LUSD Announces High School Expansion Deal
School District to receive 19 acres of land from MH Developers LLC/Resmark to grow MHHS
By Bryan Harrison
Mountain House – The Lammersville
Unified School District announced at
their September 21, 2022 board meeting
that the district is set to receive an
additional 19 acres of land on which
they will be able to expand Mountain
House High School.
“We were able to work out an arrangement
with Resmark/Mountain
House Developers, LLC (acting on
behalf of land owner, CalPERS),
whereby 19 additional acres will
become part of the campus,” reported
LUSD Superintendent Dr. Kirk
Nicholas. He went on to state that
an agreement was made the previous
Friday, with parties scheduled to
come together to finalize the deal with
signatures at the end of September.
The near term plan is to use about six
of those acres for additional fields.
He said for sports like Lacrosse, field
hockey, and more, adding that the
current field is not enough.
“We’ve been scrambling for space”. Big picture, “we’re proud
of the outcome,” he said with a warm smile. “We have 45
acres now and we will have 64 acres.”
The rectangular 19 acre plot Plan sits at the corner of Central
Parkway and Grant Line Rd, two blocks from the south edge
of the high school campus.
Stealin’ Chicago, aka Aja Vu, Rocks Final MH Concert of the Season
By Bryan Harrison
What a great way to wrap the season! A big change in the weather
from previous monthly concert events at the 2022 Mountain House
Music In The Park series welcomed arguably the largest crowd at
this, the final show of the season Saturday, September 17, 2022. The
three hour show featured the dynamic and polished sounds of Stealin’
Chicago, aka Aja Vu. Predominantly a tribute to the vast catalog of
music by the band, Chicago, this talented outfit nailed it! In addition
to playing many of the Chicago hits, they not only delved deeper
into earlier album tracks, but also showcased some great renditions
of numerous Steely Dan songs.
The Mountain House Music In The Park series is produced by the MH Community Services District
(MHCSD) as a Public Recreation service to the community - one of the 18 services the district provides, as orchestrated
by coordinator, Angel Lamb. Folks turned out for this one by the droves, with canopies set up all the way back across
the baseball diamond.
The concert series this year has endured some extreme heat at several of the monthly events. Last night was a bit of a
reversal of that trend. With a storm on the way later in the night, the crowd got a taste of “Mountain House Winds”,
especially early in the five to six o’clock hour. After the sun set, the winds died down and by the band’s second set, the
party was on!
Music fans of all ages were dancing in front of the stage and at their stations, many of them singing along, as the band
moved seamlessly through a strong set list. Steely Dan hits included precision renditions of songs like: Reelin’ in The
Years, Black Cow, and Do It Again. The Chicago songbook was vast. Big hits on the evening included Saturday In
The Park, Hard to Say I’m Sorry, and their closing
number, a raucous 25 or 6 to 4 featuring guitarist
Ronnie Jamison channeling the great Terry Kath
and, of course, a superb horn section. Lead singers,
Andy Morales and Frank Rios, paid great respect to
both bands with spot-on vocals.
Community groups were out in force, along with
several vendors and candidates for the upcoming
local elections. The Rotary Club of MH offered up
beer and wine, and New York Life was providing
ID cards for kids.
“This was such a great event,” stated an enthusiastic
Hazel Maglasang, owner of the locally-based En
Pointe Dance Studio. Seems all present would agree.
A fun way to close the season!

One Incumbent & Five Challengers for Two Seats on MHCSD Board
The upcoming November 8 general election includes the question of who will fill two of five seats on the MHCSD Board of Directors for the next term
The upcoming Mid-Term election is fast approaching. Election Day 2022 is slated for
November 8 - traditionally the second Tuesday of November. In California, however,
voters will be able to do their civic duty at their own convenience. Every registered
voter in the state will receive a ballot in the mail. Said ballots may be completed and
mailed in, or taken to a nearby voting station, or even dropped off in a certified box
to be counted.
On the local level, there are two big races in Mountain House on which voters will decide. The Community
Services District Board of Directors (MHCSD) has two of its five seats on the ticket. The Lammersville
Unified School District Board of Trustees (LUSD) has two of its five seats open for a regular four-year term,
as well as a third “Short Term” seat for a two year term. The oddity of the Short Term seat occurs as a result
two board members leaving their positions in the midst of their terms, as they each had cause to move out of
the area. Appointed replacements must now be elected; two for four years; and the other for a two year term.
For the MH Community Services District Board, current MHCSD Board President, Manuel Moreno is up for
re-election, and the seat currently occupied by Director Brian Lucid is coming available. Mr. Lucid declined
to file papers to pursue re-election, citing personal reasons.
There are five registered challengers for the Mountain House Community Services District Board of Directors
to go against President Moreno and/or the seat left open by the departure of Director Lucid. MH Matters
requested that all candidates submit a brief statement to assist residents in understanding their options
in voting. Candidate statements are shown here.
Matt Disko
Business Owner/Entrepreneur
Since relocating to Mountain House in 2019, I have done my best to
engage in community building with the intent of uniting the many
diverse cultures of our small town.
