Thursday November 10 2022 5 Almost 400 hours of volunteering leads to Gallantry Award • By Dylan Walker NEARLY 400 hours of community service and volunteering has resulted in one of Christchurch Boys’ High School’s highest awards at its recent senior student prizegiving. Michael Walker received the Jake Bailey Gallantry Award. The award was created by previous CBHS graduate, public speaker and author Jake Bailey for overcoming adversity. Michael was noted for his involvement in drama and for having the most time spent in community service and volunteering, with 399 hours. He is reportedly going to Ara to become a chef. Other key award winners include the 2022 Dux, Liam Bately. Liam also received the Deans Scholar, which is awarded to the student “who in the highest degree exhibits the qualities of intellect, athletic ability, leadership and character”. Bately is going on to study engineering. The dux runner-up, Proxime Accessit, was awarded to Jackson Fontaine. The Old Boys’ Medal and George Sanders Award for Service was awarded to Asher Pettengell- Brand, and the Old Boys’ Centennial Trophy was awarded to Tom Gibson. The 2022 Dux was awarded to Charlotte Cotton, with runner up, Proxime Accessit, Molly Newman. The Ka Hāro te Manu award for top Māori academic student went to Kate Koller. The name of the award translates to “the bird soars”. Sarah Smith received the Matai Prize for top Pasifika academic student, and the Mana Wahine Mana Matauraka award for senior Māori leadership went to Meretitia Roffey. CGHS Dux Charlotte Cotton.
