Local Races Heating Up for November 8 Election Day
The upcoming Mid-Term election is fast approaching. Election Day 2022 is slated for November 8 - traditionally
the second Tuesday of November. In California, however, voters will be able to do their civic duty at
their own convenience. Every registered voter in the state will receive a ballot in the mail. Said ballots may be
completed and mailed in, or taken to a nearby voting station, or even dropped off in a certified box to be counted.
The expression “Mid-Term” arguably evokes a sense that it’s somehow a less important event than its counterpart
- the Presidential Election. And, while it’s true that we are not voting on the Presidency of the nation
this time, this election has a lot riding on it.
On the national level, the question of which party will run the U.S. Congress is of paramount concern to many.
For the Central Valley, the representative district lines have changed slightly for the coming election, as they
have in areas throughout the state. The non-partisan California independent redistricting commission, while
not without its problems, provides a model for keeping corruption out of the drawing of the district maps.
Due to changes in population centers since the previous decade, Congressional lines have shifted. In a timely
sort of way, the Congressional Representative for Mountain House - Gerry McNerney - is retiring at the end of
this term. As it turns out, Congressman Josh Harder’s lines were redrawn and ultimately shifted him into part
of what had previously been McNerney’s coverage area. The result is we have an incumbent Congressional
Representative running for re-election in what amounts to a partially new district for him.
In addition to balancing population numbers, the Independent redistricting commission had to comply with the
federal Voting Rights Act, ensuring that no minority group’s vote is drowned out. And to create fair maps, the
commission didn’t consider current district lines and isn’t supposed to weigh partisan politics. In some cases,
it puts incumbents into the same district, or forces others to appeal to new voters to be re-elected.
Bottom line for Congressional District 9, which includes Mountain House, is that Congressman Josh Harder
serves as the Democratic incumbent. His Republican opponent is San Joaquin County Supervisor, District 3,
Tom Patti.
On the more local level, there are two big races in Mountain House on which voters will decide. The Community
Services District Board of Directors (MHCSD) has two of its five seats on the ticket. The Lammersville
Unified School District Board of Trustees (LUSD) has two of its five seats open for a regular four-year term, as
well as a third “Short Term” seat for a two year term. The oddity occurs in the fallout of two board members
resigning their positions as they each had cause to move out of the area. Appointed replacements must now be
elected; one for four years; the other for two.
Current MHCSD Board President, Manuel Moreno is up for re-election, and the seat currently occupied by
Director Brian Lucid is coming available. Mr. Lucid declined to file papers to pursue re-election, citing personal
reasons.
As it happens, in addition to Manny Moreno, five new candidates have emerged to fill one or both of the
available two seats. August 12 was the deadline to register with the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters
for those wishing to run for office. There are five registered challengers for the Mountain House Community
Services District Board of Directors to go against President Moreno and/or the seat left open by the departure
of Director Lucid.
In order, alphabetically by last name, the candidates for MHCSD Board of Directors are:
Matt Earnest aka Matt Disko - Business Owner/Entrepreneur
Ronna Green - Business Owner
Asif Mohammed - Software Engineer
Manuel “Manny” Moreno - Incumbent
Umar J. Sear - Project Manager
Suresh Vuyyuru - Engineer/Parent
The LUSD Board of Trustees race is slightly more complicated. Current Board President, Colin Clements, is
up for re-election. Appointed incumbent, Trustee Vanitha Daniel, is also up for a four year seat, while fellow
appointed incumbent, Lisa Boulais, must run for a two-year term - at the end of which the seat will then revert to
every four years for her, or whomever occupies the seat should one of her challengers defeat her come November.
The race, then, is divided into two parts. The two four year chairs, currently occupied by Clements and Daniel,
are one part of the race. There is one registered challenger taking the two of them on. That is long time resident
Arjun Juturu. That makes three candidates vying for two seats.
The other part of the race is the seat occupied by appointed incumbent, Lisa Boulais. She, however, has two
challengers facing off with her. Three candidates vying for just one short term seat. Got all that?
