Nowadays, whenever the name

diamond comes into clients' minds, they

think of Kolhapur and Mahendra

Jewellers. We are becoming synonymous

with Diamonds


o you know how the most precious Jewells, Gems,

DDiamonds, Rubies and costliest metals like Gold,

Silver, Chrome, and Platinum are hiding beneath

the earth's crest?

Ancient people believed that these are the timeless seeds of

our galaxy's brightest, ever-glowing, starry Sun God, who

sowed them into the planet earth to be found by the future

generations of Sun God worshippers.

According to these Sun God-worshipping ancestors, the

deity also set the rules for the finders. Every generation

must work hard, earn their treasure with ethics, ingenuity,

and innovation, and upgrade their material and mental

wealth by changing old things and constantly adding

something anew. That is the only way to keep the deriving

value from this treasure of Jewells' timeless wisdom.

Innately knowing this automatically without being told, as

if the story was transmitted to his unconscious mind by

birth, Mehul Oswal, the fourth generational treasurer and

Director of Mahendra Jewellers from Kolhapur began his

entrepreneurial journey from the bottom instead of from

atop, as is the case with ninety-nine per cent others.

Inherent Legacy of Values and Principles

Mehul conveys, "We have a legacy of 117 years in the

jewellery industry. Our great grandfather was one pioneer in

expanding the jewellery business in Kolhapur. So, I am the

fourth generation in the jewellery business. The inspiration

was always in my blood from my childhood days." True to

his inherent legacy, Mehul used to visit the store and

observe everything keenly from his childhood days, he used

to go to the showroom in summer vacation.

And though from that young age, Mehul realized that he

was born with a golden spoon in his mouth, later on, when

he began his own ascent, he did it by keeping that golden

spoon out of his mouth.

Mehul shares, "I knew we as a family are sitting on a

legendary treasure grown into this brand of Mahendra

Jewellers by my great grandfather, grandfather, my father,

and uncles, including our traditional exports as well.

However, I began my learning from the basics. First thing, I

noticed that our brand has excellent potential. We have the

legacy of the brand name. So, as a new generation, I felt I

should do something, bring in some change, some upgrade

like creativity, innovation or new trends, anything.”

Thus, after completing his education in 2009, Mehul joined

the family business, not as an owner but as a lowly

salesman. He began attending to clients coming to his

jewellery showroom. And he kept interacting with his sales

team and his clients to learn about the process and

expectations of customers. And he began his research and

analysis that what was Mahendra Jewellers' potential as a

brand in the Kolhapur city? What was the buying potential

of the people of the city? And what difference he could

make?

For example, the brand name of Mahendra Jewellers was

well known for its antique golden, temple, and Kundan

jewellery. Mehul says, "This has been our strength like

customization of these types of traditional jewellery, but not

Diamonds. The diamond section was a very small portion

of our showroom. So I focused on Diamonds.”

The Kohinoor of Kolhapur

Mehul decided to find out the reasons behind this factor so

that he could expand his Diamonds section. And he saw that

even people from Kolhapur used to travel all over India to

buy diamond jewellery. They used to go to metro cities like

Puna, Mumbai, Delhi, or Bangalore but would not purchase

it from Mahendra Jewellers; why? This made Mehul

curious. And he decided to change this trend.

Mehul remembers, "To change the trend, I must know the

trend. I must understand the market. Hence, I started

visiting national shows like international jewellery shows in

India. The top ten shows. After that, I visited the Hong

Kong, China, Singapore, and Dubai shows. And I began

grasping the nit-bits from the market, what was going on in

the world. And how I can present this to the Kolhapur

people. From the bottom-most point of view, That was my

first lesson learned that be a humble learner, then only you

will know what is going on.”

Always keep a

learning attitude;

whether you have

20 or 50 years of

experience,

learning should

never stop

With the new learning came new strength, knowledge, and

confidence to build a team that can showcase what this new

generation can do to the Kolhapur city people. "And I knew

our potential and strength, which the Kolhapur people

trusted. Slowly, I started organizing three to four HNI

special exhibitions every year, where we welcomed people

to participate in any of the special outdoor exhibitions.

There I used to present new and trending jewellery. And I

focused on diamonds. For us, the diamond was a big task in

Kolhapur. The old mindset was diamonds won't go well in

Kolhapur. Don't take interest. That was the senior's mindset.

Uncle used to say, "Kolhapur and diamonds won't go." But

I had complete confidence in the Kolhapur people. What's

the potential of Kolhapur? I know these people go out of

Kolhapur to buy not only diamonds but imported cars and

diamond jewellery too. And Kolhapur has the records of

buying these things.”

The Golden Vision

Kolhapur's per capita income, its ranking, area-wise, was

first or second highest. Thus observed Mehul with his

golden vision, and to change the age-old mindset, he

combined advanced technology with jewellery exhibitions.

He kept launching new exclusive diamond jewellery year

after year in Kolhapur by inviting prime, VIP, and HNI

clients, getting huge responses and grand success in 2015-

16. Mehul showed his seniors the results on paper and

convinced them to change their traditional mindset that

diamond jewellery won't go well in Kolhapur.

Mehul proclaims, "And today, I would like to say that the

Mahendra Jewellers brand is known for its diamonds, along

with its silver, gold, platinum, and other classic jewellery.

Whenever the name diamond comes into clients' minds,

they think of Kolhapur and Mahendra Jewellers. We are

becoming synonymous with Diamonds."

Also, Mahendra Jewellers are getting popular because of

their speciality of customization like diamond iPhones,

branded diamond watches, and diamond ornaments. "I

launched a diamond iPhone around 2015. It was a perfect

publicity event. And we as a brand were recognized not

only in Kolhapur but all around the globe.”

