Secret
camera
bid to
identify
boy racers
• By Susan Sandys
PEOPLE ARE secretly putting
surveillance cameras on their
properties to try and help police
catch boy racers.
It comes as boy racer activity
continues to be a problem,
particularly in the Selwyn
District.
Senior Sergeant Anna Lloyd
said increasing numbers of
residents were putting up
surveillance cameras outside
their homes to capture night-time
footage of burnouts.
Police were then using the
footage to identify and then
take action against specific
drivers.
“If it assists us in identifying
some of these vehicles that are
doing burnouts we can use that
later on to go and impound the
vehicle,” Lloyd said.
Residents were allowed to
legally operate security cameras
at the front of their homes, as
long as they were not capturing
private spaces, such as a
neighbour’s home or yard, she
said.
Identifying offenders and their
vehicles was not always possible
for police to do at the gatherings
themselves.
A LOADED pistol was
allegedly found in the luggage
of a Christchurch Head Hunter
gang member as he prepared to
board a domestic flight.
He was returning home to
Christchurch after being in
Auckland to celebrate the 20th
The firearm was allegedly
THE WEATHER looks like
it will be fairly brutal but that
isn’t deterring Nicola Garlick
planning to have a yabba dabba
doo time on the annual Tranz
Alpine Scooter Safari Cancer
Society fundraiser on Saturday.
Garlick has dressed up her
50cc Yamaha scooter as the
Fred Flintstone Flintmobile
for the 250km journey from
McLeans Island to Hokitika.
“The inspiration I had, was
to copy what my late father had
once made for a Lions fundraiser
– a Fred Flintstone car
over a quad bike,” she said.
It will be Garlick’s third safari
over the alps. Nearly 300 people
have so far registered.
Garlick, a teacher aide from
West Melton, rode her first
safari with one of her sons
dressed as the Super Mario
brothers. Last year she dressed
as a chicken.
It took her three months to
build the Flintmobile.
“The wheels are made of
expanding foam with fiberglass
over the top, the dash and other
things are made from plastic
and cardboard. The pipes here
are drain pipes with a bit wood
bog for texture and the wooden
sides are plastic and cardboard
with old curtains stitched onto
them and stuffed with pillows,”
she said.
She lost both her parents to
cancer and rides the safari to
support the Cancer Society.
“It’s great riding with so many
others, many dressed up like
me,” she said.
The journey takes about nine
hours. Garlick said one of the
highlights, other than the Sheffield
pie stop, was making it to
was arrested shortly after 1pm
on Wednesday and charged
with unlawful possession of a
firearm and ammunition.
Court documents show the
firearm was a Browning 7.65
calibre pistol, which is understood
was loaded with four
rounds of ammunition.
The Christchurch man is next
the top of Porters Pass.
“When I finally made it up to
the top of Porters Pass last year
I gave dad a big fist pump as it
was very exciting just to have
made it up there, the chicken
suit caught the wind and made
it very hard to ride at times,” she
said.
due to appear in the Manukau
District Court at the end of this
month.
The alleged discovery of
the firearm in such a brazen
manner comes shortly before a
nationwide police crackdown to
“suppress, disrupt and enforce”
unlawful gang activity.
Gatherings
pose road
safety risk
• From page 1
“Often we can’t get close
enough. By the time they see
us coming they stop doing that
and move on, so we don’t get the
opportunity to identify these
vehicles,” Lloyd said.
And the sheer volume of the
gatherings, sometimes involving
more than 100 cars, could also
make it difficult for police to identify
offenders at the scene.
“Usually by the time we break
up a group like that, we can’t pinpoint
who has done what, but it is
really helpful to go back through
footage.”
Residents did not want boy
racers outside their homes damaging
roads. She said while the
gatherings themselves posed a
road safety risk, the black burnout
marks left behind could also present
a risk by covering white and
yellow road safety markings.
She said residents putting up
some cameras were also helping
deter boy racers from their areas.
“If they know they are going
to get caught in a particular area
they won’t go there, it’s a real
deterrent,” Lloyd said.
Extra beds for
intensive care
A NEW intensive care space
with 12 extra beds opened
at Christchurch Hospital on
Tuesday.
Health Minister Andrew Little
officially opened the space, which
was funded from the Government’s
rapid hospital improvement
programme.
“This new space will provide
additional critical care support
for the people of Canterbury and
ensure non-Covid patients are
safe when Covid patients are being
treated,” Little said.
Little said the project has been
completed ahead of schedule
and under budget, and is one
of 24 hospital upgrades funded
through the RHI programme
the Government announced in
December.
Body in garden murder: Victim was
Rena Joyce was jailed
on Tuesday for the
brutal murder of her
partner Martin Berry.
His sister speaks about
her “funny, kind, quiet”
brother who was
portrayed as a monster
by Joyce. Anna Leask
reports
IN LATE December 2020, Rena
Joyce attacked Berry with a
kitchen knife – stabbing him
repeatedly, cutting his throat.
She dragged his body out of
his Papanui home and dumped
him in a compost heap, barely
covering him with vegetation and
rotting food.
Joyce, who also went by
the surname of Maloney, was
sentenced to life imprisonment at
the High Court at Christchurch
on Tuesday. She will have to serve
a minimum of 13 years and nine
months before she can apply for
parole.
Justice Joathan Eaton said Joyce
had not been able to show any
remorse for what she had done.
During her trial much was
heard about the life and times of
Joyce and her turbulent relationship
with Berry.
But the jury also heard about
the victim – a much-loved
FAMILY: Martin Berry’s sister Joanna Statham (right) said his final moments haunted her.
brother, uncle and friend who, in
spite of an addiction to alcohol,
had a brilliant mind and a kind
heart.
Joyce made him out to be a
monster – a brutal and aggressive
alcoholic, a cruel and nasty bully,
a mean and controlling man who
tortured and terrorised her for
years.
But for those who knew Martin
Berry, his murderer’s narrative
was a vile fabrication.
No one in his inner circle will
shy from the fact Berry was
plagued by alcoholism – but they
all vehemently maintain he was a
good man, non-violent, thoughtful,
gentle, kind and extremely
loving.
“He was our big brother,
uncle to his nieces and nephews,
brother-in-law and son,” his sister
Joanna Statham said.
“He was funny, kind, quiet and
he enjoyed a simple life . . . What
Martin wasn’t always able to put
into words he would show you
through his actions and time he
would spend with you.
“Martin was very witty and
had a great sense of humour.”
Berry’s story began in Whanganui
in 1965.
The oldest of Shirley and Joe
Berry’s three children was quiet
but highly intelligent and keen on
nature and sport.
