The Thoughts of the Chairman
Dear Members,
John J Shanahan,
Chairman
The Second Floor re-opened just in time for
Rugby Week and our “soft opening” of the new
food and beverage facilities turned out to be the
busiest week of the year! Well done to all the Staff for
coping admirably in new working conditions and under
great pressure. As we deal with defect rectification
works and some issues with new equipment, we will
look to expand the menus at the Second Floor outlets.
Artwork and other detailing will also begin to be put in
place and we will then “live with” the new facilities for
a while and see what changes will be needed as time
goes on.
Even though April was a busy sporting month,
especially for rugby, we will also have a busy May. The
Yau Yee League Cup Finals will be held on the Main
Pitch on the 5th May, with our very own Colts in the
Cup Final. On the 6th May, we host the Hong Kong
Lawn Bowls Association Men’s National Pairs
Semi-Finals. And, we have the HKFC Junior Soccer
Sevens Tournament the weekend of the 12th and
13th May. On the 18th – 20th May, we have our 19th
annual international soccer tournament, the HKFC
Citi Soccer Sevens, with 16 teams from around
the world in the competition. These include such
illustrious teams as Leicester City, Aston Villa, Brighton
and Hove Albion, Newcastle United and West Ham
United from the English Premier League, as well as
Australian A-League side Wellington Phoenix and
Newcastle Jets, Japanese J-League team Kashima
Antlers and Scottish Premier League side Glasgow
Rangers, along with Serie-A side Cagliari. The Club
will also be entering two teams and the Hong Kong
Football Association will be represented by the HKFA
Red Dragons and, as usual, we welcome back Hong
Kong Premier League champions, Kitchee. Plenty of
soccer action for you to enjoy this month, so why not
come down to the Club and cheer the teams on.
And, to close out the month we host the Hong
Kong V Malaysia match in the Asian Rugby
Championship on Saturday 26th May.
In closing, I will note, as mentioned below, the
passing of ex-Club Chairman and Soccer Section
member, Keith Marshall, who was Chairman of the
Club from 1985-1988. Our condolences to his family
and friends.
