A mother’s story of loss,
grief and a cancer blow
A mother who has
experienced tragedy
still manages to find
joy in the small things.
After losing her 13-dayold
baby and being
diagnosed with stage
four ovarian cancer
with a life expectancy
prognosis of five to 15
years, Sarah Luxon uses
her blog to write about
the “messy things” in
life. Emily Moorhouse
reports
FOUR YEARS ago Sarah Luxon,
34, gave birth to what appeared
to be a perfectly healthy baby girl
named Mackenzie.
However, the second week into
Mackenzie’s life, Sarah noticed
she was becoming quite grizzly
but after a check up from the
midwife, was told everything was
okay.
has raised more than $3000 for Kenzie’s Gift, a charity that supports families through grief and loss. (Above) – Sarah and
husband Greg, along with daughters Hazel, 7, Willa, 2, and step-daughter Tayla, 19, travel to Tekapo each year on the
Vehicles driving through
park ‘a safety concern’
• By Emily Moorhouse
ANTI-VEHICLE bollards may
be installed at Radley Park,
Woolston, after complaints of
anti-social driving through the
area.
Linwood Ward councillor
Yani Johanson was approached
by a local resident concerned of
damage being caused to the park
by vehicles driving through it.
Johanson raised the issue at
a Waikura Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community
Board meeting after the
resident put a customer
service request through to
the city council.
The resident was told city
council staff will monitor
the situation, with no
signage recommended,
so the ticket (report) was
closed.
Yani
Johanson
UNAUTHORISED: The entrance to Radley Park (left) where
a resident wants bollards installed to stop vehicles entering.
Johanson said vehicles were
driving through the park
where the cycle connection
is. He said he has followed
this up with the city
council, as well as raising it
with the community board.
Johanson said he hopes
staff can find a suitable
solution to the problem,
such as temporary signage
to prevent vehicles entering the
area, until bollards can
be installed.
“It’s a safety concern as well,
there’s a dog area there and a
playground and cycleways,” he
said.
City council community
parks manager Al Hardy said
community parks staff have
received the action item from
the community board and will
provide advice at a future meeting.
Jayne and I would like to thank you for the work you’ve done to get us where
achieving the result today that exceeded our expectations. The detail and
professionalism has been on point. Staging, photography, the video along
with the marketing campaign all leading to a great property to present to
‘It’s made me appreciate what’s actually
• From page 1
A few days later, feeling like
something wasn’t right, Sarah
took Mackenzie to an after hours
medical centre.
Within minutes of arriving,
Mackenzie’s heart stopped beating.
“It was horrible, just watching
my wee baby being resuscitated
and having to call my husband
to tell him that her heart had
stopped and to come in,” Sarah
said.
“She passed away very suddenly
and I had no idea what had
happened until the post-mortem
came back, and it took months.”
Mackenzie died from a heart
defect where a hole in her heart,
known as a patent ductus arteriosus,
hadn’t properly closed over
after being born as well as having
high blood pressure in her lungs.
Sarah said while the hospital
staff did an incredible job at trying
to help Mackenzie, it was too
much for her little body to handle
and she died at 13-days-old.
“She coped with what ended
up being fatal very well right up
until her body went: ‘We can’t do
this anymore’.”
Afterwards, Sarah felt there
was a lack of mental health
support offered with no funded
clinical psychologists or counsellors
to talk to.
She attended a support group
but said she would have benefited
much more from one-on-one
therapy, and feels as though her
seven-year-old daughter, who
was two at the time would have
benefited from this as well.
Every August, for Mackenzie’s
anniversary, Sarah goes to Tekapo
with her husband Greg, their
daughters Hazel, 7, and Willa, 2,
and her step-daughter Tayla, 19,
to connect as a family through
what is a very hard time.
Last year when they were checking
out of their accommodation,
Sarah asked to book for the same
time next year and got talking to
the woman at reception.
She opened up about the reason
behind their yearly visit and
the pain of loosing Mackenzie.
The woman said to Sarah:
“That’s given me goosebumps,”
and told her about Kenzie’s Gift,
a charity that supports families
going through grief or loss.
The charity was doing a winter
swim challenge to raise money
for mental health to go towards
helping families in similar situations
to Sarah’s.
So Sarah decided to commit to
the winter swims, mostly at New
Brighton Beach to raise money
for what she described as a very
worthwhile cause.
