City2Surf is back and
businesses are thrilled
• By Natalie Pham
NEW BRIGHTON business
owners are excited about a wave
of people who will descend on
the area on a Sunday in March.
The iconic Les Mills City2Surf
will revert back on March 19,
2023 to the original route,
starting from Latimer Square
at 9am, continuing along New
Brighton Rd and finishing at
Rawhiti Domain.
This will mark the 50th year
since the first event in 1974.
Due to the damage the
February 22, 2011 earthquake
caused to the original route,
the route was changed from
starting at Pioneer Stadium and
finishing at Ferrymead Historic
Park.
Switch Espresso owner Donna
Stewart said it is great to see the
event coming back to where it
all began.
Stewart, who has lived in New
Brighton for 20 years, said many
businesses will benefit from the
number of people taking part in
the event.
“There’s always a flow-on
effect. It’s like the Coast To
Coast, people always come out
and grab something to eat. Or to
support their friends and family
who participate in the event.”
FUN RUN FACTS
• Since the start of City2Surf
the distance participants will
have covered is equal to 120
times around the world.
• And they will have burnt off
an estimated 188,730,000
calories.
• The City2Surf is also
a fundraiser. Since its
inauguration the event has
raised over $5 million in
benefits for local charities.
Community board elect urges
youth to get politically involved
• By Natalie Pham
NEW community board
member Alex Hewison is hoping
to get more young people into
local politics.
The North New Brighton resident
was 18 when he got elected
as the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-
Linwood Community board
member two weeks ago.
Hewison received 3464 votes
in total, 1205 votes behind Jo
Zervos (4079).
“I grew up with the broken
roads and flooded streets, so I’ve
always wanted to be someone
who people can talk to,” he said.
That is why infrastructure is
top of his priority list, along with
improving community well-being
and pushing for more safety
measures to prevent crime.
The former deputy head boy
at Shirley Boys’ High School
believed his background of
growing up with the issues that
the community is facing was his
big drawcard.
“They’ve gotten someone
that they can relate to. And I’m
young and energetic, so I have
the drive to get things done.”
Hewison was interested in
politics at a young age after
seeing a lack of communication
when his primary school merged
Kelly Barber
Independent for Burwood
with three others.
So it was not a surprise for his
family when he announced he
was going to run for the community
board.
“I’m quite a loud person and I
talk quite a bit, so I saw politics
as something that I would go
into. I also took lots of leadership
roles in high school, so
this seems like the next move,”
Hewison said.
The first-year university student
had a “really hard think”
about whether he could be a
good representative for the community
before deciding to run
mid last year.
Hewison said he had to weigh
up a number of things as “a
young person”, including juggling
his online study and parttime
job.
“But it was important that I
took a step forward.
“Even if I didn’t win it, people
could still understand that they
could take the stand and get
their voices heard.”
He is urging more young
people to get involved in local
government.
FRESH VOICE:
Eighteen-year-old
Waitai Coastal-
Burwood-Linwood
Community board
member Alex
Hewison says
his top priorities
are improving
infrastructure and
community wellbeing.

Said Hewison: “The turn-out
rate is getting up there again but
it’s still very low, as well as the
council’s approval rating. The
reason is there’s a whole disconnection
between our communities
and the city council at the
moment.
“The whole idea of democracy
is getting everyone from different
races and life. It’s important
to have a wide variety.”
Hewison is now studying
law, international relations,
and economics at Victoria
University.
Coastal Ward city councillor
Celeste Donovan encouraged
organisers of the event to connect
with local businesses.
“Some of the local businesses do
have mobile caravans. So some of
those food providers will have an
opportunity to come in and cater
for the events if that is something
they want to be a part of.”
Donovan was pleased to hear
about the return of the event to
the eastern suburbs.
“There’s very few places in the
world that have a nature environment
that runs from one side of
the city to the other.
“This sort of event can really
showcase what we have as a city
and also in the east.”
VOLUNTEER: It Takes A Village Hub is struggling to meet the high
since April.
Baby charity calls
out for donations
• By Natalie Pham
SOARING living
costs have driven a
“humongous” increase in
demand for baby supplies
at a charity.
It Takes A Village Hub
has put together more
than 500 bundles for
babies and toddlers in the
past six months.
At this rate, the charity
is on the way to hit the 800
mark “easily” by December.
Each baby and toddler
bundle contain essentials
– from a newborn child up
to five years old – including
clothing, bedding,
toiletries, toys and books.
However, included items
depend on stocks of donations.
The charity is struggling
to meet the demand for
consumable items like
toothbrushes and toothpaste,
nappies and wipes,
as they are one-off uses
and low in donation.
