Tom Park, Executive Director
I left off the May issue describing
the inside of a sanatorium that I was
housed in, in Ukraine ...
It was with a sense of adventure
that I surveyed the cold war era
accommodations. At the time, I
remember thinking to myself,
“this is awesome!” When would I
ever get to experience something
like this again?! It just seemed the
more “deferred maintenance” I
saw, my surroundings just showed
that much more character.
Thankfully, there were no rodents
to be found, at least none which
we could see. Again, thankfully I
was a deep sleeper, as it was
reported that many were kept up
by the ceaseless patter and
squeaking of small rodentia!
My trip to Ukraine culminated
in front of the 250 or so group of
youth and young professionals. I
was standing up on a stage along
with my translator as I began to
survey the faces that were a
mixture of intensity and
puzzlement with the speaker
standing before them who was
clearly Asian, but speaking English
June 2012
and having it translated to them
in their own tongue. The words
that I offered have long faded into
a distant kaleidescope of warm
images that ring with hope,
determination and trust. My brief
time in Ukraine and its vibrant
and brilliant young people has
impacted me to the point where I
still follow events in the country
and root for its people half a
world away.
As I ended my story in Josephine’s
Kitchen, I was again able to marvel
at the treasure of experience that had
gathered and was thankful I could
contribute a nugget on this particular
day.
Thank You, Steph!!!
It is with a full sense of
gratitude that I announce as of
June, Stephanie Sanchez, our
Director of Resident Care Services,
will transfer to our Belmont
Village community in Cardiff by
the Sea. We will miss her dearly,
as she moves on to the next stage
in her career. She will be an asset
to the community there and on
behalf of the staff and residents,
we want to say thank you and
wish Stephanie all the best!

Meeting
Friday, June 22
at 10:30 a.m.
in the Town Hall
It’s summer and it’s time to
enjoy the beautiful weather. Circle
of Friends and the Neighborhood has
a new workshop. The poetry workshop
is created to help us imagine and
express our thoughts on paper. Here’s
a few poems from our workshop.
Summer
On a sunny, hot, windy day
chirping birds come my way
Comfortable, beautiful, smashing
When water comes down and
crashing
Relaxing, misty air
When people come they will stare
Sweet, pine, wet
People will never forget
-Circle of Friends
Extraordinary
The sun is a vibrant, radiant
yellow ray of light
That shines through the world
In everyone’s sight
It is so amazing because of it bright
beauty
Just one little star
It’s Dad’s Dad’s Day!
We appreciate all the terrific
dads in our community.
Happy Father’s Day!
That shine all morning and
evening
But not through the night
No one can see it clearly cause it’s
high, high
Height
However, it’s still extraordinary I
must say
And it gives me might, might, might
-Circle of Friends
Fun
the grass so green,
the sun so bright,
life seems a dream,
no worries in sight
tans and tank tops,
laughter and bliss,
each moment passes,
without even a miss
friends and cookouts,
memories and laughs,
good times to remember,
but how long will it last
Growing older with good
vision
Good vision is a vital part of
feeling your best. We rely on sight
more than any other sense to
enjoy life to the fullest. Your
vision changes naturally
throughout your life. For example,
you may know that with age:
• Your eyes need more light
to see
• It becomes harder to tell the
difference between some
colors, particularly shades of
blue and green
• It becomes more difficult to
focus on things that are near
• Adjusting to glare and
darkness can become more
troublesome.
Nearly everyone experiences
these and other changes in their
vision as they grow older. The
good news is you can continue to
lead an active and independent
life even with these changes.
One very important thing you
can do is getting your eyes
checked regularly by an eye
doctor—at least once every other
year—especially if you are 55 or
older. Some people, especially
those with diabetes, may need to
go more often.
You should visit your eye
doctor even if you have no
problems seeing. There are several
eye diseases that have no
symptoms during their early
stages and only your eye doctor
can tell if you have them.
Small changes in the way you
live will help you to see better as
you age. These simple changes
include:
• Wearing sunglasses and a
brimmed hat if you are
sensitive to bright light and
anytime you are outdoors in
bright sunshine,
• Improving lighting around
your house,
• Wearing safety eyewear when
working around your house
or playing sports.
Another way to grow older with
good vision is to learn about
vision changes that occur as you
age. By being well informed, you
can learn what problems may
develop with your vision, how
those problems can be detected,
and what steps you can take to
save your sight. When you go in
for an eye examination, talk to
your doctor about your eyes and
your vision.
