News From DRCS:
The Importance of Hydration
in Seniors
A loss of hydration is one of the
major factors that impacts how
seniors look and feel. As we age,
our total body water decreases
along with thirst sensation. Fluid
loss is serious, affecting the heart,
kidneys and brain, and can even
be life threatening.
Dehydration can make seniors
weak and dizzy, which increases
their chances of falling. Health
Canada estimates that 20 percent
of injury-related deaths among
seniors can be traced back to a
fall. Though it may seem like
merely a summertime
phenomenon, dehydration can
strike us during all seasons.
In fact, dehydration is
accelerated during the cold
weather and at higher altitudes
because the air we breathe is drier
Chris (left) sits with Bill in
the Neighborhood. Chris
is one of our finest and
residents love him!
under these conditions. When we
breathe, our bodies humidify the
dry outside air and heat it up to
our body’s temperature, which is
why our wintry exhalations look
like fog.
The good news is that keeping
hydrated is easy. Here are some
simple ways to prevent
dehydration: Do not judge need
for water by thirst, Drink water
whether you are thirsty or not, Be
aware of certain foods and
beverages that promote water loss,
Increase your water intake by
consuming foods like oranges,
watermelon, and leafy green
vegetables. Keep hydrated when
you are on the go.
The Mayo Clinic acknowledges
that most doctors recommend
drinking eight to nine cups of
water a day, but said that people
need to drink as much water as is
necessary to replace water that is
lost throughout the day.
Employee of the Month October:
Chris V.
Belmont Sabre Springs honors Chris V.,
Neighborhood PAL, as Employee of the Month.
Born in Whittier, California, during his
childhood days camping with family was the
most fun. Nowadays he loves fishing,
motorcycling, and the outdoors.
This is Chris’s first job working in the
healthcare field; he plans to eventually become
an RN. His favorite thing about working here is
seeing the faces of thankful residents.
Thanks for the
Memories
Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the
birthplace of this month’s
“Thanks For The Memories.” John
Koshear was the youngest of three
children. At age three, the
Koshears moved to Long Beach,
California. The oil boom hit
Southern California and there was
plenty of work for carpenters
building oil derricks. In 1933, an
earthquake damaged John’s
house, so the family moved to
Hollywood where his father built
movie sets for the movie industry.
John graduated from Fairfax
High School in 1937. He attended
UCLA for two years and then UC
Berkeley and earned a degree in
Mechanical Engineering. While at
Berkeley, John joined the Navy
and was commissioned in 1941.
After attending training in the
Navy, he spent the entire war in
Maui. He was in charge of a
couple hundred men whose job
was to repair planes when their
aircraft carriers were in port. John
retired as a Lt. Commander in the
Naval Reserves.
John met his wife Babette in
Los Angeles and married her in
1948. They have two daughters, a
son and two grandchildren. His
career was very illustrious. In his
33 years as an aeronautical
engineer, he worked on the
Navajo Missile, the Titan Missile,
the Apollo Program, and finally
the F-14 Tomcat before retiring
at 67.
John was a serious body surfer,
loved walking, and for 23 years
belonged to the Sierra Club hiking
club. They also enjoyed traveling
and went on several cruises to
Europe and Hawaii.
John came to Belmont in July
2005. He is an avid Bridge player,
loves listening to music, and
reading. John, “Thanks For The
Memories.”
Our New Chef Manager:
Le Roy Patten
Le Roy Patten was born right
here in San Diego, California.
During those childhood days, his
favorite thing to do with family
was camping in the Laguna
Mountains. After growing up, Le
Roy decided to explore a
long-term career as a Chef. He
worked his way through school at
Grossmont College learning
business management. He has
enhanced his career through great
experience and many seminars to
Veterans’ Ceremony
become a better chef.
He has been in the restaurant
business since 1979 and is thrilled
about satisfying people’s taste
buds. Working at Claim Jumper,
Le Roy quickly made his way up
to senior management. Lucky for
Belmont, four and a half years
ago, he opened Belmont Cardiff as
the Chef Manager.
Le Roy and his wife Debbie
have two sons. He enjoys detailing
motorcycles and cars. As well, he
owns two Harley Davidson bikes,
which you might see him ride to
work. Not only has he traveled all
over the world but he has been to
47 of the 50 United States.
What he loves most about
Belmont is that, “Every day is a
history lesson.” Thanks for joining
our team to make Josephine’s
Kitchen a pleasurable place to eat.
We look forward to our 3 “Locally
Designated Meals” each month to
experience his cuisine.
Circle of
Friends News
When describing the Circle of
Friends program, the word
“therapeutic” is generally used in
conjunction with the phrase
“activity program.” Is this just
something we threw in because it
sounds good? Well, yes, but only
because it’s true! The program was
created with therapeutic benefits
in mind, using research based
methodology.
We assess each resident in the
program every three months using
a tool called the Dementia Older
Adults Rating Scale (DOARS). The
DOARS shows us the degree of
dementia each resident is
experiencing, and gives us insight
as to which parts of the brain are
most affected. We have seen that
the disease process is slower to
progress in residents participating
in the program, and for many
Circle of Friends residents, their
cognitive function actually
improves!
Neighborhood News
The holiday season is quickly
approaching, which means lots of
new visitors to the building. We
expect to see extended family,
out-of-towners,
great-grandchildren, and a
plethora of folks coming to
entertain. While this is wonderful
for our residents, this also means
a host of new germs coming in as
well. Please be diligent about
washing your hands frequently,
and encouraging your guests to do
the same.
Also, as much as you want to
visit with your loved ones, we ask
that you refrain from coming into
the building if you are sick, as
many of our elderly residents are
frail and have compromised
immune systems. What might be a
sniffle for you could quickly turn
into a serious bout of pneumonia
for one of our dear residents.
Thank you so much for
understanding and have a
wonderful Thanksgiving!