I run two businesses: Mountain House Events LLC; and MattDisko.
com Handyman. Mountain House Events LLC provides a variety
of event production services and sponsorships for local non-profits
and school organizations, and MattDisko.com offers handyman and
home improvement services.
During the pandemic of 2020, I offered a free Socially Distanced DJ
service to boost spirits in a very trying time, providing free 30-minute
hyper-local pop-up parties for birthdays, graduations, and holidays when events were scarce.
In the fall of 2020, I organized a 5-day community-wide cleanup focusing on each village per day with
the goal of gathering volunteers to help beautify our town.
In 2021, I organized several post-pandemic events over the summer including free Cinco De Mayo,
Memorial Day, and Labor Day events, then co-produced the 4th of July Independence Festival for over
2,500 residents at Central Park.
In Q4, I focused on crowdfunding over $10,000 to build MH's first dog park. With the help of hundreds of
donors and volunteers, Sydney’s Dog Park opened next to Central Park's Tennis Courts in April of this year.
“Sydney” was the 18-month-old pet of a local Indian family whose dog fell victim to a rare genetic cancer
and was an honored legacy at the park.
In 2022, I hosted a Movie in the Park series featuring both American and Indian classic movies in July
and August. This October, I’m hosting a city-wide block party on Halloween night in Bethany Village,
offering free food for the first 100 guests.
My business, Mountain House Events, has been a huge supporter of non-profit organizations, LUSD campuses,
and cultural events, often providing event and music services at a discount or as a donation-in-kind.
My MH Events contract with the MHCSD provided event production and management services to scale
out events, including Music in the Park and other civic festivals since 2021.
My passion is to improve the living experience of all residents in 95391, regardless of race or religion,
and to be the positive change needed in our ever-growing town.
I am currently running for an open seat on the MHCSD Board of Directors this coming election, November
8th, 2022. As a board member, I will help secure another provider for sound and production assistance for
the Music In The Park events and any other similar events that might be construed as a potential conflict.
Manuel Moreno
Incumbent
7
I was appointed to the MHCSD Board of Directors in August 2016
and elected to a full term in November 2018. During my time on
the Board, I have served two years as President and two years as
Vice President. I currently Chair the MHCSD Transportation Committee.
I am a pragmatic thinker who is not afraid to make difficult
issues impacting our community. If elected to a second term, I will
continue to focus on Incorporation, Transportation, Public Safety,
for Mountain House.
Suresh Vuyyuru
Engineer/Parent
Public service is my passion and my calling. I find myself thinking
about various initiatives that can potentially improve the quality of
life of my community. Since moving to Mountain House, I have been
actively volunteering in various activities, be it organizing sports
tournaments, providing platform to exhibit performances or working
on neighborhood issues by bringing vital issues to the attention of
concerned authorities while consistently following up on them.
I was volunteering in various large organizations in the Bay Area
for the past 19 years, these organizations expanding their services
to Mountain House area. Using these connections I would help our
community to get prioritized opportunities. I am helping various local organizations, individuals and
businesses connect to the right resources.
As part of my continued commitment to serve our community, I will support Public safety, Education,
Sports & recreation.
Public Safety
Public safety is critical for every resident irrespective of any community. No person can ever be safe
enough and the bar of safety always keeps going higher with time. I would like to put Public Safety
as one of my top priorities. I will work with authorities for enforcing traffic rules and initiating new
measures in road safety. I will also work actively with county officials in the matter of weed abatement
in the land surrounding Mountain House.
Education
Mountain House is evolving into a standard bearer for excellence in schools which is one of the reasons
why families are gravitating to our community. As we are in the proximity of the most technologically
advanced region in the world, I will invite technology leaders as guest speakers to share their experiences
with our kids to motivate them and guide them to be the best they can be. I will ensure that MHCSD
collaborates with LUSD in maximizing usage of our existing resources. I will also help in starting open
source projects for MHCSD and involve High School students with internships.
Sports & Recreation
Sports and physical activity is an integral and essential part of life be it during childhood or adulthood. I
have already spawned the Mountain House Sports and Recreation Club which will help foster sporting
activities for our community. I intend to propose and quickly implement a multipurpose indoor sports
and recreation facility that will serve all members of our community including senior citizens. This will
help in generating revenue as well as providing employment.
Elections
Continued from page 6
The Lammersville Unified School District Board of Trustees race is slightly more
complicated. Current Board President, Colin Clements, is up for re-election. Appointed
incumbent Trustee, Vanitha Daniel, is also up for a four year seat, while
fellow appointed incumbent, Lisa Boulais, must run for a two-year term - at the
end of which the seat will then revert to every four years for her, or whomever
occupies the seat should one of her challengers defeat her come November.
The race, then, is divided into two parts. The two four year chairs, currently occupied by Clements and Daniel,
are one part of the race. There is one registered challenger taking the two of them on. That is long time resident
Arjun Juturu. That makes three candidates vying for two seats.
The other part of the race is the seat occupied by appointed incumbent, Lisa Boulais. She, however, has two
challengers facing off with her, including Dr. Jasjeet Kaur and Mr. Harmeet Gill.
MH Matters requested that all candidates submit a brief statement to assist residents in understanding
their options in voting. Unfortunately, we connect with just five of the six candidates. Those Candidate
statements are shown here.