Here’s a breakdown of the candidates in this two part race for LUSD Board of Trustees:
For the two four-year seats that will serve the board of Trustees, there are three candidates:
Colin Clements - Incumbent
Vanitha Daniel - Appointed Incumbent
Arjun Juturu - Business owner
Running for the one (1) two-year “Short Term” board of Trustees position there are three candidates:
Lisa Boulais - Appointed Incumbent
Harmeet Gill - Agricultural/Scientist/Father
Jasjeet Kaur Singh - Doctor/Parent
Board members for the MHCSD and LUSD are each paid a modest stipend of $100 per meeting they attend
for the course of a (generally) four year term. Each must be a resident within the district they are serving. For
the MHCSD that means residing within the borders of Mountain House. For the LUSD, Trustees may be from
Mountain House, or within the area of Tracy under the jurisdiction of Lammersville Elementary School, located
on von Sosten Rd. at Hansen Rd.
The races for both of these boards carry some heavy weight, despite the lack of a paycheck. A lot rides on the
decisions they must make. Each and every candidate deserves some recognition for being willing to step up to
serve the community in ways that will reflect the wants and needs of their constituents.
In next month’s issue, MHMatters will publish brief summary bios and candidate statements from the various
residents in the races. It’s important for all to keep in the forefront of your perception that we are all ultimately
neighbors here and, while the various candidates are sure to have different perspectives on how policies and
direction should go, there is no room for underhanded or mean-spirited interactions.
May the best campaigners and the best candidates for the jobs be victorious. Everyone participating is to be
commended for putting themselves out there.
Mountain House Matters To Host Candidate Discussion Events
Mountain House Matters is also planning to host one Candidate Discussion event for both of
these races. The plan is to hold these discussions live and in-person, with all the candidates in the
respective race being present and included. We also hope to then live stream these events online
for all to be able to see, and hopefully participate in. Both events will be held at The Library/Town
Hall Community Room, 201 E. Main St., Mountain House
KEEPING RAINWATER FROM CARRYING HAZARDOUS
MATERIALS DOWN A STORM DRAIN
What You Can Do With Household Hazardous Waste: Which products are hazardous?
• Automotive: Oil, transmission fluid, gasoline/diesel fuel
• Home improvement: Oil-based products, glue, rust remover
• Pesticides/weed killers Cleaners: Tub and tile, oven
• Other: nail polish, hair relaxer, mercury thermometer, alcohol-based lotion, prescription
medication, aerosol cans
• Get more information
How do I store my products?
• Keep unused products in their original containers with their label intact.
• Keep all lids and caps on and tightly closed – store products inside dry, cool areas, away
from kids and pets.
• Only buy what you need and maintain a small inventory.
How do I dispose of my products?
• Never dump household hazardous waste down storm drains, sinks, or on the ground.
Take them to a recycling location.
• Contact your local community or county for household hazardous waste collection options.
What alternatives can I use?
• Try using baking soda, white vinegar, and essential oils when cleaning
your house. For example, sprinkle baking soda and vacuum to clean carpets. Spraying
vinegar water is an easy way to clean windows.
What You Can Do About Storm Drains:
• Sweep extra fertilizer, grass clippings, and dirt on your driveway back onto your lawn
• Hosing down your driveway sends these pollutants into storm drains that lead to lakes, streams,
and beaches. Only allow rain to go down the drain
• Never dump motor oil, chemicals, pet waste, leaves, dirty or soapy water, or
anything else down the storm drain. All of these materials pollute our lakes and streams.
What You Can Do With Landscaping:
How can I maintain my lawn and garden while protecting our waterways?
• Go native ~ Select plants native to Central Valley. Native plants can better tolerate Central valley’s
climate, require less fertilizer and water, and are more disease resistant.
• Plant a rain garden ~ Use native plants in low areas where rainwater collects in your yard to
trap, absorb, and filter stormwater.
• Diversify your plantings ~ Use a wide variety of plants to help control pests and minimize the
need for pesticides.
WATER CONSERVATION
Due to the ongoing drought issues, we
must return to a Stage 3 Water Shortage
Emergency. We want all residents to
immediately begin reducing their water
consumption by 20% from last year.
If you have already been conserving
water and your usage is at 120 gallons
per day or less, there is no need to lower
your amount.
If your residential status has changed
from the previous year, i.e., additional
family members have moved in, or you
have a new home (renter or buyer) with
no history, you can submit a Request for
an increase.
WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT PET CARE:
HOW CAN I KEEP HARMFUL BACTERIA OUT OF
OUR LAKES, RIVERS, AND BEACHES?
WE ARE ALSO ASKING ALL RESIDENTS TO FOLLOW THE
YARD WATERING SCHEDULE (shown left)
• Place a thick layer of mulch (four inches) around trees and plants. ~ This helps retain water, reduces
weeds, and minimizes the need for pesticides.