“I’m not a big putting myself
out there person but I did 13 dips
so one for each day of Mackenzie’s
life,” Sarah said.
Sarah, who isn’t a strong
swimmer started off with a goal
of raising $300 and was “very
touched” by people’s generosity
when she raised more than
$3000.
However, during her dips,
Sarah noticed a lump on her
abdomen that she assumed was a
hernia.
But after feeling fatigued and
experiencing bowel issues, she
went for a check up.
After multiple visits to doctors,
a gynaecologic oncologist, orthopaedics,
an ultrasound, an MRI,
a biopsy and months of waiting,
Sarah was diagnosed with stage
four ovarian cancer and given a
five to 15-year prognosis.
During this time, Sarah continued
with her winter dips, in
spite of it being painful on her
abdomen.
Sarah said she felt frustrated
with how long it took to get a diagnosis
and said if it was a lump
on her breast she would have got
it checked straight away.
“As women we get told to check
our breasts, but we don’t hear
that there’s no screening at all
for ovarian cancer. It was not
something that I knew about or
considered,” she said.
“There’s just not enough awareness
about all of those issues and
people feel really awkward talking
about ovaries.”
Faced with a prognosis of up
to 15 years and still grieving the
loss of baby Mackenzie, Sarah
realised she felt alone, so started
a blog in hopes of helping others
going through something
similar.
She called it Joy in the Small
Things and posts regularly about
navigating life with her diagnosis
and sharing her experiences.
“I started it up just as a way
to share with people what was
happening with cancer and
the treatment and I found that
writing helped me work through
quite a few things emotionally
and mentally.”
“I felt quite isolated
or separated
because I didn’t
know anybody
else who had been
through a similar
experience with
having a daughter
die at 13 days and
then finding that
there’s not a huge
amount of awareness
on ovarian
cancer as well,”
Sarah said.
Sarah has undergone
surgery
to have all the
visible tumours
removed and began
chemotherapy
on Christmas Eve,
and is now on
hormone blockers to prevent any
further growths.
“Scientists haven’t done studies
on people with this cancer [ovarian]
so they don’t know how best
to treat it so it’s not that there
are drugs out there that aren’t
funded, it’s that they don’t know
what drugs to actually make
available for us,” Sarah said.
“There’s no research so it feels
quite lonely. They can’t even give
me a prognosis better than five to
15 years.”
Sarah said she’s still trying to
get her head around her prognosis
and gets tripped up on a
daily basis by her seven-year-old
asking questions
like will she ever
be a grandma?
“How do you
respond to that?
Yeah, it’s very
hard.”
Sarah has
stopped working
to spend as much
time as she can
with her family
and said she tries
her best to stay in
the moment.
“I can’t bring
myself to miss out
on the potentially
short time left
with the kids. I’m
enjoying taking
the kids to swimming
lessons and
being there at the
school gates for pick-up.”
Sarah said she feels incredibly
lucky for the people she has
around her and after all she’s
been through it’s changed her
perspective on life.
“It’s made me appreciate what’s
actually important, I don’t sweat
the small stuff,” she said.
“I just want to help people, I
just want to make a difference in
someone else’s life.”
Miniature gets makeover
A LOT of attention to detail and
a dash of nostalgia. Those are key
to the work artist Mike Beer –
aka GhostCat – is doing in situ,
restoring the miniature model
of the Port Hills at the Victoria
Park Visitor Centre.
The model was originally
created by Judith Streat and installed
as part of the visitor centre
upgrade in the early 2000s.
“It was really nice to see some
of the most popular places and
trails had worn away on the
model as you could literally see
where people had traced their
pathways,” said city council
parks programmes and partnerships
manager Kate Russell.
“But after more than 20 years,
the model was at the end of its
life and it was time for a refresh.”
The work is being done by
Beer, who has found his niche in
miniatures.
“I usually do more urban work,
miniature objects, buildings and
city stuff, so this was a bit out of
the ordinary for me,” he said.
“It’s not like these jobs come up
very often. I’m stoked to be doing
it. The Port Hills are such an
iconic part of Christchurch.”
Over the five days he’s been
working on it, he’s been focused
on making it look as realistic as
possible.
“The process is all about building
it up in layers. You start with
the landscape, the trees and the
scrub before you add detail,”
Beer said.
“Then we’ve added the tracks,
more details to the outer areas
like the sea of Lyttelton Harbour
and the roads, even some froth in
the ocean where it would hit the
hills.”