Colin Clements
Incumbent
I grew up in Southeast Kansas, so when my wife, Ginny, and I
moved our family to the Lammersville community in 2004 it felt
like coming home! We love it here so much that for years after I lost
my job during the downturn I commuted to work in North Highlands
so that my children could continue to go to school here.
I am a CPA with over 25 years of experience in real estate development
and construction, including planning, financing, and building
schools. Two instances showed the value of this experience to
the District. I learned of a recurring natural gas leak at Wicklund
Elementary that had not been resolved for about six months. I leveraged
my contacts at the Division of the State Architect to ensure that the issue was quickly resolved.
I later learned that the District had failed to timely file for matching funds on Bethany Elementary and,
further, had only appealed for about half of the $8 million that the District actually qualified for. I met
with members of the State Allocation Board to campaign for the District, and am proud that the District
did receive the full $8 million!
I believe that a candidate should show that they are willing to serve before they ask the community to elect
them. I volunteered for MH Flag Football and was the Treasurer for MH Little League. I also served on
the boards of WSF, BSF, QSF, MHHS Visual and Performing Arts Boosters, and MHHS Athletic Boosters.
My experience, history of service, and value to the district has been recognized and I am honored by
endorsements from a growing list of teachers, staff, and community members. I am proud to be the ONLY
candidate endorsed by the North Valley Labor Federation, which represents over 45 different unions/
chapters and tens of thousands of workers in San Joaquin County!
For the past eight years, it has been my honor to serve the community as a School Board Trustee. While
an individual Trustee cannot take credit for the accomplishments of the District, I am very proud of its
successes, including but not limited to:
• Highest performing school district in San Joaquin County
• Surpassed Livermore public schools and closed the gap with Dublin and Pleasanton public schools
• Our Early College Pathway program, wherein students graduate with college credits up to an AS or AA
degree, won the California School Board Association (CSBA) award (2017) and the National School
Board Association (NSBA) Award (2018)
• Awarded CSBA “Golden Bell” award for Safety and School Culture (2020)
• Achieved learning GAINS during COVID (US average was a learning LOSS of approximately 13 weeks)
• Passed “Measure L” to enable the District to complete the high school
• Planned, designed, financed, and constructed six different schools and other facilities
Please visit my website at electcolinclements.com to learn more. If you would like to endorse me or
I would greatly appreciate your support and your vote on November 8th!
Issue #105 • October 2022
I am a firm believer in achieving social mobility via educational
attainment. My lived experiences and observations have fostered
my passion for community service and education.
Being a resident of Mountain House since 2005 with children
who’ve done or are doing their complete K-12 education within
LUSD, I have firsthand knowledge of our district’s expansion and
the challenges LUSD and K-12 students have tackled along the way.
Moreover, I’ve seen the ways in which LUSD and Mountain House
have evolved, and recognize the need for our school board to reflect
the vast diversity of our community.
Having a plethora of non-profit leadership experience, combined with being a parent, South Asian
immigrant, small-business owner and post-baccalaureate graduate, I believe that it’s crucial to cultivate
a socio-culturally competent academic environment that is safe, equitable and provides a wide array of
academic and career-building opportunities so our children are successful.
If elected to the LUSD Board of Trustees, I hope to increase representation in our school board and address
campus safety concerns, establish diversity-related initiatives across our district and expand educational
opportunities (i.e., financial literacy, vocational education, FFA) via community-based partnerships and
stakeholder engagement that includes students, staff, administrators and parents throughout the process.
Vanitha Daniel
Appointed Incumbent
Hello everyone, my name is Vanitha Daniel and I am excited to
announce my candidacy as an Incumbent in the General Elections
on November 8th, 2022 for the Lammersville Joint Unified School
District ( LUSD) Board of Trustees!!
As a mother of two LUSD children and an educator, I firmly believe
that a comprehensive and quality-oriented education will help us
build a better tomorrow for our community.
Early in my life, I discovered a passion for education which led me to
tutor students full-time, teaching hundreds of our community’s kids.
While teaching, I began to understand the issues our students and parents face today. That encouraged me
to become a substitute teacher at LUSD. Wanting to make a larger impact on our school and education
systems led me to become a school board member.
Over the last 2 years, I have served you all as one of the Trustees of Lammersville Joint Unified School
District and it has been a privilege and absolute honor. I am proud of the dedication shown by our
teachers, administrators, classified personnel, and students. As a trustee, I have served on the District
English Learners Advisory Committee and Education committee for 2021 and currently serve in the
Policy, Education and Wellness Committees for 2022. My experiences on the board have helped me
understand the process of taking an issue, identifying the crux, and working with the board and superintendent
to find a resolution.
Currently, we have good momentum within the board and are working together with our students and
staff in mind. With the increasing demand and need for students to be assigned to their home school, I
am happy to share that we recently had the groundbreaking for our new school - Evelyn Costa at College
Park and is scheduled to be ready soon. This will enable students to be assigned to their home schools
and minimize the overflow to neighboring schools. We will also have our very first Cricket ground built
at Evelyn Costa for our students.
I am standing for re-election with 4 goals.
