The border bridgebetween Ťačovo and Romania, bombed by the Germans when they were retreating inSeptember 1944, was completely washed away in the 1970 floods, the worst flood everrecorded in the area. The bridge has never been repaired.PHOTO RETRIEVED FROM WIKIPEDIA.The Jews of Ťačovo and other nearbytowns, such as Chust, Berehove, Mukačevo andUžhorod, all in the southwest of Sub CarpathianRuthenia, prospered as an urban middle classduring the Czech period.Ťačovo was arguably the most beautiful andorganised small town of the region.In this landscape the children of the Kallos,Ruttner and Ickovic families, about whom youwill read in this book, enjoyed carefree childhoods.They lived close to each other amongnature, celebrated the Jewish holidays and hadlovely homes, thanks mainly to their parents’successful family businesses. Their shelteredlives in Ťačovo were shattered when theirwartime odyssey began with the Hungarianoccupation in March 1939, followed five yearslater by the German occupation, which began inMarch 1944. From then they were all deportedto Birkenau. Some family members survivedselection for slave labour and near-death experiences;others perished.Of her childhood in Ťačovo, Barbara Kallossays they lived in a Garden of Eden until theywere uprooted; afterwards, she says, life wasnever the same. Barbara also says that she stillmisses her father every day. There are two Kallosfamily photos in this book. In each you will seethat Barbara is always next to her father; herbrother Laci is always next to his mother. Shewas daddy’s girl, he was mummy’s boy.