Although, again, convincing his seniors was not easy.

However, Mehul, with a golden vision set on the future and

Sun God's story stirring in his unconscious mind, succeeded

against all the odds and completely transformed the brand

of Mahendra Jewellers by taking it to the next level.

In the League of Royals

Every year, Mehul kept launching such types of products,

such as accessories, phones, watches, sunglasses, specs,

gold specs, diamond specs, uncut jewellery, and Diamond

Polki jewellery by specializing and customizing them. It

took Mehul around five to seven years to turn around the

diamond category with his experience, surveys, lot of travel

where he kept attending other multiple shows. Mehul's

hard work, risk, and daring paid off, as people, including

royal, prime and VIP families, who were going outside the

city for a diamond or other jewellery began preferring

Mahendra Jewellers. Thus Mahendra Jewellers became the

family jeweller of the people of Kolhapur.

Yet, Mehul, keeping the Kolhapur's royal background,

culture and the blessing of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj alive

in his soul, is humble enough to attribute all of his success,

each of his achievements to his ancestral legacy of fathers,

grandfathers, and great grandfathers who treated their

customers as Gods. Mehul expresses, "This is the ancient

legacy of ethics, trust, quality control, craftsmanship,

innovations, creativity, varieties, and different classes of

design, and the warm relations with our peoples, customers

and society. This is what we have in our blood, our spirit

that we have to always work with ethics and innovation.

This is our positive strength, our very backbone.”

Even today, after so much success and achievement Mehul

never stops but keeps attending to all of his clients

personally. And clients, too, have so much trust and

bonding with Mehul that they take an appointment and call

him whenever they wish to buy any kind of jewellery.

Mehul reflects, "People's faith in us is our greatest

achievement. Such achievement never comes from

marketing gimmick, paid advertising, or fake show-off.

Today, not only Kolhapur people but clients across the

globe, whenever they land in India, they plan to visit

Kolhapur and Mahendra Jewellers. So we have national as

well as global recognition and presence.”

The Book of Raining Wisdom

Mehul's advice for the budding aspirants who are willing to

venture into the jewellery industry is a book of raining


wisdom. "As per my past 12, 13 years' experience in

business, I would like to say that instead of relying on

ancestral or family fortune, you must work hard on your

own, be ethical in all your business dealings, and never stop

learning. It is never late or enough to learn new things. You

must have a learning attitude."

"Never think that I have a good, big brand or a good

backup. Time changes. It would help if you always

upgraded with time, whether it is a designing part,

technology, etc. You must adopt that change."

"We have a strong presence over here, but with time, we

always upgraded our showroom interior-wise, hospitalitywise,

because it is the demand of time. We have to change.

Keep on changing our business pattern."

“If you don't change with time, you will be outdated. In

today's competitive, one-touch access to everything,

customers are smarter and do their own research before

buying. They have impulses and abundant choices;

however, they have an already fixed mindset of "I want to

buy this. I want this jewellery. And I want to customize it

this way.”

And to cope with them, you should know every info related

to the industry you are in. You must know your industry in

and out. You can not only rely on your father or ancestors'

earnings, fortune, and goodwill. If you don't have enough

education and practical knowledge, you will not succeed in

the long run. So, always keep a learning attitude; whether

you have 20 or 50 years of experience, learning should

never stop."

“Value the time. Value your team. And one more thing I

must mention. Your health is important as well. It would

help if you gave your time, like morning time, at least one

hour or whatever you can give, to your mental health and

physical fitness. If you are mentally and physically fit, you

can do anything. You can work hard. You can work

efficiently. After I wake up at around 6:00 AM, I give my

morning time, one to two hours, to my physical fitness and

mental health, whether it is yoga, gym, meditation, or

spiritual thing. This is one thing many people forget to give

time to their fitness. And at an early age struggles with

anxiety, mental exhaustion and depression. So in the

morning, please give one hour to yourself, your fitness. I

am myself a fitness freak. For the last 15 to 18 years, I have

been giving my morning time to myself. That is most

important. The rest of the 18 hours working is yours. How

you make it productive, that's up to you.”

“That is how we became the first silver hallmarking license

holder in India. And we are an ISO 9001 company. Also, we

and later all Mehul's seniors trusted him and wholly handed

over the reins of Mahendra Jewellers to him. They never

Mehul envisions, "We plan to keep on expanding to serve

better and best. Naturally, we are very aggressive in

designing lab. Right now, we are working in an entirely

Anand. please tell us about the saga of inQsights since

its inception.

As an idea, inQsights started taking shape sometime around

2017-18, when we (at Inqubex) found ourselves working on

several productivity improvement assignments, all of which

entailed a certain amount of data analysis and visualization.

Working with an Analyst across the different projects, we

toyed with the idea of automating the analysis in a manner

that would be fungible across organizations. Though we

brainstormed a bit, the flood of projects meant we got

pulled into more immediate priorities, and this idea

remained dormant till we, like the rest of the world, were

shaken up by COVID-19.

The pandemic and the resulting lockdown gave us a

moment to reflect on our organizational journey and pushed

us to think more actively about enhancing our consulting

offerings with the power of technology. From there, it was

an incredible adventure with its fair share of highs and lows

till we got in place a suite of HR Tech tools early this year

and went live with inQsights.

Tell us about your source of inspiration behind

venturing into the business arena?

Well, I called myself a fossil at Inqubex, the parent

Consulting firm behind inQsights, having joined it back in

2013. The challenge of building a new business from

scratch, that too in the exciting HR Tech space, was too

interesting to pass!