The family lived a few years in
the United Kingdom but settled
in Whanganui.
They had no other family in
New Zealand so the three Berry
children became close.
As a youngster, according to
“He was a real whizz
mathematically, and he
loved chess”
– Joanna Statham
Statham, Berry was “passionate
about a lot of things”.
“He was a real whizz
mathematically, and he loved
chess,” she said.
“He always loved insects and
spiders and little creatures and
was always trying to save
them.”
Berry also loved all things
gardening and, like his father,
was voracious when it came to
planting and tending.
Statham said her brother had
an “amazing general knowledge”
and was very interested in events
around the globe.
“He would read newspapers
whenever he could get hold of
them and his nieces were always
fascinated at how quickly he
would complete sudoku puzzles,”
she shared.
“When he was younger he
loved playing soccer and he loved
cricket as he got older too.”
One thing Berry did not master
was making friends.
He was known to keep to
himself and found it hard to form
relationships.
But his gentle nature and love
for those close to him was never
in question.
‘funny, kind and quiet’ says sister
Berry started his education at
Tawhero School before moving
through George’s Intermediate
and Whanganui Collegiate.
When he left school he got a
job at a bank – which was no
surprise to his family.
“Numbers were his thing, so it
made sense for him to go into the
bank and work there,” Statham
told the court during the trial.
“He enjoyed that because I
think he enjoyed belonging to
something and being part of
something and being able to use
his talents.”
Berry seemed to come out of
his shell a bit, joining an indoor
netball team and playing soccer
and cricket with colleagues.
He also joined the company
social club and started getting
out more.
“He made friends,” Statham
recalled fondly.
“He did have a group of friends
that saw him through a lot of
hard times later on.”
Those hard times came when
Berry started to drink.
In the beginning, it wasn’t an
issue, but over time it was clear
he had a problem.
“When he started drinking I
think it was because, at times, he
was a little bit socially awkward,”
his sister said.
“And (alcohol) probably gave
him confidence. He hadn’t really
grown up with many friendships
so the drinking probably gave
him that little bit of courage to be
more social.
“But he eventually lost his job
due to drinking – I don’t know
the exact details but I imagine he
was probably late and just found
it hard to maintain a job.”
Berry’s drinking would take
over his entire life.
“He was drinking quite a bit,
Mum and Dad wanted to help
him but he needed to be the
one to decide to change things,”
Statham said.
“I don’t know what triggered it
BURIED: Martin Berry (left) and police arriving at the scene of his murder.
PHOTO: ANNA LEASK/NZ HERALD
but he came around to Mum and
said ‘I really need help’.
“He had found a place or
been advised of a place in
Christchurch. In some ways, he
needed a break from his group
of friends in Whanganui . . . so
quite courageously he got on a
plane.”
Berry admitted himself to The
Deanery, an alcohol rehabilitation
centre in the central city.
His family said it “really did
help him” and Berry was able to
regain control of his life.
Eventually, he left the facility
and went flatting in Christchurch.
After the death of his
father, his mother Shirley decided
to sell her property in Whanganui
and move south to be near
him.
She purchased a house on
Main North Rd in Papanui and
Berry moved in with her.
“They lived together, helped
each other out, shared the costs,”
said Statham.
“It was company for them both,
they could both really relate to
each other.
“He loved it because (the house)
had a garden; it wasn’t all set up
but he could see the potential of
what he could create.”
After a while, Berry was back
on his feet and he wanted a bit
more independence.
Statham and her husband had
moved to Leeston and Shirley
went to live with them.
Berry would bus out to see his
family regularly and they in turn
visited him in Papanui.
They would go to lunch and
then he would take them back to
the house to show off his latest
garden projects and upgrades.
“He was very proud of it,”
Statham remembered.
Berry still drank and still
struggled at times but by and
large he was doing well.
“He would have periods of
abstinence and drinking over the
years,” his brother David Berry
said.
“Martin was not an ‘all or nothing’
alcoholic – he could have a
drink or two if we went out.”
In 2006, Statham moved overseas
and Shirley bought a flat on
Blair Ave in Papanui, about 1km
from her son’s place.
“They could walk and meet up
at the mall or go to each other’s
houses,” Statham said.
“We just knew how much he
enjoyed the connection – both of
them did.
“He had my dad’s little dog, he
took care of him, and they would
meet up and go to the park.”
Life was going well for Berry,
his sister felt, until he met Rena
Joyce.
That meeting came over
Christmas, 2017.
Berry flew home to Whanganui
to spend the holiday with his
brother David and his partner
Pearl. They went to a neighbourhood
Christmas party and Joyce
was a friend of the host.
It wasn’t long before Joyce was
moving to Christchurch and into
Berry’s home.
Statham said Joyce moving
in was “quite sudden” – just six
months after they met, but her
brother was “very excited”.
Berry’s siblings were concerned
but he seemed happy so they
supported him in his new relationship.
But that support quickly began
to waiver.
Like Berry, Joyce also had
issues with alcohol and from
almost the beginning, their union
was punctuated by arguing,
fighting, abuse and violence.
“Initially I think it was all
lovey-dovey and then I think
reasonably quickly it deteriorated
into violence – drunken violence,”
David Berry told the court
during the trial.
“He would tell me that she’d
attacked him and this became a
regular occurrence. I went down
there and stayed and she attacked
me one night, for no reason.
“Pretty much whenever she got
drunk it would degrade into violence.
She nearly bit his nose off
once, she smashed a chair over
him, she beat him, she smashed
the telephone and hid phones so
he couldn’t ring.
“Sometimes he said he’d just
leave and walk the streets all
night. He couldn’t go home for
fear of further violence.”
David Berry said his older
brother “didn’t know how” to
‘I feared for his life’
– David Berry
leave his abusive partner.
“It was really bad,” said David
Berry.
“I feared for his life – it was an
incident away in my eyes.
“We implored him to get away,”
David Berry told the court.
“He couldn’t leave, he didn’t
know how to get away from her.
She just wouldn’t leave and he
didn’t know what to do.”
Martin Berry would call his
brother “covertly” to disclose
what was going on.
He had to call in secret because
Joyce “was always hovering” when
he was able to use the phone.
“He was beaten up so bad once
they called an ambulance,” said
David Berry.
“She would throw things at
him, she would chase him with
household objects. She chased
him with a knife several times.
“I think she would use anything
that was available.”
Statham spoke with her brother
at least once a month but that
stopped almost completely when
Joyce came on the scene.
Statham told the court during
the trial that Joyce “was quite
racist and verbally abusive” on at
least one phone call.
She said “it was hard to get past
what she said” and that resulted
in fewer phone calls to Berry to
avoid engaging with his
partner.