1. Strive to enhance safety at LUSD Schools.
2. Improve student mental and physical health resources.
3. Re-establish student academic excellence, post- pandemic.
4. Continue to be a voice for the students, staff and community of Mountain House.
Once again, I would like to reiterate that it has been a pleasure to serve the LUSD students, staff and
community of Mountain House as their Trustee on the Lammersville Joint Unified School District board.
Given an opportunity to serve as your Trustee for the next 4 years, I will work with you and for you to build
a brighter tomorrow. I will dedicate myself to making responsible financial decisions for our schools and
strive to introduce new programs to include every student. LUSD families deserve a passionate advocate
willing to fight for our students’ education and future, which is why I humbly ask for your vote in this
election. Please go to: www.vanithadaniel4lusd.com/ or my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/vdaniel4

Lisa Boulais
Appointed Incumbent
In May of 2021, I was appointed to the Lammersville Unified School
district as a governing board trustee. I am running in the November
election to retain this seat. As a school board trustee, I am committed
to making sound decisions that will ensure educational excellence,
equity amongst students, and fiscal responsibility for the district.
I have enjoyed these past 17 months on the school board and look
forward to continuing the work that I have started. In addition to
visiting school sites and attending school functions throughout the
district, I have been pursuing educational opportunities to ensure
that I am a well-informed trustee. I have completed courses in
school board governance that include setting direction, policy and judicial review, school finance, and
human resources.
I have lived in Mountain House for 18 years. I have three children who have attended both Wicklund
Elementary School and Mountain House High School. I have been an active parent volunteer since
the day my oldest daughter was in Kindergarten. For several years, I served as a board member for
Wicklund’s Parent/Teacher Organization. In this role, I organized countless fundraisers and served as
the annual auction coordinator. In addition, I was a member of Wicklund’s School Site Council as well
as the LUSD Facilities Committee. The most rewarding volunteer work, however, has been working
directly with students. In addition to helping with school plays and summer camps, I have coached
Science Olympiad at the Elementary, Middle, and High School levels. And, I coached Speech & Debate
for Mountain House High School.
In my professional career, I am a Registered Nurse with 20 years of clinical experience. I have a Master’s
Degree in Trauma & Critical Care Nursing. Over the course of my career, I have taken care of all types
of patients from the very old to the very young. My clinical experience ranges from acute inpatient care
to Emergency, trauma, Lifeflight and critical care transport. I have also participated in humanitarian
missions in China & Mongolia, working with health care practitioners to care for critically ill patients.
I am a military veteran with 15 years of service in the Army. Upon graduating from college, I was
commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and began my career as an Army Nurse. I had the honor of caring for
sick and injured service members, retirees, and their families both stateside and overseas. My military
experience includes formal training in leadership development and personnel management. I perfected
these skills in my roles as Executive Officer and Program Manager. After 15 years, and attaining the
rank of Major, I resigned my commission to pursue other opportunities.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, traveling, volunteering, eating at new restaurants,
cooking, and attending drama productions.
I look forward to continuing my role as Governing Board Trustee for the Lammersville Unified School
District and would be honored to have your vote.
Dr. Jasjeet Kaur
Doctor/Parent
I’m running for the LUSD school board for the two year position. I
have been a resident of MH for the past seven years. I live here with
my husband who is a dentist as well as a US Army Lt Col. We have
two beautiful children who were born here, a four year old daughter,
and a six month old son. We look forward to them being a part of
this wonderful community and thriving in our schools.
As for myself, I am a Board Certified Adult and Child & Adolescent
Psychiatrist. My work experience is extremely diverse as I have
worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings with patients who
actively served in the military, veterans, and children and adolescents of all ages . I have extensive experience
working with traumatized adults and children and specialize in treating a variety of mental health
issues such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse issues, depression, and anxiety.
My past academic affiliations include being an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein
University, School of Medicine in New York.
With my given qualifications, I believe I can translate my knowledge into creating an environment where
students of all academic needs have access to quality education and mental health services, teachers
are given proper training, compensation, and respect, and the overall atmosphere is safe and secure for
students, educators, and administration.
MAINTAINING YOUR FRONT YARD TREES
As a friendly reminder, trees located in your front yards and especially
in the District Right-of-Way, are due for maintenance. As many of
you might already know, these trees are the responsibility of the
homeowner to maintain. Unfortunately, many of these trees are in
a state of deferred maintenance. In the past, MHCSD Staff published
a series of articles that covered requirements and other helpful
guidelines to educate our residents. Our goal was to encourage
residents to become more active in maintaining their trees in the
correct manner. Residents were also directed to the Mountain House
Residential Design Guideline Manual (Appendix F), which provides
the requirements that each resident must follow. This document
can be found on the Mountain House website in addition to the
Mountain House CC&Rs and Ordinances. These clear guidelines
are available to assure that correct and consistent maintenance
practices are established for trees growing in front yards and the
District right of way.
Here is a brief example: Appendix F section of the Mountain House
Residential Design Guideline Manual
• Those trees that have overextended, dead and unsightly branches
shall be pruned and trimmed. Damage from wind, etc., shall be
repaired.
• All trees shall be pruned and trimmed only as necessary to maintain
their natural form. Trees shall not be topped, “hat-racked”,
“lollypopped”, sheared, or pruned in any manner which alters the
natural growth habit of the tree.