As well as restoring the model,
it’s also being updated with more
accurate track locations and
Māori place names.
Said Russell: “This project is
part of a wider refresh of the
centre, which will also include
Māori content such as providing
access to the Ngāi Tahu Atlas
and sharing the story of the
Māori relationship with the
James Patterson: The Stories of My Life
by James Patterson
The official autobiography of James Patterson, where he tells the story of his life and his
journey to becoming a world-renowned author who continues to captivate readers across
the globe. How did a boy from small-town New York become one of the world’s most
successful writers? · On the morning he was born, he nearly died. · Growing up, he didn’t
love to read. That changed. · He worked at a mental hospital in Massachusetts, where he
met the singer James Taylor and the poet Robert Lowell.· While he toiled in advertising
hell, James wrote the ad jingle line “I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us Kid.” · He once watched James
Baldwin and Norman Mailer square off to trade punches at a party. · He’s only been in
love twice. Both times are amazing. · Dolly Parton once sang “Happy Birthday” to James
over the phone. She calls him J.J., for Jimmy James. · Three American presidents have
invited him to golf with them.
These are the stories of James Patterson’s life: the most anticipated memoir of 2022.
The Avoidable War
the dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict Between the Us
and Xi Jinping’s China by Kevin rudd
A war between China and the US would be catastrophic, deadly, and destructive.
Unfortunately, it is no longer unthinkable. The relationship between the US and China,
the world’s two superpowers, is peculiarly volatile. It rests on a seismic fault of cultural
misunderstanding, historical grievance, and ideological incompatibility. No other nations
are so quick to offend and be offended. Their militaries play a dangerous game of chicken,
corporations steal intellectual property, intelligence satellites peer and AI technicians plot.
The capacity for either country to cross a fatal line grows daily. Former Australian Prime
Minister Kevin Rudd, who has studied, lived in, and worked with China for more than
forty years, is one of the very few people who can offer real insight into the mindsets of
the leadership whose judgement will determine if a war will be fought. Should the two
giants fail, down that path lies the possibility of a war that could rewrite the future of both
countries, and the world.
The Murders at Fleat House
by lucinda riley
The sudden death of a pupil in Fleat House at St Stephen’s - a small private boarding school in
deepest Norfolk - is a shocking event that the headmaster is very keen to call a tragic accident.
But the local police cannot rule out foul play and the case prompts the return of high-flying
Detective Inspector Jazmine ‘Jazz’ Hunter to the force. Jazz has her own private reasons for
stepping away from her police career in London, but reluctantly agrees to front the investigation
as a favour to her old boss. Reunited with her loyal Sergeant, Alastair Miles, she enters the
closed world of the school, and as Jazz begins to probe the circumstances surrounding
Charlie Cavendish’s tragic death, events are soon to take another troubling turn. Charlie is
exposed as an arrogant bully and those around him had both motive and opportunity to
switch the drugs he took daily to control his epilepsy. As staff at the school close ranks, the
disappearance of young pupil Rory Millar and the death of an elderly Classics Master provide
Jazz with important leads, but are destined to complicate the investigation further.. Because
Fleat House hides secrets darker than even Jazz could ever have imagined...
Football players affected
by shortage of training
grounds with lights
• By Emily Moorhouse
A GROWING football
club is making a bid
to have more playing
space with lights to
accommodate for training.
Cashmere Technical
Football Club teams often
have to sacrifice mid-week
training due to lack of
ground space for players.
Club representatives
Caroline Mason and Lisa
Young presented to the
Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board
to discuss how green space
is allocated in the area
and having grounds with
lights.
“Our numbers go up every
year. We’ve got nearly
1600 kids down there but
I’ve got 40 kids on the
waiting list because we
really haven’t got anywhere
else to put them at the moment,”
Young said.
“We constantly say no
to teams that they can’t
train during the week because
we’ve only got three
grounds with lights.”
The grounds with lights
the club uses are Garrick
Park, Whittington Ave and
Somerfield Park.
The club has players
from ages four through to
over 50s and often has to
close grounds used to train
on due to bad weather to
keep it in good condition
for weekend games.
“In the winter it gets
dark so training grounds
with lights are at an absolute
premium so that affects
the number of teams
we can have playing,”
Mason said.
Mason said by having
more space with lighting it
would create more opportunities
for other activities
such as walking football
for older members.
Mason said space for
playing has been an ongoing
issue for the club, particularly
due to not having
a lot of green space that
drains well on the South
side of the city.
