their eye for perfection

Brian Lovelock have won many 

top garden awards, the couple 

get absolute pleasure from 

the visits to their garden by 

fellow Ngaio Marsh Retirement 

Village residents, and their 

friends and relatives. 

The Lovelocks, who have an 

eye towards perfection, love the 

smiles their springtime garden 

of pansies, tulips and lavender 

bushes bring to those that visit 

their corner section. 

Wheelchair-bound residents 

are some of those that beam 

with pleasure when they see 

the beauty before them in the 

couple’s garden. 

The latest Christchurch 

Beautifying Association award 

– the Clark/Everett Cup – that 

Janet and Brian have won, is a 

springtime class that covers flats 

and townhouses within rest/retirement/multiple 

housing complexes. 

The cup has been added 

to another summer award the 

couple won in February, when 

they took out the Eliot Sinclair 

& Partners trophy. 

Founded in 1897, the 

Christchurch Beautifying Association 

has helped define the 

garden city. 

“We’ve been competing in 

gardening competitions since 

after the 2011 Canterbury 

earthquake … we lost our 

Avondale home in the quakes,” 

Janet said.

Home for theatre sought

THREE MOTHERS are attempting 

to make Christchurch the best city 

to be in as a child. 

A permanent space for children 

to enjoy theatre experiences is 

what Edgeware’s Amy Straker, 

Burwood’s Melanie Luckman 

and Waltham’s Hannah Wheeler 

have been hoping for. 

The mothers behind Cubbin 

Theatre Company have hosted 

more than 90 performances to 

thousands of children under five 

across the city. 

They are now in the second 

stage of applying for a $280,000 

grant from the Ministry for 

Culture and Heritage for their 

project Ōtautahi Children’s Performing 

Arts Initiative. 

This round requires public 

feedback on the project, which 

will close on Sunday. 

A decision on the next stage 

will be made in late December. 

Then, the team will need to go 

through two more rounds before 

knowing whether it will receive 

the funding. 

If approved, the grant will go 

towards securing a lease, creating 

workshops for parents and artists, 

and providing high-quality 

performances. 

It all started four years ago 

after mother-of-two Luckman 

realised there were no artistic 

experiences offered for the underfive 

age group. 

Being a theatre director, 

she discussed the idea with 

experienced actors Straker and 

Wheeler. 

Said Luckman: “We have a really 

strong vision for wanting highquality 

works for under five.”

Almost 400 hours of volunteering 

leads to Gallantry Award

NEARLY 400 hours of 

community service and 

volunteering has resulted in 

one of Christchurch Boys’ High 

School’s highest awards at its 

recent senior student prizegiving. 

Michael Walker received the 

Jake Bailey Gallantry Award. The 

award was created by previous 

CBHS graduate, public speaker 

and author Jake Bailey for overcoming 

adversity. Michael was 

noted for his involvement in 

drama and for having the most 

time spent in community service 

and volunteering, with 399 hours. 

He is reportedly going to Ara to 

become a chef. 

Other key award winners include 

the 2022 Dux, Liam Bately. 

Liam also received the Deans 

Scholar, which is awarded to 

the student “who in the highest 

degree exhibits the qualities of intellect, 

athletic ability, leadership 

and character”. Bately is going 

on to study engineering. The dux 

runner-up, Proxime Accessit, was 

awarded to Jackson Fontaine. 

The Old Boys’ Medal and 

George Sanders Award for Service 

was awarded to Asher Pettengell- 

Brand, and the Old Boys’ Centennial 

Trophy was awarded to Tom 

Gibson.

Headmaster Nic Hill said the 

highlights of the event included 

“thanking the students for their 

positive contribution, especially 

during the last three years of 

Covid-19 disruption” as well as 

recognising the efforts of staff.

Lifting spirits with blooms and colour

The couple connected over 

their love of gardening. Brian 

and Janet have been regular 

competitors over the past 10 

years, and before the move to 

Ngaio Marsh they won a total of 

51 trophies for their Northwood 

garden, including three premier 

trophies from the Christchurch 

Beautifying Association and 

the Canterbury Horticultural 

Society. 

Brian says the couple form a 

communicative gardening team 

that plans well. 

They have tended gardens 

in Taren Point (Sydney), 

Avondale and Northwood. “We 

brought with us a total of 440 

tuberous begonias of which 220 

were potted and mostly named, 

and some perfumed varieties, 

along with 220 ‘non-stop’ 

varieties for the summer garden 

beds,” Janet says of the move to 

Ngaio Marsh about a year and a 

half ago. 

How the couple ended up in 

Ngaio Marsh, in Papanui, is a 

story in itself. They are both from 

the Berkshire town of Newbury, 

about 80km west of London, and 

first met while youngsters at a 

youth club. 