• Plant a tree ~ Trees can provide many benefits, such as soaking up water,
which improves your community’s environment and quality of life.
A typical, medium-sized tree can capture 2,380 gallons of rainwater per year.
• Rake it or leave it ~ Follow your community’s leaf pick-up guidelines. Avoid raking leaves
into storm drains or roadside ditches. Try mowing leaves into your lawn—they
also make a good fertilizer!
• Use pesticides and herbicides sparingly ~ Limit application of these chemicals to
problem areas only.
• Capture the rain ~ Use a rain barrel to water your plants.
Do not forget to empty it when it is full.
• Dispose of it promptly and properly ~ Whether in your yard
or on a walk, promptly dispose of your pet’s waste in the
trash.
• Pick up before lawn watering ~ Pick up after your pets before
watering your yard or cleaning patios or driveways. Do not
use a hose to clean pet waste off driveways or sidewalks.
• Share the message ~ When at a park, community meeting,
or talking with your friends, spread the word about the
positive impact picking up after your pet can have on water
quality.
If you want to provide educational opportunities
for your children or grandchildren, you may want
to consider investing in a 529 plan. In recent years,
this plan has gotten more flexible, and potentially
more powerful, than ever.
A key benefit of a 529 plan is that earnings are
generally tax free, provided the money is used for
qualified educational expenses. As the owner of the
plan, you can essentially name any beneficiary you
want, and you’re free to change the beneficiary as
needed. Contribution limits are quite high, so you
can put away considerable sums in a 529 plan – and
you may want to, because college costs have risen
steadily over the years. In fact, for the 2021-’22
academic year, the College Board reports that the
average cost (tuition, fees, room and board) of a
public, four-year college or university was more
than $27,000 for in-state students and nearly
$56,000 for students at private schools.
But 529 plans are no longer just for higher education.
Over the past few years, the rules governing
529 plans have changed, so they can now be used
for:
• K-12 tuition expenses (up to $10,000 per
student, per year),
• Apprenticeship programs registered with the
U.S. Department of Labor, and
• Student loans ($10,000 lifetime limit for
student loan repayments per each 529 plan
beneficiary and another $10,000 for each of the
beneficiary’s siblings.)
And soon, a major change will affect the relationship
between grandparent-owned 529 plans and
the financial aid packages awarded to their grandchildren.
Families applying for aid have not been
required to report grandparent-owned 529 account
assets on the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA). However, under previous rules, you had
to report withdrawals from the grandparent-owned
plans as untaxed student income, which could
reduce aid eligibility by up to 50% of the amount
of cash received.
But that’s changing for the 2024-’25 FAFSA, which
won’t require students to report cash support, including
money taken from a grandparent-owned
529 plan. Instead, a student’s total income amount
will be reported directly from federal income tax
returns. This means that a grandparent-owned 529
plan won’t have any effect on need-based financial
aid eligibility. This benefit to families is already here,
because 2022 will be used as the base year for the
2024-’25 FAFSA, so any withdrawals taken in 2022,
and also going forward, won’t need to be reported
as student income.
With this change, families will now have more
options on using 529 plans without jeopardizing financial
aid. You can generally withdraw any amount
from the aggregate of all 529 plans for higher
education costs, but only the qualified withdrawals
– the ones used for typical education-related
expenses – will be tax-free. The earnings portion
of non-qualified withdrawals are taxable and could
also incur a 10% penalty.
Given the new rules affecting a grandparent-owned
529 plan, you should consult with a financial professional
to determine how this plan can work with
other strategies to help meet educational expenses
while, at the same time, not detracting from the
progress you’d like to make on other important
goals, such as a comfortable retirement.
In any case, consider looking into a 529 plan – it was
already a great tool for education funding, and it can
now offer your family even more options.
Safeway Fuel Station To Open September 28
Supply parts delay sets opening of store back until late this year even as shops begin to open in the retail buildings
Issue #104 • September 2022
Cries of “why is it taking so long,” or “see! we’re
never getting a Safeway,” can be heard through the
ether of the internet. Safeway has reportedly fallen
to the effect of what has become the proverbial
supply chain issue decree. A key electrical switch
necessary for the completion of an operable market
has reportedly been on back-order. Word from the
Project Supervisor in early August was that they
were told it would be here Sept 1. MHMatters has
not confirmed at press time whether that part came in.
Regardless, the reality is the store will open sometime
soon, hopefully before year’s end.