Young said around 50
per cent of the grounds
used by the club can’t be
played on when it rains
and they sometimes have
to move to other spaces
such as Hagley Park.
Mainland Football chief
executive Martin Field
Dodgson said there comes
a challenge with finding
adequate participation
space during the week under
lights, particularly in
the south-east, north and
south-west of the city.
“It has got to the point
where we have clubs
SHORTAGE: Somerfield Park is one of three
grounds that has lights for Cashmere Technical
Football Club’s mid-week training.
Lisa Young
Caroline Mason
with waiting lists which
ultimately means we have
residents of Christchurch
(many of whom are kids)
sitting at home not able
to engage in physical and
social activity at their local
football club,” he said.
Dodgson said while
there is plenty of access to
fields during the weekend,
very few of these spaces are
lit, which means they’re
not accessible during the
week.
He also said there has
been an increase in players
wanting to participate in
mid-week games rather
than the traditional weekend
games.
Cashmere Technical
Football Club has a “catchment”
covering Hoon
Hay, Spreydon, Cashmere,
Waltham, Roimata,
Martin Field Dodgson
St Martins, Woolston,
Opawa, and extends to
Governors Bay and Diamond
Harbour.
Mason and Young
suggested looking at how
grounds are currently allocated
and used and the
potential for additional
grounds with lights.
The club also has a long
term vision of having an
artificial surface football
pitch.
Community board chair
Karolin Potter suggested
the group presents to the
city council as the issue
goes beyond the community
board’s area.
“You’re talking to us and
we’re one of seven boards
and this is a Christchurchwide
problem . . . I think
this is an issue for the
wider population of elected
members,” Potter said.
“We have emphasised
green space on this board
for quite a while now
because of the intensive
housing to compensate so
that kids have got places to
have fun and games and
climb on trees.”
However, Potter noted
the board will still request
staff advice on the network
plan for sports ground
availability and discuss
options for potential sites
with artificial turf and
lights.
THE IMPORTANCE OF
GIVING BLOOD
Recently my wee Macy, two year old Black
Labrador, gave her blood in the hope of
saving a dogs life. Lola donated blood
frequently in her earlier years before she
got kidney cancer and had chemotherapy,
rendering her unsuitable.
Macy used to be needle phobic and it
would take a lot of persuading and many
treats just to get her still enough to take her
own blood for testing. She has watched
me lots pulling blood from other dogs, so
this time around she was brave. Firstly we
needed to blood type her to make sure
she was a match for the patient. The dog
requiring her blood had
already had one past
transfusion, so this time
around we needed a
perfect blood match.
Luckily our external
laboratory move fast to
cross match the blood,
so within the hour we
knew Macy was going
to be a donor. Both
were DEA 1.1 negative.
Macy was then sedated
and prepared for her
transfusion. Blood is
taken via a large bore
needle from her jugular
vein and it takes 10-15
minutes to pull so she
needs to lie perfectly
still, hence the sedation.
She wasn’t readily
giving up her blood
but we managed to
get about 400mls to
transfuse. Immediately
the transfused Whole
Blood is administered
to the dog needing
it, slowly infused
via a pump system.
Often the recipient
immediately feels better and has more
energy.
The main reasons we transfuse a patient
is for ANEMIA (where a patient has a
reduced number of Red Blood cells) and
COAGULOPATHY (clotting dysfunction).
RBCs deliver oxygen to tissues so we can’t
do without these.
ANEMIA can be acute (road traffic
accidents) or chronic (as in cancers, poisons
like rat bait and Immume mediated
disorders). The dog Macy helped out
had Immune Mediated Anemia and
Thrombocytopenia (low platelets).
COAGULOPATHY can happen with
poisoning like rat bait, shock, cancers,
parasites, liver disease and acute blood loss.
To see whether a patient needs a
transfusion we clinically and physically
evaluate them. There are blood tests
we run to check RBC numbers, platelet
numbers and clotting times. Blood
products are not a benign treatment
and do come with potential risks, and
are also a financial consideration to the
patient’s owner - choosing the best time to
transfuse to provide the maximum benefit
is also essential, especially if finances are
limited for multiple
transfusions.
Then we need to
decide what blood
product to give. A few
types are fresh whole
blood FWB, fresh frozen
plasma FFP, packed red
blood cells PRBCs and
frozen plasma FP. The
patient in question got
FWB from Macy. This is
blood collected from
the donor in whole
form and contains both
red blood cells and
plasma elements. It is
easily collected and
requires no processing
before transfusion.
