Want the Best Ceiling Fan for

Home or Other Space? Learn More

Here!

Ceiling fans are essential cooling equipment. They keep home spaces such as the bedroom, living

room, and dining area comfortable and relaxing at the right temperature.

Also, in a business establishment, ceiling fans facilitate a refreshing and inviting atmosphere

whether it is for the customers in the receiving area or for the guest in the Manager’s office.

Since the market offers numerous brands of ceiling fans with varying specifications, buyers may

find it challenging to choose which option to purchase.

CBK Hardware is among the premier distributor of various brands of ceiling fans that are costefficient

and energy-saving.

Since 1920, this home and office improvement specialist based in Manila has expanded and become

the largest hardware supplier in the country for commercial, retail, residential, and industrial

projects.

8 Important Factors to Consider

When Buying High-Quality Ceiling

Fans

CBK Hardware offers many global brands among them are Hunter and Westinghouse,

who are known for their contemporary design and elegant ceiling fans. Their wide

range of ceiling fans and cooling machines for home and commercial establishments

are best-selling because of the following factors:

1. Size

Determine the correct ceiling fan size for a room is always important and consider the

living space or commercial space area and its ceiling’s height.

8

CBK Hardware advises shoppers to ensure that the ceiling’s height is at least 8 feet

high from the ground or the floor to the ceiling, and the wall-to-blade edge distance

should be about 2 feet high.

On selecting the right ceiling fan for a room, consider the perfect blade size of the

ceiling fan to increase air-moving capacity inside a room. Here are CBK Hardware’s

recommended ceiling fan blade sizes per room area:

a) Room Size: Up to 12 square meters

Recommended Ceiling Fan Blade Size: 76 to 90 centimeters

b) Room Size: Up to 15 square meters

Recommended Ceiling Fan Blade Size: 105 centimeters

c) Room Size: Up to 20 square meters

Recommended Ceiling Fan Blade Size: 112 to 122 centimeters

d) Room Size: From 25 to 30 square meters

Recommended Ceiling Fan Blade Size: More than 132 centimeters

e) Room Size: More than 30 square meters

Recommended Ceiling Fan Blade Size: More than one ceiling fan is

recommended

The petite and decorative Westinghouse Black Turbo Swirl 30-Inch Ceiling

2. Style

Getting the right ceiling fan for

home and for office can be hard

as there are a lot of styles of ceiling

fan available. However, always

remember to choose the ceiling

fan that will match one’s home

decorations or office style.

CBK Hardware’s ceiling fans are available in a different style. Their

colors can complement any living space or workspace. Also, some

ceiling fans with lights are ideal for small rooms that are well-lighted.

The airy and bright Westinghouse 78145 6-Blade 30-Inch Turbo Swirl

Ceiling Fan with white finish features curvy white blades, an integrated

light fixture, and opal-frosted glass. This chic ceiling fan adds casual

style and comfort to any room.

3. Type

There are two kinds of ceiling fans:

Hugger or standard. Hugger ceiling

fans are flush-mounted ceiling fans that

do not have a conventional downward

rod hanging from the ceiling while, the

standard type of ceiling fans is typically

extended with a down rod which allows

them to be mounted on flat or sloped

ceiling.

CBK Hardware sells both standard and hugger ceiling fan types. Its standard ceiling fans

feature down rods that are extendable to up to 3 feet high and perfect for living spaces or

workspaces with high ceilings.

Ensure the rooms meet the minimum floor-to-ceiling distance of 8 feet high for this choice like

this Westinghouse 78016 Comet 5-Blade 52-Inch Ceiling Fan is an example of the standard

type.

12

It has a down rod and matte black hue. On the other hand, hugger

ceiling fans do not include a down rod. CBK Hardware recommends

this choice for rooms with low ceilings or small.

The Hunter Low-Profile 5-Blade

52-Inch Ceiling Fan with Light

and Antique Pewter finish is

specially designed for low-ceiling

operations and powerful cooling

with its Whisperwind Motor.

4. Light

Most ceiling fans come with light fixtures

and help illuminate the rooms well. At

CBK Hardware there are two different

light kits: a ceiling fan that allows dim

light with the dome-type or a close glass

light kit. While the other type of light kitthe

open down-type light is a ceiling fan

that facilitates brighter lights in a room.

This one is best-selling because the

choice of wattage for this lighting kit is

unlimited since it is open-type.

Some examples of ceiling fans

with light fixtures available at

CBK Hardware are the Hunter

Augusta 5-Blade 52-Inch Ceiling

Fan with Antique Pewter finish

and the Westinghouse Turbo

Swirl 6-Blade 30 Oil Rubbed

Bronze Ceiling Fan.

Have a wonderful time shopping for the best

ceiling fan to cool and beautify the home or

office space!