Co-director Danielle
Petterd said requests for
these items make up to 90
per cent of applications.
“An unexpected bill
could put families behind
for weeks. A bag of nappies
could cost up to $18
per week. So to be able
to put that money onto
power bills or pay off debts
are a huge things for our
families.”
The charity put together
more than 600 bundles
last year. Before the pandemic,
they used to do 20
bundles a month.
“(The) number of
families in need has
hugely increased since
Covid-19 and living costs
increased. It has just been
absolutely insane to see a
huge number of families
in need out there,” Petterd
said.
Latest figures in a new
ASB report show household
weekly living costs
are expected to increase
by $110 over the next 12
months, with two-thirds
of the cost from either
non-tradable goods/services
or debt servicing.
Petterd is urging people
to donate their baby clothing
so the charity can continue
to help struggling
families.
“Without donations like
these, we wouldn’t be able
to do what we do for the
families.”
The charity recently
cleared a wait list of
ten families in need of
newborn clothing. But
Petterd said people are still
coming through the door
asking for help.
The demand for baby
supplies also outgrew she
and co-director Jess Roberts’
garages.
Last year, with city
council help, they managed
to secure a commercial
premise in New
Brighton.
Petterd said in hindsight
it was funny to see how
they were able to fit all of
the items in their houses
for so long.
The charity was born in
2017 as a way to share baby
supplies and resources to
families that needed “a
little extra help”.
just Charlie. He has slotted
into the McMasterHeap
family incredibly well,
introducing himself to both
dogs fearlessly and Maximus,
our big ginger DSH. He
is confident but sensible,
cuddly and gentle (he allows
the tummy rub), all in all
perfect for us. He’s already a
FB favourite.
I didn’t know much about
the Mandalay breed. It was
originally developed in NZL
in the 1970’s, a Burmese
mating to a Domestic Short
Haired cat.
Our Kittens lineage comes
from Australia in which
the initial cross was that
of a Burmese and a British
Shorthair. There were six
kittens in his litter and his dad
was a black Mandalay and his
mum a Burmese.
Next in the line up is our
overweight loveable
ginger cat Maximus. He
loves a good sleep, all
day in a sunny spot, at
night under the covers,
rarely seen patrolling the
section or working out.
Last week he was booked
in for a dental scale and
polish and full groom
out. He’s impossible to
attempt brushing his
teeth and he can’t eat
Prescription Diet Dental
dry due to being solely
on weight loss diet,
so regular dentistry is
required to keep his teeth and gums healthy.
He is primarily Dylan’s cat and sticks to Dylan
when he’s home. A loveable rogue who lives
the easy life.
Macy, our two and half year old Black
Labrador, is again “my dog”. Her keen
interests are sniffing out apples on our daily
walks, retrieving anything that is thrown,
swimming, and bodysurfing. She loves any
form of exercise and is so obedient she’s
walked off-leash everywhere. She hates
making a mistake. Most
days she’s seen either in
reception at McMaster
& Heap or pounding the
tracks and roads around
Hagley Park, several times
a day.
Our beautiful Lola turned
13 on 30th September.
She is nothing short of
an angel and adored by
most that know her. Again
a FB favourite. She’s in
great health considering
she is a kidney cancer
survivor. She can still
manage a good hour’s
walk everyday and a swim. She still
flies North on holiday with us and
is often seen consulting with me
in my consult room. She definitely
puts dogs at ease, calms the
anxious, fearful ones and socialises
with the puppies. She is the kindest
most gentle dog there is and we
are all better people having her in
our life.
I think four pets is a good
number to stop at for
now. We are very blessed
to have these precious
souls in our family.
Safe speed
neighbourhoods
Way safer for everyone
We’re making it safer around all schools
and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Whether you’re visiting whānau and friends,
letting tamariki walk, scoot or bike to
school, or driving to work or home again,
you should be able to do it safely.
Lower speeds save lives and prevent
serious injuries. Regardless of the cause
of a crash, speed is the difference between
someone being able to walk away relatively
unharmed or being seriously injured
or killed.
Working towards safer speeds
When everyone travels a bit slower people feel safer to
use the street, and walk, scoot or bike to parks, schools
and local shops.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have changed the
way speed limits are set. This gives us an opportunity
to implement an area-wide approach for consistency,
especially around schools.
Speeds also need to reflect the environment of the
street, and our neighbourhood roads support speeds
of 40km/h or lower.
Thursday October 20 2022 7
Planned speed changes
We’re planning to reduce speeds from 50km/h to 30km/h around all schools and 40km/h in
neighbourhood streets, especially those around schools. We’ll start with areas shown on
the map, then roll out more streets over the next ten years as funding allows.
