Karate exponent sets sights
on being a world champion

BRITNEY Aldridge was
five-years-old when her
parents took her to a karate
course for self-defence
reasons.
Little did she know she
would stay in the sport for
another 18 years. After years
of competing, Aldridge, 23, is
now ranked 64th worldwide.
She, along with 19 other
New Zealand athletes, will
compete in the 2022 Commonwealth
Karate Championship
in Birmingham,
England, next month.
“At first, it wasn’t really
anything involved. I just
learned how to defend myself
because I was pretty short as
a kid,” the Papanui resident
said. “And then I started competing
when I was seven.”
She won her first world
championship medal at 10.
Four years later, Aldridge
made the national team.
Her most memorable year
came in 2015. It was not
only her injury year, but also
the year she won gold in
the Commonwealth Karate
Championship.
She had only trained three
times before competing in
India due to a broken foot.
“I did not know what I was
walking into and just did
what I could.
“The result ended up being
a good one,” she said.

School rebuild one step
closer to completion

BURNSIDE’S Wairarapa
Cobham Intermediate has
opened three new hapori
classroom buildings and a stateof-the-art
STEAM unit.
THe new learning spaces
are part of the Christchurch
Schools Rebuild Programme,
which involves redeveloping 115
earthquake-damaged schools.
The rebuild has three phases,
with the final stage – including
the administration block and hall
– expected to open in late 2023.
The school has honoured its
history by using brick cladding
reminiscent of the now demolished
classrooms and named
breakout spaces after influential
alums and past staff. Class configurations
allow for both modern
learning environments and
traditional classroom spaces.
The specialised STEAM building
has technical learning areas for
hard and soft materials, food,
science and digital technologies.
Students have been enjoying
the new spaces for three weeks.
When asked for her opinion on
the new buildings, head student
Natsuki Hastie said: “They are
new and warm and are a lovely
space to learn in.”

buildings, Cobham began using
its gifted name of Wairarapa
alongside a new logo and branding.
The intermediate will share
the newly configured campus
alongside Burnside Primary
and Pītau-Allenvale School. The
schools worked collectively with
local iwi Ngāi Tūāhuriri, who
presented the kāhui ako with a
cultural narrative which has informed
the rebuild of the school.
School tours of the new
buildings are available now for
the incoming cohort of year 7
students.
These pupils will also wear a
brand new uniform when they
start in 2023. It was designed
with help from current students
to ensure it is an inclusive,
ethical, and equitable uniform.

after the nationwide lockdown
forced the cancellation of last
year’s street appeal.

has been impacted,” Locke said.

Talented trio place second in nationals
A YOUNG trio has won a
prestigious award at the recent
NZCT Chamber Music Finale in
the Auckland.
The Berlin Trio – featuring
talented Christ’s College
musicians Joshua Hooker and
Ryan Gu – won praise for
“phenomenal playing of a very
virtuosi work” in “a committed
and bravura performance,” the
judges said.
Along with Joshua’s sister,
Jasmine, a cellist, the trio won
the Helen Young national second
place award. The professional
performance has also been
recorded by Radio New Zealand.
There were 380 ensembles vying
for a spot in the finale, but only

some disruption in the coming
weeks as contracting crews begin
upgrading a major intersection.
They are going to be installing
a raised safety platform at the
busy intersection of Lincoln Rd,
Barrington St and Whiteleigh
Ave to encourage people to travel
through it at safer speeds.
“This intersection is used
by about 50,000 vehicles a day
and by many pedestrians and
cyclists,’’ city council head of
transport Lynette Ellis said.

At just 14, pianist Ryan, of
Riccarton, is already highly
skilled while Joshua, 16, of
Burnside, is a violinist of
equally rare talent. In spite of
their youth, both boys hold
a Licentiate of Music from
Trinity College, London, with
distinction. Joshua also has
attained LTCL in piano.
The boys said it had not been an
easy journey to the finale: “When
we first picked up the piece, it
looked easy. It seemed like it
could be put together in a month.
However, we came to realise very
quickly that would not be the
case. Preparing any type of music
to a high level requires hours and
hours of work and you only play it
well if you put in the work.”
As the competition drew
closer, their hours or preparation
rapidly climbed – up to about
14 hours a week. But once they
walked onto the stage, they felt
relaxed and ready.
“I thoroughly enjoyed myself,”
Joshua said. “We took on board
the judges’ suggestions regarding
techniques to deal with nerves
and played our hearts out.”