Her last conversation with
Berry is haunting.
“He told me he wanted to leave
and buy a bit of land in Whanganui
to get away from Rena,”
Statham told the Herald.
“I wish he had let David and
I help him to do this, then he
would have been free from her.
“He could have been happy
being home again in Whanganui
with a big garden to potter in.”
Statham, who only met Joyce
once, said her brother confided
in her about the abuse a number
of times.
“It was quite violent,” she said
of the relationship.
“I knew he was scared, I knew
he wanted to leave her but he
didn’t know if he could.
“He was scared of Rena. He
was trapped.
David Berry last saw his
brother on December 29 2020 –
just hours before Joyce murdered
him.
He and Pearl were in Christchurch
and they invited Berry
and Joyce to lunch at an Indian
restaurant.
“He looked really good. I had
no reason to think anything
untoward would happen,” said
David Berry.
didn’t know how to leave her’
After Berry died it emerged that
Joyce had a string of convictions
for assaulting Berry and had spent
time in prison as a result.
On one occasion Berry called
police and said Joyce had attacked
him and “had a knife”.
Another time she “told him she
would kill him if he rang police
again”.
The courts granted Berry a
protection order against Joyce,
but that did not keep them apart.
Soon after, police attended a
callout to the house and found
Berry with his t-shirt “ripped
and hanging off him”, bloodied
tissues nearby, broken plates and
smashed glass from the oven door.
That day, Berry told police he
did not want to make a complaint
but “wanted her out of the
house”.
Berry was also convicted of assaulting
Joyce on one occasion.
He pleaded guilty, admitting
he punched her but that “it was
in self-defence”.
Berry was open about the conviction
with his brother.
“She’d attacked him and he
just couldn’t do anything to get
away from her,” David Berry
recalled.
“He was just in a corner and
lost it and hit her, hit her once
in the face and I think she got a
couple of black eyes.”
He said he had never seen his
brother hit another person in his
life and he was known to be a
gentle person.
“Martin was not the sort of
person who would hurt a fly,”
David Berry said.
“I’ve never seen Martin hurt
anyone or be offensive towards
anyone.”
Statham said it was “impossible”
to put into words the impact
her brother’s “horrendous” murder
has had on the family.
“Martin’s horrific death is the
most distressing thing that has
ever happened to our small family,”
she told the Herald.
“Life has changed and will never
go back to what it was before.
“The heavy feelings of sadness
are present daily and the images
we have in our heads of his final
seconds are ever-present.
“The cruel way that Martin
was murdered along with finding
his belongings missing from his
house was a double shock.”
Statham said Joyce “denied
Martin any dignity he may have
had left by leaving him to rot in
the garden”.
“She denied us our last farewells
with Martin by being able
to see his body before he was
cremated,” she said.
“The funeral director asked if
we had any items of his clothing
to lay over his body bag, but she
had got rid of everything, there
was nothing left.
“Anything she couldn’t remove
from his house, she broke and
threw over the fence.
“All we have left to remember
Martin by were the bloodstains
left on the lounge floor and
initially the faint smell of where
his decomposing body had lain
in the garden.
“No family should ever be left
with this,” she said.
“Rena murdered the only
person who ever really loved her,
she will have to live with that
realisation forever.
“Her time in jail is a mere
formality, the real jail for her is
replaying in her head how she
took his life so cruelly – how she
destroyed any chance of happiness
with someone who actually
saw her, understood her and her
brokenness and loved her all the
more for it.
“Every day she will have to
wake up and remember she brutally
stole a life from a kind and
humble person.
“Our only hope is that one day
she will understand how senseless
it all was.”
Statham said Berry would
“forever be our big brother”.
“He will always be remembered
and loved and he can be
hurt no more now,” she said.
“David and I loved Martin so
much and we know that he knew
it. Nothing else matters in
the end.”
Call for Three Waters referendum
Ardern sent
letter after
MP’s no show
at meeting
A RESIDENTS’ association
has sent an open letter to Prime
Minister Jacinda Ardern after
Ilam Labour MP Sarah Pallett’s
no show at a water reform public
meeting.
The Avonhead Community
Group says it had now decided
to go to Ardern directly over
concerns about the Three Waters
reform.
It wants a
public referendum
on the
issue.
“We are a
voluntary,
non-political
residents’ group
Somnath
Bagchi
representing
more than 8000
households in
and around the suburb of Avonhead
in Christchurch,” the letter
written by the group’s chair Prof
Somnath Bagchi says.
“On April 26, 2022, we held
a public meeting at which we
invited local elected representatives
to discuss the Three Waters
reform and urban development
with residents. More than 400
residents attended and there
was almost unanimous
consensus that the Three
Waters reform should be
scrapped.
“Unfortunately, the
local Member of Parliament,
Ms Pallett, declined
to attend and was
not there to listen to what
her constituents had to
say. As a result, we have resolved
to write to you (Ardern) directly
to convey the community’s deep
Sarah Pallett
concerns about the Three Waters
reform.
“These concerns not driven by
political outlook but a
genuine fear about what
the reform will mean for
us and future generations
of New Zealanders.”
In the letter, Bachi told
Ardern while the group
“appreciate” the Government’s
purpose in reviewing
the Three Waters
infrastructure was to prevent a
repetition of Havelock North, the
reform was not the solution.
Bachi told Ardern: “It will lead
to the loss of local democracy.
Until now, our elected representatives
at local councils made
decisions on Three Waters. The
Government proposes to unilaterally
disempower citizens by removing
these assets from elected
bodies to the management of
appointed boards. If this happens,
we will have absolutely no
influence over decision-making
on rates, upgrades, or priorities.
“There is no way that
infrastructural issues at
suburban levels can be reported
effectively to a board which
oversees Three Waters for
most of the South Island.
In our experience, excessive
centralisation typically leads
to bureaucratic blind spots and
delays. We fear that pressing
local issues will be overlooked in
favour of grand-scale changes,
until we have another ‘Havelock
North’ on our hands.
“As ratepayers, we are especially
concerned that the transfer of
the Three Waters infrastructure
to the Government will make a
number of councils significantly
poorer. Us ratepayers will bear
the burden as local councils are
forced to increase rates to make
up for their loss.”
Bagchi told Ardern the
residents’ group felt down by the
way in which the Government
•HAVE YOUR SAY: Should
there be a referendum
on the Three Waters
reform? Email your views
to barry@starmedia.kiwi.
Keep responses to 200
words or less
has pressed on with the reform
in spite of widespread public
concern.
“An opportunity for
submissions at a select
committee stage has little value,
as by then there will be no scope
for fundamental change to the
intended reform.
