A silk merchant in China in 200 B.C. would
have faced a months-long journey to get his
I’m a supremely self
conscious person. Not
many people believe
this about me
because of the
reasons I’m sharing
below, but I struggle
CONSTANTLY with my
image, my
awkwardness, my
ADHD blunders - I
could go on and on. I
don’t want to see
myself on camera. I
don’t look at myself in
mirrors in an effort to
keep my thoughts off
of myself and my
insecurities OR I check
every mirror and
desperately try to
make that adjustment
that’s GOT to make
me look better than I
currently do.
people or when I'm
meeting folks after a
concert or church or
just spending time
with two or three
friends. It’s always
there, nagging me,
hanging out in the
shadows. But friends
- THAT IS THE ENEMY
- and he’s got to go!! I
want to live in
fullness and
freedom.
I want the peace and
joy that come from
knowing the Lord and
being loved by Him
and I am AGGRESSIVE
about that. It’s not
completely automatic.
We have to work it.
The enemy is real and
seeks to steal our
promises, kill our
faith, and destroy us.
There are a few
reasons why I
worship unabashedly,
and none of them are
self-confidence.
"The Insecure
Believer"
And I struggle with
these things even
when I’m on the
platform leading
worship or when I’m
on a big stage singing
for hundreds of
It’s always there, nagging me, hanging out
in the shadows. But friends - THAT IS THE
ENEMY - and he’s got to go!!
I have confidence in
the LORD. If I am
scared to step
through a door He’s
opened or if I follow
His call with
reservations, that
says something
about my trust in
Him. Do I believe that
He’s faithful? Yes. Has
He taken me through
scary situations
before? Yes. Did my
fear or insecurity add
to anything in those
situations? No.
04
He is worthy of my
HIGHEST praises. He
is worthy of my BEST
work. He is worthy of
my TOUGHEST
sacrifice. What I feel
doesn’t play in here.
He deserves it and I
don’t want to be the
wicked servant who
held back what
belongs to Him.
Truth > Feelings. When my feelings don’t
line up, when I get in my head, when the
enemy has me tied up in lies and reveling in
self pity, I DEFAULT TO THE WORD OF GOD.
I submit it all UNDER the Truth of God. I
cannot give it power. I can’t give it time to
take root and fester. I focus on the Truth
and try to rework and rebalance my
thoughts. Resist the devil and HE WILL FLEE.
10
NJR DIGITAL MAGAZINE
Faith > Fear. I praise
Him when I’m scared. I
praise Him when things
aren’t going my way. I
praise Him when I feel
fat in my clothes. I
praise Him when my
thoughts are wrapped
up in knots. I praise
Him when something
terrible happens. I
praise Him when I feel
full of joy in my heart.
Wherever my feelings
are, I praise Him with
gratitude. I praise Him
with confidence in who
He is and with the
knowledge that He
loves me and cares for
me. I praise Him
because he knit me
together
and
understands me more
than anyone, including
myself. I praise Him
because even tho He’s
not gonna like
everything I do, He likes
me and loves my
company, and I love His
too.

So praise Him! Praise
Him fully. Praise Him
without reservation.
Praise Him whatever
your feelings are.
Praise Him wherever
your thoughts are.
He’s worthy. The
longer I do this, the
more automatic it
becomes that my
response is gratitude
and praise. My heart
releases a little more
burden. My mind
releases a little more
of those nagging
thoughts. Another
shackle comes off.
Then I praise with
even less restraint.
And peace is on the
other side of praise.
“Then said Solomon, The
Sunday
morning I sat
in the churchhouse
and
wept. Not
because I was
sad, (though
there was a bit
of that), or
because I was
in pain (there
was some of
that too); but
because He
was there.