• Trees shall be pruned to maintain a central leader and to remove
branches that form narrow crotches. Prune trees to maintain permanent
scaffold branches which have a radial orientation and do
not overlay one another. All suckers shall be removed from trees.
• All trees that are located adjacent to streets and/or sidewalks shall
be pruned and trimmed as necessary to maintain a height clearance
of 8 ft. over sidewalks and, 12 ft. over local (inner neighborhood)
streets, and 14 ft. over collector (main neighborhood) streets for
vehicle and pedestrian safety.
• Trees shall be pruned to allow clearance for street light illumination
and to train the trees to eventually rise above the top of the light
fixtures.
• Pruning shall be completed while the tree is dormant (after leaf
fall in autumn)
• Inspect each tree on a continuous basis for cross branches that
may rub, broken branches, damage from mowing equipment, etc.
• Perform "same day" clean-up of all pruned and trimmed material
and dispose of this material off-site.
• The watering of the tree, health, and welfare is the responsibility
of the homeowner.
For the typical homeowner, these requirements are challenging.
The larger trees may be extremely dangerous for homeowners to
personally perform pruning tasks safely. Deferred pruning becomes
equally as dangerous.
Trees that have not been pruned might lead to hazardous limb
failures become unbalanced, and may blow over. Professional
maintenance contractors should be called for this type of pruning.
A Normalized Market With Inventory Shrinking Once Again
By Salah Salah
Hello Mountain House family. I am pleased to bring
you another Market Update.
We are currently still in a “Sellers Market,” I know
that statement might be confusing to some. At the
beginning of the year, we were in a very aggressive
seller’s market with inventory in single digits with
very high demand because of the low-interest rates
and an interest rate hike right around the corner.
Once the interest rates increased, many buyers
paused their search, many were no longer qualified,
or their buying power went down.
In hindsight, homes started sitting on the market
longer. At that time, many sellers noticed the slowdown,
and more homes began hitting the market.
Inventory shot up very fast, and homes sat longer
on the market. We started seeing price reductions
left and right. We went from single-digit inventory
to almost 90 homes on the market within a twomonth
span. As a result, buyers had many options
from which to choose.
What we all witnessed is a shifting market that is
normalizing, not crashing. Demand is still high
for homes that are priced properly. Inventory is
starting to shrink once again. Currently, we have
just 33 homes for sale at the moment. The Real
Estate market is still very healthy.
If you are curious about the value of your home,
our current Market conditions, and interest rates,
feel free to reach out to me anytime. Remember
choosing a Realtor with vast experience listing
homes in your local market will put you in the
best possible position to navigate through these
ever-changing Market conditions..
Home Values
Our Mountain House home values are continuing
to rise. The best and most accurate way to get your
current home value is to talk with a local agent.
Most homeowners are in utter shock at their current
home values! In our ever-evolving digital age, most
homeowners utilize websites that have algorithms
in place to obtain their current home value. Those
sites cannot even remotely keep up with this current
market and are highly inaccurate in most to
all cases. Reaching out to a local and experienced
Realtor is going to be the best approach for an
accurate home value.
Recently Sold by Salah: 720 Jardin Terr, Questa Village. Closed on 9/20/22 For $1,110,000 & $67,500 OVER the ASKING Price. It had 7 Offers and went pending in 7 days. Shea Umbria Plan 1
What Is a Buyer’s Market?
A buyer’s market refers to a
situation in which changes to
the underlying economic conditions
that shape “supply and demand.” It means that
purchasers have an advantage over sellers in price
negotiations. A buyers market occurs when there is
six (6) or more months of Inventory supply available.
What is a Neutral Market?
A Neutral market is when we have three to six (3-6)
months of inventory supply.
What Is a Seller’s Market?
A seller’s market is a market condition characterized
by a shortage of goods available for sale,
resulting in pricing power for the seller. A Seller’s
Market is a term commonly applied to the property
market when low supply meets high demand. A
sellers market equals less than three (3) months
of inventory supply.
What Does Months Of Inventory Mean?
Months of inventory takes into account the number
of homes for sale on the market with recently
sold homes and reflects the
number of months it would
take to sell all homes currently
on the market. You can
calculate months of inventory
by dividing the total number
of homes for sale over the
number of homes sold in
one month.
When months of inventory
are low, it’s a fast-paced market
dominated by buyers and
few sellers. When months of
inventory are high, there are
generally more homes on the
market (dominated by sellers)
with fewer buyers or sales.
Pumpkin Fest and
Food Drive Returns
The Pumpkin Festival is back after the pandemic
Submitted by Colleen Jacobsen, Go2Realty Pros
Drew and I started the Pumpkin Festival in 2012 as a
way to thank our friends and neighbors for allowing
us the opportunity to do business here in Mountain
House. Each year since then we gave away pumpkins
to carve with our kids. That was the foundation of
our event.
Over the years we scaled the event up to become
a huge community wide festival. We were able to
bring in more activities and help support one of our
favorite organizations, Second Harvest of Central
Valley Food Bank.