Why ceiling fans are essential in

the Philippines

Ceiling fans are a staple in many homes in

the Philippines. They are often used to cool

a room down in the summer, and to circulate

warm air in the cooler seasons. Ceiling fans

come in a variety of sizes and can be installed

in almost any room in your home. There are

several reasons why you should consider

adding a ceiling fan to your home.

• Ceiling fans are a great way to save energy

and keep your home cool

• Ceiling fans circulate air, which helps to

improve your home’s air quality

• Ceiling fans can help you to stay comfortable

in your home, even on the hottest days

• Ceiling fans are a great way to add style

and personality to your home

Did you Know: Ceiling fan

rotation can be changed during

cooler seasons

As ceiling fans are helpful for regulating a

room’s temperature, it can also warm and cool

the home by simply changing the rotational

direction of the fan’s blades. In warm weather,

if you want to feel the circulation of air that

provides cooling and evaporative breeze,

adjust the fan setting to counterclockwise

rotation. During cooler seasons, warm

the room by setting the fan on a clockwise

rotation and pushing hot air that has risen to

the ceiling down and recirculating it around

the room.

Types of ceiling fans

There are various types of ceiling fans on

the market. The Hunter Fan Company, for

instance, offers five types of ceiling fans: the

Original Ceiling Fan, the Hampton Bay Ceiling

Fan, the Signature Edition Ceiling Fan, the

Craftsman Ceiling Fan, and the Traditional

Ceiling Fan.

The Original Ceiling Fan is perhaps the most

basic type of fan. It has a simple design and

is usually less expensive than other types

of fans. The Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan is

designed for larger rooms and typically has

more blades than other types of fans. The

Signature Edition Ceiling Fan is a high-end

fan that features a unique design and often

comes with remote control. The Craftsman

Ceiling Fan is also designed for larger rooms

and has a more rustic look than other types

of fans.

How to get the right size of

ceiling fan for your space

When it comes to ceiling fans in the Philippines,

size does matter. Choosing the wrong size of

fan can make your home uncomfortable and

could even be dangerous. Here are a few tips

on how to get the size of the ceiling fan for

your space:

• Determine the square footage of the

room. You can do this by multiplying the

length of the room by the width of the room.

Once you have that number, you can use a

fan sizing chart to find the recommended fan

size for your space.

• Keep in mind that you want to leave

at least 18 inches of clearance between the

fan and any object nearby, like furniture or

windows. Also, make sure that the blades of

the fan will clear any obstacles in the room,

like light fixtures or beams.

• Finally, consider how much noise you

want your fan to make.

How to install a ceiling fan

When it’s time to install a ceiling fan, there are

a few basic steps that you need to follow, and

you need to do it properly. The most important

part of the installation is to make the fan attach

and secure to the ceiling joists or brackets. If

not installed properly, the fan could wobble or

fall, which could cause serious injury.

The first step is to measure the distance from

the floor to the ceiling and mark the spot where

you want to install the fan. You’ll also need to

measure how far apart the ceiling joists are

and mark those spots as well. Then, use a

drill bit that’s slightly smaller than the screws

that came with your fan to make pilot holes in

each of those spots.

About CBK Hardware

For over one hundred years, a family’s surname has become synonymous with the country’s

biggest hardware supply company. Co Ban Kiat Hardware Incorporated of the Cobankiat family

has a regular client network of more than 1,500 industrial organizations, 1,600 traditional

community hardware stores, and 584 home building specialty chains of stores across Luzon

Visayas and Mindanao. This ever-growing conglomerate traces its humble roots to Manila

Chinatown, as a pioneer enterprise started by the family’s patriarch, Mr. Cobankiat, in 1920.

Despite the ruins of World War II, the business got back to its feet in 1948, rebuilding a storefront

from the very same spot where it was known for three decades.

While the Filipinos continued to rebuild their lives post-war, CBK Hardware saw the opportunity

to introduce the retail concept once unheard of in the hardware industry. Cobankiat Hardware

brought the first DIY business in Asia. The Hardware Workshop Store is the fruit of this endeavor.

CBK Hardware further cemented its legendary distribution channel with the creation of Coby’

Design Center in Edsa Shangri La in 1996, a specialty store that caters to the discriminating taste

of modern Filipinos.

In 1997, Mr. Johnny Cobankiat, the 4th generation Cobankiat leader, set another milestone for

the company when he brought the franchise of Ace Hardware USA to the Philippines and signed

up CBK Hardware as one of its major suppliers. This further expanded into delivering quality

world-class products nearer to families of Filipino overseas workers in the countryside.

A century’s excellence can quickly pass, and guided by the vision to be the largest network

supplier of the biggest global brands in the hardware industry, CBK Hardware resolves to source

the best products to supply its customers anytime and every time.

People Who Show

Entrepreneurship &

Engineering Are Linked

48

Some of the most successful people

(and richest) in the world are trained

engineers. It shows engineers are

leading the charge when it comes to

pushing the world towards new opportunities.