Years ago, after
miraculously
surviving a brain
bleed, I went
through a very
dark time. I could
walk, talk, and still
play
an
instrument, but
recovery was slow,
and the surgery
had unlocked a
box in my mind I’d
kept buried for
years. Normal side
effects of brain
surgery include
sensory overload,
emotional
NJR DIGITAL MAGAZINE

To keep me safe, my
husband had to have
me committed. For a
girl with a fragile brain
who had a panic
attack every time
someone walked up
behind her, to say I
was terrified in that
place is the greatest
understatement of all
time. I couldn’t hide
behind a locked door;
there were no locks
on any doors. I
couldn’t hide beneath
bulky clothing; my
clothes were made of
thin paper. I couldn’t
hide behind my
strong husband; I was
alone in a sea of
strangers I did not
know or trust. I was
so afraid that I didn’t
sleep or shower for
three days.
It was in that place of
terror, however, that
God gifted me with a
glimpse of Himself I
had never had the
He Is
courage to see
before. Prior to the
brain bleed, I had
been managing my
anxiety and
depression in a lot of
different ways,
including avoidance,
mood-managing
medication, and
clinging to the
illusion of control.
Bible study and
prayer were a daily
part of my life, but I
never let myself or
God go anywhere
near the darkest
parts of my soul. But
on a lockdown unit
with no control over
what happened to
me, and frequently
There
flooded with
memories I could no
longer repress, I
learned something
precious. Despite my
fear, God was near.
And despite my
darkness, God was
not withdrawn. In
fact, He was closer.
He was more
palpable. All that time
I had been avoiding
dragging God into
that pit with me, but
surprisingly, He was
already there.
“Then said Solomon,
The Lord hath said
that he would dwell in
the thick darkness.” 2
Chronicles 6:1
14
NJR DIGITAL MAGAZINE

The darkness is not
just a place God walks
with us through; it is a
place He abides. That
most sacred of
spaces, the holy of
holies, where God
met with the high
priest once a year,
had no lamp and no
natural light. Veiled
behind a thick curtain,
the ark of the
covenant rested in
complete darkness.
When Moses
communed with God,
we don’t know if God’s
presence lit up the
inner chamber, or if
Moses’ eyes strained
to find the smallest
glimmer of light. This
is a foreign concept to
us. We associate God
with light, where no
darkness is. We sing
songs about God
driving the darkness
away. We rarely think
of God resting in the
deepest, darkest hole.
And yet, if you read
David’s psalms, you’ll
find God was there.
Great things begin in
darkness. Before He
ever made light for
the universe He
formed, “darkness
was upon the face of
the deep. And the
Spirit of God moved
upon the face of the
waters.” (Gen 1:1).
Before the
messenger, John,
ever beheld the
Messiah in the light,
he leapt at His
presence from the
darkness of the
womb. “And it came
to pass, that, when
Elisabeth heard the
salutation of Mary,
the babe leaped in
her womb; and
Elisabeth was filled
with the Holy Ghost,"
(Luke 1:41). Before
ever a sinner was
redeemed to God,
Christ was forsaken
in darkness on
Calvary. “And when
the sixth hour was
come, there was
darkness over the
whole land until the
ninth hour. And at the
ninth hour Jesus cried
with a loud voice,
saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama
sabachthani? which is,
being interpreted, My
God, my God, why
hast thou forsaken
me?” (Mark 15:33-34)
The darkness
precedes the light.
The storm precedes
the calm. Despair
precedes the
breakthrough.
Sunday morning, as I
sat weeping at the
end of a long week
amidst another bout
of anxiety and
depression, God was
there. He was in the
music, the lifting of
my heavy hands. He
was in the preaching,
the Truth of the Word
heavy in the air.
15
NJR DIGITAL MAGAZINE

He was in my tears,
liquid praise pouring
out of my heavy
heart. Though I was
hurting, I was not
estranged from His
holiness. Depression
did not disconnect me
from God. It allowed
me to draw even
closer..into that dark
place, that sacred
space, where fragile
humanity bows in
awe of all of creation’s
Maker.
If depression has
touched your life, or
grief, or despair, be
encouraged. You are
not dragging God into
the darkness with
you. He is already
there. And when you
walk out from that
darkness, you will find
something surprising.
There will be a
beautiful shine on
that face that has
been aching for the
light.
