our beliefs
We believe in home, that it should be a place of comfort, rest, and security.
We believe families are sacred—the ones we inherit and the ones we create.
We believe in seeking balance between productivity and rest and learning
to find contentment in both. We believe in human kindness and the power
of working together to accomplish big goals. We believe in courage, in moving
past comfort zones, and honestly seeking knowledge from mistakes. We
believe that each day is a gift and miracles are visible if only we look for them.
the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services masks are now to be
worn only when an outbreak is present.
While masks are optional, we also ask that any visitors experiencing
We are so thankful for the kindness of our residents and their families
as we have broached new ways to reunite everyone as safely as possible.
We so enjoyed our summertime fun and look forward to sharing
LETTER
From the Editor
a moment of tranquility
Walking the dog one fall morning, we came
upon a new cafe in our neighborhood.
It looked very pleasant, exactly the way a
cafe should look. Much care had been taken
with lively plants and new paint so that
the little cafe didn’t look anything like the
abandoned pump station it had been.
As we stood there, Pigeon and I -- Pigeon is
my little dog’s name -- a gentle rain started
up and raised our interest in the cafe to the
level of action.
Over the sodden leaves we stepped and
crossed the wet street.
The cafe had been finely done. The main
wall was gone, and clear windows installed.
You could see deep into the bright cafe. It
looked warm and dry.
Two women sat in the window. They
resembled one another very closely except
for a clear distance in age that I guessed
to be twenty years or so. It was a simple
mother-daughter date on a fall morning.
Just above the window in saffron wooden
letters installed on a navy-blue backing:
Grizelda’s Cafe
I thought that was a fantastic name for a cafe.
Was it really someone’s name? I thought
of a person -- half monster, half queen. (I
learned later Grizelda was the nickname the
female proprietor gave to the “person” she
was before she had her morning coffee.)
A sign on the door welcoming dogs
encouraged the two of us, so we went in.
The cafe was doing good business. There
were two baristas steaming milk, slicing
bread for the toaster, as a cashier worked
hurriedly, dispensing change and moving
baked goods from the glass display into
brown paper sacks for customers to take
away.
“Good morning,” she said to me as we
entered. “Your dog is very cute.”
She had the friendly, confident air of
someone who was very busy but very
capable in their position.
Thank you, I said, and looked down at the
little furry girl. Her tail was wagging -- the
person ahead of us, a man in a raincoat, had
ordered a bacon egg and cheese croissant
and the smell of the seared bacon filled the
air.
I ordered two almond croissants and an
earl gray tea for my wife. We watched the
baristas work as we waited. They wore
matching green bandanas and talked easily
as steam shot into the air and milk poured
into dark espresso. It was a good team for
the new cafe.
Order for Lance and Pigeon!
We grabbed our brown paper sack, shared
a quick word of thanks, and went out the
door for home.
All the kids in our small neighborhood
attend an old public school and we walked
along the school’s playground edge as we
went. It had stopped raining completely.
The day was beginning its sprint into late
morning.
All the time we were walking Pigeon kept
bringing her nose to the bag of baked
goods. Did my dog suddenly like almond
croissants? Could a dog have almonds?
Funny girl.
We crossed the playground and the brick
school beyond. I watched leaves float into
the shallow pools beneath vacant tire
swings. I had loved pushing my classmates
on the tire swings and the tranquil scene
made me tired and happy. I felt grateful for
my life.
It was good luck to have happy memories
that far back. I knew enough to know not
everyone did.
Back at home I unwrapped the wax paper
and brought out its contents on our dining
room table. The little dog watched patiently
with her rump on the floor and her nose in
the air.
“What’s this? Something for the little one?”
Beside the croissants someone had put two
strips of thick cut bacon. Boy, I thought, as I
fed the bacon to the dog, we won’t be going
to Starbucks again any time soon. I opened
my phone and tapped in a five-star review
for the new cafe on google.
They had earned it.
We hope you enjoy this issue of Cambridge
Times. This fall we were thinking of the
simple moments, the tranquil moments, the
moments of care and reflection.... We wish
the same for you.
STAFF
Every issue we take pride in highlighting our newest staff
members of Cambridge Retirement Living. From our Executive
Directors, to our Activities Directors, our Maintenance Staff,
and our excellent Chefs, each of these people make up the core
of what it means to be Cambridge. Through these interviews,
we hope to learn a little more about them and to share their
amazing stories with you.
JOELEEN JOHNSTON
executive director of Cambridge Pointe
Joeleen Johnson grew up on Conneaut Lake in
Pennsylvania, only an hour and twenty minutes away
from Cambridge Pointe where she now serves as the
Executive Director.
Joeleen is married to her husband
Shawn, and together they have three
boys, Kyle, Kaleb and Jonathan as well
as two daughter-in-laws, Delilah and
Caroline. Joeleen tells us that she’s blessed
to have two grandchildren, Malaya (3
years old) and Kam (2 years old), “they
are the love of my life”.
Besides being an amazing
grandmother, Joeleen became a certified
Nursing Assistant in 2005. She decided
in 2011 to continue on for nursing and
achieved her LPN. She longed to find
a way to help others and decided that
she enjoyed Personal Care as a Wellness
Nurse! She later went on for her PCHA
(Personal Home Care Administrator)
License this past year!
