Common
Sedge
Carex nigra
Common Sedge is
a perennial in the
Sedge family, the
Cyperaceae. The
leaves are grasslike
but ‘plicate’ or
corrugated. The
flower-heads,
contrasting with
the yellow anthers,
are distinctively
black when they
emerge, hence the
name ‘nigra’.
A good indicator of
more acidic
meadows, also
found in mires.