“As head of Government,
you have the ultimate say as to
what goes ahead and what stops.
Please listen to the public’s concerns.
By all means monitor local
bodies more closely so that they
maintain infrastructure better.
But do not take away democratic
control of Three Waters. Scrap
the Three Waters reform.
If you do not feel that the vast
majority of New Zealanders
share our concerns, then
we suggest that you hold a
referendum before pressing
ahead with the reform. You
have held referenda previously
on cannabis and euthanasia.
The Three Waters reform is
no less significant. Let New
Zealanders decide their future
for themselves.”
City council
steps up use
of webinars
RESIDENTS WILL increasingly
be able to engage in the city
council’s decision-making
processes from the comfort of
their own home.
With most people now having
access to online technology,
the city council is moving to
introduce online meeting sessions
or “webinars” for public consultations
on key issues.
“Because of the Covid-19 pandemic
many of us are now very familiar
with the concept of online
meetings and webinars,” said city
council head of communications
and engagement Katy McRae.
“They have become a key business
tool and they’re also a really
effective way of reaching residents
who might not otherwise have the
time to engage with us.’’
McRae said the city council
trialled the use of webinars
recently with consultations on the
Draft Plan changes and the results
were positive, with attendance
numbers higher than what they
usually received in face-to-face
meetings.
“We want to reach as many
people as we can, in ways that are
most convenient for them. This
means doing things differently
from how we have approached
things in the past,” McRae said.
• From page 1
The sale has only just settled,
with the sale price, one of the
highest for Christchurch last
year, now in the public domain.
The Westons’ efforts to bring
the Victorian stables back to life
and turn it into a luxury accommodation
business featured in
an episode of Grand Designs New
Zealand in 2018.
The listing agent, Harcourts’
Alison Aitken, said in November
the family which purchased the
property and intended to turn it
back into a family home.
“The buyers are a local family
who love the house. This is going
to be a family home for them.
They are a lovely family,” she said.
She added: “It was always going
to be one of the highest sales [in
that corner of Fendalton] because
it is unique. People buy on emotion.
No one can replicate that
home. The history that has gone
with it.”
Another Grand Designs home,
on Waiheke Island, sold for
$3.55 million last year, and a
Mangawhai, Northland, bach
that featured on the show in 2018
sold for $4 million at auction at
the end of 2020.
Isabelle Weston told the New
Zealand Herald just before the
sale that the decision to sell the
property on Matai St West, in
Fendalton, was a “difficult and
emotional” one.
House a nod to Britten’s legacy
She said that since the
restoration and opening of
the accommodation business,
the couple’s lives had become
incredibly busy. They wanted to
spend more time with their young
children Adaline, 6, and Rafaella,
1, and needed a “dramatic change
of lifestyle” to do so.
“It’s a roller coaster of emotions.
I feel really, really sad but
also relieved with the decision
I’ve made to prioritise the kids,”
she said.
“It sits uneasily with you as a
mother when you really want to
give them more when you can’t.”
She said the decision to sell
was influenced by the fact that
Tim was fast approaching the age
at which her father John passed
away.
“Life can be really short. We
hope ours aren’t and we certainly
don’t want to miss out on the
kids’ foundational years but that
is what’s happening because we
are so busy.”
The property was bought
by motorcycle designer John
Britten in the late 1970s. He
died in 1995, and his house
was left uninhabitable after the
earthquake.
The Westons chronicled the
long restoration on Grand Designs
New Zealand. Their build
was ambitious, aiming not only
to bring the home back to life
but to also update it, with a new
garage that doubles as a studio
apartment.
The episode showed the rebuild
was thwarted by the discovery
of asbestos, miscommunications
and setbacks, with their initial
$2 million budget ballooning as
complications continued.
“It looks absolutely stunning,”
said host Chris Moller.
“I can see Tim and Isabelle’s
bold, modern influence here. The
sitting room . . . truly embodies
John’s wonderfully unconventional
style.”
The house featured many nods
to Britten’s legacy, including one
of his beloved motorbikes, which
lives in the sitting room.
Kiwi fantasy card game takes world by storm
Christchurch trading
card businesses have
seen an upsurge as a
popular Kiwi-developed
fantasy card game
continues to attract
thousands of new
players around the
world, both to progaming
and to lucrative
online card trading.
John Cosgrove reports
IN HIS right hand, card trader
Sam Smith holds a Flesh and
Blood ‘Heart of Fyendal’ card
worth approximately $300; in his
left hand is another worth over
$30,000.
The difference is when the
cards were made, what they’re
made of or printed on, and
how rare or desirable they are
among a growing number
of enthusiastic gamers and
professional trading card
collectors.
“It’s always a lottery when you
buy a packet of cards from the
shop,” Smith said from his recently
opened FAB Armory shop
in Sydenham.
“Last Friday a dad brought
in his two young boys to buy a
packet each so that they could
learn the game, and in one of
the packs was an unlimited
run, rainbow foiled ‘Heart of
Fyendal’. I immediately offered
to swap him 30 packets of cards
for it, so he was real pleased his
son now has heaps of cards to
play with.”
On the other hand, if you
wanted a cold foiled, alpha print,
first edition ‘Heart of Fyendal’,
like one of the two Smith recently
sold for $35,000 each, then
he said he will talk terms.
Trading cards have been
around for generations, with US
baseball cards being the first,
packaged with cigarettes and
sweets to stiffen the packaging in
the 1860s.
As colour printing technologies
developed, the popularity
of the cards grew and so too did
the value of trading, reaching
for an elusive-but-pristine ‘52
Mickey Mantle or LeBron James
rookie year card – currently
worth over $8.3 million
each.
In the 1990s, the advent of the
trading card game Magic – a
game involving a combination
of luck and skill, with two or
more players battling it out
as powerful wizards, using
collections of cards (spells) in
their decks – started to make a
toe-hold in the gaming industry.
Then along came Pokémon
cards, KeyForge, Yu-Gi-Oh!,
Game of Thrones, Sorcerer and
the latest world hit – Flesh and
Blood, a Kiwi-developed card
game popular with all ages.
Fast forward to the pandemic
and thousands of bored people
sitting around home and its
popularity only increased, with
many playing online or looking
to capitalise on their collections
by trading their cards.
“The game and the trading of
cards is booming,” said Smith.
“Last weekend there were 1100
professional players gathered
in New York, competing for
USD$100,000 in prize money,
with over 15,000 others watching
online.
“The game’s lead developer,
Chris Gehring from Legend
Story Studios in Auckland,
travelled to the tournament and
it was great to see him speaking
there.”
