Racers set blistering
pace on two wheels

THEY MIGHT not stand out
riding to and from school on
the roads of New Brighton or
Avondale, but Amelia Sykes and
Shaylah Sayers are already on the
fast track to successful cycling
careers.
After dominating their respective
categories at the track national
championships inside Cycling
New Zealand’s flagship velodrome
in Cambridge, the talented teenagers
made a smooth transition to
the age group road race national
championships in Hokitika.
Sayers, who lives in Avondale,
capped an unbeaten debut season
as a competitive cyclist by securing
the under-15 time trial and road
race on the West Coast over Anzac
weekend, to boost her national
title haul to eight.
The 13-year-old only joined
the Canterbury Track Cycling
development programme last
November, so her progress has
been remarkable.
“I was talking to one of my
coaching colleagues and we were
trying to think: ‘Has an under-15
bike rider ever dominated and
won everything in the under-15
women’s grade?’ And for the life
of us we couldn’t think of anyone
in the past 20 years,” said Sayers’
coach Terry Gyde.

AFTER SIX years of labour,
perseverance and patience, The
Bridge hub has finally opened its
doors to the public.
Saturday marked the official
opening of the community facility
in South New Brighton, an event
the trust chairwoman said was
“surreal.”
The hub, at Bridge St, is owned
and operated by The Bridge South
Brighton Trust which is made up
entirely of volunteers.
“It was just wonderful to have an
opportunity to thank so many of
the volunteers, supporters, funders
and the community and officially
open,” TBSBT chairwoman Lisa
Tregenza said.
“It’s been quite a journey over
quite a few years.”
Because the hub was yet to have
their code of compliance
signed off by the city
council, the opening was
an invite-only event, with
guests who had contributed
directly to the hub
such as funders, volunteers
and tradespeople.
The opening started with
a dawn blessing which
involved uncovering a
carving at the entrance of the hub
followed by another blessing to
welcome the guests onto the land.

Williams, who contributed to the
funding of the hub cut the ribbon
and gave a speech as well as Mayor
Lisa
Tregenza
Lianne Dalziel and Tregenza.
Guests were then invited to view
the different spaces such as the
cafe, gallery, courtyard,
hall that fits 150 people
and wellness rooms. There
was also a planting of a
pōhutukawa in the courtyard.
The project was first
started in 2016, from
an abandoned and earthquake-damaged
church and
has
gone through various stages to
become fully functional, costing in
the vicinity of 1.5 million Tregenza
said.
“It feels a little bit surreal because
there has been so much planning
and so much discussion around
detail and in terms of getting it
built,” Tregenza said.
“It’s very much seeing our vision
come to life with a huge amount of
volunteer hours.”
The trust is currently organising
a public opening and hoping to
host this as soon as possible.
Tregenza said they have already
had people indicate interest in using
the facility and have their first
wellness expo booked for May 22,
with 25 practitioners for the public
to have access to.
Tregenza said it’s the people that
had the vision, created the funding,
built it and it’s the people that
are now coming into the space to
bring it to life.
“As much as it’s a building, it’s
about the people.”

‘I blacked out a metre before the line’

competition at least, Sykes has
her sights set on the track cycling
junior world championships in
Tel Aviv, Israel, in August.
A year 13 student at Avonside
Girls’ High School, Sykes, 17,
defended her under-19 time trial
title in Hokitika and also claimed
the road race. Those victories followed
on from five gold medals
on the boards in Cambridge in
mid-March.
Sykes was dominant in the
time trial, completing the 15km
endurance test more than a
minute clear of her closest
challenger.
The road race was a tighter
affair, with Sykes edging Seana
Gray (Te Awamutu Sports) in
a sprint finish at the climax of
a 97.5km circuit around Lake
Mahinapua.
“I was holding on for dear life.
I don’t know where I found that
sprint, but I did,” Sykes admitted.
“I blacked out a metre before
the line, I threw everything at it,
I didn’t even know where the line
was.”
She was now looking forward
to preparing for Israel after
Covid-19 prevented New Zealand
sending a squad to last year’s
junior world champs in Egypt.
“I’m so stoked to be selected
for that. I think we’ll have a really
good opportunity to get in there
and hopefully have a good TP
(team pursuit),” she said.
Sayers also cruised to the
top of her time trial podium,
timed 29min 36.95sec, well clear
of Southland’s Poppy McIvor
(30min 17.92sec).
Sayers, who is also a keen
mountain biker in Bottle Lake
Forest Park, made light of
blustery conditions that
impacted on the race against the
clock.