It’s easy to assume that companies and

boardrooms are all filled with corporate types

putting money above all else. That’s not always

the case, especially in many computing and

technology industries. The people at the

top often started at the bottom or created

something for themselves.

Here are three people in particular that

show the link between entrepreneurship and

engineering.

Elon Musk

Love him or hate him, Elon Musk is one of

the most visionary minds in the world today.

While some people know him for Tesla, or his

forever changing stance on cryptocurrency

that has everyone rushing for the Dogecoin

and Ethereum exchange on his word, he’s also

a trained engineer.

Musk isn’t just about cars and space travel. His

mind seemingly wants to tackle some of the

great issues of the day. He’s also been involved

in hyperloop and his

His love of technology has seen him found

SpaceX - to help the human race travel to space

as easily as they’d take a holiday.

Ginni Rometty

Better known as the CEO of IBM, Ginny

Rometty holds a degree in Computer Science

& Electrical Engineering. She initially joined

IBM as an entry-level systems engineer and

worked her way through a variety of positions

in the company, all the way through to CEO.

She has also successfully shepherded the

company away from traditional systems and

towards data analytics and cloud services,

halting a decline that had lasted 21 quarters.

Jeff Bezos

After studying electrical engineering at

Princeton, Bezos began selling books from his

garage and built Amazon from the ground up

into the largest online retailer in the world.

Bezos recently stepped down from Amazon,

preferring to concentrating on his other

interests and recently joined the billionaire

space race after his successful flight on New

Shephard.

Sundar Pichai

As a computer engineer, Pichai has always

been known for his innovative ideas. He

successfully developed Google toolbars for

Firefox and Explorer before developing the

Chrome browser, which is not the most used

in the world.

Pichai held a number of product positions at

Google before being named as CEO in the

company’s 2015 restructuring.

Satya Nadella

After studying at Manipal Institute of Technology,

Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992. He was one

of the leading voices in suggesting that cloud

computing was the way forward. He moved

up through the company through various R&D

roles until he was named Microsoft’s CEO in

2015.

Conclusion

It’s always fascinating to find out what famous

people, entrepreneurs and politicians studied

at school. Often it will surprise you. However, it

does seem that an aptitude for engineering is

often a stepping stone to success in business

too. The world moves on technological and

scientific advancement and those people who

combine the knowledge and drive it will find

themselves creating some very exiting things

indeed.

and far beyond, it’s vital to establish what type

of engineer you are as quickly as possible.

With a website, you can make this possible,

but what else should you include?

Fast Load Times

No one wants to sit around and wait for a

website to load. Studies have shown that the

average person will wait just three seconds

before clicking away. Therefore, you must

ensure your website is as quick to load as

possible, keeping visitor’s attention.

However, website speeds can be tricky. The

more images and information, the slower the

site will be overall. To combat this, you’ll need

to look into the best software advancements

that will maintain your website speeds and

maintain interest.

A Piece Of Your Mind

It’s not enough to simply list your services and

hope that people will get in touch. You need to

show visitors that you know what you’re talking

about. As engineering is more of a specialist

subject compared to other businesses and

industries, proving your authority is a must.

Blog posts and content, such as videos or

infographics, are a superb way to engage

visitors and show them you know what you are

talking about. Besides this, it’s also the best

52

way to drive traffic and attract new clients without spending a fortune on marketing. Because

you have all of this knowledge and insights already, you’re essentially marketing our business

for free.

A Strong Portfolio

You also cannot rely on a shiny, attractive website to convince visitors to seek your business.

With engineering being such a competitive industry, you must show evidence that you have

enough experience to be trusted with potential projects.

This is why a portfolio of your past projects is so important. A portfolio can act as a visual

resume, backing up any claims you make about success with previous clients and giving

potential clients an idea of what to expect from you. You can put as many or as few examples

as you like, but it’s always advised to select the projects you are most proud of alongside those

that are the most successful.

Automatically Updated Information

Creating a website that also acts as a hub for engineering information could also benefit

you, especially when you’re trying to stand out from the crowd. There are plenty of options to

consider, but it’s important to choose the information that visitors would be interested in.

Depending on the type of engineering you specialize in, using aggregators to highlight the

latest developments or keeping up to date with the stock marketing using alternatives to Yahoo

Finance API can add essential value to your site, giving you the edge that others neglect.

Engineering the Best Website

A good website is not built overnight. However, if you have experience in software engineering,

you can design and maintain a dependable and attractive website all by yourself. If your

engineering tablets lie elsewhere, get in touch with a professional web developer to ensure

your site stands out.

Do You Have the Mind of

an Engineer

If you are interested in design, math, or

science, then engineering is a great career

path to take. Engineering involves using the

principles of these subjects to solve problems

for people everywhere.

The field of engineering has many sub-fields

that are geared towards different styles and

levels of education. Becoming an engineer

requires dedication and hard work but it can be

very rewarding! Here are some signs that might

indicate you should become an engineer.

You are Analytical

An engineer is responsible for the safe operation

of many critical physical structures.