From the age of seven Brian 

remembers having to tend to the 

garden, part of the family council 

home, to help ends meet given 

his father was killed in Italy in 

World War 2. Janet lived on a 

small family farm giving her a 

close association with nature and 

its bounty. 

In spite of the youth club fun, 

and an engagement, the chance 

for romance eventually dwindled 

as the couple went their different 

ways with other partners. 

In the 1960s Brian emigrated 

to Sydney where he had an uncle 

– and Janet to Christchurch. 

Following a 34-year period of no 

contact – they reconnected. 

In Sydney, Brian had forged 

a career in town planning and 

horticulture and landscape 

design, particularly in Sutherland 

Shire. The knowledge of plants 

and gardens has served him well 

ever since, including a spell of 

employing 18 staff at his own 

garden centre business. 

During the time of owning the 

garden centre, ‘mother nature’ 

played a part in the move to 

Christchurch. A flood caused the 

business to close for three weeks, 

followed by a drought for several 

years which forced the decision 

not to renew the lease on the 

premises. 

When the couple met again 

in the late 1990s, following a 

series of international phone calls 

and flights, romance blossomed 

again. Eventually they married in 

Gretna Green, Scotland, in May 

2000. 

In Ngaio Marsh village they 

have worked in with a neighbour, 

gaining access to her garage 

to ensure that the hundreds of 

begonia tubers have space as they 

begin sprouting and need more 

light. 

“The spring and summer 

blooms, designed with the 

wider community in mind, 

are always welcomed. People 

like colour. The people who 

live here are probably past 

gardeners in their time, and 

when they go for a stroll around 

here now they want to see 

colour,” Brian said. 

“They tell us when they get to 

this corner (of our house) it lifts 

their spirits. That’s worth a lot,” 

Janet said. 

They also run popular garden 

clubs to give gardening tips 

to fellow residents at Ngaio 

Marsh and also in their old 

neighbourhood of Styx Mill.

New scholarship aims to encourage more 

women into the sustainability sector 

A NEW scholarship, offered 

through Ara Institute of 

Canterbury – Te Pukenga and 

Fife Foundation, is expected 

to provide a huge incentive for 

young women to take on study 

in the sustainability and outdoor 

education sphere. 

The scholarship, available 

for the first time for study at 

Ara in 2023, will cover full fees 

($25,000) for a woman enrolling 

in the Bachelor of Sustainability 

and Outdoor Education. 

Te Ako me Te Tiaki i Te Taiao 

sustainability and outdoor 

education manager, Dave Irwin 

said it’s the most significant 

scholarship Ara offers, and 

demonstrates future thinking in 

action. 

“I am thrilled that this 

scholarship is targeted at women. 

While sustainability is everyone’s 

business, women have unequally 

borne the brunt of unsustainable 

practices globally – be it 

through scarcity of food, rising 

costs, inequity, or social justice 

prejudice,” he said. 

Founded by Gina Satterthwaite 

and taking its name from her 

grandmother, Fife Foundation 

is a not-for-profit entity that 

aims to help people live happier, 

healthy lives while benefiting our 

planet. 

Irwin said having the

Gina Satterthwaite agreed. 

“We seek to be collaborative 

as it’s so much more powerful 

than working alone. It gives us 

the chance to have a longer reach 

and make a greater impact.” 

Satterthwaite said the 

scholarship is a tangible way to 

act locally with hopes for global 

outcomes – specifically working 

to address the imbalance that 

exists for women at governance 

and board levels. 

“My hopes for this scholarship 

are that it breaks barriers for 

a passionate young woman 

wanting to study, grow and 

contribute at a high level in the 

sustainability sphere,” she said. 

Satterthwaite has a personal 

connection to the course with 

daughter Georgia, who is also 

involved with Fife Foundation, 

nearing completion of Ara 

– Te Pūkenga’s Bachelor of 

Sustainability and Outdoor 

Education. The course provided 

a natural tertiary study fit for 

Georgia, who grew up rurally 

and has a drive to protect the 

environments she loves. 

“Together we share a 

passion for the environment, 

land and oceans, and a huge 

sense of responsibility to care 

for the spaces we all enjoy,” 

Satterthwaite said. 

Irwin said the study of 

sustainability has struggled 

to gain traction in the tertiary 

sector, but the new scholarship 

shows Ara is ready to lead a shift 

in thinking, incentive, and focus. 

“When we think about the 

fast rate of change the world is 

facing – be it in terms of climate, 

biodiversity or the gap between 

rich and poor – it needs big, 

concerted efforts to halt that 

trajectory. This relationship is 

one. Fife Foundation is ready to 

act and as an organisation we too

GALLOWAY SEES her new book 

The Homemade Table as more 

than just a book about preparing 

home-cooked food, but one that 

encompasses a way of living and 

thinking about food. 

