Etuand Honi survived Birkenau and Lübberstedt–Bilohe with their Ruttner and Klein cousins andthe Kallos and Ickovic families.On the walls above all the memorial plaquesare four biblical quotes in Hebrew that describethe sorrow caused by the murder of innocentsand the certainty of G-d’s vengeance for theseatrocities.The second floor of Beit Máramaros containsa great hall where the annual memorial servicesare held.On the third floor are memorial rooms, officesand a library. The memorial rooms house acollection of souvenirs and pictures that depictMáramaros Jewry.Photos of the ghettos, deportation anddestruction hang on the staircase walls. Survivorsand their descendants in Israel and theDiaspora, as well as members of the generalpublic, can visit this memorial site to mourn,honour and remember. Alas, today, becausesubsequent generations are unaware of thismemorial, it has few visitors.The venue is now rented to the Breselve Chasidicgroup who use it as a yeshiva. Their Rebbe,Reb Nachman, who died over 100 years ago, isburied in Uman, Ukraine. Since Reb Nachman’sdeath the congregation has never had anotherRebbe.Breslev welcomes followers from a widerange of backgrounds, including those who havebeen in trouble with the law and drugs. Theyeshiva gives its students an opportunity to sitand learn Torah in the name of those who perishedand helps them keep out of trouble. Studytakes place in the synagogue and in study roomsupstairs. About forty-five boys study here, ofwhom about twenty-five live on the premisesin the upstairs rooms that are used as dormitories.The administrator, Doron Stern says thereare bigger plans for Beit Máramaros, includingsetting up a searchable online database ofthe names of those engraved on the memorialplaques. At the time of writing the building isundergoing substantial renovations, includingelectrical rewiring, and the installation of newlighting fixtures and flooring.After the construction and outfitting of BeitMáramaros was completed, a second projectcommenced: to put pen to paper to write thehistory of the martyred communities. The645 page Yizkor (Memorial) book entitled TheMáramaros Book: In memory of 160 Jewishcommunities was first published in Tel Aviv in1983 by the Beit Máramaros. The project tookten years to complete. A second edition waspublished in 1996.The Máramaros Yizkor BookThe Máramaros Yizkor Book is written in Hebrewand has an English preface. The Hebrew portionmeticulously documents 160 rural and urbancommunities, including Tetsch, that existed in theMáramaros region of the Carpathian Mountains.It tells the story of their foundation, prominentfigures and families who lived in the towns, andplaces an emphasis on the community’s religious,orthodox or Hasidic past, as well as mentioningnotable events. Where possible it provides exactstatistical figures and numerous historical blackand white photographs and maps.The section on Tetsch is eleven pages long(pages 303–13). It describes the Tetsch religiouscommunity at length and ends with briefexcerpts from the twenty-eight page diary keptby Elimelech Basch, a former Tetsch resident.The diary provides a detailed description ofthe Jewish community’s suffering during theHungarian and German occupation.