What were the initial challenges that you had to

surmount to ensure inQsights' success rate reached

greater heights?

The first challenge was internal for me—the shift from a

Consulting mindset—where the answer to most answers is

‘It depends’ to a more productized and scalable construct,

took some effort. That bridge, however, was more or less

crossed in the course of the product development.

Our strong experience base, which forms the basis for the

tech portfolio, together with the space we have left for tool

customization and configuration for unique client needs,

gives me the confidence to pitch our HR Tech solutions to

organizations across sectors.

What professional values and qualities do you think

your clients value in you and inQsights the most?

What are the USPs that highlight inQsights' uniqueness

in the Human Resource Management sector?

Firstly, inQsights offers an array of easy-to-deploy, cloudbased

click – of course, with tonnes of hard work and some

sleepless nights to make things interesting.

How do you envision your company's operations with

the emerging technologies and automated tools that are

revolutionizing the business world by enabling

innovations?

inQsights itself aims to make data and technology a more

active part of a function that has traditionally lagged on this

front. Technology is a great enabler; however, I don't see it

as driving innovation in isolation or replacing human

intelligence anytime soon. We still need smart practitioners

to derive maximum impact from the technology. I am

fascinated at the potential of what can be achieved when

HR Tech-enabled insights meet HR practitioners with the

skill and will to make things happen. It's a great time to be

part of this journey!

I think clients like us for our straight-talking and

implementation-focused approach to partnership. As

Vista Visado has always been a firm of

‘To the people and For the people.’

After the launch, it was not a great

success, and it was not easy to be. But

our clients who trusted us with our

work helped us boost our firm and

stand a storm in the world of

immigration.

Vista is just not a company but a fruit

of the hard work of my very productive

and loyal colleagues and supporters.

Since it started in 2019, it has been

through many ups and downs, but it’s a

very successful and beautiful journey

with each day learning a new thing. We

are blessed to connect with immigrants

as family and will try and focus on

building more healthy and valuable

relations with our clients ahead.

What was your inspiration behind

venturing into the business arena?

This is my favourite question; I just

love this part of my life. When you

have decided on your goals, you work

for them, or you plan how to make

your goal a success. I was completely

unaware of where I wanted to be and

what I wanted to do in future.

During my very early age as a teen, I

was aware that I just needed to

complete my studies–graduation–and

would get married, and life would be

fantastic, you know, like a fairy tale.

So gradually, after completing it, I

moved to Ludhiana, Punjab, because of

my family’s wish. Which I think now

was the best decision made by them for

me. While travelling interstate,

exploring and enjoying things to the

fullest, I realised that travelling might

be my career ahead.

I gave interviews in many companies,

but in Punjab, the mentality is that you

aren’t suitable to work in Punjab if you

are not Punjabi. I was rejected more

than 40 to 60 times in my interviews

just because I was a Maharashtrian and

horrible, but as we say, not all five

today. I had to face my family in

starting the firm, which was against my

choose a government job or join

politics which was never my thing.

Talking about the market, building

your own brand’s mark was quite the

most challenging task. Because there

were already established firms in the

market that were very impressive and

great going, to set a benchmark on that

was a bit harder but not impossible.

Steadily we kept working, and hard

work paid off; we were successfully

established with the trust of our clients

and our entire client-centric process.

most?

The primary thing they value is the

correct and proper counselling

provided to them on time. They do not

have to pay any extra or hidden

relationship you build and improve

upon your qualities. We never believed

It was started long back in 2000 by me along with my

mother Mrs Rupali Baruah Das. Since then, my role as an

educator and counsellor has evolved over the years. And the

experience was great because every time we get new

listeners, a new environment, different schools and

sometimes the same schools. Beyond this, we do a face-toface

session with most of the students and try to know their

problems and give the best solution by measuring their

potential with the psychometric test, questionnaire and

different activities where we try to take 360-degree views of

the peer group etc.

What was your inspiration behind venturing into the

business arena?

My Mom who wants to prove something worth doing as we

are the first in our family to start a social business. It was

her brainchild and back in 1990 she was the First lady

we had formed our organization and now it is 2022 almost

32 years for my Mom and 22 years for me. We continuously

work in this field in all four seasons and have different

branches in different parts of Assam.

Apart from my mother, my father – Late Kulendra Das –

Former Assistant Conservator of Forest and a Class-1

Gazetted Officer of Assam Government and in his memory,

we have launched one of our firms KEF – Kulendra Das

Educational Foundation – where we provide scholarships

to meritorious and financially backward students with all

feasible help from our end.

And my third inspiration is my grandfather – Late Radhika

Ram Das – Former Education Minister of Assam and

Freedom Fighter of India, Tamra Patra Awardee from

Prime Minister of India, Principal of University law

College and Dean of Faculty of Law of Gauhati University,

Guwahati.

What were the initial challenges that you had to

surmount to ensure your business's success rate reached

greater heights?

Many like – financial competition, surrounded by negative

thinking people always try to demotivate you but we had

trust in ourselves. My mom always says to me, son when

defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans were not

sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward

your coveted goal.

I follow this mantra every day. That is how we have

reached millions of people through our various foundations.

While we set up the business, it was a challenging time with

the outbreak of COVID-19. There was a complete

lockdown with high needs for healthcare in both B2B and

B2C segments worldwide. The topmost challenge was

recruiting relevant folks.

Human Resource is a challenging profession. Apart from

choosing the right talent for the specific job, an HR

professional also needs to train and develop new workers,

engage them, resolve legal hassles faced by the company

and ensure a high level of productivity.

