Time to tidy up: Derelict
buildings a ‘festering sore’
• By Emily Moorhouse
FRUSTRATION is growing
among residents as derelict
buildings continue to sit vacant
in New Brighton.
New Brighton Residents
Association acting chair Brian
Donovan said enough is
enough – it’s time for landlords
to clean up their vacant
buildings.
Donovan said the association
has been approached by many
residents over the past few
years with complaints of large
potholes in car parks and debris
flying off roofs of old vacant
buildings.
“People just continue to be
frustrated. It’s been a festering
sore, I guess you could say.”
Donovan said he has
contacted the landlords to tell
them about vandalism and
safety issues with the buildings,
but said they tend not to answer
his calls now.
“They don’t seem to be
interested in doing anything,
not even tidying up their
buildings,” he said.
The owner of the old
SaveMart building said he
has plans to incorporate
development with the Oram
Ave extension plan and is
having discussions with the city
council about this now.
The plan, which was approved
in 2016, would see Oram
building in New Brighton. Donovan says its time for landlords to clean up the derelict buildings dotted around
the suburb.
revitalise the suburb.
“I was down there last week . .
. It’s in the preliminary stages
at this point, but we do intend
to develop that section,” the
owner said.
The owner said he expects
to see some progress on
development when the “world
becomes a bit more normal”
again.
City council head of
sustainable city growth and
property Bruce Rendall said the
city council purchased the old
Westpac building, adjoining the
old SaveMart building, last year
as part of a long-term plan for
the Oram Ave extension.
Grant to combat break ins and vandalism
• By Emily Moorhouse
FUNDING TO cover costs of
security equipment means a
community group can get long
awaited projects under way.
The grant of $8728 will go
towards locks, flood lights, a
monitored security system and
drills on doors to prevent break
ins and vandalism around the
Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor.
The grant was approved by
the Waikura Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board at
its latest meeting.
Avon-Ōtākaro River network
manager Hayley Guglietta said
the grant gives the group certainty
around beginning projects
that have been in the works for a
while.
“We didn’t want to do all that
work and then have it ruined
again,” she said.
The group has had trouble in
the past with items being stolen
from the grounds and vandalism
and graffiti.
In May the group had a handmade
tabletop stolen from a children’s
playground project and
had “almost every hard surface”
along River Rd graffitied over the
school holidays last month.
Guglietta said this behaviour
will hopefully stop when security
equipment is installed and will
bring more people to the area
once projects are set up.
“Security isn’t the be all and
end all but it’s activation . . . more
people coming through means
hopefully less vandalism because
people wont want to do it when
The projects include a community
cafe on the edge of the
river with a real fruit ice cream
machine, made with fruit foraged
by the group and preserved
in jars over the last three years.
The cafe will also have a sustainable
going to be awesome for people
who are wanting to explore the
Ōtākaro, they’ll be able to grab a
coffee at the beginning or ending
of their walk,” Guglietta said.
Community board chair Alexandra
Davids said she has seen
a lot of break ins in this area,
which puts community groups
on the backfoot.
“I think for us to have an
impact on a community organisation
that gives so much to the
community is important,” she
said.
Guglietta said the income from
the cafe will allow the group to
expand and continue introducing
more community projects in
the area.
“It just means we can push on
with something we’ve been working
on for a long time,” she said.
and upwards.”
From swimming lessons to instructor
IN 2002, a five-year-old Nick
Weir jumped into the pool at
Pioneer Recreation and Sport
Centre for one of the first ever
Swimsmart lessons.
Now marking the 20 years of
the city council programme,
Weir has gone from pupil to
teacher as the swim education
team leader at Te Pou Toetoe:
Linwood Pool.
“I remember it was such a fun
environment when I was a kid.
The mix of learning a valuable
skill but not really realising it
because it was so much fun,” he
said.
From five to 14-years-old,
Weir was part of the Swimsmart
programme and two years
later he got his first job as an
instructor.
“I’ve navigated my way
• From page 1
Rendall said the city council is
having ongoing discussions with
the old SaveMart building owner
about this planned development.