Traffic disruption likely at busy intersection
“Whether

intersection by
car, on foot, by
bike or on a bus,
we want them

treatment that is increasingly being
used across New Zealand to
improve safety through intersections
and crossings by encouraging
safer speeds, but this is the
first time we’ve installed one at
a major Christchurch intersection,’’
Ellis said.
The intersection upgrade
will take about two months to
complete and is part of a bigger
project to install peak-hour bus
lanes on Lincoln Rd to improve
the reliability of bus services
to and from the fast-growing
south-west.
Contractors are also replacing
an ageing water main underneath
Lincoln Rd.
The intersection will be upgraded
in three stages, beginning
on Monday. From August 29,
lane reductions will be in place.
“At the end of September we
will need to fully close the intersection
for three days so that
the raised safety platform can
be installed and the intersection
approaches resurfaced. We will
provide more details about this
closure and the detours that will
be in place closer to the time,’’
Ellis said.
“We also want people to be
aware that we will be resealing
parts of Lincoln Rd and Moorhouse
Ave in the second half of
September. This work will be
done at night but it will require
us to restrict traffic on Lincoln
Rd, between Whiteleigh Ave and
Moorhouse Ave, to one-way citybound
only.’’
During the day, Lincoln Rd
will re-open to two-way traffic.
“If you are going to be travelling
on Lincoln Rd or in the Addington
area over the next couple of
months please be aware that you
might encounter road works and
factor a little extra journey time
into your day,’’ Ellis said.

Rotary raises $75,000 for
NZ Flying Doctor Service
THE ROTARY Club of Christchurch
has donated $25,000 to the New Zealand
Flying Doctor Trust this month, bringing
its total commitment over the last three
years to $75,000.
Trust chair Dr David Bowie, who recently
met with the Rotary clubs to accept
the cheque on behalf of the service, says
this commitment from organisations like
Rotary is vital for the ongoing service.
“Each year the trust needs to raise at
least $3 million and the need for this
life-saving service increases year on
year. The crew have been inspired by the
community who have continued to offer
sponsorships and support during these
challenging times,” he said.
The New Zealand Flying Doctor Service
was tasked to 1070 missions across
the country last year, and is on track to
surpass that number, with 580 missions
in the first six months of 2022.
With four planes and bases in Christchurch
and Nelson, the air ambulance
upped its critical-care patient transfer
services between hospitals across the
South Island, including the Chatham
Islands, and also further afield to Starship
in Auckland, Taranaki and Wellington.
“We started the year with over 100
missions in January, and this number was
surpassed in May with 110 missions,” he
said.
As a flying intensive care unit with
highly trained medical staff and specialist
equipment, patients receive a seamless
level of care from bed to bed. The service

female category. She also
snatched a bronze medal
for the kata individual female
junior and gold in the
junior under-53kg kumite
category in the following
World Goju Karate Championships.
Kumite, known as sparring,
means free-form
fighting between two
opponents using defensive
and offensive techniques.
The competitors can kick,
punch or takedown their
opponents as long as they
are staying in the 8m x 8m
mat. This is one of the three
main sections of karate.
In the following years,
Aldridge continued her
stunning form winning
multiple national and international
championships.
“I find that I get nervous
more for regional and
national tournaments than
the international tournaments,”
she said.
“It’s always a bit more
pressure having your teammates
and your national
coaches watching you.”
In spite of having osteoarthritis
since 18, this
160cm athlete still trains
every day before and after
work as a receptionist at a
law firm.
“For the past four years,
training has been very specific
of what I can and can
not do because some days,
it is hard to walk.”
However, she is grateful
of the support system
around her.
At the moment, her main
goal is to become world
champion.
“Now that Covid-19 has
finished, and I’m over the
age of 18, I can go to the
senior world championships.
“At the moment, I’m
looking at doing the three

“So, I will be in the sport
for a while – hopefully.”
Like many other professional
karate athletes, she
is awaiting the decision to
be made on the 2028 Los
Angeles Olympics after
karate was left off the Paris
2024 programme.
She hopes to inspire more
people, especially young
females, to get involved
with the sport.
“Any small females or
young kids can look at me
and think ‘if she can do
that, I can do that’.”
Aldridge has set up
a Givealittle page to
fundraise for her trip to
Birmingham, which would
cost $3000.
“This trip is the most
costly of all previous years
with no funding at all and