Main purpose - acute
blood loss or active
bleeding, as it replaces
what is directly being
lost. Unless transfused
to the patient within
6-8 hours of collection,
it is a poor source of
clotting factors. Main
indication for use is
anemia.
Blood transfusions don’t happen every day
but when a patient does require blood, it
needs to happen then and there if we are
to save a life. Many of the staff pets have
been blood typed so now we have a pool
of donors to call on if needed. Obviously
they need to be healthy, fully vaccinated,
the right weight to give up 1/2 litre blood
and not receiving chemotherapy or
immunosuppressive drugs.
A great gift to be able to give another dog,
I’m very proud of my Macy.
Resource centre
targeted by thieves
• By Emily Moorhouse
ROWLEY RESOURCE Centre
members are asking the
community to keep an eye out for
electrical tools stolen from their
garden shed.
The stolen items include a
Ryobi electric lawnmower, an
electric weed trimmer, an electric
leaf blower and an electric power
drill.
The shed at 89 Rowley Ave was
broken into about three weeks
ago by someone cutting the bolt
on the padlock. The centre has
since had two new padlocks put
on the shed.
Centre director
Evelyn Kenneally
said it was
extremely disappointing
that
someone would
do something like
Evelyn
Kenneally
this, especially
to a community
centre.
“I just feel a bit
disappointed, it’s just happening
all over the place with people
coming in and stealing stuff, just
disappointed really.”
Kenneally said the centre had
never been targeted by thieves
before, but she knows there are
things like this happening around
the city.
“That somebody would come in
THEFT: The resource centre
and do that, knowing who we are
. . . for this community. I think
people are just struggling at the
moment.”
She said she has filed a police
report and is looking to get the
tools replaced if the centre can get
funding as well as have security
cameras installed in the future.
Kenneally posted on the centre’s
Facebook page and is urging
anyone who has seen or heard
anything in relation to the stolen
tools to come forward.
“These tools were essential
to keeping our property tidy
and (we) would really like them
returned with no questions
asked.”
All smiles as museum
hits fundraising target
• By Emily Moorhouse
IT WAS smiles all round from
volunteers at the New Brighton
Museum, knowing it can finally
purchase the building on Hardy
St.
The museum was granted
$105,000 from Lottery
Environment and Heritage,
which gives it enough to buy the
building with some leftover.
Museum secretary Peggy
Butterfield said volunteers were
“over the moon” to hear of the
lovely news.
“We were holding our breath
because we needed to find out by
the end of June. It’s good news
for the community for once,
instead of bad news,” Butterfield
said.
The leftover money will
go towards upgrades to both
the inside and outside of the
110-year-old building, with the
roof needing repairs and the
walls a revamp.
Butterfield said the museum
has already had engineers
come through and plans are in
place for upgrades, which the
volunteers will be fundraising
for to cover costs.
She said the idea of buying the
museum was first mentioned
two years ago, so it was great
SUCCESS: Secretary Peggy Butterfield outside the New
Brighton Museum.
to finally have that “sense of
security”.
“It takes away the worry of
having to worry about applying
for grants to pay the rent all the
time because that was getting
quite hard,” she said.
Museum president Tim
Baker had a new sign made as
a ‘thank you’ for the grants and
donations received.
The lottery grant was applied
for in February through a
professional fundraiser and
Butterfield said the money
should come through any day
now.
She said the museum received
more than 200 likes when she
shared the news on its Facebook
page.
“We don’t get a lot of visitors
but obviously we’ve got a big
following, people support us
because they want to see us keep
the museum, they don’t want to
see it go,” she said.
“It’s a big relief and I think
the community are right behind
us.”
Let’s use water
like we oughta
Charges are in the pipeline for households in Christchurch
and Banks Peninsula that regularly use large amounts of water.
Most households are using less than 700 litres of water a day and won’t be charged. Thanks for using water like you oughta!
A fairer way to manage our city’s water supply
We don’t charge ratepayers for water itself. We charge for delivering it -
through our network of pipes, pumps and other infrastructure.
When the district’s water use doubles over summer, the cost of
delivering water goes up significantly too. That increase in demand isn’t
spread evenly, with most of the increase due to a small proportion of
households.
When demand on our water supply network is at its peak we’re at risk of
not being able to supply enough water to properties, which could have
serious impacts on public health, and our ability to fight fires.