However, all is not lost, oh no no-oh! For those of
you who have not had an opportunity in recent days
to drive by, the Safeway Fuel Station is poised to
open on September 28, 2022, according to the big
sign posted at the edge of the Starbucks. There is
no indication as to whether the convenience market
will also be open at that time, too, but residents are
already expressing delight in their anticipation of
having an actual gas station within our community
town limits. Additional shops are poised to open
soon, as well, so keep your eyes peeled. JEI Learning
Center just opened September 7, along with Starbucks
in mid-August. Signs are out for the Aappakadai Indian
Restaurant coming soon, which will serve South
Indian Chettinad Food, along with offering delivery.
More is on the horizon, too. In no time, folks will
forget how long we waited for these amenities to
begin to show up.
Pumpkin Festival
& Food Drive
Returns October 23
@ Central Park
Submitted by Colleen Jacobsen,
Go2Realty Pros
The Pumpkin Festival is back
after a two year hiatus due
to the pandemic and subsequent
surges over 2020 and
2021.
We started the Pumpkin Festival in 2012 as a way
to thank our friends and neighbors for allowing
us the opportunity to do business here in Mountain
House. Each year since then we gave away
pumpkins to carve with our kids. That was the
foundation of our event.
Over the years we scaled the event to become a
huge community wide festival. We were able to
bring in more activities and help support one of our
favorite organizations, Second Harvest of Central
Valley Food Bank.
This year we will bring back our pumpkin giveaway,
while supplies last. We will have 3 ponies,
a petting zoo, mechanical bull, a 360 photo booth,
a 25ft rock climbing wall, bouncy houses, DJ and
Music plus food trucks! All activities are free of
charge, except the food trucks. The Pumpkin Festival
will be bigger and better than ever.
This year we will be introducing a Chili Cook Off.
We are looking for the best chili in town! So mix
up your best batch and join the competition! For
questions and additional information go to http://
www.mhrealestate.com/chilicookoff.
Interested in sponsoring or judging the competition?
We couldn’t live and work in a town we love so
much with out the trust and support the Mountain
House community puts in us. We are so grateful
for you, MH!
We look forward to seeing everyone there!
En pointe Dance Studio Bursting at the Seams,
but Making the Most of Available Space
13
Hazel Maglasang has been involved
in dance since she was seven
years old. A long time resident
of Mountain House, she started En
pointe Dance studio in December
2016, with a Grand Opening Started
January 14, 2017. Her goal was
to bring that valuable experience
to the youth of our town. A few
years into it and she finds herself
with more than 300 students and
searching for a solution to adequate
facilities, and a permanent home for her studio.
For the time being, at least, she has been able to
secure space on a temporary basis using the town
hall lobby.
“There’s definitely a need in the community.”
Her En pointe Dance troop performed at this year’s
July 4th Festival in Central Park, doing her proud
showing off their skills and abilities.
“I struggled as a child and I just want better for
kids these days,” she explained. “Help them
navigate life.”
While she is looking still for a more permanent
solution, she expressed her gratitude for being
able to make use of this space.
the stage. Introduced by their instructor, Mythreyi Sanisetty, the duo showed grace and talent
throughout their 20 minute performance.
Punjabi Folk song artist Rajn Sandhu, came on to perform a duet with Moonmita before she and
her band turned the stage over to him for about a half hour set of his own.
Despite the extreme heat of the day, the entire show ran smoothly and all the acts were top notch.
The next Music In The Park will be held September 17, featuring the return of Steelin’ Chicago - a
Re-Elect
Colin Clements
to the LUSD Board of Trustees
Colin Clements is a CPA with over 25 years
of experience in construction, including
the planning and construction of schools.
These skills remain critical to the District
as it seeks to build three more elementary
schools and additional buildings at the
high school.
Colin Clements has a history of service to our District that began even before
serving on the Lammersville Unified School District Board:
3 Executive Board Member: Wicklund School Foundation, Bethany School Foundation,
Questa School Fountation, and Mountain House High School Visual and Performing Arts Booster Club
3 Founding Executive Board Member: Mountain House High School Athletic Booster Club
Successes on Behalf of the District Before Joining the LUSD School Board:
3 Ensured that the District received $8 million in matching funds on Bethany Elementary School,
rather than the $4 -$5 million that the District initially appealed for by meeting with members of
the State Allocation Board.
3 Leveraged contacts at the Division of State Architects to quickly resolve a recurring natural gas leak at
Wicklund Elementary School that had been dragging on for approximately six months.