As a Senior People Officer at Vamstar, I wanted to appoint

employees who believed in the vision. If you look at the

traditional hiring practices, you tend to recruit people who

can perform their jobs well.

It was not possible virtually. I firmly believe that in order to

find like-minded people, you need to meet them and spend

quality time with them instead of a zoom video interview. It

was deep tricky to match up to working from home,

connecting with people in different time zones and making

blind choices.

We are lucky to have found the initial set of the first 25

employees who were brilliant and compatible.

Together with our efforts, we scaled up the business not just

in the United Kingdom but in India, the United States, the

Middle East, and Europe. Today we have more than 150

The journey till date was amazing but filled with many ups

and downs; going through all the odds, we are able to reach

over. We are still growing and passing through various

phases, learning new things, experiencing exploring and

evolving, We believe in chemical-free products, our

products are freshly made using Vedic techniques, coldpressed,

stone grounded and are made in small batches to

maintain freshness. It was a task to create an acceptance for

our products in the competitive market , making people

aware about the benefits of our products, making them

understand the USP, it was after a journey of almost 12/14

After my postgrad when I was able to visit my native place

and spend some time with the locals I was able to

understand their food habits and their lifestyle. And I came

to know that not only the fresh air but the healthy foods that

Their day-to-day diet contained all the superfoods which

are not adulterated and are fresh farm foods based on the

since its inception.

The Holiday Navigator was started with a lot of passion and

an aim to create a brand that offers affordable and hasslefree

vacations. We have achieved that with our sincere

efforts and diligence and are confident to continue doing the

same. We consider each holiday special and work on it with

the same vigour, which has been our strong point. What

started as help planning the holidays for families and

friends is now a full-time business.

Today, we have created a good customer base, including

corporate companies, institutions, and business owners.

Although the idea of travel is fun, planning and arranging

the same needs meticulous planning, which is not as much

fun. We are a team of young individuals who personally

love travelling, and so we connect well with our clients'

needs and help make their vacation much more enjoyable.

What was your inspiration behind venturing into the

business arena?

Being an MBA graduate, I always wanted to start

something of my own but never had clarity on when and

how. I love my job and enjoy planning vacations, and as

soon as I saw the scope of venturing into it as a business, I

took the initiative. After necessary research and planning, I

still was not ready somehow, being from a family who was

never in the field of business. I had support from my family,

which was an added advantage.

Being a young mom, I wanted to be available for my little

one even when working, and I knew a regular office going

job would not be able to give me the luxury of using my

time as I would prefer. As the saying goes, 'It is easier said

than done,' creating something on your own is lot more

challenging, and managing it every day is not easy. After

much deliberation, I took the leap of faith and started my

company. Today, I know a lot of women in different areas

of field, friends and acquaintances who are running

successful businesses. I take inspiration from them and

make efforts to develop my own business.

so patience is a critical factor. Be open to criticism and

constantly work towards developing or improving your

products or services for your clients. This will help you

with immense patience and perseverance, nothing is

impossible, big or small. Not the business they are

doing or the aim they are going to accomplish.

The rising tale of a humble middle-class family to

becoming Freshy, North-East India's successful, favourite

and popular home-grown flagship brand of a hundred

crore, offering a fresh, natural, organic, healthy, tasty and

original range of freshly made fruit juices, pickles, sauces,

jams, and snacks, is a testament to the fact that Fortune

favours those who decide to make their own fortune.

Established in 2005, Freshy is the brand of food products

from S.M. Commotrade Pvt. Ltd.

As it happened with Prakash Goduka – now only 38 and

yet the Managing Director of SM Group of Companies,

back in 2005, when he along with his younger brother

Bikash Goduka visited an exhibition in Guwahati. Prakash

recollects that while roaming around the huge exhibition, he

came upon a huge crowd gathered around a small stall.

Curious he investigated and saw to his amazement that

people were gathered there to drink Lychee juice sold

cheaply by a Bangladesh-based company showcasing its

products at the exhibition. When Prakash himself tasted the

drink, an idea came to him as, to why no one from India

could think of a drink made of Lychee? "But since I could

think of it, then we as in family could definitely do it,"

thought Prakash.

Surmounting the Adversities

He discussed this idea with his father RK Goduka and

Brother Bikash Goduka, all living in Guwahati as a joint

family and surviving by selling 3000-4000 KG processed

tea to tea stall owners every month – again an idea of

Prakash, both the brothers were studying in college but had

to work harder since their family shifted their base from

Sivasagar to Guwahati.

"Those three-four years from 2002 to 2005 were the real

hardship. But I never felt down, as we were a family, and we

were together and we survived the hardship by selling

processed tea before the Freshy idea struck me and my

father and brother supported me in that," tells Prakash.

Freshy Inception of Ideas

The family from their own reserve and by taking loan from

friends & relatives – and set up a ready-to-drink orange

squash and lychee juice unit in a rented 3000 Sq ft area in

the Guwahati itself. Immediately the trio commenced their

marketing to food suppliers and technologists so that they

could launch their product. Prakash adds, "We recruited ten

people and began our company with an initial goal of doing

at least 50 to 60 lakh rupees business in our first year."

To achieve it Prakash and the family appointed distributors

in Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur. They also began

visiting distributors and shop owners to market their

products. Soon they began receiving tremendous responses

because "The quality of our products is top-notch. With

Freshy, we make North-East's favourite range of pickles,

fresh juices, jams, sauces and more — we bring the

celebration of taste with the freshness and health of fruits

and vegetables," reveals Bikash.

