Animals on this design all endangered
MADDISON BOTT and Olivia
Lynch from Breens Intermediate
have won first place in Toi, the
country’s largest annual wearable
arts competition for schools.
Their entry, named Tomorrow
Is Too Late, highlights the plight
of endangered animals. The
duo said: “We are here to show
awareness for our endangered
animals around the world . . .
“All the animals on this
outfit are endangered and if we
don’t act now they will become
extinct, just like the dinosaurs.
Every little bit counts. One
person can make a difference.
Change now because tomorrow
is too late.”
The top 10 national finalists
in both the open and junior
sections have all won a sewing
machine from Bernina and a
World of WearableArt prize pack
Winners Maddison Bott,
Olivia Lynch and Olivia Varley
have won tickets to attend the
2022 World of WearableArt
show in Wellington and a
voucher from The Fabric Store.
Toi is now Aotearoa’s largest
wearable arts opportunity for
school students, produced in
collaboration with WOW. It
originated as part of performing
arts competition Showquest, but
rapidly grew into a standalone
platform due to enthusiasm and
demand the event organisers
saw from art, fashion and design
focused students.
FIRST PLACE: Breens Intermediate students Maddison
Bott and Olivia Lynch with their winning design.
The goal is for students to get
a taste of WOW while at school,
and to nurture budding young
designers who may one day enter
the globally celebrated WOW
competition. This year was the
biggest yet, with 285 individual
entries of wearable art garments
throughout the country.
Toi national producer Kelsey
Moller said: “Each year the
creativity, construction and
out-of-the-box thinking steps
up a notch. We were blown away
by the ideas and stories students
brought to life in their garments
this year.”
Teams were judged by Dame
Suzie Moncrieff and Heather
Palmer from WOW on four
main areas -–concept, originality
and innovation, quality of
construction, and health and
safety (how safe the garment was
for the model to wear and move
around in).
