iii. Non-optimal Functioning of the NAPE
E-Library to allow for NAPE Bulletin
Indexing: This was a major challenge faced
during my tenure as EiC. Going down
memory lane, it was advised that NAPE
Bulletins be moved from the NAPE website
to NAPE E-Library.However, for a long time,
the E-Library was not functioning optimally.
Hence, NAPE Bulletins that have been duly
published were not accessible to members.
I had to step-in to engage with the E-Library
Website developer to ensure that the
expected deliverables as contained in the
Award contract were delivered to enable us
to use the URL of the Bulletins among other
requirements to conclude the process of
NAPE Bulletin Indexing. The key delays and
Cataloguing/Archiving of the Technical
Contents in the previous NAPE E-
Library;lack of download option; lack of a
handle on the NAPE Website home page for
Article Submission (access/template);lack
of Editorial Policy, Plagiarism Policy, and
Reviewers guideline/Template; No handle
(link) to 'Access Bulletin' on the NAPE
Website home page. However, the good
news is that all these numerous challenges
have been addressed and a new E-Library
Website has been designed, and upload of
Bulletins and other resource materials are
ongoing. Following this E-Library
breakthrough, the EB-TP Committee has
reactivated the engagement with Elsevier
Scopus for the indexing of the NAPE
Bulletin. The plan is to achieve this feat
before NAPE AICE 2022.
5. What are some of the most important
qualities for an EIC to have?
Answer: -
a. Competence / Experience: subject
matter experts from the industry or
institutions of higher learning with good
understanding based on previous
volunteering or hands-on experience in the
NAPE Editorial Board or in a similar role.
This will aid swift decision making, setting of
SMART Goals, and effective tracking of
results.
b. Passion/Diligence: - Given that the
office of the EiC is a volunteer role, an EiC
must be a professional with powerful or
compelling emotion and drive borne out of
love for technical service to NAPE and
Editorial responsibilities.
c. Availability: This is a very important
quality that is key in selecting an EiC. S/he
should be someone that has time, will make
time and be available to carry out the tedious
responsibilities that the office demands.
From my experience, no matter how highly
experienced and passionate a member of
NAPE may be, if S/he will not have adequate
time at his or her disposal, then such a
person is not qualified for the office of NAPE
Editor-in-Chief.
d. Human Relations/Human Capital
Management: The NAPE Editorial
Board/Technical Programme Committee is
arguably the largest committee of NAPE in
terms of membership and direct interface
with NAPE members. This is a committee
with membership and volunteers in some
hundreds of high-profile professionals of
NAPE viz: captains of the oil and gas
industries, managers, subject matter
experts, a great number of professors and
Doctors drawn from universities studying
G e o s c i e n c e c o u r s e s l o c a l l y a n d
internationally. These volunteers serve as
Editors, Associate Editors, Session Chairs,
Judges in IT Support/QA/CQ, Short
Courses/Summer Schools, Field Trip, etc
Subcommittees. The act of getting people
together to accomplish desired goals and
objectives is imperative. As a result, an EiC
must be very good in human relations,
e f f e c t i v e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s k i l l s ,
understanding of human psychology and
human capital management in order to chair
and manage such high profile individuals,
delegate responsibilities and action items,
encourage and motivate, take feedback,
mutual respect, track results in a timely
fashion and close out on expected
deliverables per time; focus on policies,
structure and systems to drive and
maximize performance; have the capacity
to develop talent, deploy talent, and
generate results. In doing these, the EiC is
t o u p h o l d a “ N o h a r a s s m e n t o r
discrimination policy”. This helps in
succession planning.
e. Interested in high Standard and
Quality: NAPE members deserve the best.
Therefore, an EiC must be tech-savvy with
high value placed on excellent quality of
contents, graphic design, and printing.
f. Result Oriented:- To qualify as NAPE,
EiC one must have the ability to ensure that
processes are followed through to
successful delivery of set goals without
excuses for failure.