Donovan said some vacant
buildings’ windows have had
bricks thrown through them,
while other buildings had been
graffitied.
He also said an elderly woman
had fallen over in the car park
area on Hawke St, trying to
navigate her way around the
through the ocean that is swim
education, first and foremost
being a swimmer, becoming an
instructor, supervisor and then
most recently becoming the
team leader at Te Pou Toetoe,”
Weir said.
“I was definitely inspired by
my years taking part in lessons.
The more kids enjoy swimming
lessons, the more they learn and
that was the case for me.”
In his current role he likes
having the opportunity to teach
and pass on the knowledge that
I’ve acquired to new instructors.
“Giving them the necessary
skills to continue to teach our
rangatahi and to continue give
back to the community an
essential life skill. My passion is
helping people and if I can do so
by continuing to help keep our
potholes.
“It’s absolutely shocking, I
have no idea how they’ve gotten
away with that, from a health
and safety point of view it’s just
dangerous.”
Coastal Ward councillor Celeste
Donovan said she’s lobbied
to have the new rating scheme
for vacant land in the central city
applied to New Brighton.
The rating scheme, approved
by the city council in June, sees
owners of empty central city
tamariki safe in the water that
to me is a job well done,” he
said.
“The Swimsmart programme
has a focus on learning how to
be safe in and around the water.
If we can help kids become
confident and help prevent
drownings that is what’s most
important.”
But even now he never misses
an opportunity to pop his togs
on and jump in the pool to help
teach the odd lesson.
“This job is something that I
absolutely love and have loved
watching children and adults
grow in their confidence and
ability over the years,” he said.
“There’s a real sense of feeling
like what we do has a positive
impact on the community. Te
Pou Toetoe and our work is
blocks pay more than four times
the standard general rate, but
only if there is no active or consented
use being made of
the land.
“It’s really important
that we don’t forget we
have the same issues in
suburban areas,” she said.
“We need to use the
same policy letters to
encourage the right kinds
of development in areas
such as New Brighton that might
making people’s lives better.”
Christchurch Recreation and
Sports Centres are marking
the 20 years of Swimsmart by
profiling 20 people who have
been involved in the programme.
have suffered from a long history
of land banking too.”
She said the scheme is about
encouraging developers
and people that own the
properties to “do the right
thing”.
Brian Donovan said
landlords’ decision to not
do anything with their
buildings was further
delaying the regeneration
of New Brighton.
“If you don’t want to sell, you
develop; if you don’t want to
develop, you sell. You know, it
seems like the simple equation
to me.”
He said the future of New
Brighton “depends” on these
landlords to make a difference
after “years and years” of these
buildings sitting vacant.
“They either play ball or just
get out and if they don’t get out
and we have to somehow find the
matters to force them out, that’s
the situation where it’s got to.”
favourite foods as a child,
her thought process
behind a successful menu
and why she is passionate
about cooking
263 x 180
PASSIONATE: Gabby Sanders has always had an interest in cooking and says food can be used as a way to bring people together.
GABBY SANDERS remembers
trying to help her mum in the
kitchen when she was a little girl
was probably “quite annoying”.
But fast forward 20 years and
that curiosity in the kitchen has
paid off – next month she will be
in Melbourne representing the
South Island in the grand finals of
the 2022 Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat
Award.
Sanders, 23, won gold at the
regional heats to qualify for the
grand finals, held at Ara Institute
of Canterbury, where she is
studying towards a diploma in
cookery level 5.
She received gold for her twocourse
menu of hoisin glaze pork,
black vinegar dumpling and
umami broth and a dessert of chai
spice cake with pear, coffee, pecan
and white chocolate.
“It was surreal, it didn’t actually
feel real because I wasn’t expecting
it to happen at all,” Sanders said.
passionate junior chef to shine
She had competed in the heats
last year, narrowly missing out on
bronze so wanted to really push
herself this year.
Sanders will be competing
against 12 other chefs, with
one other chef from the North
Island and the rest from all over
Australia.
The winner will be awarded an
AU$10,000 cash prize, something
Sanders said would be an amazing
opportunity to help expand
her cooking equipment.
