Rajah Shriner making
music at Grand Lodge
By Sam Ellis
He has been playing piano and organ since he was eight. Rajah Shriner Robert
Trimble is Grand Organist for Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. And he never thought
he would be doing what he is doing now.
I first became aware of Robert (Bob) Trimble and his unique position at Grand
Lodge while taking pictures at the Ladies Meat Bingo on May 13th. I wanted to get
a shot of the nobles and ladies who were working in the kitchen. While I was lining
up everyone for the shot, Jim Prettyman mentioned that one of the nobles in the
picture plays organ at Grand Lodge. I thought ‘you don’t meet someone like that
every day and this would be a great story for Rajah News.’ So here it is.
Robert said, “I started with piano lessons in grade school. Later on I took lessons
on the organ. So, I’ve been playing pretty much all my life.” He is now age 63. He
came to the position of Grand Organist in 2009 after an interview with then Grand
Master Stephen Gardner. The Grand Master was attending the Grand Matron’s Banquet and heard Robert playing the organ for the
ceremonies.

“I was told that the Grand Master wanted to see me after the Banquet,” Bob said. “I didn’t
know what to think. Did I do something wrong?” So, he went back into the auditorium after
the event and found the Grand Master sitting on the organ bench. The interview went well and
after some official paperwork down in Philly, the deal was done and Robert has been in the
appointed position of Grand Organist ever since.
He plays for various functions at Grand Lodge as well as functions and events outside of
the lodge such as weddings, funerals, and official ceremonies. “I also enjoy that part of the
position, playing in other locations such as at the Naval Academy,” said Robert. “Meeting new
brethren and having the opportunity to play different and sometimes very old organs is always
and enjoyable experience.”
Robert comes to the position of Grand Organist with an impressive Masonic background.
He has been a member of New London Lodge No. 545 since 1988. He was Worshipful
Master of the lodge in 2002 and served as secretary for 16 years. Bob is a member of the Valley
of Reading and received his 33 degree in 2019. He was Most Wise Master of the Valley in 2021.
Robert also belongs to the Royal Arch No. 264 in Coatesville and Centennial Commandry No.
55 in Coatesville.
Eastern Star has been a part of his Masonic life also. He’s been involved in the Robert
Fulton Chapter No. 446 Order of Eastern Star for the last 21 years. He often plays the organ at meetings, balls, and ceremonies.
This past June, Robert was installed as Associate Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of PA.
He also holds memberships in the Royal Order of Scotland, Red Cross of Constantine, and Tall Cedars of Lebanon. Oh, and he’s
been a Rajah Shriner for 33 years.
When I asked what keeps him involved with being Grand Organist, he said, “I guess the bottom line is I enjoy making people
smile.”
