One of the absolute greatest Marathon sensations in The Netherlands of the last five years is
Mark van den Berg from IJsselmuiden … First in 2007 he started as individual member on his own
address and just five seasons later Mark won almost all there was to win; National races, NPO races …
he even managed to make it to the Olympiad!! By the year he managed to bring his marathon colony of
seldom class closer to perfection and he knows what it takes to bring out the best in his super cracks.

Pigeons has been everyday business in the Van den
Berg family since Mark was a young boy. With his
father Gerard and brother Henri they had super years
in racing as partnership G. van den Berg & Sons, with
the 1. National Le Mans in 2005 as their definite
breakthrough. Than already Mark set his mind on
‘another world’, the world of marathon racing … he
started to carefully purchase some marathon pigeons
and when he and his wife bought their present house
in 2007, Mark van den Berg was ready to make one of
the greatest entrances in pigeon history.
2009 was really the ‘big boom’, when Mark won both
the 1. National Bergerac from 13,218 birds as the 1.
National Montauban from 5,413 birds … In that year
also three more top five positions on NPO marathon
races were won and Mark was really on top of the
world … literally, because in 2010 his 1. National
Montauban winner ‘Zara’ stroke again winning 2. NPO
Brive and together with 4 more top performances on
Nationals she was send to the Olympiad and became
2. International marathon performer …
In 2011 and 2012 Mark van den Berg continuously
performed on high level and became the man to beat.
In 2012 he again performed sublime, winning a/o 1.
NPO Orange and 3. I.prov. Aurillac and 6 more top 50
National or NPO positions. Especially the super
breeding pair ‘Brive 2’ x ‘Het Wonder van Drijber’
takes credits for a large share of the success; almost
every egg they hatch turns into gold. Even though the
future is often insecure, Mark van den Berg’s place in
the Marathon Hall of Fame is a certainty. What this
young man has achieved by means of top pigeons
and super devotion, is written in the annals of Dutch
pigeon sport with gold.
