Army Reserve Force Private Shannon Harrison, of Shirley, was
one of 60 soldiers who took part in a training exercise on the
West Coast. The section signaler was involved in Exercise Kalami
in dense forest near Maruia. Their task was to follow a defined
path through the bush while under attack. But the decaying
undergrowth and limited visibility challenged them all as they
patrolled the area with their weapons and packs while the enemy
confronted them at every turn. PHOTOS: JOHN COSGROVE
CONCERNS FOR safety and
complaints about noise from
unauthorised motorbikes have
prompted 20 “no motorbikes”
signs to be put up around the
red zone.
Ashley Campbell regularly
walks her two little dogs around
the Avonside area and said some
people were using the area as
an off-road dirt track for their
motorbikes.
Campbell said the issue with
motorbikes has been ongoing, but
recently worsened with teenagers
and adults seen riding around
parks, tearing up the grass and
making excessive noise.
“It’s an accident waiting to
happen,” she said. “It’s becoming
more of a problem.”
Campbell reached out to the
city council’s red zone team to
see what could be done and was
pleased to hear signs will be
installed.
Red zone manager Dave Little
said riding motorbikes within
parks is prohibited under a bylaw.
“We have recently experienced
an uptick in this behaviour and so
are increasing signage to remind
people that this activity is not
permitted,” he said.
WE ALL seem to be behaving
ourselves this holidays.
That is the report card of the
Christchurch North Community
Patrol, with chairman Sam Hall
describing the summertime situation
as “pretty
good.”
Park and
picnic areas
have been on
the patrol radar,
standard for this
time of year.
“We haven’t
actua ly had to
report anything
from the picnic areas around,”
Hall said.
“It was a l very family-orientated,
so it’s been quite good.”
More family groups than usual
seemed to be out, possibly because
the Covid-19 pandemic was preventing
people from leaving town
for a holiday, he said.
Being a frequent presence
was also helpful in deterring
incidents.
December and January were
also the time of year the patrol
focused on monitoring schools,
but no issues had arisen there
either.
Another summertime staple
was fire danger patrol.
No decision
yet to
appeal
declining of
rehabilitation
facility
• By Fiona E lis
THE DEPARTMENT of
Corrections has until February 9
to appeal after permission to build
a contentious rehabilitation centre
for violent offenders in St Albans
was declined.
However, it is remaining tightlipped
on whether or not it is likely
to do so.
Last week the Bristol Street
Resource Consent Hearing panel
declined to grant resource consent
for the Bristol St facility, fo lowing
a hearing in November.
The proposal would have seen
up to 12 men serving sentences
of home detention at 14 Bristol St
while participating in a violenceprevention
programme. Men
with significant untreated mental
health issues would not be eligible
to participate in the programme.
In their decision, city council
appointed commissioners Anthony
Hughes-Johnson QC and Ken
Lawn said they were not satisfied
the site was appropriate for such a
facility.
Corrections acting regional
commissioner Chris O’Brien-
Smith did not answer Nor’West
New’s question on whether an
appeal would be made, but said
corrections would spend the
next few weeks reflecting on the
commissioners’ findings.
Styx trust celebrates 20 years
THE STYX Living Laboratory
Trust is marking its 20-year
anniversary this month.
The trust was set up in 2002
to achieve Vision 3 of the city
council document Styx Vision
2000-2040, which is to create a
living laboratory that focuses
on research and learning in the
Pūharakekenui/Styx catchment.
“The trustees, staff and
volunteers are advocates for
maintaining water quality and
other values including ecology,
drainage, culture, heritage,
landscape and recreation
in the awa,” said the trust’s
conservation projects manager
Bethany Baker.
“We are passionate about
the Pūharakekenui and want
it to remain clean, healthy and
biodiverse so that it is available
for future generations to use and
enjoy.”
The trust and the city
council have spent the last 20
years working on protecting
freshwater quality and restoring
ecological function and viability
of vulnerable waterways.
City council parks biodiversity
team leader Dr Antony Shadbolt
said: “So much incredible
work has been achieved over
the past two decades from
strong environmental advocacy
and long-term water quality
improvement to bird monitoring
and significant forest planting.”
LIVING LABORATORY: The Styx trust and the city council have spent the last 20 years
working on protecting freshwater quality and restoring ecological function and viability of
vulnerable waterways.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
The trust has recently received
$4.2 million from the Ministry
of Environment’s freshwater
improvement fund and jobs in
nature, which will go towards
planting more than two hectares
of forest and two hectares of
riparian planting, planned
for each year over the next
five years.