To this end, she has separated 

the book into two parts – one 

with seasonal recipes based on 

daily meals while the other is 

a deep dive into her favourite 

sourdough, fermenting, 

cheesemaking and preserving 

recipes. 

Her advice to people just 

starting the home-made journey 

is to keep it simple, focus on one 

or two recipes at a time so they 

become second nature and part of 

the kitchen rhythm before trying 

another one. 

“If you try to do everything 

all at once, you may be setting 

yourself up for overwhelm and 

potential failure.” 

There is also plenty of advice 

for troubleshooting if something 

goes wrong with the recipes. 

And she has provided 

information for substitutions, 

where possible, for gluten, wheat 

and dairy. 

Spring greens & feta filo 

pie (or parcels) 

A simple spanakopita-inspired 

pie (or filo parcels) to use all 

those sprightly spring and 

early summer greens, with a 

heavy dose of fresh herbs and 

complemented with salty feta. 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

4 Tbsp olive oil 

1 leek (about 250g), washed and 

finely sliced 

500g leafy greens – silverbeet, 

beetroot greens, spinach 

Pinch of salt 

Handful of chopped fresh herbs 

- oregano, thyme, rosemary, 

parsley, dill 

200g feta, crumbled 

1 free-range egg, beaten 

Twist of cracked pepper 

60g butter 

12 sheets filo pastry 

Directions 

Preheat the oven to 190 deg C 

(fan 170 deg C). 

Heat a large frying pan over a 

moderate heat. Add 1 Tbsp olive 

oil and the leek and saute for 5 

minutes to soften. 

Wash and roughly chop the 

greens, stalks included. Add to 

the pan with the salt. Cover, and 

cook for 5-6 minutes until the 

greens have wilted – the water 

remaining on the leaves from 

washing will be enough to steam 

the greens. 

Remove the lid and continue 

cooking, stirring constantly, until 

any excess cooking liquid has 

evaporated (turn up the heat if 

needed). Tip on to a plate to cool

In a bowl combine the chopped 

herbs, feta, egg and cracked pepper. 

Fold through the warm greens 

mixture. 

In a small saucepan, melt together 

the butter and remaining 

3 Tbsp oil. 

Use a pastry brush to grease a 

shallow roasting dish with the 

butter mixture. Unroll the filo 

pastry and arrange 2 sheets in the 

dish, brush with the butter mixture, 

then repeat this layer twice 

more with 6 sheets of filo used. 

Spread the greens mixture 

evenly over the filo, leaving a 4cm 

border. 

Arrange another 2 sheets of filo 

on top, brushing with the melted 

butter mixture, and repeat this 

filo layer twice more. A total of 12 

sheets of filo have now been used. 

Fold over the edges to encase 

the mixture and drizzle any 

remaining butter mixture over 

the pie. 

Bake for 30-35 minutes until 

the pastry is golden. Cut into 

wedges and serve hot or cold. 

The filling above can be used to 

make filo parcels as follows: 

Lay 2 sheets of filo on the 

bench, with a short side closest to 

you. Brush generously with the 

butter mixture. Spoon a heaped 

tablespoon of the greens mixture 

on to the bottom left corner of 

the pastry. Fold over the long 

edge in half from right to left to 

cover the mixture. 

Brush the pastry again with 

butter. Fold the bottom left corner 

over at an angle to meet the 

folded edge, making a triangle 

shape. Continue to fold left to 

right in this triangle shape until 

the pastry is all used up. Place on 

to a baking tray, brush again, and 

scatter with sesame seeds. 

Repeat with the remaining filo 

sheets and filling. Bake for 20-25 

minutes until golden. 

Note: This recipe uses about half 

a packet of filo pastry. Unused 

filo pastry can be returned to the 

packet, well-sealed and stored 

in the fridge for up to a week, or 

frozen for a month. –ODT

So, what’s wanted and what’s not? Depending 

on your age, means and history of purchasing, 

this might be totally different. Although there 

is no scientific consensus on the definition 

of emotions, invariably their presence is 

felt constantly when a property purchase 

is made. I’ve been party to the full gamut of 

emotions associated with property purchase, 

from elated highs and lows on auction day, 

to tantrums at missing out in a negotiation 

situation and tears of joy at securing that 

house of which dreams are made. As a sales 

consultant, you will meet up with young 

parents looking to capture school zones for 

the future whilst they’re hopefully enjoying 

great space in the present and older parents 

stepping up to provide financial assistance for 

grown children who need additional support. 

Needless to say, the emotions governing 

both these decisions are different; one being 

anticipation and excitement, the other 

being a little less excited and definitely more 

measured. 

How about emotional factors that precede 

locational purchases, like being near the 

water, having a view of the city or mountains, 

or ownership in prestigious areas. Some 

emotions pull so strongly and are so 

recognizable that there are articles written 

on how to counter them. These are an easy

book and despite being told by people who 

have known me for a long time not to be, I still