Engineers need to be able to work on their own,

but also as part of a team. Engineers are often

asked to solve problems that don’t have an

obvious solution.

They must come up with creative solutions

using limited resources and timeframes.

A typical day for an engineer can be very

different depending on the project they are

working on. Engineers must also be prepared

to work evenings and weekends when

necessary in some cases.

You are Constantly Thinking

About the Future

If you want to be part of something that will

change the world then engineering is uniquely

poised to do just that. Engineering is all about

creativity and common sense skills anyone

can learn with some hard work.

If the idea of being on the cutting edge of

technology and helping to create things that

will enhance or better the lives of people

56

appeals to you, then engineering is your

calling.

The engineers who build the next generation

of robots are often inspired by nature.

These scientists borrow ideas from animals

to design machines that can walk, swim,

and fly-just like their natural counterparts! If

you’re interested in robotics or biology, then

engineering might be your calling.

You Love Math and Physics

If your favorite classes in school were physics

or maths then you may love being an engineer.

These subjects are the most closely related

to engineering and they’re also among the

hardest to master.

That’s because they teach skills that apply

directly to solving real-world problems. But

even if you don’t remember your high school

science textbook too well (or at all), there is no

reason not to give an engineering career a try!

Success as an engineer depends on

understanding concepts rather than

memorizing formulas. So if your favorite

subject was math or physics, then you’re

already partway to becoming an engineer.

However, even beyond a love of physics and

math if you enjoy finding how machinery such

as a swing jib crane, forklift, or even bulldozers

work then you have the mind of an engineer.

Start Your Career

If you have been thinking that you have what it

takes to be an engineer but you are not entirely

certain then you should carefully consider the

tips that have been given here. If you find

that you are in fact interested in engineering

then talk with a career coach or those who are

already in the field to find out more about this

exciting career.

What Exactly Does A

Mechanical Contractor Do?

Have you ever looked at a recent

building and wondered who all

participated in its construction?

Was it a grocery store, an office

or a home? In most cases, it is likely to

be the maximum effort of a mechanical

contractor. Yes, mechanical contractors

are the trailblazer of every construction

project that has ever been worked on.

From hotels to hospitals and universities

to skyscrapers, the mechanical contractor

is involved in the construction process

until the end.

In this article, we will comprehensively

discuss the functions of a mechanical

contractor in a construction project. By

the end of this article, you will be wellversed

with their profession. So if you

ever choose to become a mechanical

contractor shortly, you know where to

begin from. But don’t forget to look at this

article at GoBridgit with all the information

relating to the same.

What Is A Mechanical

Contractor?

Mechanical contractors handle each

mechanical project of an organization.

They are the ones who take responsibility

for most of the essential technical and

installation works. From piping, heating

or cooling systems, plumbing, and

refrigeration, mechanical contractors

look after everything. A few of these

contractors may deliver expertise on a

construction project during production

and installation. On the contrary, many

may provide the work during the ongoing

maintenance and building repair cycle.

60

As such, a mechanical contractor can

come in handy for several reasons in the

construction industry. That is why if you

want to become a mechanical contractor,

you can expect to deal with the critical

aspects of the same.

Elements Of Mechanical

Construction

Mechanical construction is a vast and

impressive industry. The projects here

are available in diverse shapes and

sizes. Whether you want to construct

a small residential home or a largescale

commercial building, mechanical

contractors can help with all of them.

Most people generally have a hard time

figuring out which mechanical contractor

to scout for. As such, you can refer to this.

1. Refrigeration Systems

Any systems that enable the artificial

cooling of a specific place or a system,

usually either transporting the heat around

or moving it from one location to another.

2. Electrical Systems

A series of electrical components that

apply electrical power, distribute and

supply them contains overhead and

underground lines, transformers poles

and other equipment.

3. HVAC Systems

The HVAC system contains cooling air

conditioning equipment, ventilation and

heating.

4. Plumbing

Plumbing contains fittings, pipes and

tanks. It may also avail other significant

elements that control water supply,

building sanitation and heating.

Duties Of A Mechanical

Contractor

During most construction projects,

mechanical contractors are engaged

in trade coordination and creating

a significant collaboration for the

construction project’s success. In

addition, mechanical contractors are

required to cater to stringent timings and

budget obligations. As a result, they must

complete all the mechanical elements

timely and within the specified budget

without delays in trade. Mechanical

contractors are also involved in the

designing of mechanical parts and

installing them on the installation site.

As a result, they frequently depend on

VDC/DIM solutions. This allows teams to

create a structure before they construct

a building virtually. With such techniques,

mechanical contractors can get hold of

any design issues or clashes right on

time. When the work is delivered, it helps

prevent any costly rework that may later

inconvenience the team. Their day-to-day

responsibilities may include administering

staff, delegating tasks to various team

members, monitoring resources and

determining the full scope of electrical

maintenance and construction. You

must also note that many mechanical

contractors offer self-performance while

others subcontract work to third-party

companies. Such a thing requires you

to put additional scheduling on the other

trades.

