The Importance of Hydration
in Seniors
A loss of hydration is one of the
major factors that impacts how
seniors look and feel. As we age,
our total body water decreases
along with thirst sensation. Fluid
loss is serious, affecting the heart,
kidneys and brain, and can even
be life threatening.
Dehydration can make seniors
weak and dizzy, which increases
their chances of falling. Health
Canada estimates that 20 percent
of injury-related deaths among
seniors can be traced back to a
fall. Though it may seem like
merely a summertime
phenomenon, dehydration can
strike us during all seasons.
In fact, dehydration is
accelerated during the cold
weather and at higher altitudes
because the air we breathe is drier
Chris (left) sits with Bill in
the Neighborhood. Chris
is one of our finest and
residents love him!
under these conditions. When we
breathe, our bodies humidify the
dry outside air and heat it up to
our body’s temperature, which is
why our wintry exhalations look
like fog.
The good news is that keeping
hydrated is easy. Here are some
simple ways to prevent
dehydration: Do not judge need
for water by thirst, Drink water
whether you are thirsty or not, Be
aware of certain foods and
beverages that promote water loss,
Increase your water intake by
consuming foods like oranges,
watermelon, and leafy green
vegetables. Keep hydrated when
you are on the go.
The Mayo Clinic acknowledges
that most doctors recommend
drinking eight to nine cups of
water a day, but said that people
need to drink as much water as is
necessary to replace water that is
lost throughout the day.
Employee of the Month October:
Chris V.
Belmont Sabre Springs honors Chris V.,
Neighborhood PAL, as Employee of the Month.
Born in Whittier, California, during his
childhood days camping with family was the
most fun. Nowadays he loves fishing,
motorcycling, and the outdoors.
This is Chris’s first job working in the
healthcare field; he plans to eventually become
an RN. His favorite thing about working here is
seeing the faces of thankful residents.