Overcoming the hurdles to be a para
champion and teaching badminton
• By Natalie Pham
CARRIE WILSON has
made huge progress since a
catastrophic leg injury looked
set to wreck her badminton
career.
Eight years ago, she had an
“excruciating” pain in her back
while executing an overhead
badminton shot.
“It just went ‘crack, pop’ and I
passed out,” she said.
This left Wilson with a permanent
injury – a prolapsed
L4-5 disc in her spine which also
caused a paralysis in her lower
right leg.
The sudden loss of her leg
caused the 42-year-old to go
through a period of grief, but
it did not stop her from getting
back on court.
She then spent a year after that
to undergo three back surgeries
and another year in a pool learning
to walk again.
‘A lot of time I felt like giving
up. My friends said that
I’m strong but I don’t have
a choice. This is who I am
now.’
– Carrie Wilson
“Once I was able to walk, my
next goal was to get back to the
court,” Wilson said.
Next month, she is among two
New Zealand athletes who are
going to compete in the Badminton
World Federation Para Badminton
World Championships
in Tokyo, Japan.
“It’s quite daunting because
it’s my first world championship.
I also find that being the only
South Island para badminton
player quite challenging because
I can’t train with a squad or
anything,” she said.
While the disability is new for
her, badminton was not.
Her grandmother played it
back in the day, and so did her
mother and two older sisters. But
Wilson was the only one that
took badminton as far as she
had.
Wilson started playing for
Badminton Canterbury when
LOSS: The pain in her leg did not stop Carrie Wilson from getting back on court. She will
compete in the Badminton World Federation Para Badminton World Championships in Tokyo.
she was 12 and later got selected snapping.
in the senior division before the It was so painful that Wilson
injury.
asked doctors to amputate her
“It was the peroneal nerve that leg.
was squashed. They said that it “But they refused because they
might come back over 2 years,” can’t amputate a perfectly good
she said.
leg. There’s nothing wrong with
“I did rehab and really tried. I my leg, it’s just my brain.”
even did mirror work to trick my So Wilson trained herself to
brain. But two years went by and play with left-handed footwork,
no improvement.”
but she would immediately flip
When Wilson first came back as soon as the games began.
back after the injury, she went “My footwork flipped back because
I’ve been playing this sport
through a lot of pain and the
braces on her leg would keep for so many years,” she said.
CHAMPIONSHIP: Wilson (left, back row) won one gold and
two silvers in the 2022 Oceania Championships. Front row:
After receiving a high-quality
foot drop brace through ACC,
Wilson decided to adapt a new
footwork which requires her
moving the non-injured leg
forward to get out of certain
positions.
However the new technique,
along with the medication
designed to slow the brain down
from sending signals, cause a
delay in her response time.
“I get frustrated on the court
because I know that I could do
take the shots and I know what it
supposed to feel like,” she said.
“When I put my leg behind
me, I don’t see or feel it so I have
to trust that it’s there and it’ll
catch me.”
The condition also affects
her ability to distinguish touch
sensation.
“You could stab my leg with a
knife and I wouldn’t feel a thing,
but if a feather touches it, I would
go through the roof because it’s
painful.”
Wilson also transitioned from
a full-time to relief teacher because
she does not know if she is
going to have a good or bad day.
“A lot of time I felt like giving
up. My friends said that I’m
strong but I don’t have a choice.
This is who I am now.”
Para badminton was not a
thing in New Zealand until she
got back from Mexico in 2019.
“I looked it up and saw it
on the official website. I then
checked if I was qualified and I
did.”
So Wilson started her training
and competed for the first
time as a para badminton player
in Oceania Para Badminton
Championships 2020, where she
snatched the gold medal for SL4
women’s singles.
Two months ago, she managed
to win SL3-SU5 mixed doubles
in the same tournament. Wilson
was also the runner-up in SL4
women’s singles and SL3-SU5
women’s doubles.
SL4, or standing lower, is for
players who have a lower limb
impairment. To participate in a
SL3-SU5 event, the classification
number of two players when
combined must be smaller than
eight.
But competitive tournament
like this also means an almost
sleepless night for Wilson.
“Because I can’t feel my leg and
I don’t know where it is in space,
it doesn’t hurt. But when I stop
playing, that’s when the nerves
start firing.
“It’s just a price that I pay
because badminton is my life.
It’s like my rehab for my mental
health and well-being.”
The athlete is now coaching
para badminton youth and
wheelchair development sessions
at Badminton Canterbury.
“It’s not an easy sport to pick
up when you have disability. So
it’s great seeing them going in
the court and the joy that they
have when they hit the shuttlecock.”