Expanding the Horizons

The response was so huge that with Freshy, SM Group did

a roaring business of two – two and a half crore rupees in

just a year, "Surpassing all our expectations. And we knew,

that if we maintain the quality and freshness of our products

intact, we could expand the brand. And during the last two

decades, we did just that," shares Prakash.

Without looking back, the trio bought a huge plot of 57,000

Sq ft in Guwahati and expanded the plant by 2006.

"Encouraged by our father, the Chairman of SM Group,

we immediately expanded our product line to pickles,

sauces, jams, vinegar, other fruit juices and fresh food

items," states Prakash.

In 2009 SM Group have been contracted by a leading

Indian F&B brand Britania to manufacture and pack its

cleaning processes ensure that only the best enters the next

stage of processing.

With investments in technology and machines, Prakash and

the team ensure that every aspect of the processing

including water sources, pulping, mixing, and cutting up to

packaging and storing of various products is done in a dust

and adulteration-free environment. Prakash says, "Our

inspection processes involve the most stringent of quality

measures to ensure that only what's worth being called a

'Freshy' product reaches out to the consumers."

The Spirit of Excellence

popular biscuit brand 'Rusk, "Which we continued till 2013,

after which we commenced manufacturing and exporting

similar biscuits to Gulf Countries," says Prakash.

Post that, the company expanded into packaged drinking

water and also set up an additional fresh juice

manufacturing plant having a 1000 liters per hour capacity

in 2013 itself. By 2015 SM Group's turnover was hovering

over 20 crore rupees with an employee strength of 100.

Today, The company, with its vast and highly advanced

processing and packaging units offers a range of food and

allied products to consumers across the key locations in the

North-East of India. High on quality and taste, Freshy

products are trusted and loved by consumers across age

groups.

creating concepts that elevated brand experiences for

clients with the hunt for talent that was passion-driven and

real about making moments matter with the team. Gravity

later elevated touching heights of success only because of

After over a decade of conceptual growing into a Fivemillion-dollar

company, the GC saga sings tales of trust,

What was your inspiration behind venturing into the

business arena?

The inspiration comes from life, its lessons, its learning,

and its tests; at 23, my father fuelled my dreams of doing

something substantial with super cool support and freedom

of getting out there and getting it done. Pessimistic about

procrastination, his words just ignited my innate need to

explore, expand and experience, which has truly made me

the exciting ball of energy, I am today.

There onwards, the inspiration grew with the need to

explore how we could touch the hearts and lives of our

customers, via the brands, with experiences that fit the

current times and trends. With 25 MNCs within the first year

and a turnover of one million dollars by our second year of

conception, Gravity Concepts was also one of the few who

played it large in 2020, with 300 virtual events that allowed

the pandemic to become our space to bloom and blossom –

our intention, we raised the bar with our concepts that

varied from on-ground to virtual and today, into the

hybrid spheres.

started BOYOG- Be On Your Own Guestlist, in 2022, with

my experience in the events services management industry.

The app allows party lovers to browse through the best

upcoming events in their hometown or when travelling. We

offer them the easiest way to access the guest list, purchase

tickets and reserve bottle services.

What was your inspiration behind venturing into the

business arena?

I think this is quite an unorganised sector. Youngsters are

often unaware of the locations of exciting nightlife events

happening around. Also, there is a lack of use of modern

technology in nightlife entertainment, as tickets get booked

manually. A lot of time is wasted in manual bookings of

tickets which often results in long queues outside clubs and

events. All these problems inspired me to establish a

platform that can satisfy every party enthusiast's needs.

What initial challenges you have to surmount to ensure

BOYOG's success rate reaches greater heights?

Well, we are about to launch a start-up with our platform in

July. That in itself is going to be challenging. In the past,

BOYOG has successfully done events in the pre-COVID

era.

Xebia's General Manager and Region Head, Shankar

Garg fast grasped this scenario and quickly transformed the

company into IT Architects. Today, by helping his client,

Shankar is creating digital leaders.

In a candid discussion with Insights Success, Shankar

elaborated on this visionary change which led to Xebia's

present accomplishments. That awe-inspiring interview is

given herein.

Please tell us about the saga of your reputed business

since its inception.

As an organization, we started as a group of senior

architects who were helping some of the largest banks in

Europe with their architecture strategies. Around two

decades back, we were doing majority assessment scans on

architectures for banks which were primarily monolithic at

that time. We were helping them move away from

monolithic architectures to much more granular, or

basically smaller, architectures.

That's how, initially, the company name also had IT

architects in it. And, once we presented our findings about

these maturity assessments and transformation plans, clients

liked them a lot. But, about two decades back, none of our

customers had the bandwidth or the skill sets to implement

the transformation plans we recommended. That's why, they

said they liked our plan and they really wanted to

implement it. They asked us why we did not help them

implement it and that's how the entire IT services

organization was born and that's how we are into this IT

consulting services business.

What was your inspiration behind venturing into the

business arena?

When we started around two decades back, there were

many closed-box technologies, like Oracle and so on. They

were doing great progress, but we thought there are so

many open-sourced technologies, like Java, and Java was

our proven bet. So, we went ahead with Agile and Java as

the two core mainstream service lines for our business.

The inspiration that we fundamentally believed was that

instead of working in a Water fallish manner, where the first

product reaches business stakeholders at least a year later, it

is best for everyone that small glimpses of the product reach

business stakeholders within the first two weeks after they

give us the requirements. And at that time, we thought this

was going to phenomenally change the way IT services

companies work.