District Successes During Colin’s Tenure on the LUSD School Board:
While a School Board Member cannot take individual credit, there are a number of notable accomplishments
that the District has achieved during his tenure on the Board, including:
• Passed “Measure L” to enable LUSD to complete the high school.
• Planned, designed, and financed six different schools and other facilities.
• Implemented use of “Land Sale Transactions” whereby the district receives more
matching funds from the state without costing the District or the developer any
additional money.
• Maintained ranking as the highest performing school district in San Joaquin County.
• Surpassed Livermore schools (based upon CAASPP scores), and closing gap with
Dublin and Pleasanton schools.
• Transitioned to remote learning within 72 hours of Governor mandated lockdown
(45% of schools in California could not even provide regular access to teachers
within four weeks of lockdown).
The Talented Prawira Siblings of Mountain House
Rising Science Stars Jacqueline Prawira and Jordan Prawira have raised the bar on achievement
Issue #104 • September 2022
By Sadia Khan - Mommy of Z kids
Jacqueline Prawira, 17
years old says:
I’ve grown up in Mountain
House for 15 years, beginning
my educational journey in Questa Elementary,
where I skipped kindergarten to attend 1st to 4th
grade, before moving to Altamont Elementary
School from 5th grade to 8th grade, then progressing
to Mountain House High School.
Now that I’ve graduated from high school, my
stay in Mountain House will be coming to a
bittersweet end as I am moving out to attend MIT
in Boston, Massachusetts for my undergraduate
studies.
Two award-winning teenage scientists from the same household are demonstrating
to the world how to solve problems thinking outside the box.
Jacqueline added, I am part of a family of 4,
consisting of my mom and dad, myself, and my
younger brother, Jordan. My dad works in finance
while my mom is a homemaker. In contrast,
Jordan and I are the first generation in our family
to pursue STEM in our college and career goals!
(STEM is an acronym for: Science, Technology,
schedules are packed with competitions interspersed
throughout the year, we make time to
cheering each other on in Taekwondo and Muay
Thai, or trying new foods at the Farmer’s Market!
Jacqueline is goal oriented and tells us about her
“The biggest environmental issues we face today—
climate change, plastic pollution, contamination of
our resources—stems from the wasteful nature of
modern-day convenience,” Jacqueline explains.
“My plan is to tackle these issues from the source
products—preventing accumulation of pollution
and enhancing sustainable use of resources for
generations to come,” she adds.
Prawira Siblings
continued from previous page
Brother, Jordan Prawira, is now 15
years old.
“I’ve lived in Mountain House for all
of my life,” he begins, “and started
school in Questa Elementary for
grades K-2, then moved to Altamont
Elementary to finish my elementary
and middle school education. I’m
currently a junior at Mountain House
High School.
“I live with my sister, mom, and dad.
My dad works in finance, and we
have a close-knit family dynamic,
doing various activities together. We
have an active lifestyle, as we’ve
trained in Taekwondo and Muay
Thai, bike together to the farmer’s
market, and have recently started
training as a family at CrossFit.”
Like his sister, Jordan has attained an amazing
number of competition awards and recognition.
“I’ve won various competitions all the way to the
international level for my engineering work on
various aerodynamic projects dealing with wind
turbines and fans for the past 9 years,” he states.
“I took 3rd place in the National 2019 3M Young
Scientist Challenge, winning a trip to the New York
Stock Exchange Closing Bell ceremony. I was also
selected as one of the 20 under-20 Young Innovators
in the Diversity Magazine, and one of the six
Standout Students in the San Joaquin Magazine.
I’ve consistently won first place in the SJCOE
STEAM Fair, and have medaled in places 1st to
4th every year in the California State Science and
Engineering Fair since 6th grade, for 5 years,” he
continues. “Additionally, I’ve won 2nd place two
times in a row in the Engineering and Sustainable
Design Category at the Regeneron International
Science and Engineering Fair, in 2021 and 2022.
My sister and I are the only two students at our
school to ever go to this competition.
“At the Regional Junior Sciences and Humanities
Symposium, I have place twice and was a finalist in
the National JSHS both times. I also have recently
won 3rd Place in the International Spellman Clean
Tech Competition with a prize of $3,500.
“I also placed in the top 25 nationwide in the Meteorology
and the Rocks and Minerals Science Olympiad
MySO events, and have a number of medals
across 8 years of Science Olympiad competitions,”
Jordan humbly states. “I have also won top prizes
at the SJCOE-hosted Academic Decathlon and
Pentathlon regional competitions, winning first
place medals in all events in 2022. In Altamont,
I was a top scorer in the Math Olympiad team.