Wilson and para badminton
athlete Thomas Slade have received
more than $1300 through
their Givealittle page, which was
set up with a goal to raise $8000
to support the players and staff
travelling to Japan.
The team is scheduled to leave
on October 29.
After what has been a hectic and jammed packed Term 3 we have finally shut the
gate and left for a well earned two week break. Ākonga/students have worked hard
throughout the term and have achieved excellent results academically, culturally and
in sport. It was wonderful to attend the Performing Arts extravaganza “This is Me” in
the last week of term and experience the depth and breadth of the talent of the full
cast. Ākonga from across the kura graced the stage and demonstrated an excellence
often not seen except upon the professional stage. Our thanks to kaimahi Con and
Andrew for inspiring our ākonga to excel in this space!
Sadly, incidents of online bullying and cell phone misuse are growing. This abuse is
having an extremely negative effect on many rangitahi. The time has come for the
hard conversations around safe cell phone use at kura. We are very keen to hear
from whanāu and ākonga about their experiences with cyberbullying. Kaimahi/staff
have voiced their strong concern that cell phones are often:
1. Disrupting the learning of ākonga.
2. Being used to bully ākonga.
3. Distracting ākonga during classes.
4. Contributing to addictive and harmful behaviour in a number of rangatahi.
5. Being used to film fights that are then uploaded to social media to shame, hurt,
humiliate and harm victims of assaults.
Understanding the level of the problem requires a community conversion and a
collective commitment to positive intervention because many of our rangitahi are
experiencing trauma as a result of online bullying. In Term 4 we will be:
• Reviewing the Haeata Cell Phone Policy
• Listening to ākonga voice
• Listening to whānau voice
• Listening to our community voice
• Reviewing the statistics on harm
• Planning strategically for a safe way forward for our ākonga when using cell phones
at kura/school
Consultation about cell phone use begins in Week 2 of Term
4 2022. We look forward to your responses to our community
survey which will be provided online via HAIL and in hard copy
if required. It is only by working together that we will be able to
make a positive change to protect our ākonga from the bullying
they say they are experiencing.
Term 4 is a very busy term for our kura. Our focus will be on:
• Attendance
• Uniform
• NCEA Final Assessments
• Prizegiving preparation
• Whanāungatanga
• Whanāu Hui
Te Whakatakaka O Te Ngarehu O Ahi Tamatea
As part of our learning journey in our whānau reo class ‘He Reo Tipu, He Reo
Ora’ we have been exploring pū rākau around the kōrero tuku iho, cultural
narratives of this whenua.
We have been learning about Tamatea Pōkai Whenua and the creation story
behind Hanmer Springs, Te Whakatakaka O Te Ngarehu O Ahi Tamatea.
Tamatea Pōkai Whenua was a fearless explorer and a tipuna of Kahungunu.
One of his great explorations brought him to Te Waipounamu. On one of
these journeys the waka Takitimu was wrecked in Murihiku.
Tamatea Pōkai Whenua began his long, cold, arduous journey home. He rested
at Rāpaki and realised he and his people needed help. He sent forth a karakia to
the renowned Te Arawa tohunga, Ngatoroirangi.
At the time Ngatoroirangi and his people were resting at the foot of Tongariro.
He heard the karakia and sent his two sisters, Te Pūpū and Te Hōata to help by
taking fire to Tamatea Pōkai Whenua.
The sisters could change themselves into fireballs. They sped along the
landscape gouging out the riverbed of the Wanganui River. Leaping across
Raukawa Moana, Cook Strait to Whakatū, Nelson and travelling on until they
reached Kā kōhatu Whakarakaraka a Tamatea Pōkai Whenua, the Port Hills
where they sped along the top of the hills until they reached Tamatea at Rāpaki.
Tamatea and his people were saved and followed the warm path all the way
back to the foot of Tongariro where they thanked the tohunga.
As the sisters travelled down Te Waipounamu to Tamatea, embers dropped
off and caused thermal activity at Hanmer, which is how it got its name, Te
Whakatakaka O Te Ngarehu O Ahi Tamatea.
To solidify our learning around the kōrero tuku iho of Tamatea Pōkai Whenua
we read the pū rākau and created did artwork around the two fireball sisters,
Te Pūpū and Te Hōata.
Our final part was our Haerenga to Te Whakatakaka O Te Ngarehu O Ahi
Tamatea, Hanmer Springs. These haerenga help with making our learning more
meaningful as we are able to connect the stories to the whenua. We are
following in the footsteps of the local people.
A huge mihi to our whānau for attending our reo wānanga over the past 2
terms.
