Cambridge
Retirement
OUR BELIEFS
Living
We believe in home, that it should be a
place of comfort, rest, and security. We
believe families are sacred—the ones
we inherit and the ones we create. We
believe in seeking balance between
productivity and rest and learning to
find contentment in both. We believe
in human kindness and the power of
working together to accomplish big
goals. We believe in courage, in moving
past comfort zones, and honestly seeking
knowledge from mistakes. We believe
that each day is a gift and miracles
are visible if only we look for them.
COVID-19
UPDATE
fall 2022
Cambridge Retirement Living continues to remain
vigilant in our pursuit of the health and safety of our staff
and our residents in the face of COVID-19 and its variants.
Our restrictions too, remain the same, under the
guidance of the PA Department of Human Services,
and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services.
Masks must be worn, hands must be washed, and social
distancing is to be maintained whenever possible.
But we continue to be thankful for the resilience and
kindness of our residents, their friends and families, and
our staff as we broach new ways to reunite everyone as
safely as possible. We so enjoyed our spring and summer
events and look forward to sharing fall fun with you soon.
We will continue to closely monitor the requirements and
restrictions to stay Covid Safe, but for now let’s continue to
find ways to safely convene! We have missed you deeply, and
we know our residents are grateful to hold you close again!
LETTER from
the
editor

Dear Readers,
I love the water this time of year. The air is subtle
near water, clearer, and all the better to take a moment
for a long breath in perfect solitude.
Woodsmoke. Tall grass.
These smells are the beginning of the season,
the prelude to the bombastic visual displays fall is so
loved for.
Seeing the leaves reflected in the water's surface
is enormously pleasurable for me.
It’s one of nature’s tricks. When I go to museums,
I look for paintings where a colorful forest stands at the
water’s edge, the towering trees reflected in the water.
To see it in a museum is pleasing, to see the same inperson
is a joy.
And it's free for us to enjoy, that is, if we take the
time to enjoy it.
Timing is everything with the leaves. You want
to “peep” them at the grandest moment, when the
colors are most saturated and before they've dried, and
the color has faded.
Where we live, this time is the third week of
October.
It’s then that I strap a camera over my shoulder,
grab a coffee and a paper notebook, and set out on the
mile trail that takes me to the river.
It's a fairly winding sort of river so there are
many good places to sit. I prefer a big rock but anywhere
dry will do.
During summer these rocky banks belong to
the fishermen who arrive early in the morning. They
stake fishing poles into the soft bank. They wait in the
predawn darkness for hungry fish to bite.
But by the third week of October, the banks have
cleared. The fishermen are well into the forests for deer
season, and songbirds, too, have found other places so
the air is quiet.
I can stay out here because I’ve pulled my
favorite wool sweater from the brown box in my closet
where it’s been waiting for me.
It's a peaceful vantage. Sitting on a cool rock in a
warm sweater, I enjoy the visual splendor of the season.
I take a big sip of coffee.
In a green forest each leaf is the same, but
in October everything changes. Fall is the great
differentiator. It is the season when nature goes off in
directions, like fireworks.
I train my eyes on one of the sparks, a single leaf
detached from the branch. It is airborne, a deep red –
my favorite of all the leaf colors.
It turns in the wind as it falls.
After a few moments it lands upon the water. I
set my coffee on the rock and follow the leaf as it starts
to travel with the current.
Then it’s gone.
"In a green forest
each leaf is the
same, but in October
everything changes."
Of the four seasons, fall is particularly loved by
Americans. It’s easy to see why. Our summers are hot!!!
Fall refreshes us.
September arrives. One day it’s blazing, and then
the next we’re pleasantly cooled by an autumn breeze.
That fall feeling never fails to revive me, to renew
my strength as I work and prepare for winter.
We hope you enjoy this irresistible season, and
that you join us in saying Hello to Fall!
-Lance Knickerbocker
WHEN HOME IS NOT ENOUGH
&
at
Cambridge Retirement Living is proud to present our new Hospice Suites, courtesy of VITAS. Our Cambridge Hillside
room is already prepared, while our Cambridge Falls location will be ready by October 1st. Exclusively available to
VITAS Hospice, from the comfort of your local Cambridge.
When hospice patients in Greater
Pittsburgh need care beyond what can
be provided at home, The VITAS suites at
Cambridge Falls and Cambridge Hillside
are a home away from home.
The décor, ambiance and staff are
unlike what you experience in a hospital
setting. Equipment is minimal and kept
out of sight, and each room is crafted
with a home like experience in mind,
including sleeping arrangements for
family members.
The goal is to make the patient
comfortable, address symptoms and
provide routine hospice care at a lower
cost than skilled nursing or 24-hour
private-duty care. When symptoms are
under control, the resident returns to
their normal living arrangement, while
continuing to receive support from the
VITAS team.
As the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care, VITAS has a unique understanding
of the needs of patients at the end of life. A quiet environment reduces stress for
fragile patients and anxious families, with space for family gatherings, prayer,
meditation and quiet conversation.
-High-quality end-of-life care delivered in a private setting
-Routine hospice services provided by VITAS staff
-24-hour basic-needs care provided by Cambridge Falls and Cambridge Hillside
-Overnight accommodation, kitchenette, and private bathroom for family members
RESIDENT
FEATURE
Meet Lois Fertick of Cambridge Ebensburg
For each issue of Cambridge Retirement Living, we like to highlight an amazing
resident from one of our Cambridge communities. We intend to capture their story
and receive wisdom from their amazing lives. Lois is no exception!