The second inspiration was that we felt that instead of

working with these closed-boxed technologies, it would be

better to work with Java — which was an open-source and

also free — and other related technologies which were also

free. So, we reduced the overall IT project development

cost.

To sum it up, we now had the ability to deliver every two

weeks on an open-source platform. And we also reduced the

time to market and reduced the overall development cost —

these were the two main inspirations for getting into this

business.

What were the initial challenges that you had to

surmount to ensure your business's success rate reached

greater heights?

At Xebia, we picked up Agile methodologies and, at that

time, 99% of the projects were going on in the Waterfall

methodologies. As everyone knows by now, Agile is not

only about project management—it is all about a mindset,

people's behaviour and the processes we work on. It also

involves the technology making it an overall game-changer.

Thus, at that time, we not only had to win a particular

customer but also had to win a customer against the most

popular software development methodology. So, it was

Waterfall versus Agile.

We had to first help people understand the pitfalls of

Waterfall and then teach them how to work in a new, much

more incremental way. That was the biggest challenge we

faced at that time—first, helping people change their

mindsets and making them understand that there was a

better way to work, a better way to collaborate and a better

way to reduce time to market.

What professional values and qualities do you think

your clients value in you and your company the most?

Our values define quality without compromise and connect

with the customer. The very first thing our customers expect

is quality without any compromise. There are many times

when customers push us to deliver something faster than it

really can be delivered. But, when we make them

understand that, if they try to do this, we would, probably,

have to cut corners, skip some unique SKCs etc. and they

do understand. We explain to them that today, we might

deliver sooner. But, if we do it without quality, it has to be

revisited anyway. So, it is better to do it right the first time

around. With all my experience at Xebia, I have seen that

our customers appreciate this fact and, many times, we help

them appreciate that quality without compromise is our

topmost priority.

The second thing that customers really like about us is our

connect with them; we understand their challenges wearing

their hats and analyzing situations from their perspective.

We hand-hold them through the process and extend the

required support. That connection between our

techies/consultants and the customer is where we win the

real challenges.

What are the USPs that highlight your brand/company's

uniqueness in the industry you are catering to?

Our unique strength lies in our people. As an organization,

we want to be recognized as thought leaders in areas that

we work on. To achieve this, we continuously hire

exceptional people. We strive to innovate in everything we

do and ride the latest technology wave. We encourage our

employees to learn new technologies, write a lot of blogs

and books and participate in hackathons.

technologies in a better way. So, that is where our

As an experienced professional, what would you like to

advice the budding aspirants willing to enter the

business world?

This is my advice to the people I'm training in business

right now. When one is fresh out of college, either technical

courses or business programs, one tends to focus primarily

on only one of the techniques. As coders, we basically tend

to focus on the technology and, as business graduates, we

tend to focus only on the business solutions.

My suggestion to them would be to focus on three

things—people, process and technology. Irrespective of

whether you have a technical background or business, we

are all humans first. In whatever we do, whatever solutions

we bring, nowadays, most of the users' journey—for bank,

for retailers and for everything—is purely digital.

How you introduce empathy in any process or workflow is

very important because we are moving more towards the

digital world. Basically, we are interacting less with people

and our main medium of interaction is, probably, the mobile

app or the user interface we have built. So, how you

introduce empathy in that entire workflow and how you

collaborate with your colleagues is extremely important.

Then comes the process and the simpler it is, the better.

Many a time, we come across applications and programs

built in the process that become so complicated over a

period of time that, sometimes, we need to look at things in

a much simpler way. So, simplicity wins.

The next is technology. For technology graduates, I suggest

that they not only focus on technology, but also understand

how Agile works because, a lot of times, we see that when a

person is working individually, s/he is brilliant in terms of

coding. But, when put in a team, it becomes difficult for

them to collaborate. That's where the challenge comes in.

So, for coders, learning about collaboration and Agile is

more important and, for business graduates, learning about

technology—having a basic overview of how technology

works, how the software development lifecycle goes and

what the latest technologies are—these are equally so. How

can one mix one's business processes with technological

advancements? That's where we feel fresher's should be

trained.

How do you envision Xebia's operations with the

emerging technologies and automated tools that are

revolutionizing the business world by enabling

innovations?

I believe advancements in technology and entire AI or

automation will help people focus on what they do

best—innovate. For instance, right now, we have a fully

automated process of reimbursements. There are many

people within the administration and finance teams who

have saved hundreds of hours every month and now, they

can focus on something better. Same with the entire

automated billing system, our PMOs and finance team do

not need to run from pillar to post to get the time sheets of

each individual and submit them to our customers. It is a

fully automated system.

With advancements in technology in the current times, you

don't need to be a master of it to use it. If I use it in the

Cloud, there is AI, ML, natural language processing and

image-processing available as a service. It is plug-and-play.

Ma'am, please tell us about the saga of Sparkling Soul

since its inception.

My journey towards coaching began in 2012 when I was

diagnosed with cancer. Being a positive person and still

allowing this in my zone didn't go well with me. I started

to identify the reasons and as I helped myself overcome

it, it became my mission to help individuals dealing with

stress and considering small hurdles as big roadblocks. I

started to enjoy the conversations with people and

helping them in their journey towards success.

I discovered myself as a coach then. I kept coaching

people at work.

April 2013, during my visit to London on an official trip,

I wrote few things that I wanted to happen. This was a

regular exercise I would do every time, but I felt this

time it was special. Many more things came which were

beyond my imagination. I wrote I want to share what I

learnt in my corporate career so far to the world, I

wanted to be an author, physically fit and a mother.

Feb 2016 – Beating cancer & the wish to nurture a life

came true in 2016. My daughter Ira was born.