Smith said the fundamental
thing about the game is it’s very
social, and it just helps people
gain confidence and learn skills.
“Everyone can be as confident
as they want behind a computer
screen, but you develop a lot
more confidence interacting
with people on a physical and
social level.
“Basically, people are using the
card games to teach their kids
maths and stuff like that because
of the different attack and block
values.”
He believes it’s the modern
generation’s variation of society
card games like Poker, Euchre,
Bridge, Go Fish and others.
“You’ve got to make decisions
on the fly or just work out if
you’re basically going to have the
right resources to keep yourself
alive.”
Smith has been playing games
since he was young and after
learning the trading business
in Auckland, he returned to
Christchurch to train as a
plumber while still trading cards
online from his bedroom in
Wigram.
But a broken hand meant he
looked to his rapidly expanding
online sales for income and soon
FAB Armory grew into the retail
store it is today.
“There are often 10-20 players
coming here twice a week to play
in the shop in Sydenham and
we are still working hard online
to cater to the huge demand for
single cards.”
He said people of all ages,
lifestyles and incomes want
specific cards to make up a set or
collection – and are prepared to
pay for them.
“I sold a F&B Fyendal’s ‘Spring
Tunic’ to a famous client recently
for $35,000.
“It’s all about looking at the
market, understanding the
attraction of first editions cards,
finding them and gauging the
market to get the best price for
them,” he said.
A CHRISTCHURCH-raised
journalist filming a documentary
in Ukraine believes the
Ukrainian people will never
accept a settlement that sees
territory handed over to Russia,
as a result of the atrocities the
invading forces have inflicted on
the people.
Tom Mutch has been reporting
in Ukraine since before Russia
invaded at the end of February,
and is currently reporting out
of Kramatorsk, in the Donetsk
Oblast near where much of the
fighting is happening on the
Ukraine-Russia border.
Mutch, who went to Burnside
High School, said that while
the town he is currently in has
avoided much of the conflict,
one he passed through – Malaya
Rohan, 15 minutes from Kharkiv
– has experienced the brutality of
Russia.
“The town was under Russian
occupation for roundabout five
weeks. And they said that for
instance, some of the Russian
troops got drunk and they raped
a young woman in the area.
Another one shot and killed one
of the villagers, again, drunkenly.
One of the women said that
the Russian officers would take
potshots at her for fun late at
night and stuff like that,” he
said.
Mutch said the Ukrainians
have reacted with “revulsion
and horror” at each new report
of these atrocities – and it will
make it very difficult for them to
accept a deal that involves giving
up territory.
“Maybe in the past you might
be able to sell something like:
‘We have to like give up a certain
piece of territory so that the rest
of the country is sort of saved’.
“But now that we seem to
know what goes on in the areas
that Russia controls, people
would effectively see their country
folk being left to their deaths
more than anything.”
The atrocities are helping
further the Ukrainian resistance,
with more people signing up for
the military then there are guns
to provide. Military service was
compulsory prior to the invasion,
and Mutch said one recruitment
officer told him that people
would try to bribe them to get
out of the service.
“Now people are so desperate
to join up and fight that they’re
trying to bribe recruitment
officers to let them join the fight,
let them go to the frontline.”
He said everyone he has come
across all resent the Russians,
and that people are united in one
goal – forcing them out of the
country.
Their morale is aided by the
fact that the Russian armies
Shrimpy Boy making his mark on
• By John Cosgrove
HE MAY be called Shrimpy
Boy – but his field of expertise
is far removed from eating
crustaceans.
Instead Jayden Jackson races
drones at speeds of up to 180-
190km/h, which requires him
to memorise racing circuits and
learn how to navigate them in
the shortest time. To do this he
possesses excellent hand-eye coordination.
The drone racing pilot is the
first New Zealander to be invited
to join the Drone Champions
League in Europe.
The 25-year-old builder from
Lincoln is the latest addition to
the SDT Euroflytec drone racing
team, based in Spain.
His dream of racing
‘first person view’ drones
internationally has come to
fruition.
He said it all came as a bit of a
shock when his name was posted
on the team list.
“Somehow, my name came
up first in the draft – it blew me
away and I couldn’t believe it,”
Jackson said.
“The British team said they
would like to talk to me but the
Spanish team called first.”
The champions drone league is
one of the fastest-growing team
China, Japan, United States,
United Kingdom, Spain,
and Korea compete with 12
international players each.
All the drone racers attempt
to qualify for the final with
only one hour of practice on
purpose-built tracks that vary in
complexity from race to race.
The four fastest from each
team wins the chance to race in
the final grand prix event.
“So the competition is crazy
for those slots,” Jackson said.
“It will be like this throughout
the whole year, just like a
formula one qualifying session.”
To find the best of the best
worldwide, aspiring drone FPV
racers compete on the league’s
drone racing simulator online,
trying to earn the fastest time on
the circuits offered – all within
a strict seven-day window of
competition.
Jackson said anyone,
anywhere has the chance to
compete.
“But first you have to make
it into the top 300 worldwide.
That’s made up of the top 200
pilots from the pc steam gaming
software and the top 100 of
those playing on Xboxes and
PlayStations.
“You race again and then the
final 100 pilots selected have
five attempts during a 24-hour
window of opportunity to be
the fastest around the track.
From those results the draft
comprising of the top players are
selected.”
Before Covid-19 forced the
hybrid indoor/outdoor sport
to go online, competitors only
used the game to qualify for each
actual race, now this form of
hybrid racing is used for the real
grand prix too.
“It’s an awesome prospect
and it has been my dream since
I started in the sport two years
ago,” Jackson said.
The physical racing drones are
custom-built and made purely
for racing. They can’t be bought
off the shelf.
Each drone is hand-made by
the teams using cutting edge
technology, electronics and
software.
“The drones are one of a kind.
They’re custom-built and very
fast, full of titanium and carbon
fibre. It’s all the computing in
them, they’re a different kettle
of fish to the DJI’s most people
think of when you say you fly a
drone.”
“Races are timed and won by
the smallest of margins – 100th of
The actual drone races are
length and force the pilots to
WHILE THE increasing number
of severe droughts is playing havoc
with our waterways, more floods
could prove to be their friend.
Professor Angus McIntosh,
a specialist in freshwater
ecology at Canterbury
University, is heading
research into how climate
warming is affecting our
freshwater ecosystems and
how to best deal with those
influences in the future.
“A major climate-drive threat
to freshwater life in New Zealand
is increased frequency and magnitude
of drought,” he said.
“We know that river communities
collapse when rivers
dry completely, but we’re trying
to find the early warning signs
indicating when communities
start that process so we can offer
better advice in water allocation
decisions.”