Lois Fertick was born March 4th, 1930, in Mundy’s Corner
Pennsylvania. She was the oldest of 3 children. Sadly, one of her brothers
passed away, but the other brother lives in Bradford, PA. When we asked
about her childhood, Lois told us that, because her brother loved dogs, she
always had little dogs at home. And she remembers that on Sundays their
family would go out for ice cream.
In a devastating turn of events, when Lois was only 8 years old,
she contracted Polio. The time spent in the hospital and years of medical
problems made it very difficult for her to keep up with her school studies.
As a result, when she entered high school as a freshman, so very behind
everyone else, she decided not to finish. Unfortunately, at that time, there
was no home tutoring available.
Her Polio affected her right leg, but Lois reminded us she did not let
it interfere with her ability to get a job or to raise a family.
16

She worked at Kristy’s in Johnstown,
PA and a restaurant in Mundy’s Corner, PA
(neither business currently exists anymore).
It was one fateful day, when Lois was 21 years
old, working Mundy’s Corner restaurant
when she met her wonderful husband. They
were married 35 years and raised 5 beautiful
children.
“When the Polio vaccine came out
you can bet our children were probably the
first children in line to receive the vaccine.”
Lois loves her children and spoke
fondly of their memories together. As a
family they were very involved in horses and
their collected interest continued to grow
and grow until they had their own barn. Lois
herself helped her husband build their barn
and indoor riding area, so their children and
horses were ready when horse show season
started.
Horse show season was a big deal
in the Fertick household. Their weekends
were filled with horse shows and family
togetherness! They even spent their vacation
at the Cambria County Fair, showing horses
and enjoying the company of the many
friends that had the same interest in all things
equestrian. Lois felt she played the most
"Her Polio affected
her right leg, but
Lois...did not let it
interfere with her
ability to get a job or
to raise a family..."
important role at the horse shows. It was up
to her to not only make sure her children’s
show clothes were ready for each class they
were entered in, but also that everyone was
well fed. An important role indeed!
Though Lois’s love of horses led her
to being a 4H leader, she also enjoyed other
hobbies like crocheting and making wedding
cakes (which she provided for many a bride!).
But Lois’s baking went far beyond wedding
cakes. During the holidays, Christmas, and
Easter, it was time to get out the candy molds
to make dozens of chocolate candies that her
whole family enjoyed.
“And I cannot forget the cookies!” She
said, “Dozens and dozens of cookies being
baked, flour and cookie dough everywhere.”
They made so many that a large amount of
cookies were frozen and bought out for the
holiday gatherings.
In February of 2022 Lois became
a resident of Cambridge, Ebensburg. She
wanted us to know that she finds the staff to
be very friendly and helpful. And she truly
enjoys the live music entertainment that
Cambridge provides. “One of my favorite
spots is the community room with their large
windows. I can sit and watch traffic, and
maybe a horse trailer or two will pass by…”
We are so honored to have Lois at
Cambridge Ebensburg, and so touched to
hear her amazing story! A huge thank you
to Glenda Ritchick for helping us gather her
story.
10 WARNING SIGNS OF ALZHEIMER'S
AND THE WALK TO END
ALZHEIMER'S 2022
PRESENTED BY THE ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION
In Pennsylvania, there are more than
280,000 people living with Alzheimer’s
disease and over 500,000 caregivers,
according to the 2022 Alzheimer’s
Disease Facts and Figures report.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common
form of dementia, a general term
for memory loss and other cognitive
abilities serious enough to interfere with
daily life.
There are 10 Warning Signs of
Alzheimer’s, according to the Alzheimer’s
Association, which include memory loss
that disrupts daily life, challenges in
planning or solving problems, difficulty
completing familiar tasks, confusion
with time or place, trouble understanding
visual images or spatial relationships,
new problems with words in writing or
speaking, misplacing things and losing
the ability to retrace steps, decreased or
poor judgment, withdrawal from work or
social activities, and changes in mood
or personality. If you or a loved one is
experiencing any of these symptoms,
the Alzheimer’s Association advises you
to schedule an appointment with your
doctor.
Early detection and diagnosis is
critical. The mission of the Alzheimer’s
Association is to lead the way to end
Alzheimer's and all other dementia —
by accelerating global research, driving
risk reduction and early detection, and
maximizing quality care and support.
One major fundraiser of the
Alzheimer’s Association is the Walk to
End Alzheimer’s, which is the world’s
largest event to raise awareness and
funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and
research. Walks take place across the
world and locally in the fall each year.
The Alzheimer’s Association Greater
Pennsylvania Chapter is holding events
in local communities across its 59 county
coverage area each weekend through
November.
On Walk day, participants honor those
affected by Alzheimer’s with the Promise
Garden ceremony — a mission-focused
experience that signifies solidarity in
the fight against the disease. The colors
of the Promise Garden flowers represent
people’s connection to Alzheimer’s —
their personal reasons to end the disease.
Those who are living with Alzheimer’s or
another dementia carry the blue flower,
while people who serve as caregivers
carry the yellow flower. Those who have
lost a loved one to the disease carry the
purple flower and the orange flower is
carried by those who support the vision
of the Alzheimer’s Association—a world
without Alzheimer’s and all other
dementia.
The Alzheimer’s Association
encourages local communities to come
together and fight for the first survivor.