“That was really close. It was
really good, there were quite a few
attacks. Everyone was really on
form,” Sayers said.

future remains unclear, but a
community board member is
making a bid to stop any decision
to close parts of it.
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board member Jo Zervos said
a regeneration plan suggests
changes to routes on New
Brighton Rd, but the plan has
been signed off and a decision is
yet to be made on what
these changes will be.
Zervos said while
nothing is confirmed,
there is a possibility
certain sections of the
road, such as Cresswell
Ave to Bassett St, Bassett
St to Anzac Dr,
Anzac Dr to Wainoni
Rd and Bower Ave to
Hawke St, may be closed.
“I don’t know what’s going to
happen or when it’s going to happen,”
Zervos said.
The board requested pricing
to repair and future-proof these
four sections of New Brighton Rd
in 2020, but because there was
no funding allocated to carry out
pricing this has not been done.

Big rigs, cranes and tanks – all moving

THEY HAVE all the bells and
whistles and when viewed from a
low angle, they really do look the
part – right down to the lugs and
chains and their sound effects,
and yet they are only 1/14th the
size of the real thing.
But that doesn’t stop scores
of keen radio-controlled model
trucking enthusiasts from turning
out on the fourth Sunday of each
month to drive their pride and joy
on the RC Haulers club site with
their multi-use scale roads in the
red zone on the corner of New
Brighton Rd and Brooker Ave.
The club has installed on-site
200m of concrete roads, also built
to scale, complete with road signs
and garages to reverse into or
store spare trailers in.
RC Haulers club secretary
and co-founder Kris Heslin, of
Halswell, who doesn’t drive trucks
professionally, said the club has a
strong following both nationally
and internationally.
“The attraction is to be creative
and share a passion for trucks, I
can tinker around at home and
then come out and have a bit of
fun,” he said.
He said a radio controlled
model truck might cost over
$1000 to outfit.
“But 80 per cent of the fun was
in making it, and customising it
how you want it to look and then

sharing it with everyone,” he said.
On show were many semitrailer
trucks, light trucks, cranes,
a working dirt processor, diggers
and excavators.
All were intricately detailed
and created from model kit sets
or scratch built to replicate the
original long haulers and the
loads they carry.
There is even a M1 Abrams
tank and a police car.
While marveling at their
detail, the many spectators on
hand couldn’t help but notice
the sheer size of these model
trucks.
They are big; with some road
train outfits well over 1.5m long.
All motor around the scale
roads, crossing over a bridge or
driving through the tunnel to
deliver their loads into garages
or one of two scale quarry sites at
the venue, all while making the
appropriate noises on cue.
They start up, they idle, and
then move away, forward under
power or reverse complete with
hazard lights and beepers.

radio controlled racing cars and
off-road racers, these replica
trucks and excavators also move
at the correct scale speed – about
walking pace.
Members said they must plan
their journeys because they do
strain under the loads carrying
tanks, excavators, other trucks
and cars, or even scale houses on
their trailers.
Heslin said some of the loads
can weight up to 14kg.
“They do get loaded down and
you certainly feel the weight, especially
when they go up over the
bridge and don’t quite make it.
“Trying to make it more realistic
is all part of the fun,” he said.
Enthusiast John Sanders built
a copy of his own house to be
transported by his truck and trailer
unit, just because he wanted to
make something different.
Heslin said there was no age
limit, the club welcomes people
to go along and try their hand at
driving one of the trucks..

Growing in the right places
While we must follow the Government’s direction, we’re proposing that
some areas have qualities, known as Qualifying Matters. This means the
rules enabling increased development would not apply, or would be
limited, and development remains subject to resource consent approval.
This could be because of their significant heritage or character value, or
because of specific hazards like rockfall, erosion, tsunami or flooding.
Planning ahead is way smarter
We have the water and wastewater pipes in place for additional housing
in most parts of the city, but there are some areas where we may not
have the capacity to service more homes.
Ōtakaro Avon River
We propose adding a district-wide engineering provision to the
District Plan which will require anyone wanting to develop land to
check water and sewer network capacity with us prior to planning

