Thursday May 5 2022 5 ‘I blacked out a metre before the line’ • From page 1 While Sayers will now take a well-deserved break, from competition at least, Sykes has her sights set on the track cycling junior world championships in Tel Aviv, Israel, in August. A year 13 student at Avonside Girls’ High School, Sykes, 17, defended her under-19 time trial title in Hokitika and also claimed the road race. Those victories followed on from five gold medals on the boards in Cambridge in mid-March. Sykes was dominant in the time trial, completing the 15km endurance test more than a minute clear of her closest challenger. The road race was a tighter affair, with Sykes edging Seana Gray (Te Awamutu Sports) in a sprint finish at the climax of a 97.5km circuit around Lake Mahinapua. “I was holding on for dear life. I don’t know where I found that sprint, but I did,” Sykes admitted. “I blacked out a metre before the line, I threw everything at it, I didn’t even know where the line was.” She was now looking forward to preparing for Israel after Covid-19 prevented New Zealand sending a squad to last year’s junior world champs in Egypt. “I’m so stoked to be selected for that. I think we’ll have a really good opportunity to get in there and hopefully have a good TP (team pursuit),” she said. Sayers also cruised to the top of her time trial podium, timed 29min 36.95sec, well clear of Southland’s Poppy McIvor (30min 17.92sec). Sayers, who is also a keen mountain biker in Bottle Lake Forest Park, made light of blustery conditions that impacted on the race against the clock. “I actually quite like those conditions, it didn’t freak me out too EASY RIDER: Talented junior cyclist Shaylah Sayers continued her stunning domination of the under-15 class nationally with time trial and road race triumphs on the West Coast. PHOTO: CANTERBURY TRACK CYCLING much,” she said. Sayers, McIvor and Canterbury’s Jesse Thomson had to be separated by a photo finish after all recording 1hr 3min 25sec in the road race. “That was really close. It was really good, there were quite a few attacks. Everyone was really on form,” Sayers said. “The sprint from the corner was longer than I thought it was, I just had to keep going.” Possible closure of New Brighton Rd riles up Zervos • By Emily Moorhouse NEW BRIGHTON Rd’s future remains unclear, but a community board member is making a bid to stop any decision to close parts of it. Coastal-Burwood Community Board member Jo Zervos said a regeneration plan suggests changes to routes on New Brighton Rd, but the plan has been signed off and a decision is yet to be made on what these changes will be. Zervos said while nothing is confirmed, there is a possibility certain sections of the road, such as Cresswell Ave to Bassett St, Bassett St to Anzac Dr, Anzac Dr to Wainoni Rd and Bower Ave to Hawke St, may be closed. “I don’t know what’s going to happen or when it’s going to happen,” Zervos said. The board requested pricing to repair and future-proof these four sections of New Brighton Rd in 2020, but because there was no funding allocated to carry out pricing this has not been done. Zervos, who has failed to get answers on the road’s future, asked for residents’ thoughts via the New Brighton Facebook Jo Zervos •HAVE YOUR SAY: Share your views on New Brighton Rd’s future. A majority of the comments were strongly opposed to closing sections of the road. City council head of transport and waste management Lynette Ellis said no decisions have been made on closing New Brighton Rd. “The New Brighton Rd connection at the Pages Rd bridge is being considered as part of the bridge renewal scheme development and will [be] consulted on once investigations have developed sufficiently,” Ellis said. Zervos said it would be a shame if parts of the road were closed, as it brings people to the area. “I’ve used it my whole life, it’s really direct,” Zervos said. “For New Brighton’s future, I think it’s really essential to actually keep the road open.” FLY IN FOR MAY DEAL$ $13.99 EACH $19.99 EACH $22.99 EACH $22.99 EACH $24.99 EACH $24.99 EACH $25.99 EACH $29.99 EACH $33.99 EACH $24.99 EACH $24.99 EACH Jim Beam; CC 440ml 4.8% (inc zero); 355ml 7% all 4pk cans Southern Comfort 375ml 10pk cans Jack Daniel’s 6pk 330ml bottles Jack Daniel’s 8pk 330ml cans Jack Daniel’s & Cola Double Jack 250ml 10pk cans $9.99 EACH Cody’s (incl zero) 7% 250ml 12pk cans $12.99 EACH Cruiser 7% 12pk can range $17.99 EACH ODD Company 10pk can range $21.99 EACH JB Gold; CC Premium 250ml 7% 12pk cans $21.99 EACH Smirnoff Ice Double Black (ex guarana) 7% 250ml 12pk can range $35.99 EACH JB; Canadian Club Effen 330ml 4.8% 10pk bottle ranges $35.99 EACH Tui Vodka Soda (ex bourbon) 7% 250ml 18pk cans $35.99 EACH Woodstock 7% 250ml cans 5% 330ml bottles all 18pks $37.99 EACH $36.99 EACH $39.99 EACH Jim Beam Canadian Club (incl Zero) 18pk 330ml cans $37.99 EACH Long White 15pk bottle range $39.99 EACH Jacobs Creek (ex Sparkling range) Montana Classic ranges $41.99 EACH $42.99 EACH Wolf Blass Yellow Label range (ex PN) $52.99 EACH Grant Burge Ink range $54.99 EACH Pepperjack range $57.99 EACH Devils Staircase Pinot Noir Rua Pinot Noir $62.99 EACH Seagers (incl lime) Ivanov 1L 3 FOR $12.00 Larios Original 1L JB Honey; Devils Cut; Black 700ml Midori 700ml $19.99 EACH 42 Below Pure (ex flavs)700ml $23.99 EACH Jameson Jameson Cold Brew Absolut; Beefeater flvrd ranges all 700ml $23.99 EACH Malibu Kahlua (incl salted caramel) 1Ltrs Finlandia 1L Jack Daniel’s 700ml Coruba (incl Gold) 1Lt Jim Beam Canadian Club (incl spiced) 1Ltrs Bombay Sapphire 1L Bombay Bramble 700ml Mt Gay Eclipse Jagermeister 1Ltrs The Naked Malt 700ml The Glenlivet Founders Reserve Caribbean Reserve 700mls Maker’s Mark 1Lt Kingfisher Strong 7.2% 500ml cans Tiger; Tiger Crystal; Crystal Ultra Low Carb 12pk bottles Haagen 15pk bottles Kingfisher Sol 12pk bottles $23.99 EACH $24.99 EACH $25.99 EACH $26.99 EACH $26.99 EACH $29.99 EACH $36.99 EACH $39.99 EACH $41.99 EACH Orchard Thieves 12pk range Asahi 12pk bottles Lion Red; Waikato; Speights Summit 15pk bottles Monteith’s (classic & batch brewed ex cider) 12pk range Steinlager 15pk bottles Heineken 15pk bottles Tui; Export Gold; Extra Low Carb; DB Draught 24pk bottles Carlsberg 24pk bottles Export 33 24pk bottles THIRSTY LIQUOR LINWOOD 21 ALDWINS ROAD, LINWOOD 03 982 1753 THIRSTY LIQUOR BURWOOD 9 PARNWELL ST, BURWOOD 03 383 2564 Promotion period between 1/5/2022 to 31/5/2022.