“My plan is to implement my aerodynamic projects
for real-world use. For example, my low-cost air
purifier design that re-uses disposable face masks
can be used worldwide in emergency applications,
to help improve air quality in situations where filter
supplies are unavailable. My highly efficient wind
turbine design can be used in urban and suburban
settings to provide clean energy in a variety of
situations, even if wind speeds are low,” Jordan
explains.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5
years?
“In 5 years, I hope to be in a prestigious college for
my undergraduate studies, working in mechanical
or aerospace engineering to further my ideas and
improve them in real-world applications. Using
the knowledge I can learn from these studies, I
can improve the performance of my inventions and
optimize them to solve global issues.”
Your message to the youth of MH?
“Persevere through any difficulties. Pushing
through what seems difficult allows you to learn
and grow. Working hard allows you to make the
most out of what opportunities you’re given,
and open new ones for yourself, bringing you to
success.”
If you have to give one piece of advice to
teenagers to become the very best what
will it be?
“Pursue your ambitions. Hard work in your field
of interest can show you how much you’re capable
of. Continuing-on and continuously improving
yourself in these areas can bring you success.
Even if things don’t work at first, perseverance
and thinking from new perspectives can help you
perfect your skills or ideas.”
How do your parents feel about your amazing
achievements?
“Our parents are proud of our accomplishments,
as they can see us pursuing our fields of passion,
learning and growing, even though they aren’t
scientists and engineers themselves.”
I really enjoyed my conversation with Jacqueline and
Jordan. They are humble, dedicated and a powerhouse
of talent. Mountain House is proud to have them. We
wish them the very best in all their future endeavors.
The Causes and Health Effects
of Wildfires
Submitted by Aarya Vishnu
The Causes and Health Effects of Wildfires
California has been cursed with increasingly
vicious wildfires. Plagued with a dry climate,
densely forested regions, and seemingly endless
amounts of “once in a lifetime’’ droughts, California
has the perfect conditions for a wildfire to
start and spread.
When California
was significantly
more rural -
before 1800 - around
4.4 million acres of
land burned annually.
During this time,
California was considerably
more forested.
Even if this is
the case, with more
homes encroaching
on forested land,
fires are more deadly
today, burning 4.5
million acres of land in 2020.
These wildfires receive lots of attention, and
rightfully so. Yet one of the less discussed parts of
wildfires is the adverse health consequences. Wildfires
can release dangerous amounts of greenhouse
gases while significantly affecting air quality.
What Defines Air Quality?
Air quality is basically the measurement of the
purity/cleanliness of the air. The Air Quality
Index (AQI) is a measure of how polluted the air
currently is. The higher the AQI, the worse the
Air Quality. For example, an AQI of 28 would be
considered good while 128 would be unhealthy
for sensitive groups.
How Wildfires Affect Air Quality and
Health
According to Stanford Wildlife research, in an
area with an AQI of 150, If a person were to stay
outside the whole day, it would be equivalent to
smoking seven packs of cigarettes. That’s One
Hundred Forty cigarettes a day, just by breathing
in the air. Millions of Californians are exposed to
high concentrations of carbon dioxide as well as
black carbon (a black, soot-like material), methane,
and nitrous oxide. These particles could irritate
your sinuses, increase your heart rate, and induce
shortness of breath. Those with preexisting cardiovascular
or respiratory conditions are especially
at risk of developing serious symptoms when
breathing in the smoke.
17
How to Reduce Wildfires
Although there is no way to prevent all wildfires,
considering that they are a natural occurrence,
there are ways to prevent them from spreading.
The best way to prevent a small fire from forming
into conflagrations (or large fires) is by reporting
fires to the National Fire Information Center or
by calling 911.
The best way to outright prevent fires from starting
is by keeping sparks away from dry vegetation. Unattended
campfires that should have been properly
put out, or carelessly thrown out cigarettes that
should be properly disposed of, are some of the
most common causes of wildfires.
As the climate continues to worsen and as wildfires
are getting more dangerous, it is best to stay vigilant
to prevent these life-altering occurrences.
Congressman Josh Harder Touches on Tough Issues at Local Meet-Up
US Congressman, Josh Harder, came to town for a meet ‘n
greet style gathering at a Bethany Village home the afternoon
of Saturday, September 3. Jas and Pebble played hosts for the
by-invitation event. Some 30 people or so turned out to meet
the young Congressional Representative, in hopes of learning
more about him, and his positions on the issues.