Salary Of A Mechanical

Contractor

Some sources suggest that the average

salary of a mechanical contractor ranges

from nearly $40,000 per year for a project

manager to $89,443 per year for a service

manager. As these numbers keep fluctuating

constantly, it is essential to be up to date with

the salary ranges on various sites.

Job Market Outlook For

Mechanical Construction

In 2007 when the recession hit, some

industries were affected more severely than

the construction business. This made them

slip into a decline and come back in good

health later. Sources suggest that 95%

of contractors today face problems while

looking for skilled workers. Although this

has created a significant challenge for the

construction business, it also introduces a

promising job outlook for budding workers.

As a result, these contractors are high on

demand and growing at exponential rates.

Statistics suggest that many mechanical

specialties, mainely plumbing and HVAC, will

experience quicker employment rates than

other industries from 2018-2028.

Mechanical Contractor Software

Leading contractors have been compelled

to implement a construction management

platform with the complicated nature of

mechanical construction. These come at their

rescue for efficient management of various

construction projects. This is especially

beneficial for mechanical contractors and

helps them in a varied number of ways.

1. It helps take a peek into upgraded

information from anywhere and everywhere.

2. It assists in streamlining field-to-office

communication and lets employees report

any on sight problems within seconds.

3. It also helps track labour production and

fosters the efficient management of teams

and materials.

How To Become A Mechanical

Contractor?

Many people aim at becoming mechanical

contractors. Honestly, it takes far more than

it looks to demand. Mechanical contractors

need the completion of both written and

practical examinations. In addition, in

specific countries such as the United States,

mechanical contractors must acquire a proper

license to operate their expertise.

In many cases, you will also observe that the

candidate finishes a degree in a specific area

of mechanical knowledge. For this purpose,

many companies also outstretch their support

via apprenticeship and job training. If you

want to become a contractor, you must have

excellent communication and management

skills. Also, the ability to manage staff

seamlessly and create good relations with

customers is an inevitable task.

The Bottom Line

Mechanical contractors are essential to carry

out many significant constriction activities.

Without their contribution, the crux of many

construction activities will remain undone.

So the next time you want to know about

mechanical contractors, you can visit this

article all over again.

Digital Transformation for

Manufacturing & Industrial

Companies

68

Companies responding to digital

disruption inevitably focus on speed

first. They make changes quickly

where it matters most—launching

apps, forming agile squads, deploying

new analytics, and testing innovative digital

business models. The primary objective is to

stay one step ahead of the change. Yet after

an initial phase of success, these promising

digital transformation initiatives too often lose

momentum. On the way to scale and lasting

impact, they run aground on legacy issues

such as aging technology infrastructure,

mismatched operating models, old ways of

working, or cultures resistant to change. This

shows up in our annual survey of more than

1,200 business leaders around the world.

Three years ago, when we asked

respondents to prioritize what it takes to

establish digital leadership, their answers

boiled down to making faster decisions and

executing quickly to create differentiated

offerings. Today, there is a growing realization

that speed on its own isn’t enough. While

moving quickly to differentiate remains

essential, capturing the full value of digital

transformation involves scaling a company’s

best initiatives across the organization

for broad impact. That typically requires

retooling the technology architecture while

also building digital fluency and capabilities

throughout the organization.

The advantage that digital disrupters have

over incumbent companies is that they were

built for purpose. Not only is their underlying

tech infrastructure tailored specifically to

their digital ambition but so is the way they

operate, how they make decisions, and the

way they use technology in their everyday

approach to business.

Competing in a digital world ultimately

means transforming both hard capabilities

(the tech stack) and soft capabilities (the

operating model) to create a business

environment in which change can take

root at scale and strategy is fully enabled

by digital technology. Yet that presents

a fundamental risk: How do you avoid

disrupting your business just when you can

least afford it?

Leadership teams undertaking digital

transformation are starting to figure that

out. Companies have enough experience

at this point that they are seeing creative

ways to build new bridges to the future

without creating traffic jams in the legacy

business. Looking at the most effective

efforts, we’ve identified four patterns of

digital transformation that allow companies

to rebuild and compete at the same time.

1. Laying down the digital

foundations

The first pattern involves companies that

are under pressure to develop new digital

capabilities and are essentially starting from

scratch. The threat is clear and evolving

steadily but has yet to produce a burning

platform for change. Many industrial

companies find themselves in this situation.

Large manufacturers, for instance, have

long used technologies such as robotics

to automate and optimize the production

process. But the industrial application of

data and analytics is evolving into a new

basis of competition. Companies are using

advanced analytics and predictive models

to improve everything from supply chain

management to maintenance and service.

Implementing a new digital infrastructure

requires an entirely new set of foundational

capabilities, particularly around sensors

and analytics used to collect and interpret

relevant information across the company.

