just planned to introduce digital

dentistry and laser dentistry. And in

COVID-19 pandemic, the team was

Overcoming the Adversities

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed

the most difficult challenge to the

world. Navneesh Dental Clinic also

faced difficulties during the pandemic.

In their war against the pandemic, they

utilized a state-of-the-art defence

system. They upgraded existing safety

protocols and introduced new methods

to eliminate the chances of infection.

Since lots of aerosols are generated

during treatments, the team had

imported extraoral suction to control

the aerosols during treatment. They

also used air purifiers with medicalgrade

HEPA filters to clean the air. This

helped to decrease the viral load in the

air.

How would you define a successful career? What

would you say is your biggest accomplishment?

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in

others’ service,” – said Mahatma Gandhi. The word

success can have many definitions; however, for me,

success is not a destination. It is a journey. The

journey to success starts with the proper focus and

mindset. In our noble profession, we are fortunate

enough to work on improving the health of our

patients and to spread smiles.

After all, a smile is a curve that sets everything

straight. Sometimes, the most significant

achievements can be all the trivial things that we

receive from our patients. The expression on the face

of our patients after a pain-free dental visit or the

smile and words of praise of our patients is equally

rewarding as a prestigious dental award received in

recognition of our arduous work.

COVID-19 has put additional responsibility on the

healthcare sector regarding telehealth trends,

hygiene, and safety precautions. How did you have

to adapt to these circumstances whilst preparing

and safeguarding your patients and staff for the

same? What new trends and technologies did you

incorporate for ensuring optimal knowledge

delivery?

During the ongoing pandemic, most healthcare

facilities had to adapt to ensure patients’ and

healthcare workers’ safety. At Pathodent Multispecialty

Dental Clinic, we had made a COVID safety

protocol keeping in mind all the updates received

from the national and international health-related

agencies and associations.

Regular temperature monitoring, hand sanitization

stations, mask-wearing protocols, PPE kits, Air

filtration systems, maintaining social distance (on an

appointment-only basis to avoid crowding), ensuring

all staff and patients are vaccinated and updated with

the trends were some of the safety precautions in

place.

Online/virtual consultations systems and follow-ups

were also done to ensure maximum safety for all our

patients and staff. Dr Vishal Punjabi has completed

extensive online courses on COVID-19 safety

protocols, which various national and international

organizations organized.

implantation, procedures, location of placement surgery,

Dr Pillai promises, "More than 12,000 implants have been

placed at our centre by now, and our immediate load

Costs of dental implants vary between Rs. 20,000 to Rs.

60,000 (per tooth), and one implant may hold more than

one tooth. The cost estimate can be provided only based on

the treatment plan for the patient, and the treatment plan, in

turn, is based on the digital OPG Xray (an Xray which

provides a clear idea about the status of the existing teeth,

jaws and jaw-joints) and the medical status of the patient.

Here, Dr Pillai explains, "We can certainly provide a

treatment plan with cost workouts for patients who provide

us with their digital OPG Xray as well as their medical

history. The patients with significant bone and gum loss

may need advanced techniques employing unique implant

designs including the zygomatic implants, which cost

slightly higher. These advanced techniques allow us to skip

bone graft surgeries altogether. Patients can bid goodbye to

dentures forever, no matter how much ever unfavorable

their dental status might be."

The cost of dental Implants in Smile Centre India is more

affordable than in other western countries such as Europe,

the UK, Northern America, and Australasia, and lower than

in Southeast Asian countries like China, Indonesia, Japan,

Korea, and Singapore.

The time taken for the treatment is usually one week. "We

have patients from all these countries, and their

testimonials say the expenses incurred in the entire travel

for the dental implants in Smile Centre India is nearly 30%

of dental implant cost in their states.”

Dr Pillai says "The pre-procedure visit is for consultation

with our dentist and a clinical examination, OPG and

CBCT (3D) imaging at our centre. In this visit, we clearly

evaluate the status of existing teeth and jawbones, followed

by clinical evaluation and finalization of the treatment

plan."

Typically, it can take one hour for a single implant, while

multiple implant placement takes two to three hours.

"We will also be taking you through relevant presentations

detailing the implant treatment procedures during this visit,

after which we will be able to answer your questions about

the procedures.”

Compromised teeth can also be extracted at the same time

that the implants are placed for added convenience.

"After the treatment plan is finalized, you must have a

medical exam by a physician at the hospital attached to our

centre to certify your fitness for dental implant surgery

under local or general anesthesia.”

The Strategic Implant is the Future

The Strategic, Cortico Basal Implant concept of Dr Ihde,

the chairman of the International Implant Foundation,

Germany, has a very strong scientific base involving scores

of scientific research papers being published to support this

novel system. Swiss, German, Czech and Italian engineers

and scientists, under the guidance of Prof Ihde, have been

manufacturing these implants following stringent guidelines

and scientific formulae.

This highly specialized implantology system works

exceptionally well even in "no-bone" patients; the implants

can be loaded immediately (teeth fixed within a matter of

hours of implantation). These implants can offer solutions

for patients who are not fit to receive the conventional two

or three-piece dental implants.

The implants that Prof Ihde has devised are of varying

lengths, diameters, and designs so that they can be perfectly

sized to fit the available bone in every patient, thereby

helping to avoid undesired bone grafting/augmentation

procedures including "sinus lifts." Thus, the treatment turns

much faster, less invasive, and quite affordable.

Finally, Dr Pillai concludes, "Our experience with

thousands of implant operations and case observations

clearly shows that Cortico Basal Strategic implants are

reliable as natural teeth in adult patients."

and technologies did you incorporate for ensuring

COVID has taught us two things:

1. To value lives and to value your loved ones.

2. Nothing is constant as the “New Normal” keeps

evolving.

So, from treating front line workers like policemen, nurses,

BMC workers and emergency appointed patients in the first

lockdown with just three ply masks and surgical gowns

(even before PPEs were introduced) to full-fledged

protocols as laid down by OSHA and CDC, we have come a

long way and seen a lot of cases not worrying about our

health and putting our families at risk too.

To date, we take every individual as an asymptomatic

COVID carrier. So, the care and precautions are at the peak

since we take responsibility for our staff, who trust us and

our safety protocols.

Yes, we did have a lot of virtual consults: but being a dental

specialist, we have to work in the mouth - which can’t be

virtual. So, we have to keep the fight going and continue

delivering the best treatment based on our skills and

expertise.

We have introduced a lot of digital gadgets at our centres to

make it a hassle-free experience for our patients - even for

dental treatment planning and execution: so, a lot has

changed thanks to COVID, even on the positive aspect.



This is the best time to be in dentistry: I say this to my

friends in the dental profession.

And for the rest of my non-dental friends and colleagues, as

long as you remain on this planet earth, your teeth should

remain. For that, you must make sure the health and

hygiene measures are in line with the recommended

So, whether someone uses a manual toothbrush or an

electric toothbrush, he needs to brush twice a day.

Whether someone uses dental floss or water floss, he/she

still need to floss once a day.