This year we will bring back our pumpkin give-away,
while supplies last. We will have 3 ponies, a petting
zoo, mechanical bull, a 360 photo booth, a 25ft
rock climbing wall, bouncy houses, DJ and Music
Homecoming Magic
Submitted by Ishaan Machiraju
Mountain House, CA – The prospering High School community
here came together grandly to embrace Mountain House
High School’s ninth annual Homecoming Saturday, September
23, 2022. Ever since 2014, the dedicated leadership team
at Mountain House High School, led by Mr. Feinstein, has
striven to create the best version of this super popular event.
The hard work and effort put in by this team clearly showed,
as the students at Homecoming seemed to have a blast.
Throughout the school week, each grade level at the High
School brought out their “float buildings”, which were large,
complex structures, each symbolizing a Disney character. The
freshmen represented Cinderella, the sophomores depicted
Aladdin, the juniors chose Little Mermaid, and the seniors,
Tangled. Overall, Homecoming’s theme seemed to be Disney-related
and whimsical.
High Schoolers and guests who purchased tickets would show
their ID cards and receipts to Mr. Fobert or Mr. Feinstein to
kick the event off. When my friends and I entered, a large,
grand red carpet lay in front of us where attendees and guests
could take photos. These spots always seemed to gain a lot of
attention as they had long lines throughout the event.
If you walked a little further toward the theater of the High
School, massive food carts serving tacos, sushi, ice cream, and
boba tea catered to many students during the event.
Now onto the main event. A DJ with prominent speakers was
in the middle of the quad, surrounded by many students. Long
Italian lights decorated the tall, skinny trees in the background.
“Are you ready to get this party started!” exclaimed the DJ in
the night. With a swift movement, he turned on the speakers
and started blasting loud music in the quad. Music from pop
to hardcore hip-hop was all played at the event.
Classics included “What You Know About Love” by Pop
Smoke and “Sunroof” by Nicky Youre.
The energy from the High Schoolers as the event went
on was thunderous. As more people came to the event,
long lines formed at the food trucks and the photo booth.
At the quad, students created large, frolicking groups of
people in which one person at the center would dance.
Teens would jump, scream, and enjoy themselves
with their friends as music played melodiously in the
background.
Around 10:15ish, the food trucks slowly started to leave
the area, and the long lines became shorter. While the
energy did slow down, the spirit did not. Everyone still
partied, and the DJ still pumped everyone up. “When
I say ‘Mountain’, you say ‘House!’,” he exclaimed.
“Mountain -- House!” my friends and I clamored.
After a long night filled with spirit and fun, it was time
for the event to end. “We love homecoming,” my friends
in leadership said, “It’s always been a crucial part of
the school spirit here at Mountain House. Without it,
you would feel like a part of the school is missing.”
Delta College announces passing of
longtime trustee Dr. Teresa Brown
Educator served Area 6, including Tracy and Mountain House, since 2008
mhmatters.net
17
STOCKTON – Delta College joins family, friends, and community
members in mourning the death on September 11 of
Trustee Teresa Brown, who served on Delta’s Board of Trustees
for nearly 14 years.
A longtime educator by profession, Dr. Brown was a strong
advocate for Delta College in Area 6, which includes Tracy
and Mountain House.
Dr. Brown was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and grew up in a coal
mining town outside the city before she left to pursue higher
education. Like about half of Delta College students, Dr. Brown
was a first-generation college student.
“My mother finished the eighth grade and went to work for the
Pennsylvania railroad, and my father graduated from high school and went into the military,” she said
in a 2020 candidates forum.
Dr. Brown went on to be a college professor, and her two siblings became a doctor and a lawyer.
“This is just proof that education can change an entire generation that quickly,” she said in 2020. “If we
want to improve the lifestyle, the income, and the quality of life for people, community colleges are the
key to that. Delta College is the closest, safest, least expensive, and best resource for higher education
in San Joaquin County today, and I’m proud to be a part of that.”
Dr. Brown left her childhood home and traveled to West Virginia University where she got an undergraduate
degree in journalism. She then went on to spend 18 years working in news media and public
relations positions.
A self-described lifelong learner, Dr. Brown went back to school yet again, earning masters’ degrees in
Re-Elect
Colin Clements
to the LUSD Board of Trustees
Colin Clements is a CPA with over 25 years
of experience in construction, including
the planning and construction of schools.
These skills remain critical to the District
as it seeks to build three more elementary
schools and additional buildings at the
high school.
• Passed “Measure L” to enable LUSD to complete the high school.
• Planned, designed, and financed six different schools and other facilities.
• Implemented use of “Land Sale Transactions” whereby the district receives more
matching funds from the state without costing the District or the developer any
additional money.
Colin Clements has a history of service to our District that began even before
serving on the Lammersville Unified School District Board:
3 Executive Board Member: Wicklund School Foundation, Bethany School Foundation,
Questa School Fountation, and Mountain House High School Visual and Performing Arts Booster Club
3 Founding Executive Board Member: Mountain House High School Athletic Booster Club
Successes on Behalf of the District Before Joining the LUSD School Board:
3 Ensured that the District received $8 million in matching funds on Bethany Elementary School,
rather than the $4 -$5 million that the District initially appealed for by meeting with members of
the State Allocation Board.