69

N E W S

S T O R I E S

2. Integrating a fragmented

digital landscape

Companies that fall into this next pattern suffer

from digital fragmentation—that is, they have

no shortage of digital projects bubbling up

across the company, but they lack the ability

to prioritize the most promising initiatives and

scale them across the organization.

This is common among global consumer

goods companies with legacy IT systems

that vary from one geography or function

to another. While they may be doing lots of

innovative things locally to serve customers,

mismatched technology makes it difficult for

the entire company to learn from those ideas

and deploy them.

3. Digital transformation front to

back

The third pattern also confronts the legacy

conundrum in the core business, but the

problem in this case is different. Rather

than a fragmented IT architecture, these

companies have years of accumulated

systems that were built on top of each other

as the business evolved. The resulting tangle

of tech infrastructure ends up being inefficient

and inflexible, slowing down the company’s

reaction time.

4. Launching a new digital

attacker

Sometimes, the magnitude and pace of

disruption in an industry require more change

than an incumbent company can support.

Its size, complexity, or resistance to change

might prevent it from moving fast enough to

remain competitive. Increasingly, the answer

is to launch an entirely new business to

attack opportunities that the core business

cannot. This can be a bold bet that involves

substantial risk. But it’s probably no riskier

than hunkering down behind the moat and

hoping that incremental improvement will be

enough to fend off insurgent competitors.

A digital attacker is both an offensive

and a defensive bet. On offense, it allows

companies to enter a new market with a

tailored, lightweight solution that is free of

legacy baggage. On defense, it gives the

company a fresh value proposition to attract

new customers within its existing market—for

instance, aiming at millennials, students, and

young professionals to build the customer

base of the future.

Finding your way to boldness

These four patterns, of course, can’t capture

the myriad risks and challenges companies

face as they contemplate how best to transform

themselves to compete in a digital world.

They are meant as broad archetypes that

highlight the interplay of practical realities that

any transformation journey entails, especially

during a time of accelerated disruption. They

encourage corporate leaders to consider two

critical factors.

• What is the nature and immediacy of the

digital disruption our industry is likely to face?

• What must change within our technology

stack and operating model to enable the

company to move fast enough to keep pace?

We find that there’s a tendency to

underestimate on both scores: Disruption is

probably happening faster than you think,

and the challenge of transforming a company

to remain competitive is probably harder than

you expect. That tendency too often leads

to incrementalism or a strategy of launching

small digital initiatives that ultimately fail to

move the needle.

The companies that fall into our four patterns

recognize that any successful digital

transformation depends on a balancing act—

namely, the ability to scale meaningful change

without disrupting the core. Every company

finds its own path, but all winning digital

transformations share one thing in common:

a willingness to be bold.

Ryan Martin, Principal Analyst, ABI Research said: “Importantly, research findings

indicate a preference for deploying private fully-owned and operated wireless

networks, with manufacturers favoring in-house management to allay security

concerns. It’s evident that respondents are not entirely committed to Wi-Fi/WLAN

and will consider latest generations of wireless technologies. As a result, 2020

is a critical year for networking suppliers to educate the market regarding the

merits of 4G/LTE and 5G.

“Based on this research we also observe a pan-industry need to quantify not

only the potential ROI of investing in private wireless, but also to clearly indicate

the cost of inaction – vendors need to make the case for investing in Industry 4.0

by the World Health Organization to be the

best option in pandemic settings, enhancing

access, distribution and compliance.

Eighty-five percent efficacy in preventing

severe COVID-19 disease and prevention of

COVID-19-related medical interventions will

potentially protect hundreds of millions of

people from serious and fatal outcomes of

COVID-19. It also offers the hope of helping

ease the huge burden placed on healthcare

systems and communities.”

In the study, the definition of severe COVID-19

disease included laboratory-confirmed

SARS-CoV-2 and one or more of the following:

signs consistent with severe systemic illness,

admission to an intensive care unit, respiratory

failure, shock, organ failure or death, among

other factors. Moderate COVID-19 disease

was defined as laboratory-confirmed SARS-

CoV-2 and one or more of the following:

the clinical trial staff and trial participants for

their invaluable contributions,” said Mathai

Mammen, M.D., Ph.D., Global Head, Janssen

Research & Development. “Changing the

trajectory of the pandemic will require mass

vaccination to create herd immunity, and

a single-dose regimen with fast onset of

protection and ease of delivery and storage

provides a potential solution to reaching as

many people as possible. The ability to avoid

hospitalizations and deaths would change the

game in combating the pandemic.”

Trial participants of the phase 3 ENSEMBLE

study continue to be followed for up to two

years for assessments of safety and efficacy.

Therefore, these data may be updated based

on ongoing analysis. The comprehensive

available data set will be submitted to a peerreviewed

journal in the coming weeks.