Fast forward 2017, as I always invested in myself to

learn new things every year, I completed my coaching

certification. During this period, I realized I was already

having skills and was coaching with ease. Today I am

India's first Intuition Expert, certified Business and

Executive coach with 3500+ hours of coaching and

corporate training experience. My forte in business

This name comes from my mother as she had been a

Dec 2019 – There was a spark and the vision to impact 5

generations to come evolved. From this space, my every

conversation became focused towards impacting people in

such a manner that it percolates down to their 5 generations

to come.

The year 2020 – My dream of focusing more towards my

coaching business came to a pause as my father's health

kept detoriating because of cancer. Being committed like

him, I kept moving with strength & took the pandemic as an

opportunity to impact hundreds of business owners to

generate revenue by helping them identify their jackpot in

the business.

The Year 2021- I started working with India's top five

business owners in various industries. It was an amazing

experience for me, as I was able to help them create

manifolds in their business and had become instrumental

part of their success.

I also started a unique, innovative program for business

owners – "Scale Your Business, Build Your Legacy". This

unique program has 4 pillars – Setting the Unreasonable

Revenue Goal, Mastering Inner Alignment, Raising Energy

entrepreneurship v/s burnout of working 24/7, struggling to

intuitions & energy which is responsible for any strategy to

work. My strong faith that strategies do not work unless the

business owner is internally aligned for success. This way

of business coaching is a breakthrough in coaching industry

and I feel happy & proud to be the pioneer of the same.

The Year 2022- As I continue my journey of contributing to

businesses in major way, I am also contributing to

corporates through Leadership & Executive Coaching.

What was your inspiration behind venturing into the

business arena?

Ÿ No one in my family is into business. This gives a

pathway and inspiration to venture into something very

different and new.

much potential in MSME & SME space for it to grow

manifolds. This also connects back to my dream as a

national player to make my country proud.

What initial challenges you had to surmount to ensure

your Sparkling Soul's success rate reached greater

heights?

In 2012, dealing with cancer trued my life around. Being a

positive person, very much into self-help, I could deal with

it and overcome that challenge, but it left a desire in me to

impact people's lives and help them deal with their

challenges with ease and grace. That's when I chose to be a

coach, leaving behind a leadership position and a hefty

salary in the IT world. Not that I didn't enjoy IT, I did. It

was just that I found my purpose, my love for making a

difference to people rather than working with systems and

code.

When I started my business, I had multiple responsibilities.

My daughter was just two years, and my mother had cancer,

so she needed extra attention. There was a big question of

whether to work for my passions, my purpose or continue

the comfortable job giving me all I wanted except following

my purpose.

I took a leap of faith and kept on moving towards my

dream. After my mother passed away and I gathered myself

to focus. Within six months, my father was diagnosed with

cancer and my plans to scale my business were again

shaken. After losing him within eight months of diagnosis

and dipping much into the grief of losing both parents, I

kept bringing strength through my work and impacting lives

on the go. My husband - Subramanian's support had been

instrumental in dealing with all this and helping me grow.

My coaching and its impact on the world kept me going

during the difficult times, and I made a huge impression in

2020-2021 by impacting 500+ business

owners/professionals. I am privileged to be guided into this

profession where I am touching hundreds of lives.

Once in a while, you might have wondered how these

events could have been organised on a massive scale.

You are correct in that amazement! It is genuinely

wonderous. There is tremendous hardwork, teamwork,

creating such an event and executing it successfully.

Most of the time, organising such events can be hectic and

exhaustive. Straight from the planning stage to the final

execution, it demands keen attention to every detail to

explained his beautiful journey of initiating an innovative

entity, his inspirations, earlier struggles, professional ethics

and attributes and future goals.

Sir, please tell us about the saga of Clover

Entertainment since its inception.

At the beginning of this business journey, we were just

exploring our creative abilities and how they can impact the

people around us. An example of that is our first project

which was a CSR initiative, where we worked with a group

of more than 500 underprivileged kids and organized a

Flash Mob at Inorbit, creating a platform for these kids to

showcase their talent. But as we progressed further, we

created a structure, and we were able to substantially grow

this business and at the same time sustain it as well.

What was your inspiration behind venturing into the

business arena?

From the get-go, my partner and I always envisioned doing

something larger than life and out of the box. We didn't

want our creativity to be tied down and restricted. Using the

learnings from our cumulative experience and applying

certain ideas as marketing solutions, for our clients helped

us become the business we are today.

Some of the people that inspired us are the bigwigs of

businesses like Ratan Tata, Anand Mahindra etc. They are

not only making a big impact in their businesses but also

making a difference in the society.

What were the initial challenges you had to surmount to

ensure Clover Entertainments's success rate reached

greater heights?

Every business goes through a teething period, and so did

ours. In the initial days, the challenges include finding the

right fit for the team, understanding client expectations and

creating a strategy to meet those expectations.

To surpass these challenges, we started hiring fresh talent

whose mindset matched ours, and we trained and honed

their skills which in turn helped us bag the clients that we

aspired.

Lastly, keep updating yourself with new trends and learn

new skills to stay updated and relevant. A bonus piece of

advice would be never to give up on your dream and create

smaller goals to achieve it.

How do you envision Clover Entertainment's operations

with the emerging technologies and automated tools

revolutionizing the business world by enabling

innovations?

In 2019, we ventured into Digital Marketing which helped

us to integrate campaigns and events, that we did offline

with the online space. After the COVID Pandemic,

everyone has realized the importance of connecting with

people online through technology. We are trying to build

ideas based on this integration which will give brands 360-

degree support to reach their audience better.

