overtime work , poverty wages, unfair piece-rate targets, lack of wage<br />
security especially dur<strong>in</strong>g low seasons, exploitative terms of employment for migrant <strong>and</strong><br />
temporary workers, <strong>and</strong> non-payment of health <strong>and</strong> maternity benefits.<br />
• Ensure that workers have access to <strong>in</strong>formation on what actions have been taken to improve<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g conditions <strong>in</strong> their workplace as a result of an <strong>in</strong>spection or social audit; enable them<br />
to report whether these corrective actions have been taken.<br />
<strong>4.</strong> Work together to address problems <strong>in</strong> the toy <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
The companies with<strong>in</strong> the sector should take the follow<strong>in</strong>g steps:<br />
• Jo<strong>in</strong> with trade unions <strong>and</strong> other concerned organisations <strong>in</strong> assess<strong>in</strong>g the impacts of the<br />
practices of sport wear <strong>in</strong>dustry on labour st<strong>and</strong>ards; identify<strong>in</strong>g those bus<strong>in</strong>ess strategies <strong>and</strong><br />
operations which are caus<strong>in</strong>g violations of workers’ rights; <strong>and</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g action to address them,<br />
giv<strong>in</strong>g particular attention to the need to match ethical commitments with actual purchas<strong>in</strong>g<br />
practices.<br />
• Jo<strong>in</strong> together with trade unions <strong>and</strong> other concerned organisations <strong>in</strong> order to promote the<br />
workers' right to form <strong>and</strong> jo<strong>in</strong> trade unions, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiate a dialogue between the companies <strong>in</strong><br />
the field with the <strong>in</strong>tention of creat<strong>in</strong>g a framework agreement with a relevant global union<br />
federation.<br />
5. Inform the public about the work<strong>in</strong>g conditions <strong>in</strong> which their products are made,<br />
<strong>and</strong> provide transparent <strong>in</strong>formation about how their bus<strong>in</strong>ess operations affect<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g conditions <strong>in</strong> their supply-cha<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
The companies should take the follow<strong>in</strong>g measures:<br />
• Make public the <strong>in</strong>formation obta<strong>in</strong>ed about labour practices <strong>in</strong> their supply-cha<strong>in</strong>s,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation gathered from <strong>in</strong>spections <strong>and</strong> social audits.<br />
• Report cases where actions taken to improve work<strong>in</strong>g conditions have been agreed with<br />
suppliers, <strong>and</strong> report whether these corrective actions were taken.<br />