You, my friend, like
Moses, will come out
shining. “And it came to
pass, when Moses…
came down from the
mount, that…the skin
of his face shone while
he talked with him.”
(Exodus 34:29) So lean
into the Lord who
dwells in the thick
darkness. You don’t
need to see Him to be
in His presence. He is
there!
“For thou wilt light my
candle: the LORD my
God will enlighten my
darkness.” Psalm 18:28
One of the last things
that you would ever
expect a band of
vagabonds who call
themselves Southern
Gospel singers would
do in their ‘down
time’ is to sing. But,
you see, when there
is a Calling on your
life and a song in
your heart, you
simply must let that
indwelling melody
flow through your vocal
chords and out of your
mouth. Such was the case
one balmy, August
evening several years
ago. ‘Liberty’, a popular
group that I played piano
for, was returning to
Georgia from a long road
trip way up in the
beautiful mountains of
West Virginia.
This particular weekend’s
tour had ended on a high
note. There had been
several
glorious
salvations during the final
Sunday service, and we
were really pumped up
about that. It had been a
great time, but, eventually
we had to say our
goodbyes, but only after a
wonderful meal at the
local Western Sizzlin’
Steakhouse!

Once we got on the
Southbound
expressway, Ed, our
driver - who always
loved to sing while he
drove – tore out on
one of the standards
from the ‘Ole Red
Back’, as we called it.
We all loved singing
from that venerable,
old ‘Church Hymnal’
songbook that was
published in 1951 by
the Church of God
Denomination. Well,
friends, that’s all it
took! A crowd soon
formed in the well of
that big, red Silver
Eagle coach. For the
next several hours or
so, we had a
Hallelujah Time
singing songs like ‘In
The Sweet Forever’,
‘I’m Winging My Way
Back Home’ and
‘Heaven’s Jubilee’.
Eventually, a few of us
retired to the
bunkroom, but still,
the singing
continued. At some
point, I awoke to the
strains of ‘Farther
Along’. Even though
it wasn’t being
performed by our
front line vocalists, it
was absolutely
beautiful to me.
After the tune was
completed, someone
suggested that we
stop at the North
Georgia Welcome
Center on I-75, just
south of
Chattanooga,
Tennessee. The
driver obliged, and
we all piled out and
rushed inside to…
er… um… well… you
know… take care of
business. As quickly
as the door to the
men’s room shut, the
vocalizing resumed.
Let me stop here and
say - just for the
record - that you'll
almost always find
unbelievable acoustic
in a rest area facility.
Anyway, I’ll get back
to my story. Since it
was still fresh on their
minds, the guys
encored with another
verse or two of
‘Farther Along’. Little
did we know what
would happen next…
When we pushed the
door open to exit, to
our surprise, a crowd
of about 20 folks had
gathered in that
massive lobby of the
Welcome Center. We
were met with
thunderous applause
and hearty laughter.
That is, except for an
older couple that I
noticed over to one
side, weeping. Here’s
the story that they
related to us that
night.
Early that morning,
they had left their
hometown of
Morenci, Michigan in
a rented U-Haul truck,
filled with all their
earthly possessions,
towing a little
compact Honda car
behind. The
gentleman, we found
out, was a Minister.
He had recently
resigned as pastor of
a large, thriving
church to move to
Florida to pastor a
very small, fledgling
congregation. Since
they had to be in
Tampa on Monday
morning, they had not
been afforded the
opportunity to be in
worship services like
we’d been in all day.
They were feeling
very road weary, a
little lonely, and had
even begun to
question if they’d
made the right
decision to pull up
roots and make such
a drastic move this
NJR DIGITAL MAGAZINE
20
late in life. They had
even contemplated
turning around and
heading back to
Michigan. Instead, they
decided to take a short
break, and had pulled
into the Rest Area. As
they approached the
restroom doors, they
heard singing coming
from the men’s room.
Puzzled, they looked at
each other. She said to
him, ‘Listen! That’s the
grand old, hymn,
‘Farther Along’. It was!
