PART 1: THE KALLOS FAMILY • 7Zoltan and Lili-Regina KallosZoltan and Lili Kallos’ family was well knownin Ťačovo because they owned the impressiveKallos Hotel, located on the east side of Ťačovo.There were four hotels in Ťačovo: theKlein, nearest to the Ťačovo railway station onNádražní ulica (Czech for Railway Street), theKallos, which was the most modern, located a bitfurther away from the station, the Korona in thecity centre and the Pichler, which was more likea boarding house, in the south of Ťačovo nearthe Tisa River and the border with Romania.The Kallos Hotel, first built in 1928–29, containedsix guest rooms. In 1932 it was rebuiltwith sixteen guest rooms on the first floor, and abilliard room with a coin- operated billiard table,two dining areas and the kitchen on the groundfloor. The kitchen had two ovens, one a warmingoven that was also used to roast chestnuts inwinter. The Kallos family lived in a privateapartment, also located on the ground floor. Ithad three bedrooms as well as a sitting–diningarea and bathroom. Zoltan and Lili’s bedroomwas elegantly decorated with cherry wood furniture.Their eldest daughter Barbara shared herbedroom with her first cousin Barbara Tabak.The third bedroom was for the two youngestKallos children, Laci and Marta. The hotel hadrunning water, sewerage, electricity and centralheating making it very luxurious for its time.Two valued employees also lived in the hotel.They were treated so well by the Kallos familythey felt they were part of the family. Barbararemembers them with fondness.Maria Salamon, originally from Košice, Slovakia,was hotel manageress in charge of guestservices and housekeeping. Her room had a nightbell for late arrivals. Ilon, a Gypsy (today calledRoma), was the hotel cook; she also cleaned theKallos family’s private apartment.Located on the corner opposite the hotelwas a middle school for local Hungarians whoremained in Ťačovo after World War 1; it continuedto operate as a Hungarian school evenduring the Czech period (1918–39).The Kallos family atthe Kallos hotel beforethe war.