“We will also be working on
eradicating grey willow from the
upper catchment and putting
in stock-proof fencing along the
waterways,” Shadbolt said.
As part of the celebration, the
Christine Heremaia Field Centre
was opened earlier this month
to further research development
in the catchment and host
school visits and community
workshops.
The field centre has been 20
years in the making and will be
the base of the trust’s eight staff,
with three more joining the team
in July.
Motorbike
damage
unexpected
• From page 1
Motorbike riders face a maximum
penalty of $1600 for riding
in an unauthorised area.
Burwood resident Angela Todd
the damage caused by motorbike
users is disappointing and not
what you’d expect in the area.
“The times I have seen them,
they were speeding around without
any regard for anyone else,”
Todd said.
“On one occasion they sped
down Locksley Ave at what would
have been over 50km/hr.”
The new signs have been
installed around the red zone’s
green spine, from Richmond
through to Bexley Park, with one
in South New Brighton.
Campbell said while it was
“positive” the new signs were
installed, she doubts it will stop
all motorbike users from riding
around the parks.
‘You can change things for the better’
• By Emily Moorhouse
HELPING stranded whales and
preserving endangered plants
might seem pretty out there for
some, but for park ranger Dave
Rate-Smith this is just another
day in the office.
The 43-year-old is trained in
horticulture, construction and
fine arts, and said being a park
ranger lets him use all these skills.
“You could be answering
emails, then fixing a broken
waterline or making park furniture,”
he said. “I’m prone to
getting bored easily and being a
ranger I don’t get bored.”
Before Rate-Smith became a
ranger four years ago, he owned
a construction business, after
seeing the need for it following
the earthquakes.
After seven years he closed the
business and joined ecological
firm Wai-ora, working his way
up to team leader in two years
before jumping at the opportunity
to become a ranger for
Bottle Lake Forest Park.
Now Rate-Smith looks after
multiple parks including Styx
Mill, The Groynes, McLeans
Island and Roto Kohatu.
He said the job changes everyday
and you have to be prepared
to “throw your plans out the
window at any given second.”
Rate-Smith especially likes
Sundays because that’s when he
can talk to the public the most.
“It’s when you actually do that
DREAM JOB: Dave Rate-Smith has been a park ranger for four years and said he gets
excited about going to work.
PHOTOS: EMILY MOORHOUSE
you become aware of problems
you might have missed,” he
said. “I really like seeing their
reactions when we change and
improve an area.”
The responsibilities of a ranger
seem endless. The job requires
problem-solving skills, having
to be a trained firefighter, and
handling animals such as whales
and sea lions.
“We end up with a good range
of skills but not being specialists
in any of them, which suits me to
a tee,” Rate-Smith said.
Describing himself as an outdoors
person, Rate-Smith said
being out in nature is definitely
one of the highlights of the job.
“It’s what calms me as a person,
that’s my happy place in life,
hearing the fantails twittering
away,” he said. “That really sort
of puts a smile on my face.
NATURE: Rate-Smith said
being outdoors is one of
the highlights of being a
park ranger.
“There’s times I think I’d love
to go off and work for DOC in
the middle of nowhere but aside
from my wife not appreciating it,
I would actually miss the social
side of it.”
When asked what the strangest
“It’s not a day in parks
until you pick up a pair of
undies”
– Dave Rate-Smith
thing he’s come across at one of
the parks he laughed and said
“those would not be appropriate
for paper”.
“We see some shocking things
aye, we see the best and the worst
of human nature,” he said.
“People go to parks to do weird
things, they really do. It’s not a
day in parks until you pick up a
pair of undies.”
Ranger creates legacy
Teen bound for
maths Olympiad
CREATIVE: Rate-Smith built this seat in collaboration with a local carver and weaver for
one of the parks, and made a fairy house in his spare time for the children’s fairy forest in
Bottle Lake Forest Park.
• From page 5
When he was tasked with
replacing picnic tables at The
Groynes, Rate-Smith said he
“wasn’t impressed” with the
cost so took it upon himself to
design his own tables and get
an engineer to build and install
them. This roughly halved the
cost of ordering tables in.
It’s things like this that
make Rate-Smith get up in the
morning feeling excited to go
to work, something he feels
fortunate to experience.
While Rate-Smith loves his
job, he said there are some
aspects that he really struggles
with, particularly seeing people
damage the parks.
“We do all of this work and
there’s always an element to
society that seem to congregate
in parks that want to destroy
stuff,” he said.
“You put everything you can
into it and you do believe in what
you’re doing, and it might only
last a week before somebody’s
destroyed it.”
He said the rangers had seen
an increase in people doing
burn-outs at The Groynes,
ripping the paddocks to pieces,
and wondered if this was due to
frustrations with Covid.