Phase 3 ENSEMBLE Study Safety

Data

The analysis included a concurrent review of

the available Phase 3 ENSEMBLE study safety

data by the Data and Safety Monitoring Board

(DSMB), an independent group of experts,

that did not report any significant safety

concerns relating to the vaccine. A review of

adverse events indicated that a single-dose of

Janssen’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate was

generally well-tolerated.

The safety profile was consistent with other

vaccine candidates using Janssen’s AdVac®

technology among more than 200,000 people

to date. Overall fever rates were 9% and Grade

3 fever 0.2%. Overall serious adverse events

(SAEs) reported were higher in participants

who received placebo as compared to the

active vaccine candidate. No anaphylaxis was

observed.

Janssen Vaccine Candidate Access

and Distribution

The Company is committed to bringing an

affordable COVID-19 vaccine on a not-forprofit

basis for emergency pandemic use,

pending regulatory authorizations.

In addition, the Janssen vaccine candidate is

compatible with standard vaccine distribution

channels. If authorized, Janssen’s single-dose

vaccine candidate is estimated to remain

stable for two years at -20°C (-4°F), at least

three months of which can be at temperatures

of 2-8°C (36°F–46°F). The Company will

ship the vaccine using the same cold chain

technologies it uses today to transport other

innovative medicines.

The Company intends to file for U.S. Emergency

Use Authorization (EUA) in early February

and expects to have product available to

ship immediately following authorization. It

expects to share more information on specifics

of deployment as authorizations are secured

and contracts are finalized. The Company’s

anticipated manufacturing timeline will enable

it to meet its 2021 supply commitments,

including those signed with governments and

global organizations.

Phase 3 ENSEMBLE Study Design

The Phase 3 ENSEMBLE study is a randomized,

double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial

designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy

of a single-dose vaccine versus placebo in

adults 18 years old and older.

The ENSEMBLE study was designed to

evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Janssen

vaccine candidate in protecting against both

moderate and severe COVID-19 disease, with

assessment of efficacy as of day 14 and as of

day 28 as co-primary endpoints.

Top 10 Tips on Conscious

Consumption and

Sustainable Living

We live in an era where consumers

are now more familiar with

sustainable living, saying no to

plastic, going vegan and making

sure to save our environment however we all

need to take a step and begin somewhere. If

you’re one that’s looking to make a change in

your lifestyle but aren’t sure where to begin,

Connect with Nature, a programme that

encourages youth to protect the environment

has embarked on an initiative to conscious

consumption.

It doesn’t cost you any extra or require any

additional time out of your schedules, you

can be in the comfort of your home, by your

office desk, in a classroom, at the beach or

even at the mall and make a difference. Our

environmental enthusiasts bring to you top 10

tips on conscious consumption and how they

choose to live a healthier and sustainable

lifestyle.

You do not need to make a big transformation

overnight or within a week, it takes time to get

used to a change. Our future environmental

ambassadors suggest starting with small

alterations in your lifestyle and gradually making

your way to bigger and better changes.

1. Reduce the Use of Single Use

Plastic

As you may know, one of the main problems

faced in the current generation is the use of

plastic. In a realistic world, there’s no way we

can completely banish out plastic overnight

however, as mentioned earlier starting small

can really make a big difference.

Doua Benhida, Founder of Zero Waste

Collective said, “I have become 100% zero

waste: from grocery shopping where I carry my

own reusable items to saying no to the straw

at restaurants & even carrying my containers

92

when I’m out and about for any to go, or

leftover food! I have become aware, more

importantly - being aware about the problem,

will help you in taking action to reduce your

plastic consumption and simply live a more

sustainable lifestyle”.

2. Cut Down on Meat

Consumption

It might come as a surprise to some, but

agriculture is known to be one of the biggest

contributors to climate change. Consuming

lesser meats can be another vital step to living

a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

Nadia AlKhatib, Environmental Activist and

Vegan Blogger suggests starting with what’s

on your plate. “Choosing greens over meats

and dairy can be a benefit not only to the

environment but also for your body. A vegan

diet is always recommended however, even

starting by eliminating meats on a daily basis

can be the first big step in saving our natural

resources”.

3. Reduce Food

Waste We totally understand the agony of

seeing something exciting on the menu but

also having your favourite signature meal at

a restaurant and not being able to decide

whether you want to order both meals or one.

Based on a recent research report released by

the Dubai Industrial Park and The Economist

Intelligence Unit, annual food waste in the UAE

is estimated at 197 kg per person, compared

with 95 to 115 kg in Europe and North America,

making food wastage one of the major crisis in

the UAE.

Every time you decide to order additional food

in thoughts of it being insufficient, keep in mind

that food waste eventually ends up at landfill

sites making it decompose or rot and emit

methane gas. Doua Benhida, Founder of Zero

Waste Collective states that she chose to do

composting to reduce the food waste at home,

and take better care of plants, additionally, it

also helps in getting rid of plastic bags in the

kitchen.