A big challenge, especially in
some recent Environment Court
decisions, has been how to manage
river flows when interactions
between trout and native fish
(galaxiids) are involved, McIntosh
said.
“It’s often thought that native
fish will benefit when rivers are
lower because there will be fewer
of their predators – trout. What
NEWS 17
River ecosystems
respond to floods
Angus
McIntosh
Thursday May 19 2022 The Star
actually happens with no trout
present is that the number of
non-migratory native fish decline
as the river flow slows.
“Just how to manage
native fish populations and
how their interactions are
affected by longer periods
of low flow is going to be
tricky as climate change
bites.”
McIntosh says the flip
side of climate warming
is that large magnitude floods
could also be very influential.
“We were worried that Canterbury’s
autumn floods last year
would have wiped out native
fish in the headwater and alpine
areas.
“But, to our surprise, all
the populations have held on.
They’ve been greatly reduced,
but they’re still there. We’re now
interested in how quickly they
recover, whether the trout were
more or less affected and what
the long term effects are.”
McIntosh said the ability of
those native fish to deal with
ongoing extreme events such as
flooding will depend on the resilience
of their populations and
his freshwater ecology research
group’s research is now focusing
on how to enhance that ability.
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Amazing health miracles
from the silkworm
Serrapeptase an enzyme produced in
silkworms may become one of the most
widely used natural health solutions
for its ability to replace the majority of
anti-inflammatory drugs and bypass
operations. It is nature’s answer to pain,
chronic inflammation and clogged
arteries. Enzymes are essential for
life. Constantly working to build and
regenerate the body, they help digest
food, break down toxins and cleanse
the blood, in addition to thousands of
other functions. A lack of enzymes in the
body leads to food intolerances, allergies,
digestive issues, disease and poor health.
Studies show an average 70-year old has
only 20 percent of the enzymes found in
the body of a 20-year old.
Serrapeptase is a natural antiinflammatory,
which can clean, clear and
reduce inflammation while dissolving
non-living tissue including blood clots,
cysts, arterial plaque and mucus. One of
its major benefits is its ability to reduce
pain.
The serrapeptase enzyme was first found
in the intestine of the silkworm in the late
1960’s. The silkworm uses it to dissolve the
hard cocoon, allowing the moth to escape
as well as to digest the tough mulberry
leaves it feeds on. Serrapeptase can now be
produced commercially by a fermentation
process of the microorganism Serriata
Benefits from
the silkworm
Serrapeptase, an enzyme first discovered in the silkworm, could
become one of the most widely used natural health remedies due
to its ability to potentially replace the majority of anti-inflammatory
drugs & bypass operations.
Serrapeptase is a natural anti-inflammatory enzyme that according
to research can clean, clear & reduce inflammation while safely
dissolving non-living tissue such as blood clots, cysts, arterial
plaque & mucus. One of its major benefits is its ability to reduce
pain & clear clogged arteries.
SERRAPEPTASE SUPPORTS
• Inflammation relief, works on clearing the cause
• Pain relief
• Safely clearing the arteries of arterial plaque
that could lead to a heart attack or stroke
• Improving blood circulation
• Reducing high blood pressure
prIces
- knowledge makes the difference -
have shown serrapeptase to have
remarkable benefits in a vast range of
health conditions including; blocked
arteries, cardiovascular, arthritis,
asthma, lung conditions, pain, tumors,
autoimmune disease and many more.
In Germany, Dr. Hans Nieper clinically
researched serrapeptase and found it
could clear blocked arteries and prevent
the need for bypass operations. U.K.
pharmacist Dennis Gore talked on BBC
radio about the dramatic results he has
had with serrapeptase. One case was a
man in his 60’s who had been a heavy
smoker, was wheeled into his pharmacy.
He was breathless due to emphysema
and COPD and could hardly talk. He
was on antibiotics, oxygen and getting
bad infections. Dennis prescribed him
serrapeptase and three weeks later the
man walked into his pharmacy, with no
wheelchair and no breathlessness and said
to Dennis he was no longer on antibiotics,
nor oxygen cylinders and was feeling
great.
Serrapeptase has been shown to be
very safe supplement and according
to researchers can be used with most
medications. However let your doctor
know as medications may need reducing
or stopping as the need for them reduces.
Why did it take so long to
address Bromley stench?
I attended the community
meeting in Bromley about
the stench they’ve had to
endure for seven months.
It was heartbreaking
to listen to the toll it has
taken on their lives and
the uncertainty of all and
any health implications.
Seven months and they
still don’t know what started
the fire.
The clean-up has begun
but only after the community
started making so
much noise they could no
longer be ignored. Why
the delay?
Some will say central
government would have
been onto it sooner. If
that’s true, why didn’t the
local MPs put pressure on
the city council to act or
offer other assistance?
Why did it take so long
to listen to the community?
The mayor could have
called a meeting months
ago instead of waiting
for the community to do
so?
When Three Waters is
in place, will a far away
unelected water board be
more accountable or act
any swifter than elected
locals? I think not. – D
Mask wearing
Isn’t it time to lift the
mask mandate?
Every other mandate has
gone, so why are we still
wearing masks? Infection
has been rampant, passing
its peak.
Many people I know
have had Covid, including
myself, and it was hardly
devastating (apart from
the lethargy), just like the
flu really.
My son, a doctor, was
over from Australia and
was amazed to see masks
everywhere.
Apparently, masks don’t
actually prevent infection,
although they’re important
for those who are positive
so as not to infect others;
long-term, however, they
are not good for oral health
and also deprive the lungs
of oxygen.
So why continue? What
a boost for public morale
it would be, to see some
smiles again. – Chris
Watkins, St Albans
Vodafone, Commerce Commission
both appeal record $2.24m fine
• By Chris Keall
VODAFONE NZ and the
Commerce Commission both
say they’ll appeal a $2.24 million
fine over the telco’s historic
“FibreX” marketing.
The regulator says the fine,
which was handed down in the
Auckland District Court on
April 14, is too low to act as a
deterrent.
The telco wants to overturn
both the fine and the High
Court conviction that led to the
penalty.
On April 3 last year, Vodafone
was found guilty of misleading
consumers with its 2016-2018
“FibreX” marketing campaign
for the hybrid fibre-coaxial (aka
copper) cable service it offers in
parts of Christchurch, the Kapiti
Coast and Wellington. It began
as a cable TV service operated by
Telstra Saturn, and was inherited
by Vodafone when it bought
TelstraClear in 2012. Vodafone
says it’s spent tens of millions on
upgrades since.
Charges were brought under
the Fair Trading Act and the
telco faced potential fines of
up to $16m. The ComCom had
sought a $5.8m penalty.
