City art Did you know that Johannesburg is jam-packed full of beautiful public art? Murals, sculptures, and mosaics line the bustling streets, especially in the inner city, bringing colour and fun to the urban centre. I ART JOBURG WORDS & PHOTOS BY JO BUITENDACH Public art is for everyone. Unlike private art collections and galleries, it’s not kept behind a wall and out of sight. It’s erected in public spaces and is often sponsored by the government or corporates. It teaches us about our history, both the good and the bad, and the individuals who shaped it. It beautifies the city and creates employment for artists. And while it’s not going to solve all our problems (loadshedding included) it can bring us joy and beauty. Joburg’s inner city has hundreds of public art pieces. Here are a few standout pieces to get you started on your urban art exploration. The Eland, an imposing statue by Clive van den Berg, was created to act as a statement piece, welcoming you to the city as you enter Braamfontein. This cast-concrete artwork of a sacred eland tackles our relationship with the land, spirituality, and our past. Cnr Bertha and Ameshoff Street, Braamfontein The Braamfontein Trees is a series of uniquely shaped sculptures. They were originally commissioned as part of an upgrade of the Braamfontein area in 2007. The laser-cut steel trees were designed by Claire Regnard and Newtown’s Imbali Visual Literacy Project.