4. Support Fair Trade Products

Fairtrade has been shown to increase standards

of living and reduce risk and vulnerability for

farmers and workers. Environmental activist,

Nadia AlKhatib said she chooses fair trade

collections over fast fashion since it is good for

the environment and supports sustainable

farming practices which helps to minimise our

environmental footprint.

5. Think Before You Purchase

Consider what you really need instead of

want. When buying products, it’s always

mportant to make sure you consider how

long the item would last, would you be able

to recycle, and reuse the product once

you’ve decided to buy it. By consuming

less, you dispose a less amount of waste.

Amruta Kshemkalyani, Environmental

Activist and supporter of Zero waste,

encourages individuals to go for quality

versus quantity products since long lasting

products contribute to lesser disposal on

landfills.

6. Use Public Transportation

Ditch your cars and consider making use

of public transportation, whether it means

catching a train, boarding a bus or even

walking to your destination whenever

possible. By using gas powered cars, you

tend to increase greenhouse gas emissions

which are damaging our planet.

Rasha Saleh, Environmental Conservationist

at Connect with Nature, highly recommends

ditching cars and instead walking to your

destination or using public transportation

whenever required.

7. Make a Present Even More

Memorable

Stressing on what to gift someone

whilst keeping in mind sustainability?

Environmental Expert, Arabella Willing

from Connect with Nature, suggests

gifting memorable experiences rather than

physical products. It’s always exciting to

receive a spa voucher or even a ticket

to a theme park as memories do last

forever.

8. Adopt Don’t Shop

Looking to get a new companion? Say no to

shopping for a pet and instead adopt, this

does not only make you an eco-friendly

pet owner but also helps massively in

protecting stray animals that need your

support and helps save animals being

used for breeding purposes.

9. Reduce Electricity

Consumption

In the Middle East, living without an Air

Conditioner seems impossible. However,

Rasha Saleh, Environment Conservationist

at Connect with Nature, encourages

everyone to make a difference in their daily

lives by switching off all devices and

unplugging wires which aren’t being used.

Electricity Consumption in the Middle East

results to 47% of energy consumption. This

can be reduced by turning off lights when

not required and using power strips to

reduce plug loads.

10. Practice

management: reducing, reusing, recycling,

repurposing and refusing, the closer you

are to living a sustainable lifestyle. Raha

Moharrak, Lifestyle blogger and Adventure

enthusiast says “I believe in being the

change you want to be in the world so I

recycle as much as I can and I’m aware of

my plastic usage, I refuse to use straws and

I reduce my shower time to a responsible

duration, I always close the tap when I’m

brushing my teeth, I use energy

saving bulbs and I’m careful not to buy

inhumanity sourced products. We can

get overwhelmed with all the problems in

the world but trust me your effort makes

a difference, it’s the small things that are

done with big love that matter”.

3 Ways To Reduce Your

Equipment Maintenance

Cost

100

There’s no two ways about it: you spend a lot of money on the equipment you need for

your company. With the costs of the machinery, you don’t want to also be constantly

worrying about your equipment needing repairs. Not only does this cost you money

to have a piece of equipment maintenance, it also costs you money from a lag in the

production timeline.

Continue reading below to learn more about how you can keep your equipment performing at

the highest level.

Maintain The Proper Oil Levels With An Oil Quality Sensor

One key piece that can cause your machine to require a check-up sooner than should be

necessary is from the oil levels not being at the proper amounts. If your machine lacks the right

amount of oil, then the gears will have to work harder and they may start to grind slightly. This

will cause unnecessary wear on your equipment.

With an oil quality sensor you will be able to actively monitor any oil degradation that is taking

place. Using an oil quality sensor can help you save money on the amount of money that you

have to spend on oil as well because many oil changes are charged based upon the oil’s

condition, not on the historical schedule of changes that you’ve completed previously.

Through monitoring your machine’s oil condition, you’ll be able to have a better fundamental

understanding of your machinery and you’ll know when the optimal time is for your oil

change.

Clean Your Equipment Regularly

While this piece of advice may seem fairly obvious, that doesn’t mean that it’s not important.

You need to make sure that you clean your equipment on a regular basis to ensure that

there isn’t a build-up of dirt anywhere in the machine’s system. Preventing a build-up of

excess dirt in moving parts can help to prevent future breakages or a lack of movement. If

there is a lack of movement in one part of the machine, it could begin to cause stress. Any

stress in one part of your equipment can cause another part of the machine to overheat.

Store Your Equipment Correctly

Storage is an important part of making sure that your equipment lasts for a long time without

requiring a lot of maintenance check-ups. This is something that you should look into before

you buy any equipment for your company.

Storing your equipment properly can become especially important if you have a machine

that houses a lot of smaller pieces. Even if your equipment is meant to be used outdoors

and it can withstand harsh conditions, your machinery will still last longer if you store it

appropriately when the machinery is not in use. If your equipment will only ever be used

indoors, be sure to read through some of the user’s manual before you purchase that

equipment so you know you can take care of it correctly.
