Midwinter fun
Ashburton Public Library is
helping keep kids entertained
during these winter school
holidays by running their
Winter Wonder programme
from July 11 to 22.
The first workshop was a
craft session where children
got to make cardboard
constellations that mimicked
starlight when used with a
torch in the dark. More than 18
children attended alongside
their caregivers.
Activities are designed to be
fun for the whole family, with
family movies and board games
on hire, and aseries of
interactive craft workshops to
help keep those little brains
buzzing.
Ashburton Public Library
children’s librarian Jonathan
Nixon said they are hoping to
reschedule the ‘reach for the
stars’ astronomy observation
activity at the Ashburton
College for next week.
It was originally planned for
the last Monday, but was
cancelled due to cloudy skies.
There is no limit to how many
children can partake in the
activities, and families are
encouraged to attend if they
can.
Lifeguards wanted
Ashburton District Council is
looking for more lifeguards and
other staff to join its stateoftheart
indoor sports facility,
the EA Networks Centre.
Council community services
group manager Steve Fabish
says there’s avariety of roles,
fulltime and parttime,
working across the pools,
stadium and gym areas.
“Lifeguards are an essential
part of our business and at our
sports centre they are also
involved in looking after the
stadium and customer services.
In return, they learn some
pretty useful skills that will
stick with them for life.
“These roles are agreat way
for young people to try working
in the sport and recreation
industry, and they also offer
flexible hours for other people,
like working mums or older
people wanting to work parttime.”
Hannah O’Reilly was a
lifeguard for ayear while she
was at Ashburton College and
said the afterschool job taught
her many skills, including first
aid.
“I became really good at
talking to the public as it was an
important part of my job, as
well as advocating about water
safety. Ican do small talk, as
well as be authoritative but in a
polite and professional tone.”
Hannah is currently studying
to be agraphic designer at
Massey University.
“I enjoyed the community
that was at the EA Networks
Centre because there were so
many different people that you
get to talk with and see on a
shift. The people skills Igained
help me on adaily basis.”
Mr Fabish said Hannah was
typical of the many young
people who had worked at the
recreation centre over the
years, though some stayed on
and progressed to managing
roles.