3 Leveraged contacts at the Division of State Architects to quickly resolve a recurring natural gas leak at
Wicklund Elementary School that had been dragging on for approximately six months.
District Successes During Colin’s Tenure on the LUSD School Board:
While a School Board Member cannot take individual credit, there are a number of notable accomplishments
that the District has achieved during his tenure on the Board, including:
• Maintained ranking as the highest performing school district in San Joaquin County.
• Surpassed Livermore schools (based upon CAASPP scores), and closing gap with
Dublin and Pleasanton schools.
• Transitioned to remote learning within 72 hours of Governor mandated lockdown
(45% of schools in California could not even provide regular access to teachers
within four weeks of lockdown).
19 Acres of Land for
MHHS
continued from page 1
land will solve what would likely have soon become
a major problem for the district.
Even before stating the big news, Dr. Nicholas
provided a bit of background. “I’m no historian,”
he began, “but originally in the master plan there
were supposed to be two high schools. It was
changed to one, but bigger,” he said. “Two 45
acre school sites became one 45 acre site,” with a
larger facility on the land. With the school already
nearing capacity in student enrollment, expansion
plans have been in the works for some time.
MHHS currently has about 2,200 students enrolled.
The District estimates they will exceed current
capacity of 2,400 by 2024. The plans in the works
involve an expansion of the existing C classroom
building. The building expansion will ultimately
add eleven (11) additional classrooms, one chem
lab, one bio lab, and a store room.
To aid in this expansion effort, two temporary
portable buildings are being brought in. They will
be positioned at the south west parking lot area.
Theoretically, District leaders could potentially add
buildings on the 19 acre plot. Given that it’s not
quite connected to the rest of the school, however,
consideration is being given to the possibility of
moving some of the various sports fields to the
new land, and building more on the main campus
site. For the time being, they are clearly pleased
to have new options.
New opportunities for 529 plan owners
Submitted by Tom Kelly, Edward Jones
If you want to provide educational opportunities
for your children or grandchildren, you may want
to consider investing in a 529 plan. In recent years,
this plan has gotten more flexible, and potentially
more powerful, than ever.
A key benefit of a 529 plan is that earnings are
generally tax free, provided the money is used for
qualified educational expenses. As the owner of the
plan, you can essentially name any beneficiary you
want, and you’re free to change the beneficiary as
needed. Contribution limits are quite high, so you
can put away considerable sums in a 529 plan – and
you may want to, because college costs have risen
steadily over the years. In fact, for the 2021-’22
academic year, the College Board reports that the
average cost (tuition, fees, room and board) of a
public, four-year college or university was more
than $27,000 for in-state students and nearly
$56,000 for students at private schools.
But 529 plans are no longer just for higher education.
Over the past few years, the rules governing
529 plans have changed, so they can now be used
for:
• K-12 tuition expenses (up to $10,000 per
student, per year),
• Apprenticeship programs registered with the
U.S. Department of Labor, and
• Student loans ($10,000 lifetime limit for
student loan repayments per each 529 plan
beneficiary and another $10,000 for each of the
beneficiary’s siblings.)
And soon, a major change will affect the relationship
between grandparent-owned 529 plans and
the financial aid packages awarded to their grandchildren.
Families applying for aid have not been
required to report grandparent-owned 529 account
assets on the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA). However, under previous rules, you had
to report withdrawals from the grandparent-owned
plans as untaxed student income, which could
reduce aid eligibility by up to 50% of the amount
of cash received.
But that’s changing for the 2024-’25 FAFSA, which
won’t require students to report cash support, including
money taken from a grandparent-owned
529 plan. Instead, a student’s total income amount
will be reported directly from federal income tax
returns. This means that a grandparent-owned 529
plan won’t have any effect on need-based financial
aid eligibility. This benefit to families is already here,
because 2022 will be used as the base year for the
2024-’25 FAFSA, so any withdrawals taken in 2022,
and also going forward, won’t need to be reported
as student income.
With this change, families will now have more
options on using 529 plans without jeopardizing financial
aid. You can generally withdraw any amount
from the aggregate of all 529 plans for higher
education costs, but only the qualified withdrawals
– the ones used for typical education-related
expenses – will be tax-free. The earnings portion
of non-qualified withdrawals are taxable and could
also incur a 10% penalty.
Given the new rules affecting a grandparent-owned
529 plan, you should consult with a financial professional
to determine how this plan can work with
other strategies to help meet educational expenses
while, at the same time, not detracting from the
progress you’d like to make on other important
goals, such as a comfortable retirement.
In any case, consider looking into a 529 plan – it was
already a great tool for education funding, and it can
now offer your family even more options.
Mountain House Power Partners
Business Networking Group
Welcomes En Pointe Dance Studio
The “Mountain House Power Partners” Business Networking
group re-launched in September in its new home at the MH
Library/Town Hall Community Room (TH-1), at 201 E. Main
St in the Mountain House Town Center. The group of local
business professionals, who meet-up each Tuesday morning
from 9-10:30 a.m. in an ongoing effort to assist one another in
building their respective businesses, are pleased to welcome
the newest member to the team, Hazel Maglasang, of En Pointe
Dance Studio.