Coastal hazards – preparing for change
We’re already feeling the impacts of climate change. We need to plan
now for the effects of coastal hazards on our communities, infrastructure
and environment, so that we are ready for what we will be facing in
the future.
We’re proposing changes, via our Draft Coastal Hazards Plan Change,
to avoid an increased risk of harm to people and property from coastal
hazards such as flooding, tsunami, and erosion.
Protecting our Residential Heritage Areas
We want to protect the special heritage in some of our residential areas.
Through a separate Draft Heritage Plan Change we’re proposing to create
11 Residential Heritage Areas, which have buildings and features that
are collectively of significance to Christchurch’s heritage and identity.
This means there will be less intensification enabled than in standard
residential areas.
The plan change also proposes adding around 65 buildings, items and
building interiors to the Schedule of Significant Historic Heritage.
Protecting our Character Areas
We’re also proposing changes to the 15 Character Areas in the city,
with these to become Qualifying Matters. Character Areas are residential
neighbourhoods that are distinctive from their wider surroundings,
and are considered to be worthy of retaining.
While some infill development will be allowed, the Council will have
more flexibility in declining a resource consent where the design of
a new house, or changes to an existing house aren’t in keeping with
the Character Area.
Protecting our trees
We know trees are important to people and they play a vital role in
helping tackle climate change.
We’re working on ways to ensure that new housing development does
not come at the expense of the city’s tree canopy. This includes seeking
Financial Contributions from anyone wishing to develop land and who
does not retain or plant 20 per cent tree canopy cover on a site. We’ll
use these contributions to plant more trees on Council owned land.
We propose further protecting trees by making the list of protected
trees in the current District Plan a Qualifying Matter.

Bug hotel a bid to

A BUG hotel shaped like
a whare has been installed
at Horseshoe Lake,
Burwood, to help boost the
population of native bees.
City council urban rangers
made and installed the
hotel in the lake’s regeneration
area of the Ōtakaro
Avon River Corridor in a
bid to establish more colonies
of native bees.
In turn, the bees pollinate
native plants, including
manuka, kanuka and
pohutukawa.
“We’re helping the native
bee population by building
a home so they can do
their job more easily. They
have to compete with the
honey bees so want to give
them a bit of a head start,”
city council community
partnerships ranger Courtney
Reid said.
The hotels are filled with
flax, pinecones, bamboo
and other natural products
which the bees can use to
establish their habitat.
Said Reid: “We’re supporting
from the bottom
up. So if we establish more
habitats for insects and
bees, that helps increase
the number of native
plants and trees in the
area, which then attracts
more native bird life.”
The area around Horseshoe
Lake was a food
resource site for Māori, so
the rangers thought it was
fitting to have the hotel
shaped like a whare.
“Staff handmade these
wonderful structures in
their spare time and also
made use of resources
that were already here in
the OARC, it’s all natural.
Even the paint is made
from ochre.”
The whare is the first in
a number of hotels being
installed.
There are at least another
six which will be placed
in different parts of the
OARC over the coming
months, including one
in Adventure Ave and
another at the intersection
of Linwood Ave and Avonside
Drive.
“It will take a while for
the bees to make their
home, so it won’t be until
after winter that we start
seeing them going in and
out of the whare and other
hotels,” Reid said.
“We want to bring a
public awareness to native
bees and plants in this
area, but we also just want
to encourage people to
get out and explore the
OARC.”
Growing shrooms at fungi
farm ‘complicated but fun’
AN INITIATIVE to grow
mushrooms at the fungi
farm in the Avon River
Corridor regeneration
area has been labelled
“complicated but fun”.
The project is being led
by the Riverlution Collective
and Richmond Community
Garden. Spokeswoman
Hayley Guglietta
said it will take a couple of
years to fully establish the
fungi populations in the
area.
“They’ve got to have the
right amount of sunshine,
water and heat – they need
moist, warm soil,” she said.
“It’s complicated but
fun.”
Autumn is the best time
to grow fungus and since
the farm opened last July it
has seen button and oyster
mushrooms pop up and
shaggy clumps of lion’s
mane sprout from trees.
“We’ve still got a lot
of inoculating to do and
there’s different methods of
getting the spores in, such
as in-ground mulching,
mushroom compost and
logs,” said Guglietta.
“They all have their
particular likes. The birch
bolete mushrooms enjoy
being near the birch trees
for instance.”

Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a

underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