Harder comes across as an everyday guy. Son of a farmer, he
was raised in Modesto, and now makes Tracy his home with
his wife and young children.
Following an extended mingling time, where the national
politician seemed most at home talking with neighbors and
guests, the proceedings moved into the adjacent room where
“Congressman Josh”, as people were calling him, dug deep
into issues of the day most affecting folks in the Central Valley.
He touched on and spoke intelligently on issues ranging from
water to transportation to healthcare, school safety, jobs and
bringing people together to solve these issues.
He took no swipes at opponents, although he was clear in pointing out political differences on the issues.
“Mountain House,” he said, “provides a good example of what’s going on all over the country -
GROWTH!”
He touted accomplishments such as the tripling of growth of summer school programs, thanks to the
American Rescue Plan passing.
He addressed the crazy commute. “100,000 people in our area who drive to the Bay Area for work,”
need some kind of relief, he said. He praised the planning work of the Valley Link Rail system, stating
that some $400 million in federal funding has been approved. While that’s not enough to cover the first
phase of the project, it goes a long way toward that goal. Plus, being in the pipeline for federal funding
could be advantageous moving forward.
“You can only add so many lanes (of highway) over the Altamont,” he said. In addition to making the
commute travel better, he said “We need to bring more jobs here, locally.
“Valley Link is an important game changer for our area,” he said, qualifying his statement with assurances
that he is not in favor of a high speed train connecting Merced to Bakersfield. “We need solutions for
people where they are, he said. Valley Link, he stated, is moving forward. It’s a top priority, he assured
everyone. “But, bringing more good paying jobs here will truly be a game-changer.”
Congressman Harder discussed plans in the works to effectively double the size and capacity of the Los
Vaqueros Reservoir system in the coming years. Water, he said. We must protect every last gallon. He
also said he is in favor of stopping boondoggle projects like the delta tunnel.
Harder stated that he is committed to remaining Independent, looking for the best ideas, with a local
focus. “To be effective /get stuff done,” he stated.
He closed stating that his goal is to build
an environment that serves bringing folks
together to get things done.
The Congressman kept his comments
brief, even while covering a lot of
ground, and answered numerous questions.
School safety was a big issue, and
he stated that he would be in favor of a
national ban on assault weapons.
Up close and personal meetings with
those who wish to represent us all can
really serve to provide a healthy dialog
where voices may be heard.
A good crowd of local folks came out to meet Congressman Harder
Mountain House Power Partners
Business Networking Group
Re-Launches at Town Hall
The “Mountain House Power Partners” Business Networking group has found a new home,
causing the intimate collection of business leaders to re-launch their charter BNI group.
“Coming out of the pandemic, we went from weekly Zoom meetings, to hybrids of
sometimes on Zoom and sometimes in person, to finally just meeting again in person
as safely as possible.
The Mountain House Fire Station Community Room was the default go-to for these
weekly meetings. Members of the group pushed to move to a newer facility, and one
with better wifi connection available.
The Library/Town Hall Community Room fits those goals. Starting with the first meeting
in September and moving forward, weekly morning gatherings from 9-10:30 a.m. will be
held at 201 E. Main St in the Mountain House Town Center. Each meeting is structured
and designed for all members to benefit by working together to help each other’s
businesses grow.
The BNI (Business Networking Int’l) program dictates that only one representative business
type may be included in the group. There are numerous groups outside of Mountain
House, so business owners interested in becoming involved may still likely do so, even if
their category is taken up in this chapter.
For more info, or to visit a meeting, reach out via Facebook, or email: mhppbni@gmail.com.

The MHHS Varsity Girls Tennis Team concluded their pre-season at an even 2-2, before starting the
regular season with big win, going 9-0 over Grace Davis, out of Modesto on August 31, 2022. It was
their first home regular season match, and the Mustangs rackets were as hot as the temperature - which
was in the high 90s. The Mustangs won 6 of the 9 matches with the score of 6-0, 6-0 and won the
overall team match 9-0.
Sophomore Akuokor Sai was the first
one off the courts and won the Player
of the Match award.
On August 23, the Mustangs traveled
all the way to Rocklin (2 hours away)
to take on the #1 team in the entire
Sac-San Joaquin section, the Rocklin
Thunder. Not only did Rocklin win
the Division 1 sectionals last year,
they also won in 2015 and 2018.