Judge Pippa Sinclair found
Vodafone’s branding and advertising
was liable to mislead
MARKETING: Fibre X promoted at a Vodafone store in October 2017.
PHOTO: CHRIS KEALL/NZ HERALD
consumers into thinking that the
FibreX branded service was part
of the UFB fibre network.
She rejected Vodafone’s argument
that consumers would
understand that FibreX was a
“fibre-like” network delivering
superfast reliable broadband but
not pure fibre, due to the ‘X’ in
its name.
Commerce Commission
chair Anna Rawlings said this
morning that the $2.25m fine
did not appropriately reflect the
seriousness of the offending, and
the size and financial resources
of Vodafone.
The commission will argue
in its appeal that Vodafone’s
conduct was wilful, rather than
grossly careless, and allowed
Vodafone to make significant
commercial gains, Rawlings said.
“The fines imposed for this
type of offending must be
significant enough to deter
Vodafone and other large
businesses from engaging in this
type of conduct in the future.”
“We are very disappointed
with the outcome and
respectfully disagree with the
court’s decisions,” Vodafone NZ
said in a statement.
“Our appeal will set out
our strong belief that there
are several errors with the
original conviction decision
and that there are aspects of the
FibreX judgment that simply
misunderstand the services
we sell and are not in the best
interests of consumers or future
competition.”
The telco says its HFC service
does indeed offer fibre-like
service, and says that has been
proven by the Commerce
Commission’s own benchmark
testing, which found that, in
Vodafone’s summary, 100 per
cent of HFC Max plans were all
able to stream four simultaneous
UHD (ultra high definition or
4K) Netflix streams, offering an
equivalent experience to Fibre to
the Home plans in this respect.
The twin appeals come a
day after the telco industry
introduced two new marketing
codes, at the Commerce
Commission’s direction, which
are aimed, in part, at boosting
customer rights and making
it easier to compare different
broadband options.
Merger, acquisition activity still high – PwC
• By Jamie Gray
MERGER AND acquisition
(M&A) activity in New Zealand
remained high in the first
quarter, with private equity
investors again featuring
prominently, PwC said.
Corporate activity in the
education technology sector is
booming and PwC said it was
not seeing any signs of a slowdown.
Deal volume is in line with
levels seen throughout 2021 – a
record year, PwC said.
A number of 2021 deals also
continued into 2022 and have
been announced in this first
quarter.
Healthcare and educational
technology featured strongly in
the data.
Significant levels of deal activity
continued during the first
quarter of 2022 with 45 deals
completed or announced.
“While this is below the
numbers we saw in Q2, Q3, and
Q4 of 2021, it is still considerably
higher than pre-pandemic levels
and more than Q1 2021,” PwC
said.
Regan Hoult, corporate
finance leader at PwC told the
Herald M&A activity had driven
by a combination of factors.
“Looking at the data, there
has been strong international
interest.
“The other
theme that came
through was
strong private
equity activity
throughout the
quarter.
Regan
Hoult
“We continue
to see private
equity, both on
the demand
side of transactions – being big
acquirers of businesses and also
ultimately suppliers of businesses,”
he said.
Low interest rates have helped
corporate balance sheets and
how they look at acquisitions.
“Institutions are looking at
private equity as an asset class
that can provide strong returns
against the other asset classes,
which ultimately flows through
into deal activity.
“Yes, there are definitely headwinds
around inflation, supply
chains, rising interest rates and
the geopolitical situation, but
there is still a lot of private equity
capital looking to invest,” Hoult
said.
Corporates “may sit on their
hands”, focus on their balance
sheets, and look at their strategy
in the current environment.
“With the challenges that
STEADY: PwC says private equity investment in New
Zealand companies has continued unabated in the first
quarter.
PHOTO: NZ HERALD
come up through supply chain
issues and inflation, consolidation
can often be something that
can drive value,” he said.
In its report, PwC said that in
education technology (EdTech),
products that demonstrate
improved learning outcomes
and means of adapting learning
to changing learner and teacher
expectations are increasingly
sought after.
Since the beginning of the
Covid-19 outbreak in early 2020,
PwC has advised on three New
Zealand based EdTech transactions
with international investors
– Totara Learning, Education
Perfect, The Mind Lab.
Buyer interest in the sector
was not showing any signs of
reducing
PwC expects to see robust deal
activity continue throughout
2022 due to the significant
amounts of capital still available
in the market.
“Strong valuations and increasing
market uncertainty may
lead to business owners wanting
to accelerate the timing of exits.”
PwC cross-border deal flow
was strong in the quarter -–20
of the 45 deals involved offshore
buyers.
Australia (nine deals) and the
USA (six deals) continued to drive
international buyer activity.
The technology, media and telecoms
(TMT) sector continued
to see the most activity, while
financial services and industrials
and chemicals also featured
prominently.
TMT (14 deals) accounted for
almost a third of all activity during
the quarter.
Nine of the 45 deals announced
during Q1 2022 involved
a private equity buyer.
Over the last couple of years
M&A activity in the healthcare
sector had significantly increased
and valuations were higher than
ever before, PwC said.
There have been a number of
substantial transactions in recent
months including the sale of
Evolution Healthcare, Canopy
Cancer, Fertility Associates,
Pacific Radiology, Obex Medical
and The Selwyn Foundation’s
aged-care assets.
Work on healthcare-related
transactions in the past year
would represent circa 20 per cent
of PwC’s M&A related work.
“Covid-19 has heightened
investor awareness in the healthcare
sector and the importance
of the health system, leading to
increased interest and activity,”
the report said.
ARA INSTITUTE OF CANTERBURY
Confidence grows with
degree preparation course
Not everyone has the
confidence or academic
ability to launch straight
into a degree, no matter how
determined they might be to
gain one. Which is why Ara
Institute of Canterbury offers
a short preparation course
called the New Zealand
Certificate in Study and
Career Preparation.
Available in-class at Ara’s
Christchurch City campus or
online, the 19-week course
ensures that participants can
meet their chosen degree’s
entry requirements and that they have the
study skills and self-confidence needed to
be successful.
The course is designed specifically as
preparation for Ara degrees (and in some
cases diplomas) in health, lab science,
social work, business, ICT, architectural
studies, and engineering.
“If you want start a degree with us
next year, but you don’t meet the entry
requirements or you just want to brush
up on your academic skills, this course
is perfect,” says Melissa Barber, head of
Ara’s Department of Applied Sciences and
Social Practice. “And it’s especially good if
you’ve been away from study for a while.”
Melissa adds that the course can be
studied anywhere “whether you’re in
Picton, Hokitika, Temuka or anywhere
else” and fits around other commitments
such as work and family.