If everyone uses water like we oughta, we won’t need to spend as much
money expanding our water supply network, and it will also improve
the sustainability of our city’s water supply, which helps us achieve our
climate change goals.
Seek the leak and reduce your use
You can use our Water Reporter online tool to find out how much water
your household uses – visit ccc.govt.nz/WaterReporter
If your household is using a lot of water there might be a leak on
your property. You have time to find the leak and get it fixed.
Our website tells you about how to read your water meter, check for
leaks and reduce your water use*.
*Some properties’ water use is not recorded on the Water Reporter.
This includes: properties with a shared water
meter, properties that haven’t had their
water meter read due to inaccessibility
of the meter and properties without
Ford fans put their ponies on show
• By John Cosgrove
BETTING ON the odds of it not
raining in spite of the forecast,
Ross Stubley of Avondale,
chanced the weather by taking
his Ford Capri soft top out for a
run to a Ford event at Leithfield
on Sunday.
Stubley said like many, his
passion for Fords began at an
early age.
“I started off with Ford cars,
buying EB Falcons and Fairlanes,
and yeah, I’ve got a few now, I
just like the smoothness of them
and the way they look,” Stubley
said.
Nearly 200 Fords of all ages
and descriptions turned out
to show off their lines, curves,
engines and pedigrees.
Even though they were
built in Australia, England,
Germany and of course Detroit,
who could not fail to see the
passion in the eyes and voices of
the hundreds of owners and enthusiasts
who turned up for the
Ford day at the Waimak Classic
Cars museum.
There were Falcons old and
new, Fairlanes, Mustangs from
both centuries, Capris, Thunderbirds,
Cortinas, Escorts, Zephyrs
and more.
Chris Ash, 70, of Parklands,
turned up with his 2021 5-litre
Mach Mustang and said he
had grown up with early Ford
coupes.
“As a young fella I grew up
with all the earlier 39 Ford
coupes. I saw the earlier Mach
1 models back in the 70s and I
thought: ‘Gee look at that.’
“I thought I would never own
one until I got to a stage when I
can now afford one and thought
I might get an old one, but I
bought this 21 model Mustang
because Fords don’t break
down,” Ash said.
Greg Herrett of Linwood said
he has always just liked them.
“Over time, just the way
they’ve been performed, and enhanced,
and you can’t go wrong,”
he said.
Standing beside his immaculate
66 Mustang coupe, Rick
Paulsen, said he had been a Ford
fan all his life, owning many
over the years, from Escorts to
Mustangs.
“I’ve been a blue oval man
through and through for all my
life. My dad had Falcons, and the
reason I own a 66 coupe like this
one was because my uncle had one
when I was six years old, and I said
one day, I’m going to own one and
now I do,” Paulsen said.
Waimak Classic Cars spokesperson
Sally Lane said it was
an honour for them to host the
event.
“We were holding the
Ford event for all the Ford
lovers, drivers, dreamers and
owners.
“There was a very good vibe
there and we had the Mustang
club here as well as the hot rod
club turn up and compete for a
wide variety of prizes for best in
show,” she said.
Many Ford fans said they had
been born into Ford families.
Bruce McCormick of
Harewood, said he had followed
in his father’s footsteps and had a
lifelong passion for early Fords.
“My father had 46, 48 sedans,
and I have a 37 Ford V8 sedan
and a 37 club ute, I just love
them,” he said.
HOME & HEATING
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
Food writer Nadia Lim’s latest book YUM! is all about
helping parents show their children that food is fun, good
for them and part of family time. She is joined by cook
Annabel Inglis and paediatric dietitians Jenny Douglas and
Lisa Daniels to ensure the recipes pack in the goodness,
but are still appealing to children and their parents.
Carrot & Feijoa Mini Muffins
Makes 24
Subtly sweetened with just carrot and
fruit, these muffins are perfect for baby-led
weaning. They also make a great portable
snack for toddlers when you are out and
about. If it’s not feijoa season, you can use
one small (227g-235g) can of crushed pineapple
in natural juice (drain well first).
Ingredients
1¼ cups plain flour
3 tsp baking powder
½ tsp ground cinnamon or mixed spice
¾ cup finely grated carrot
1 free-range egg, lightly whisked (or 1
flax egg)
1 tsp vanilla essence or extract
¼ cup natural unsweetened yoghurt
¾ cup mashed ripe banana
75g butter, melted
¼ cup finely diced feijoa flesh
Directions
Preheat oven to 200degC. Grease a 24-hole
mini muffin tin.