Ms. Maglasang has been operating En Pointe Dance Studio in
Tracy and Mountain House since the end of 2016. Her studio
consists of some 300 students and is growing still. She recently
took-on young students the new RedRose Montessori school
here in town, as well.
Hazel Maglasang
Each networking meeting of the MH Power Partners is structured and designed for all members
to benefit by working together to help each other through qualified referrals in what’s called
the “Givers Gain” approach.
The BNI (Business Networking Int’l) program dictates that only one representative business
type may be included in the group. There are numerous groups outside of Mountain House, so
business owners interested in becoming involved may still likely do so, even if their category is
taken up in this chapter.
For more info, or to visit a meeting, reach out via Facebook, or email: mhppbni@gmail.com. BNI
welcomes Hazel Maglasang!

Dr. Teresa Brown
continued from page 15
education and theology and, in 1992, she and her
daughter Amber moved to California so she could
obtain her Ph.D. in biblical studies from U.C.
Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union.
Dr. Brown was a pioneer of online education,
teaching online courses as early as 1996. She later
worked as director of online education for the
Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley,
where she taught biblical learning classes. She
later served as a program developer for University
Extension Education at the CSU Stanislaus
Stockton Center.
A resident of Tracy for 20 years, Dr. Brown was
first elected to Delta’s Board of Trustees in 2008
and brought stability during a time of much turnover
on the seven-member Board. She told The
Stockton Record in 2008 that the college needed a
more diverse faculty and staff, and emphasized the
importance of transparency in how public business
is conducted.
As a trustee, Dr. Brown worked to provide access
for south county students. She manifested care
for the College not only in her work on the Board,
but in everyday acts of kindness as well. When
the South Campus at Mountain House opened in
August 2009, she brought blueberry muffins to
share with staff and faculty on the first day.
Dr. Brown frequently attended College functions
with her partner Jim, and her daughter. She was
keen to celebrate the successes of students and
employees.
She was well known as a community college
trustee not only at Delta but throughout the state,
having been instrumental in developing the
Excellence in Trusteeship Program to help new
trustees hone their skills. She served about 10
years as a member of the Advisory Committee on
Educational Services for the Community College
League of California.
Becoming a community college trustee was a steep
learning curve, she said in 2020.
“You have to learn to be a team player, you have
to learn how to get along with others, you have to
learn how to listen, and that’s probably something
I’ve done my whole life…. listen not just to the
words people say, but what’s behind the words
people say,” Dr. Brown said.
Outside of Delta and community colleges, Dr.
Brown was a proud advocate for those with developmental
disabilities, including and especially
her daughter.
“I am saddened by the news of the sudden death
of longtime trustee Dr. Teresa Brown,” said Delta
College Board President Dr. Charles Jennings.
“Her commitment to the San Joaquin Delta Community
College District is commendable as is her
influence in community college issues. Her loss
will be felt statewide, too, as a longtime member
and highly regarded presenter for the Community
Homecoming Successes
Mountain House High Varsity and JV Football Defeat Johansen
Photos by Jose Moreno
The Mountain House Mustangs Varsity Football
team made the most of their opportunities against
a strong but error-prone Johansen Vikings Team
at their September 22, 2022 Homecoming game.
Following a Mustang 56 yard pass play for a
touchdown, Johansen committed four turn-overs,
including three fumbles and one interception, while
an astute and aggressive Mountain House Mustangs
team capitalized on many of the mistakes. In the
end, it was Mountain House with a Homecoming
game victory, defeating Johansen 24-6.
Earlier in the evening, the MHHS JV Football team
shut-out rival Johansen 20-0. All that following a stellar
Homecoming parade that afternoon, celebration of the
Royal Court at the game, and a homecoming celebration
the next evening, these Mustangs are all smiles.
MHHS Cross Country Excels with three
individual winners in a cross country meet
The Mountain House Mustangs Cross Country teams traveled to Ceres River Bluff Park for their first
Conference meet of the season. They had one of the greatest Cross Country race days in school history,
winning 3 out of the 4 races!
The JV Girls finished second in their race, lead by Hana Keiffaber, who came in second overall in a
personal record of 15:03 over the two mile course. Also notable was the PR time of Lavanya Sindhu,
coming in 11th overall and second for the Mustangs, with a big PR of 17:03.
The JB Boys won their race, led by Tirdaud Rejaly, who dominated his race and finished first in a PR
time of 11:41 over two miles. Michael Rivello was second overall, also with a big PR time of 12:06.
The Varsity Girls team was led to victory by Senior and Team Captain Sophia Kwok, who steadily pulled
away from a tough field on the 3 mile course, with an excellent winning time of 21:52. Sadie Baddas
placed 4th overall with a PR time of 23:03.
The Varsity Boys won their first full Conference
meet in school history, led by Team
Captain and Senior Yuji Buczynski, who
won the race overall in a school record time
of 16:37 over the 3 miles. Senior Jerry Kenny
was 6th overall in a time of 17:42, with
Junior Siddarth Putta and Senior Amartya
Poovaiah contributing strong performances.
Overall it was the one of the best team performances
in MHHS Cross Country school
history, and a day that the athletes will not
soon forget. Congratulations to the huge
effort by everyone, including parent volunteers,
to put together an exceptional day!