Zoe Liu decided she wanted to be a
nurse but she didn’t have any background
in science. Ara suggested she do the
preparation course before starting a degree
the following year. She did, and it turned
out to be exactly what she needed.
“The course was amazing,” Zoe says.
“As a mature student, as well as an
international student, I was a bit worried
to begin with, but I had great tutors who
were really patient with all my questions.
I learned a lot about the human body,
my English improved and I became more
confident in myself and in my decisions.”
Zoe says she felt “fully ready” to start
her nursing degree after completing the
certificate. “With all the knowledge and
study skills I’d developed, I was confident
I’d do well. I felt really great about it.”
Prompt application is recommended
as places in the July intake are filling fast.
Kona N provides the grin factor
THERE’S NO shortage of smallto-medium
sport utility vehicles in
today’s market.
However, if you want something
that definitely represents the sport
in that description, then you’ll
have to look hard. Sure, some of
the premium brands have feisty
wagons and SUVs, but they also
have premium prices.
Enter Hyundai’s Kona, it’s
now part of the N programme
of performance vehicles, and it
is a brute in terms of looks and
performance.
It’s an interesting move from
Hyundai, many Kona buyers are
lured by its clean, green image. You
can get Kona from fully electric
to petrol in several forms. In total
there are 10 Kona variants and
given that, it’s become a popular
model in the mid-size SUV
segment.
The Kona N is something
else, though, and it sits on a par
pricewise with the EV entry model
at around $70K, but the two are
chalk and cheese in terms of
concept.
Hyundai’s N series of cars, not be
confused with the tamer N-line, are
developed for speed, acceleration
and handling, they are engineered
through much development work
at performance facilities such as
South Korea’s Namyang research
and development centre and fettled
through many laps at Germany’s
brutal Nürburgring race track.
It was only weeks ago that I
evaluated Hyundai’s stroppy i30N
hatchback, a car that I delighted
in with its power and handling, it
is a car that constantly tantalises
with its high boost turbocharged
2-litre engine, and although it’s
only a front-wheel-drive model
it competes well with those great
hot hatchbacks that are legendary
in that segment. Well, the Kona
N shares the same driveline as the
i30N, even to the point where it
drives out the front wheels only.
Just like the i30N, the Kona N’s
four-cylinder engine develops
206kW and 392Nm, maximum
power is realised comparatively low
at just 5500rpm, although it will
pull happily to almost 7000rpm,
but it’s the area of maximum
torque that is most interesting.
It is realised all of the way from
1950rpm to 5600rpm, which when
you diagnose all of the figures there
is a lot of mid-range pull that never
wilts.
Unlike the I30N, the Kona N
doesn’t get a manual gearbox
option. It shares the dual clutch
system which you treat just like an
automatic transmission, there are
simply just two pedals – accelerator
and brake.
I like DCT gearboxes, they have
quick, sharp shifts that in the Kona
N’s case can be made manually by
the gearshift lever itself or through
steering wheel-mounted paddles.
In terms of how all this gels
is quite remarkable, the Kona N
is a deliberate sports car and it
has all the equipment to usher in
and contain movement. Take the
brakes, for example, they are huge
and have friction compounds that
FEISTY: Huge rear wing sits above the tailgate.
HYUNDAI KONA N: Race-track potential thanks to high performance engine and brakes.
can take prolonged use. Hyundai
even encourage track time in
the Kona N, there are features
to support that – an on-screen
stopwatch and a shifting pattern
that recognises dynamic driving,
activating automatically by
selecting the appropriate gear, and
shift timing that provides optimal
performance.
One of the systems that is quite
quirky is what Hyundai label
N grin shift, it works alongside
the standard N buttons which
in themselves provide a turbo
overboost function lifting power
an extra 7kW. The NGS button
releases maximum power of
the engine and transmission for
20sec, according to Hyundai,
performance that is sure to bring
a grin to the driver’s face. When
the button is pushed, a countdown
begins on the instrument cluster
showing the remaining seconds.
There is also a power shift
feature, it engages when the car
accelerates with more than 90 per
cent of throttle, thereby mitigating
any reduction in torque by using
upshifts to deliver maximum
power to the wheels. This initiates
a type of push feel through the
driveline.
With all of these systems
available there’s no doubt the Kona
N becomes an exciting car to drive,
it is truly a car that likes to have
its freedom. It hunts at open road
speed and it definitely wants to
deliver. Of course, I had to drive
within the legal requirements but
• Price – Hyundai Kona N,
$69,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4215mm; width, 1800mm;
height, 1565mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1998cc, 206kW,
392Nm, eight-speed DCT
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 5.5sec
• Fuel usage – 8l/100km
I can report it is an absolute blast
getting to 100km/h, that time
takes around 5.5sec. According
to overseas reports it will also fly
through a highway overtake –
80-120km/h – in 3.5sec. On the
subject of figures, Hyundai also
claims a 240km/h top speed.
For me, though, the Kona N was
more about its handling prowess.
Just like the i30N, the suspension
has been engineered to deliver
stable, controlled yet exciting
cornering ability.
Providing the grip in the first
instance are wonderful Pirelli
PZero tyres (235/40 x 19in), they
steer beautifully and provide
solid feedback. The Kona N’s fully
independent suspension
is electronically adjustable,
depending on what drive mode
is selected, but you can feel the
dampers tighten and become
firmer in N mode, the car squats
and sits tidily in the rear as
gravitational load shifts in a corner.
I took the test car west and
presented it with some of
the trickiest corners on the
Canterbury Plains, it fair blasts
between corners and attacks
the bends with precision and
accuracy, turn-in is decisive and
body balance uncannily stable for
a vehicle that sits relatively high at
well over 1.5m.
If you also like the feel of
pressure when the brakes are
activated firmly, then they won’t
disappoint, retardation is decisive.
The Kona N is a true
performance model and I guess
that is why it commands a $69,990
price tag.
However, for that money you
get a lot of kit – alcantara trim,
electrically-adjustable and heated/
cooled front seats, heated steering
wheel, satellite navigation, headup
display, smart cruise control,
keyless entry and ignition and a
host of clever safety features.
You are also getting many cars
all in one package, it’s an SUV for
sure, but it’s also a handy sports
wagon. Money depending, I’d be
very interested in the Kona N as I
head towards retirement, it is a fun
car and one that provides the grin
factor that Hyundai is so keen to
develop.
Hyundai is also broadening
the N concept, the Kona N
sits alongside the desirable hot
hatchback i30N, and it’s recently
been joined by the i20N. I certainly
hope I get to sample the latter.