Sift flour, baking powder and cinnamon/
mixed spice into a large bowl. Loosely toss
through grated carrot using your hands.
In another bowl, whisk egg, vanilla,
yoghurt, banana and butter until well
combined. Stir through feijoa.
Make a well in the dry ingredients and
add the wet ingredients. Stir until just
combined – do not overmix (to ensure a
lighter muffin).
Spoon batter into the muffin tin holes,
dividing equally – you can fill them to
the brim. Bake for 15-20 minutes until
light golden and muffins spring back
when lightly pressed in the centre. Leave
in the tin for 5 minutes before removing
and transferring to a wire rack to cool
completely.
Note: The muffins will keep in an airtight
container in the fridge for up to two days,
or in the freezer for up to two months.
Green Pikelets
Makes 14
These green pikelets are perfect as an
introduction to baby-led weaning with
their soft and mushy texture. Exposing
baby to bitter tastes, such as broccoli and
spinach, without the inclusion of sweeter
vegetables, encourages baby to become
accustomed to more savoury tastes.
Ingredients
½ large head broccoli
1 large handful spinach (tough stalk
removed) or baby spinach
3 free-range eggs
½ cup fortified baby rice cereal
olive oil, for frying
Directions
PHOTO: MATT QUEREE
AND ISABELLA HARREX
Cut broccoli into florets and discard the
stalk. Place in a food processor and blitz
until very finely chopped. You need 1 cup
for this recipe; measure to check you have
the correct amount and return to the food
processor. Add spinach, eggs and baby rice
and process until smooth.
Heat a drizzle of oil in a large cast-iron or
non-stick fry pan on a medium heat.
Cook pikelets in two batches. Add
tablespoons of mixture to the pan and
cook for 2-3 minutes on one side, before
using a fish slice to carefully flip over and
cook on the other side, until set and lightly
browned. Add a little more oil between
batches as needed. Serve warm or cold.
Tip: These will keep for 1-2 days in a
sealed container in the fridge. Alternatively,
you can freeze by storing in a sealed
container or ziplock bag, separating
pikelets between layers of baking paper to
prevent them sticking together.
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping Cantabrians
get the balance right when it comes to
choosing the perfect heat pump or air
conditioning system for their home or office
since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home
both in Winter and Summer. This can be
achieved by using ducted systems or multi
systems and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community
Services Card, a SuperGold combo card or
who live in a low-income area as determined
by deciles 8-10 on the New Zealand
Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals,
it’s time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
What makes a Great Heat
Transfer System?
There are a number of
Heat Transfer systems on
the market. Smooth-Air
ventilation specialists
offer a range of HTU
Heat Transfer Units
with carefully selected
components to optimise
the system:
They use insulated duct
to transfer the heated air
with as little heat loss as
possible. The fan moves
sufficient air for the
distance and number of
rooms, without being noisy. The diffusers
send the heat to the floor, not to skim the
across the ceilings. All components are
good quality - designed to operate for years
without problems.
Smooth-Air’s HTUs come in a range
of options: One to four rooms, with or
without thermostat and with a choice
of grilles and diffusers. HTUs improve
energy efficiency in your house, as you are
using excess heat. They have low power
consumption - only 80watts for the three
room system. Circulating air through the
house also reduces the risk of damp.
You can also choose the HTU version
with downjet diffusers, which throw the
warm air downwards to the floor. These
downjet diffusers can also be adjusted to
regulate which room receives the most
warm air.
An average size living room requires 2-4
kw of heating, yet appliances such as log
burners generate heat in the region of 10
-20kw. This leaves an excess of 8 -16kw of
heat which sits at high level in the heated
room, usually above door level.
Heat transfer units work best where very
hot air has ‘stratified’ into a layer near the
ceiling. So heat pumps, which circulate
warm air around the room with no
layering, are not suitable as a heat source
by themselves. However, if you have both
log burner and a heat pump, heat transfer
systems with thermostat can work very
well: The heat pump stops operating once
the heat from the fire has heated the room,
and the heat transfer kicks in above this
point, once there is a layer of hot air at the
ceiling.
Contact Smooth-Air on 0800 SMOOTH
(0800 766 684) to ask how they can help
you with your Heat Transfer, as well as any
other ventilation requirements.