When she’s not at Cambridge or
chasing her grandkids around, Joeleen loves to spend time
with her whole family for Football Season (she’d like to
shout out “Go Steelers!”), traveling, and relaxing at the
beach.
She tells us that her favorite thing about working
with seniors is “the stories they tell when given the
opportunity. The love and appreciation I feel from my
residents makes any stressful day worth it.” We certainly
appreciate you Joeleen, welcome to the team!
JENIFER BURROWS
executive director of Cambridge Warren
Jenifer Burrows was born and raised
in Warren, PA so she knows her community
well as the Executive Director of Cambridge
Warren.
Jenifer worked in retail until she
was 16 years old, and after speaking with
her sister, decided to become a medicine
technician. She aided at a local assisted living
facility and fell in love with the work there.
Jenifer has a 25-year-old son, and
in her spare time she soaks up as much
outdoor time as possible. Be that riding her
motorcycle, kayaking, or just relaxing in the
sun.
Her favorite thing about working with
the senior community is their honesty and
loyalty. She told us she loves “listening to
their stories of their childhood, adulthood as
well as their working experiences.” She loves
how loyal they are to their caregivers, and
how honest and empathetic they are.
Thank you for sharing your story,
Jenifer, we can’t wait to see what you do at
NOT SO SCARY DIY
COMMUNITY ROCK SNAKE
Several months ago, Cambridge Warren introduced the idea to us, to have their
residents create a “Community Rock Snake”. After a little research, we fell in love
with the idea, especially after seeing their creativity shine. Some neighborhoods
even leave up a sign to let you know to participate. We thought this was the perfect,
community focused, not-so-scary DIY to get you crafting this Halloween!
Start by hunting for a head! Look
for a rock that has a snake-head like
shape to it, and get to painting! Then
you and your neighbors can collect
and paint as many rocks as you’d
like to add to the body of the snake.
14
Our residents at Cambridge Falls
also got in on the idea! Here's one
of our residents showing off her
beautiful painting.
Atascadero Lake Park has a Rock
Snake that stretches over 1,200
feet! It started during Covid as a
way to safely bring the community
together. They’re in line for the
Guiness Book of World Record!
It has been reported that a town in
England is also aiming for the record
and was nearing 3,000 rocks in June.
Maybe your neighborhood can give
it a try for the world record! Happy
crafting, and Happy Halloween!
Kenny
RESIDENT FEATURE
If there’s one thing to be said about this amazing gentleman,
it’s that he’s a family man through and through. When
asked about his favorite things, hobbies, and growing up,
we were touched to find similar answers to each question.
Kenny (Kenneth) was born January 25th,
1963, at the Corry Memorial Hospital in Corry, PA.
That’s only a two-minute drive to Cambridge Corry,
where Kenny now resides. Kenny is the youngest of
nine children in his incredible blended family. His
siblings (in order of oldest to youngest) are Sandra,
Andrew (Sonny), Phillip, Chris, Barbara, David,
Susan, and Richard.
Being the youngest, by the time Kenny was
born at Corry Memorial Hospital, some of his siblings
were married with children of their own. Even as a
young man Kenny always loved when his sibling’s
families would come to visit. Uncle Kenny would get
to play with his nieces and nephews, who were closer
to his age than his siblings!
A favorite fact we learned from our interview
was that Kenny has one nephew born just two days
after him! Of course, he has many more that are
younger than him as well. Imagine being able to call
your peer, “Uncle!”.
Kenny and his parents, Naomi and Kenneth
Sr, moved quite a bit in his childhood, living near
Corry and Spartansburg, but also all the way down
the coast to various towns in Florida.
“Uncle Kenny” started school at Sparta
Merged and was soon a proud graduate of Corry Area
High School in 1982. To this day Kenny remembers
many of his teachers and classmates and so enjoys
seeing them and catching up when he and his family
are out and about in Corry.
The amazing thing about family is that it
encompasses so many people and communities. I’m
sure if you asked his old classmates and teachers,
they’d tell you that there’s no one like Kenny to make
everyone feel remembered and loved and brought
together into one big family.
16
When we asked about Kenny’s favorite things,
the Spartansburg Fair came up almost immediately.
But what we found most special is that, while he loves
anything connected to the fair, he especially loves all
of his family and friends who he sees there! On top of
that, Kenny has an eye for crafting and painting and
often enters his designs at the fair with the result of
many ribbons and prizes!
Besides the fair Kenny also enjoys fishing,
bingo, playing cards, corn hole, and has a particular
interest in holiday decorations, especially Christmas.
We were honored to have Kenny move to
Cambridge Corry, February 17th, 2017, where he has
been making every day brighter with his infectious
smile. At Cambridge Corry, Kenny loves playing
bingo, participating in crafts, painting, and coloring
(much to our delight!). He also enjoys all of the parties
and picnics. Not only for the food, decorations, music
and dancing, but he once again highlighted the joy of
having friends and family come to visit and share in
the fun.
Kenny’s ‘family’ extends to furry friends as
well! As he’s thrilled whenever our pet friends and
their humans come to visit.
He loves calling and talking to family and
friends who have moved away. He cherishes the
cards, letters, and pictures from them. He loves
the little things, like hot fudge sundaes with all the
fixings. And running to hug family members at their
big reunions. Anywhere and everywhere Kenny goes,
you are sure to meet someone who knows him, loves
him, and wants to stop to say hello.
Thank you so much to Kenny's sister
for generously providing us with this interview.