“I’d be able to go out and immerse
myself in the food culture
in Christchurch and around New
Zealand a wee bit more which
would be fantastic as well.”
While Sanders has always had
an interest in cooking, she never
considered it to be her professional
career.
After leaving Lincoln High
School, Sanders worked full-time
at a supermarket, still figuring
out what she wanted to do.
Her co-worker Jeremy, who was
going through a career change
to be a chef, encouraged her to
study cookery, so she decided to
give it a go and enrolled at Ara.
Sanders said she is still in
contact with Jeremy and he was
stoked to hear about her securing
a spot in the grand finals competition.
Sanders said her mother is an
“amazing” cook and growing up,
she was encouraged to eat like an
adult and try new things.
HELPING HAND: As a child, Gabby Sanders loved to help
her mother out in the kitchen. Here she is at three-yearsold
with a cake.
“We’d always be pushed to try
new things. As a kid some of my
favourite foods were blue cheese
and pâté and olives which lots of
kids don’t really enjoy.
“I really like how food sort of
brings people together, it’s something
to enjoy with a group.”
Sanders lives with her partner
in St Albans and when asked
if they enjoy her cooking she
laughed.
“You’d think so but we eat a lot
of curries and baked beans and
stuff, just general easy dinners.”
Although, she did say she’s
been enjoying cooking heavy,
richer meals during the colder
weather, such as lamb shanks and
beef stew.
She said the most challenging
thing to cook is anything she’s
unfamiliar with as it can take a
while to get her head around it.
“I think the hardest thing to
make is probably something
you’re too scared to have a go at .
. . [but] the only thing worse than
messing something up is just not
trying in the first place.”
Sanders is “hesitantly confident”
for the grand finals and
while she’s excited to give it a go,
she’s also still processing it all.
During the regional heats,
chefs were judged on presentation,
taste and the use of ingredients
down to how clean they
are in the kitchen, general food
handling and how much food
they waste.
“You’re being watched the
whole time, it’s a bit scary,” Sanders
said.
For each competition, chefs are
given a set ingredient list which
they have to build their menu
around.
Sanders said she likes to sit
down and brainstorm what flavours
would work well together
then, with the help of her tutors,
figure out the best way to execute
each piece of the dish.
“You can always tweak it and
improve it and everyone’s taste is
different,” she said.
“It’s a group effort to get
something down that majority of
people would enjoy eating.”
Sanders works on what the
dish will look like last, once she’s
nailed the taste.
“The way it tastes is the most
important because it could look
amazing and just taste awful and
there’s not much point in that.”
As for kitchen fails, nothing
sprung to mind for Sanders,
although she admitted she has
dropped and burnt her fair share
of things.
“When you mess something
up it’s how you deal with it and
make it work in the end, it’s
always a really good learning
experience because when you
make a big mistake you’re always
going to remember it and not do
it again.”
Outside of study, Sanders
works part-time at The Monday
Room as a commis chef, a job
she scored from completing work
experience there as part of her
study.
As a commis chef, Sanders
assists the other chefs with food
preparation, particularly working
on entrées and desserts, although
she said she likes to give everything
a go.
When Sanders graduates she
said she’s open to moving around
a bit and maybe spending some
time overseas but for now she is
happy where she is, doing what
she loves.
Add some zing to your roast beef
A spicy marinade is
a good way to add
something different
to a traditional meal
Whisky marinade for beef
Serves 3-4
Ingredients
1 cup chopped pitted dates
¼ cup orange juice
1 cup peeled and diced orange
3 cups self-raising flour
¼ tsp salt
50gm chilled butter, chopped
1½ cups milk, warmed
2 tbsp cane sugar
Ingredients
Directions
¼ cup whisky
2 tbsp prepared mustard
3-4 tbsp olive oil
400g beef fillet
freshly ground black pepper
1 cup beef stock
1 tbsp thyme leaves
Directions
Whisk whisky, mustard and 3
tbsp of olive oil until well combined.
Place beef in a plastic bag.
Add marinade. Refrigerate for
60min. Return to room temperature
before cooking.
Preheat grill on high. Remove
meat from marinade and pat dry.