Please tell us the ABBZOH Expertise Unique's saga

since its inception.

I always say this when asked, and it always stands true – 'I

did not choose my profession; my profession chose me.'

I entered this training industry at 19, worked at CRISIL and

went on to be associated with training ever since. While

studying in Australia, I also had a stint selling American

Express Credit Cards there, and in that sales job working

with people and teams, I seemed to become more and more

certain of my calling. People were my calling; helping

individuals find their potential and watch them grow into

who they truly want to be was just so fascinating and

fulfilling.

When I came back to India, I was always inclined toward

this industry, but frankly, the idea of coaching was very

alien at the time, especially in India. I worked in training

for a while under a great boss and mentor. When I started,

coaching was not easy. There was a sense of ego and power

play because successful people did not think they needed

help doing anymore. People who didn't consider themselves

successful did not feel that being coached was an

investment rather a waste of time and money.

But this challenge was one I was ready to accept and

overcome. I landed clients eager to improve and prepared to

invest in themselves, and in this digital marketing era, I am

proud to say 80% of my business started and grew on

referrals, and word of mouth. I kept learning, growing, and

studying- I learnt Intelligent Leadership and was coached

by Steve Job's coach John Mattone.

I have studied Emotional Intelligence, Cognitive

Behavioural Therapy and Neuro-Linguistics in my

coaching journey and I am learning sleep

science. Of course, now the industry has

crossed billions of dollars, and Coaching

has become a sought-after industry for

many aspiring coaches, especially since

the pandemic. I am just truly privileged

to be part of this industry for over 15

years.

What was your inspiration behind

venturing into the business arena?

The inspiration was simple. I noticed

people were desperate to run their

businesses in a better way. They wished

to acquire powerful leadership acumen,

healthy relationships, and, in that way,

fulfilling their lives. But some were

afraid to seek help, while others didn't

know where and how to start. My

inspiration truly came from these people

and the urge to be that bridge between

where they are and where they want to

be. People inspired me to venture into

this business arena.

What were the initial challenges you

had to surmount to ensure ABBZOH

reached greater heights?

The first challenge was my age; I started

coaching at 24. And I had been judged a

lot based on my age. People would think

what a young coach can provide, whether

she will be mature or wise enough,

whether she will be unbiased and

objective, and whether she has the

knowledge of relationships and

leadership, for that matter life itself to the

level to understand and guide. But these

doubts always vanished after our first

consult or session.

Another challenge was people being

coached because they wanted to do better

and be better, not because something was

essentially wrong with them. This was a

stigma, and there was no clear

understanding between coaching,

therapy, and counselling.

People were my calling;

helping individuals to find

the potential within and watch

them grow into who they truly

want to be was just so

fascinating and fulfilling.

What highlights my brand is credibility, accountability and

rapport building, and the human connection with clients.

As an experienced professional, what would you like to

advise the budding aspirants willing to enter the

business world?

Do not enter this business for fast money or if you want to

be busy with a side hustle. You are responsible for people's

lives more than you can imagine. How you say, how, and

why you say it helps them assess and evaluate their lives.

When they seek guidance from you and make you part of

their life and leadership journey, they show that they trust

you completely. Never breach that trust. Be impeccable,

trustworthy and learn emotional intelligence if you are keen

on this business.

Sometimes, I had to explain the difference and prepare them

for a less clinical approach. Also, since coaching was lesserknown,

people shared their lives fully and honestly, whether

it was about their company's financial conditions, leadership

status or a family's relationship status. It wasn't easy and, at

the same time, a bold step for them to share and trust.

Sometimes I had some clients with a sense of power play in

them. Bigger fishes or overbearers by nature who took time

to open up to the idea as their egos would get the better of

them. But it was all just a matter of time before they and I

got past this hurdle and landed on common rooted grounds.

The challenge was to not take their high handedness

personally and to not get offended. So plenty of lessons and

learning for me. Being patient and dealing with clients

calmly has helped me overcome these challenges. I, too,

have constantly been learning in the process. Today, some

of the ego-driven clients from the past are the humblest

most positively transfromed and also my biggest

cheerleaders.

What professional values and qualities do you think

your clients value in you and your company the most?

That's a question best asked to them. But I would like to

believe that it is my emotional intelligence, integrity,

perspective, and the ability to help them make decisions or

steer in directions they wish to with more clarity. These are

the values I think they value in my company and me the

most.

How do you envision ABBZOH Expertise Unique's

operations with the emerging technologies and

automated tools that are revolutionizing the business

world by enabling innovations?

Oh, I am sure you would agree that technology is a friend

or a foe depending on how you decide to use it. You can

either build with it or destroy with it. In general, automated

tools have been a blessing for our industry. I have launched

my app 'The Life Manifesto, with content for all recorded

and live. The process is underway and will be live very

soon.

I have been running a successful podcast available across

all platforms like The Empowering Series and Monday

Mantras. Now, 'The Life Manifesto is on IVM podcasts. It

is also available on all audio platforms like Spotify, Apple

podcast, Jio Saavn etc. So, it is helping me reach out to

thousands across the globe, with an increasing list of clients

amongst them. Additionally, technology has been a gamechanger.

Since the pandemic, I took time to adapt.

However, my collaboration with apps and brands

worldwide helped me conduct over 500 live sessions,

streams, and workshops.

If you become too reliant on it, technology might cripple

you. Thus, I have been using it as much as I need it. That

way, it has been miraculous in the coaching and learning

industry. And along with the App, Podcasts and Live

Sessions, innovation and creative thinking play an immense

role. So, I am always working on that.
