Happy 30th Anniversary to the Dinos
1988 was a very big year. To name but a few
significant things which happened:
• The slogan “Just Do It” was born.
• Eddie The Eagle won over hearts and
minds all over the world with his antics at
the Winter Olympics in Calgary.
• Die Hard was released.
• Kylie Minogue released her song “I should
be so lucky”.
And we at the Club were ever so lucky
because, in 1988, the Dinos were formed.
Of course, marking 30 years of the most die
hard hockey fans and tightknit group of friends
is one thing – it is a truly momentous occasion
after all. But for me, it is not just the on-pitch
hours which set the Dinos apart from the rest
of us mere mortals. It is the number of Dinos
who feature on the board of Ladies’ Captains; it
is seeing multiple Dinos donning their luminous
yellow shirts and whistles to officiate matches
week in, week out; it is the contributions they
have made and continue to make to the wider
hockey community in Hong Kong; it is the
Dinos always seen in the
stands cheering on their Club
mates; it is the fact that they
have the toughest selection
process of any team in the
Hong Kong league structure…
and of course, it is the
number of hours (and millions
of dollars) spent in the bar
after all the on-pitch battles in
those 30 years.
The Dinos do not understand
the “not my problem” attitude,
by which so many HK folks are afflicted and
instead they will always just do it themselves.
The Dinos represent everything that I love about
our fantastic Club, and we could all stand to
learn a lot from your relentless team spirit,
support for Hong Kong Football Club’s Hockey
Section and lifelong friendships forged from this
sport which brings us all together.
Dinos – you won over the hearts and minds of
the Hong Kong Football Club 30 years ago,
and I know that will remain the same for the
next 30 years. I was truly sorry to be unable to
toast your 30th Anniversary at your weekend
of celebrations at the end of April, but I hope to
toast it with you all at the End of Season Party.
I do know that you will celebrate in style – after
all, you have 30 years of practice!
Pip Pip, dear Dinos.