And it wasn’t by chance
that the first words of it
they heard were these
reassuring words:
“ ‘Faithful till death’, said
our loving Master, ‘A few
more days to labor and
wait.’ Toils of the road
will then seem as
nothing as we sweep
through the Beautiful
Gate. Farther along we’ll
know all about it.
Farther along, we’ll
understand why. Cheer
up my brother! Live in
the sunshine. We'll
understand it all by and
by."
Live in the sunshine…
Wait. They were moving
to FLORIDA! Well, Glory!
Confirmation, indeed!!!
Each time we, as gospel
performers, step onto a
stage, we should
remember the
awesome responsibility
that God has trusted us
with to affect our
audiences for eternal
good. But, just how
often do we realize that
God can and will use us
in any situationanytime
and anywhere?
We may think that we’re
just having fun, but God
could be using us for His
purpose and for His
Glory. Don’t agree with
me? You just go ask that
little Preacher Man and
his sweet wife if they
believe God can speak
through some good ole
boys from North
Georgia who didn’t have
any better sense than to
sing His praises…even in
the men’s room!!
Reflections from
Mayberry
/ by Greg & Donna Journey
September is a busy, busy time for
the town of Mt.Airy, NC . Mayberry
Days is a multi-day celebration
with activities and events for fans
of The Andy Griffith Show who
long for the days when life was
simple and the sheriff didn't carry
a gun. This year the dates will be
Sept. 19th through September
25th.
Many folks visit Mayberry during
September and October due to the
changing of leaves and beautiful
Fall foliage on The Blue Ridge
Parkway which is a short drive
from Mt.Airy. Some attractions on
the Blue Ridge Parkway are
Maybry Mill which is about a 30
minute drive from Mt.Airy. There
are many produce stands to stop
at where you can buy apples,
pears, muscadines, hoop cheese,
homemade butter and many more
delicious items grown by our local
farmers.
As a child I have many fond
memories of visiting downtown
and eating a cheeseburger or hot
dog at Snappy Lunch and watching
my Grandpa and Daddy eat one of
Snappy’s famous pork chop
sandwiches. Many Sundays after
church we would go by and get
chicken and take a picnic up on
the Parkway. Daddy, Mama and
my sister and I would eat at
Groundhog Mountain Picnic area
and then go visit Maybry Mill. We
would enjoy watching molasses
being made and flour and
cornmeal being made at the mill. It
was a simple time but so many
wonderful memories were made!
Autumn is a great time to visit us
in Mayberry! So come on and see
us and enjoy going back in time to
a much simpler lifestyle.
The Joyaires
"I'll Thank You For The Grace"
It was after a two year struggle with things
that our family was going through. I had
prayed for God to fix things I couldn’t fix,
for God to change situations that we were
facing and all the while I was traveling
preaching in revivals and singing as well as
pastoring the church. It finally came to a
day that I was completely exhausted
physically, mentally, and even spiritually. I
was wrung out.
I was at my place of prayer and I began to attempt to talk to God. I said, “ God I don’t
understand. I’ve given you everything in my life. I’m running myself ragged all over
the country trying to be a blessing to Gods people, wearing myself out, and Lord, I’ve
been begging you for two years to help this situation that we are facing, not asking
selfishly but asking for you to help people I love and Lord you haven’t done
anything." This was my empty cry that day. Confused and frustrated.
About that time the Holy Spirit began to speak to my heart and said, “ I know I
haven’t answered your prayer the way you’ve prayed it but you are mistaken if you
think I haven’t done anything”.
It was then in my tired frustration and even arrogance that I said “ Oh yeah? What
have you done God? For two years it hasn’t gotten better it’s gotten worse!” It’s then
that the Lord Spoke to my heart this thought. “He said Son, I know you think I
haven’t done anything, but if you would look back over your shoulder in your minds
eye over the last two years, during the lowest place of your life, it’s been my grace
that carried you every step of the way. “
I then with tears said “I’m sorry God. You’re right, this valley has been so hard that
the enemy would have killed me here had it not been for your grace that’s brought
me to where I am today. I then went in the house and penned the words…
When I can’t thank You for the answer, I’ll thank You for the grace.