While Thunder dominated some
matches, the Mustangs (only in our
5th year of girls tennis) fought hard
and made it a very competitive match
losing 3-6 in blistering 100+ degree
temperatures. In fact, the Mustangs
were two (2) third set tie-breakers
away from an epic upset.
Sophomore Anya Palsson kicked off
the scoring by winning her match at
#5 singles 6-2, 6-4 and was awarded
Sophomore Akuokor Sai won the Player of the Match award against Grace Davis
the Player of the Match Award. Sophomore Anisha Pandey also won at #4 singles 7-6, 6-4.
After falling behind 2-4 in the team match, the Mustangs needed to win all 3 of the remaining matches
to score the upset. Sophomore twins Akweley and Akuokor Sai fought hard to come back from 1 set
down to take the match to a third set tie-breaker but lost a close one to the Thunder #1 doubles team.
Senior Jannat Baig and Junior Neha Bhaskarabhotla won their #3 doubles match in convincing fashion 6-1,
6-3. Even though the Thunder had clinched the victory 5-3 at that point, all eyes were on the #1 singles
match between the Mustang's Senior Captain Malvika Seth and the Thunder's #1 Erin Johnson. While
Seth played masterfully in the first set winning 6-4, Johnson battled back and dominated the second set
6-1. The third set tie-breaker was back and forth with several ties including at 6-6 and 7-7. In the end,
Johnson blasted a powerful forehand by Seth while leading 9-8 to clinch the 3rd set tie-breaker 10-8.
“While we did not win, I am proud of the way my players fought out there against the best team in the
entire section,” said Coach Su.
“I’m not too worried about wins and losses in the preseason. I only schedule matches against the
toughest schools in the section to give my team some good competition so they can be more prepared
for the regular season and playoffs” said Coach Su, in his 5th year as the Lady Mustangs head coach.

MHHS Girls Varsity Volleyball
1-0 to Start League Play
Volleyball is underway. Following a couple of hard fought non-league losses, League
Play has officially begun. The MHHS Varsity Girls Volleyball defeated the Grace
Davis Spartans 3-2 in their first league-play outing September 1.
With the win, the Mustangs upgrade their overall record to 1-2 on the year. The
Mustangs move forward to host Johansen (Modesto) facing the Vikings in a Western
Athletic Conference outing on Tuesday, September 6. The Vikings go into the
outing with a record of 2-4. Johansen lost 3-0 in their recent league outing against
Pacheco (Los Banos, CA)
Prior to this win, the Lady Mustangs had a very exciting “Foundation” Volleyball
game against Kimball High School August 25. Each set was very close in scoring,
and competitive play-wise. “All of the girls were excited and ready to play, especially
our Seniors,” Coach Michelle Laban said.
Senior and outside hitter Sariah Fobert led in serves with 4 aces and 6 kills. Her
defense was also on point picking up a lot of tough passes in the back row. Senior
and Middle blocker Cayla Alvarez led in attacks with 9 kills and 4 solid solo blocks.
Her line of defense in the middle was a great addition to our game last night.
“We have a lot of work to do these next 2 days in practice, but we are looking forward
to playing Kimball again this Thursday and taking the W!” head coach Laban stated.
The Mountain House Mustangs Varsity Football squad got off to
a fast start in their first game of the 2022 Season. The Mustangs
looked good in all phases of the game, putting up big numbers
on defense, offense, and special teams. All told, they defeated
Florin High School in South Sacramento 61-0 August 19, 2022.
“The Iron Horse defense played great, not allowing a single
first down,” stated third year head coach, Jabari Carr. “The top
performers included Senior Linebacker Orlando Syph-Timmons,
Junior Lineback Cedrick Major Jr., Defensive linemen include
Junior Nehmiah Williams, and Sophomore Defensive end Nasir
Campbell,” he added.
“With great defense comes good offense, The Horse Power
offense was headed by Junior quarterback Amare Brooks, with
top performers being Senior ATH Roy Gardner Jr., and Junior
Runningback Jake Fraizer,” he said.
And, “Specials teams newcomer, Montgomery Casey, had an
awesome night making 4 PAT's in his first ever Varsity football
game.”
The Mustangs brought their tough work ethic home to host
Weston Ranch Friday Aug 26th at Home. In a tightly fought
battle, the Mustangs came out on top, defeating the Weston Ranch
Cougars 26-20 in a non-league game.
