The electionwill be heldby postal votewith voting papers and information aboutthe candidates arriving in mailboxesfrom September 16. Voting closes onSaturday, October 8. MidCanterburyvoters will electamayor,nine district councillors, five Methven Community Board members and six Braided Rivers Community Trust (formerly Ashburton LicensingTrust) members. In the leaduptothe elections, councilwill hold a free candidateinformation evening to help potential candidates learnmore about the election process andwhat is involvedrepresenting their community. AshburtonDistrictCouncil chiefexecutive Hamish Riachsaid now is the time to think of anyonewho would be agood representativefor the communityonthe council, and encouragethem to consider standing for election The candidate information eveningwillbeheld on July 19 at AshburtonDistrict Council Chambers, 137 Havelock Street, Ashburton, from 5.30pm. Mr Riachsaid to garner interest in the electionsthis year, therewas apromotional campaignfeaturing some wellknown people from the district, and their photographs were takenat various spots aroundthe district. “Howbetter to encourage peopletovote, thanto highlight our own people and some of the thingsthat are important to our district.” Mr Riachsaidnone of the people featuredinthe campaignwere standingfor a position themselves. “Buttheyare keentolend their support to this important message, and highlight issues suchas supporting thelocal economy, ruralcommunities, opportunities for young people and lookingafterour environment.” Alongsidethe campaign, thecouncil has alsolaunched anew website for the election period voteashburton.nz with information for voters andcandidates. Laterphases of the campaign will encourage residents to vote, with staff at the AshburtonPublic Library readyto help people change theirdetails online, or register as newvoters. “Enrolmentpacksare hitting mailboxes now,so please check your detailsare uptodate or if you haven’t receivedone, then you should make sureyou’re enrolled.” NEWS Ashburton Courier, July 14, 2022 33 Farmer knowledge Farmersacrossthecountryare beingaskedtogobacktoschool as apartofaneweducational programme forchildrencalled FarmerTime.The initiative, which originatesfrom theUK, linksfarmers withprimary and intermediateschoolchildren through virtualclassroom sessions using video call technology. Studentschat live withtheir matchedfarmer, gaining an understanding of farming acrossthe seasons and providingrealworld examples of whatthey’relearning during theschool year.Kit Arkwright, CEOofBeef+Lamb Inc,which is drivingthe initiative,is keen to seefood producers from all sectors getinvolved. Rain,sea and rivers are eroding land.The human response is fear,awe, andan urgentdesire to help.After emergency rescue and evacuationcentre comfortwe willapplaudthe kindness of strangers, the bravery and preparation of civil defence, police, fire andambulance personnel. Butwhat arethe longer term responses? Thishappened earlier this year. Willithappen again? Climate change combined withhuman attraction to rivers andthe coast as placestoliveand work makesitlikely. When thousandsofhomes and livelihoods are affectedwho takes thelead in making changes forasafer more sustainable future forevery community,every suburb,every village? ThisisnotjustanAustralian problem; residents in many coastal areas in New Zealand and around theworld are also askingthesequestions. Questions of safety, insurance, house and landvalue, questions about the futurefor our communities. We make our personal choices forhome making, eating, travelling, celebrating, within aglobaleconomic system so inextricablyweshare responsibility for climate change.Someofussuffer more of the costs of climatechange. Inequality in the distributionof wealth sitsalongside injustice. Our economic system seems to be predicated on growth onthe idea thatIfwekeep getting more andbigger we willsolve allour problems. It islargely led by politiciansand corporations whomay have altruistic humanitarian principlesbut areworking in a webwherepowerand profit are incredibly strongdrivers. Perhaps we canhelpthem set goals that we agree withand build towards the kind of future we wanttolivein. Formethatisafuture where we respect the earth, ourhome, and we respectone another. Where we recognise that resources are not unlimited so we share them as justlyaswe can. Where every child born has cleanwater,good care,a homeinahealthy community andopportunitiestodelight in education and work as they grow. This fitsmyChristian belief that God cares deeplyfor agoodearthand all earth’s peopleand creatures,and God callsustotakepart in caring for earth and building healthy communities.