Brush with remaining oil. Season
with black pepper.
Grill for about 8min each side.
To test if done, press thickest part
of meat with your fingertip. The
softer it is the rarer it is; the firmer
it is, the more cooked. Tent with
foil and cover with a thick towel.
Rest for 10min before slicing.
Bring marinade, stock and
thyme to the boil. Simmer for
10min. Serve with the meat.
Roasted tomato, butter
bean, and watercress
Serves 4
Ingredients
2 tsp salt
8 tomatoes
2 cloves garlic
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp brown sugar
2 sprigs fresh rosemary
1 freshly ground black pepper,
to season
1½ cups butter beans
4 handfuls watercress,
100gm almonds, roasted and
salted
2 tsp lemon juice
1 tbsp fresh herbs, such as parsley,
oregano, marjoram, finely
chopped
1 cup creme fraiche
Directions
Preheat the oven to 220 deg C.
Arrange the tomatoes in a dish.
Drizzle over the oil, sprinkle
the salt, pepper and brown sugar.
Finely slice the garlic and add
with the rosemary.
Bake for 20min then let cool.
Combine the butter beans
with the watercress. Arrange
on a platter or individual dishes
then add the tomatoes and the
almonds.
Mix together the creme
fraiche, lemon juice and herbs.
Spoon over the salad before
serving.
Date and orange scones
Serves 6 to 8
Heat oven to 210 deg C. Line a
baking tray with baking paper.
In a bowl, combine the
chopped dates with the orange
juice and cover with plastic wrap.
Microwave for 1-2 minutes, until
the dates absorb the orange juice.
Add the diced orange.
Sift the flour and salt into a
bowl. Rub in the butter until the
mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Add the warm milk to the
date and orange mixture, stir to
combine then mix quickly into
the flour with a spatula. Do not
knead.
Turn out on to a floured
bench. Dust the top with flour
and pat out to an even rectangle
about 2.5cm thick with your
hands.
Cut the mixture into squares
or rounds. Place the scones on
the prepared tray.
Sprinkle with the sugar. Bake
for about 20min.
We have hit the ground
running in Term 3 and are
already enjoying significant
success with many of the
projects we have running
for ākonga. The Ministry of
Education arranged for a
film crew to visit the kura
in Week 2 of the term to
capture footage of the day to
day life of ākonga in the kura
within Kōmanawa - Māori
medium. Whānau participated
in interviews to give voice to
the dreams, aspirations and
expectations they have around
ako/teaching and learning
for their tamariki. We look
forward to viewing the end
product and sharing that with you through our
website.
It was with a real sense of excitement that
we partnered with Ko Māui Hangarau on
Thursday, 4th August 2022 to present the
Māori Tech Innovators and Entrepreneurs
Summit. The event was designed to capture
the hearts and minds of Rangatahi who have
an interest in Digital Innovation, Technology
and Entrepreneurship. Rangatahi had the
opportunity to meet some of the best Māori
Tech Innovators and Entrepreneurs in the
country here at Haeata.
It was exciting to have Tom Aleasna at kura on
Monday, 1 August 2022 to assist ākonga with
Kapa Haka. Tom wrote the kura haka and a
selection of original waiata specifically for our
ākonga. He is a taonga and we
are grateful for his awhi in that
space.
A huge thank you to kaimahi
and whānau for their support
of our ākonga during the
Matariki celebrations. It was
wonderful to see the displays
of ākonga work and to host so
many people at kura for the
celebrations.
Finally, I hope that you have
put your name forward for the
Haeata Board. Governance
is an exciting wero and a
platform for increasing skills,
confidence and community
engagement. Thank you for all
your wonderful support of our
kura, its kaimahi and ākonga. Kaha ake tahi - we
Hikuawa & Kaunuku Update:
Manu Tukutuku for Matariki
He manu aute e taea
te whakahoro!
A flying-kite made of paper mulberry
bark can be made to fly fast!
In Term 2, ākonga across Years 1-8 in
Hikuawa and Kaunuku hapori learned
about the important role that kites have
always played for Māori throughout
history and in particular during the winter
season when they were flown to signify
the start of Matariki, the Māori New Year.