This time of year tends to
be the quietest for the rangers
and they spend it planning and
planting as well as taking in new
volunteers to help out around
the parks.
Outside of work, Rate-Smith
enjoys pottering in his garage,
gardening and painting, and
is even learning how to tattoo,
using his legs as a drawing board
for his “doodles”.
One of his favourite parts of
the job is seeing changes such
as rare birds coming back to
an area or catching glimpses of
waterways improving through
the work the rangers do.
“We could well be leaving
something for people hundreds
of years from now,” he said.
“You can change things for
the better so easily; you get to do
something good everyday.”
• By Mick Jensen
BURNSIDE HIGH School
student Grady Kenix has been
selected as a member of the New
Zealand Mathematics Olympiad
team.
The 17-year-old is in his final
year at school and is one of just
six students selected, and the only
one outside of Auckland.
He will compete at the 63rd
International Mathematical Olympiad
in Norway in July, which
is expected to draw teams from
more than 100 countries.
Ironically, Grady elected to
drop maths after Year 11, but
has continued to have a strong
interest in the subject outside of
the formal classroom setting.
His interest in maths started at
primary school in Lyttelton, he
said.
“We had a really good teacher
called Jeremy and he was the one
who stirred up my interest and fascination
for the subject and started
the maths journey for me.’’
Grady’s quest to be part of
the New Zealand Mathematics
Olympiad team started over 10
months ago, alongside hundreds
of other hopefuls.
Over those months and after
many hours of tuition, training
camps and competitions, entry
numbers were steadily whittled
down to the final elite students.
Grady was given his selection
news recently and is modest
about his achievements.
“I’m happy to have been chosen
after a long selection process and
a lot of work, and I am looking
forward to testing my maths
skills against other students
from around the world,” he
said.
He receives $2000 towards the
costs of attending the olympiad
and will use earnings from his
waiter job at Lyttelton’s Nomnom
Kitchen to help fund the trip.
His travels will include a
stopover in his birth-land of
the USA, which he left at ninemonths-old
to come to New
Zealand.
Saving those
precious photos
A passion for properly preserving precious
family photos has been a business for Gail
Ruddle since 2004. She became a distributor
for Creative Memories in 2015, and based
in Christchurch she is one of only three
distributors in New Zealand. An avid
scrapbooker, Gail loves helping people to
preserve their photos and memories.
Founded in the United States in 1987,
Creative Memories is widely known for
leading the scrapbooking industry with
world-class products. Today’s Creative
Memories was re-launched in 2014
under new ownership, but with the same
exceptional quality and modern design.
So, where are your precious photos?
Answer: they are everywhere. In your
phone, on your tablet. You may have a
point-n-shoot camera or a DSLR. You can’t
escape the selfies, Instagram, Pinterest, and
Facebook. And today, people are taking more
photos than ever before. It’s been estimated
that in the past five years, more photos have
been taken than all the prior years combined.
Sadly, few of these photographs will survive
beyond a year. As Gail notes, the reason most
photographs being taken today will soon be
totally gone is that digital images are not seen
as important enough to be kept in printed
form.
Also, technology has changed so fast, that
many photographs taken six or seven years
ago are stored on media that is no longer
supported, such as floppy discs. In a few years,
DVDs will likely be obsolete as will USB drives.
So, to preserve those precious photos, they
need to be printed out and kept safe.
Avid scrapbooker Gail Ruddle looks
forward to hosting her Creative Memories
Open Home and welcomes anyone
interested in the hobby to attend.
During these unexpected COVID times,
Gail says, more people have been turning to
scrapbooking to reinvigorate a hobby and
celebrate the good times recorded in photos,
from recent times, or dating back decades.
Gail’s vision for this year is to get the
message out that Creative Memories is still
trading. She holds monthly scrapbooking
workshops, during the week, evenings and on
a Saturday, as well as a digital evening, where
she is available to educate and provide handson
assistance. She can also provide one-onone
assistance in your home or hers.
If you would like to know more about
Creative Memories, or re-connect with the
hobby, Gail is having an Open Home on
Saturday, May 21, 10am to 2pm.
the course’s impact on Pasifika
Faatoese said early analysis
of data showed all participants
dropped body fat and had
lower triglyceride levels.
High triglycerides are often a
sign of other conditions that
increase the risk of heart disease
Pegasus Health chief executive
Mark Liddle said Puāwai-Kai
helps people learn how small
changes in the way they live can
add up to big changes in their
health and well-being.
A big change for Taitoko has
been growing his own food.
