Kia Rite Hoea is the phrase
waka ama/canoe paddlers used,
meaning “Get ready . . . paddle.”.
For this workshop it has a
metaphorical meaning of helping
to get your recreation, arts,
programme or event idea, to
take off. Presenting 55 pages of
jam-packed guidance, checklists,
hot-tips and case studies, the
workshop will be run across two
sessions, this Thursday and next.
Cost is $35 community groups,

Te Ara Ātea
Music Creation Workshops –
Pre-production
Monday, 6.30-7.30pm
Ryan Chin, a local artist,
multi-instrumentalist, producer,
and session musician has teamed
up with Selwyn Libraries to
bring an informative music
creation series. Workshops will
cover the whole process of song
writing, producing, recording,
and mixing. Book into one or as
many as you like. Part 2 – Preproduction:
This phase will help
you figure out how to get a song
the way you want it to sound. It
will cover the different methods
of crafting a song sonically and
go over why it’s important to
make these decisions before
recording. Suitable for 13+ years.

20th Annual Selwyn
Art Exhibition 2022
Saturday May 21st &
Sunday May 22nd 10am-4pm
Rolleston Community Centre
On the 21st and 22nd of May this
year an exciting celebration of art will
be held at the Rolleston Community
Centre. The Selwyn Art Exhibition is
in its 20th year and is run by the Arts
Heart Selwyn Central Arts Council
with the aim to encourage the
enjoyment of visual arts. Local artists
find a friendly low commission place
to showcase their talent and allow
members of the public to buy an
original artwork at reasonable cost.
This year the exhibition is moving to a
larger space in the community center
due to the increasing number of
artists taking part in the event. It’s an
exciting time for both the organising
team and artists alike.
The committee are a group of
supporters and artists who get
together to run the event and
workshops for Selwyn people to
try art and other creative pursuits
themselves. Last year the new policy
of art works being able to be taken
home immediately once purchased
was a huge success, with artists then
being able to replace the work. A wide
range craft, paint, and photography
were on display.
Rob Lawrence is a local photographer
who has both exhibited and been
on the organising team commented
“I enjoyed working with the friendly
team and will continue to help out.
I urge you all, arty or not, to consider
getting involved. I am looking foward
to a positive future for the arts in
Central Selwyn.”
One more innovation is the new
GOLD
COIN
DONATION
Youth Award to be presented to an
artist 25 years of age or under. “We
really want to encourage artists of
any age or stage in their art career
to give it a go and share something
they have created with the public.
The exhibition is such a friendly and
supportive venue to try exhibiting
your art for the first time,” says
Margaret White another artist and
committee member who is also
a guiding light of the successful
support group, Selwyn Practicing
Artists.
Rob Lawrence is originally from USA
but has lived in the Darfield area for
over 38 years. Rob has been a birder
all his life and a natural progression to
photography in the 70’s followed. He
has become more serious in the last 10
years. Birds and Landscape are amongst
his favorite topics. Currently B&W rural
buildings and dabbling in portrait/
subject work are current projects.