The Māori kite is called manu tukutuku or
manu aute – manu translates as either kite
or bird. Kites were also known as pākau,
a name for the wing of a bird.
Haeata Services Academy NZDF Bushcraft
Course 2022
What is Bushcraft?
Bushcraft is to successfully tramp, camp, hike,
plan a tramp, navigate and survive in the New
Zealand wilderness which if not prepared could
kill you.
The NZDF bushcraft course is managed by the
(New Zealand Defence Force), and this year
the training was held at Orton Bradley Park
from 27th June to the 1st July 2022.
40 young people from 3 different schools
attend the course through the Services
Academy’s of their schools, Aurora College,
Grey High and Haeata students arrived on a
cool Monday afternoon, and waiting for them
were members of the Youth Life Skills team
from Burnham Military Camp.
Time was not being wasted as students were
into their first lesson on tent construction,
then layering and so on to capturing water and
stretcher construction, to leading a tramp.
The frosty early wake ups and rainy late nights
took a toll on the group however they worked
well together to get through, showing resilience
and time management, and after the 5 days the
group of young people did well, with leaders
emerging and everyone stepping up.
The course was challenging and tough for the
group, they got through it as best as they could,
and because of the course of the challenge
they learnt a lot about themselves, and of
the dangers of not being prepared in the NZ
backcountry and bush.
The course is to practise and prepare for the
coast to coast adventure challenge later in the
term run again by the NZDF.
Towards the end of term 2 we celebrated
the start of our Matariki Public Holiday,
the first ever in Aotearoa on June 24
and we made some manu tukutuku to
signify this important event. We had to
test which materials were the best for
flying and how we could gather and use
traditional materials and follow tikanga.
Some ākonga focused
their manu tukutuku to
represent one of the atua
and what is associated
with that atua - so they
designed the atua and then
drew pictures around them
- eg. Tane Mahuta trees/
birds etc.
74A MONCKS SPUR ROAD | REDCLIFFS
37 PORT HILLS ROAD | HOME IN HEATHCOTE VALLEY
It's a wonderful feeling inspecting a HOME which presents well, leaving
you more time to imagine what your life would be like living there, rather
than what you need to fix before moving in.
The HOME itself has oodles of character and charm: the perfect HOME to
raise a family for years to come, ideal for those who adore character homes.
3 BED 1 BATH 1 CAR
586 M2
(MORE OR LESS)
Then there are the bedrooms. All rooms are quite capable of fitting kingsized
beds and the high ceilings make you feel like you have an abundance
of space.
Greeted by an oversized door which then opens into a large entranceway,
the immediate feeling of space creates an inviting feeling. The kitchen,
dining, and main living space are filled with natural light, and the openplan
nature of the HOME emphasizes the functional floor plan. With all the
hard work completed, you can start to appreciate this wonderful HOME.
For the keen gardener, there is enough yard to satisfy your green thumb,
install a vegetable patch or keep some chooks.
Location wise could not get much better. You have the sought-after local
school and pre-school all minutes away. You are only 6 minutes from
Lyttelton, and due to the main ring roads, you are only 10 minutes away
from the CBD. You also have local conveniences a short stroll away and
some of Christchurch's best walking and biking tracks on your doorstep.
Situated on 926m2 prime St Albans land, this is the perfect opportunity to
3 BED 1 BATH 2 CAR
926 M2
(MORE OR LESS)
The main living and dining face North West flow into the outdoor area,
creating the perfect platform for entertaining guests. The fluid layout of
the kitchen, living and dining makes family living an absolute breeze. With
exposed brick features adding a touch of class to the HOME, the addition
of a mud room/laundry, a beautiful private and tranquil garden setting
which includes an organic kitchen garden, all make this a special property
indeed.
Three spacious bedrooms complete the HOME and give each family
member their very own space. For large families the double garage and offstreet
parking in a quiet lane is perfect for storing extra vehicles or the kids
wanting to play ball in the safety of their own driveway. Zoned for Paparoa
Street Primary, Heaton Intermediate and close to a number of private
schools.