“Being Māori, it’s been getting
back to the garden and learning
about that again. Because we
have been distant. We come into
the city and found the easy food,
the fast food to get by. But is it
the healthiest food? I don’t think
so.
“So it’s going back to the
my whole family is starting to
Board requests briefing over vape store rise
• By Emily Moorhouse
FRUSTRATION from residents
about vape stores opening in
Addington has prompted the
area’s community board to
investigate vaping restrictions.
The Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board has
requested a briefing on vaping
restrictions through smokefree
legislation.
Board member Callum Ward
was approached by resident Jo
Robertson, who is concerned
about the concentration of vape
stores in a small area like Addington.
Ward said the board hasn’t
formed a position on the issue
yet and is awaiting a briefing.
“We know that vaping does
have negative health consequences
and is no longer just a
replacement for smokers,” he
said.
Ward also mentioned the risk
of vaping undoing a lot of work
that’s being done in society to
prevent people from getting addicted
to nicotine, particularly
young people who go straight to
vaping.
Robertson, who is school
community liaison at Addington
School, said vaping is being
discussed among residents due
to an increase in vaping shops set
to open in the area.
She said there was already
two vape shops in Addington
and another one was going to be
opening soon, as well as dairys
selling vapes.
“It’s probably to do with the
proportion of kinds of shops that
are in the community,” Robertson
said.
“If you end up with a lot of
liquor stores, vape stores, it just
tips the balance of stores that are
bringing positive health-promoting
things into the community to
stores that are bringing kind of
health-constraining things.”
Robertson said she wants the
city council to talk about putting
regulations in place rather than
“just letting the market decide”.
“I think the community would
like to see things that are bringing
health and well-being into
our community,” she said.
The manager of Hoopers
CONCERN:
Addington
resident Jo
Robertson
said she
wants
the city
council to
have more
regulations
around
what kinds
of shops can
open in the
community.
Vapour in Addington, who
declined to be named, said he
had noticed a few different vape
shops in the area, something his
customers said wasn’t necessary.
The business has been operating
for roughly five years and
hasn’t received any complaints
from residents.
“I believe we are serving people
who want to quit smoking,” he
said. “What most non-smokers
or non-vapers don’t realise is that
people addicted to nicotine become
aggravated when they can’t
have it. It’s like having a morning
coffee.”
He said the business has
helped people quit smoking and
as the price of tobacco increases,
it was important to provide
an alternative.
Let's Take a
Look Together
The property market would be
defined as one of New Zealand’s most
significant economic determinants.
It requires constant interpretation
and review, including looking ahead
– sometimes well ahead.
Although stepping into the future is
potentially scary, long-term business
sustainability requires just that. Recently
I got an appreciation of what that
future could potentially look like using
the strategic intelligence detailed in
a report by The Real Estate Institute
of New Zealand titled Megatrends: A
Report on New Zealand Property 2022.
It’s a significant document, of relevance
not just to those in the real estate sector
but anyone with an eye on global and
local property trends.
Remembering that a megatrend is a
major shift in environmental, social
and economic conditions that can
substantially change how we live,
these are some of the ones that
stood out to me:
• The return of the home office – this
came under the megatrend titled
‘Hybrid Working’.
Due to COVID, home offices have become
a vital consideration when purchasing
and I only wish I’d incorporated one when
we built a new home six years ago. At the
time of building, I thought an office was
outdated and would never be used, but
how wrong I was and how much easier
having one would have made life during
periods of lockdown and isolation.
The reason this pre-empts a potential
megatrend is what would happen if
everyone wanted to work from home
permanently.
• Digitisation – yes, there’s a strong place
for digitised processes with automated
tasks fitting this space. But the report
noted that people remain essential in real
estate areas where human connection
and creativity are required. Phew! I was
pleased to see that, but it’s really about
superb connectivity skills and creativity
aimed at maximizing a client’s returns
whilst maintaining transparency.
• Rental Reality – I think this one will come
as no surprise. Homeownership rates are
falling and there is a greater acceptance
of renting rather than owning.
For the landlord, there’s the benefit of
a return on his/her investment and for
the tenant it can allow them to invest
their resources (given they have them)
in a more diversified number of assets
besides a mortgage.
There’s also the development of
institutional investment. If you want
to know more about this practice, I’d
encourage you to download the whole
report. It details this sector, which in North
America is considered a major investable
asset class while being embryonic in
other parts of the world including NZ.
So why have I told you all of this? It could
be because I wanted to get my word
count up, it could be because it interests
me, which it does, or maybe it’s because
it gives us all tips and insights into where
our future could be heading – and it’s a
great time to start talking about just that.
