Santa’s toy-makers in
need of a new home
• By Natalie Pham
VOLUNTEER elves have given
thousands of wooden toys to
many deserving children across
Canterbury for 50 years.
But this year the volunteers
at the Santa Claus Workshop
Charitable Trust are hoping
their wish for a permanent
home will come true.
The hunt for a new premises
began in December last year
after the technology block at
Shirley Intermediate School was
demolished. It was home to the
workshop for almost 10 years.
Since then, many volunteers
have been working from home
to get about 1100 handmade
toys ready for the festive season.
From cars to wheelbarrows
and wooden chairs to cots for
dolls, they craft a wide range
of toys using high-quality
timber. While some only take
a few hours to complete, more
intricate toys can take up to 20
hours.
Trust chairman Stewart Williams
said the workshop’s elves
might not be able to produce
the toys next year if they cannot
find a new home. In the worst
case, the trust could be forced to
take a break from toymaking.
“We really don’t have much
option. We’re still actively looking
with the council, but we
haven’t had much luck to date,”
Williams said.
“It’s not practical going forward
from our perspectives . . .
various toys are made by more
than one person, so it’s not just
the matter of cutting it out with
a jigsaw or something like that.”
The search for a new site has
been difficult – but Williams
said the trust is not alone.
“I know most volunteer
groups are also struggling with
the same issue.”
In August last year, the workshop
was offered a vacant site
at 280 Westminster St by the
city council. However, the site
was vandalised beyond repair a
week before the equipment and
tools were moved in.
Said Williams: “They trashed
the place, smashed all windows,
and tore out all the wiring.
Basically made the building
uninhabitable.
“It restricted us from being
able to support people that need
help in our society. We just want
to be able to make toys to make
kids happy.”
City council head of city
growth and property Bruce
Rendall said it has tried to help
the trust find a new home.
“Unfortunately, the council
has few vacant buildings and
those it does have are generally
being held for broader site
redevelopment, such as park
enhancements.”
New safety platforms among
raft of proposed improvements
• By Natalie Pham
PROPOSED changes for a busy
intersection in Shirley are a
step closer after a heated debate
among community board
members.
The Waitai Coastal-Burwood-
Linwood Community Board had
to undergo additional discussion
before giving the green light to
the safety improvement proposal
for the Briggs/Marshland/Lake
Terrace Rds intersection.
It came after a number of
board members expressed
concern about raised safety platforms
on all approaches to the
intersection, which was among
the proposed changes.
Raised platforms are a traffic
calming measure to reduce the
speed of vehicles entering an
intersection to 30km/h.
They were first installed
in Christchurch at the busy
intersection of Lincoln Rd, Barrington
Rd and Whiteleigh Ave,
but the city council is proposing
to use raised platforms at other
high-risk intersections.
City council senior transportation
engineer Gemma Dioni said
they would be a key tool in the
Road to Zero strategy.
“From a system perspective, we
are trying to reduce the number
of death and serious injury
crashes on our network,” Dioni
said.
Other proposed changes
include a new traffic island, kerb
extensions and a new cycle lane
on Lake Terrace Rd.
With five out of nine board
members giving the proposal the
thumbs up, it is now awaiting
the approval of the Waipapa
Papanui-Innes-Central Community
Board, as Briggs Rd is part
of the Innes Ward.
If both boards approve it,
construction is expected to start
in May next year.
At the meeting on Monday,
Linwood Ward city councillor
Yani Johanson voted against the
proposal and questioned potential
damage to vehicles from the
raised platforms.
“Because the one at Lincoln
[Addington] is pretty bad. People
don’t expect them,” he said.
There have been complaints
from drivers on social media
after the bottom of their vehicles
were scraped by the new safety
platforms at the Lincoln Rd
intersection.
Burwood Ward city councillor
Kelly Barber was also not
in favour of the raised safety
platforms
“Road to Zero is an admirable
goal. It’s very easy to achieve if
we drive everywhere at 20km/h.
But I don’t think in our society, it
is practical.
“I think these are the sort of
intersection changes that give
council a bad name.”
However, deputy chairperson
Jackie Simons said the raised
platforms are not going to damage
vehicles if drivers slow down.
“I actually go through the Lincoln
Rd intersection every week.
This is about drivers’ education.
“They’ve been used all over the
country. It’s new to Christchurch,
it’s new to us. But they are
a good system that does slow the
traffic down.”
There have been four serious
injury crashes in the last 10 years
at the Shirley intersection.
City council staff has identified
red light running, right turning
traffic failing to give way, and
right-angle crashes being the
most significant crash problems.
There is also a high collective
and medium high personal risk at
this intersection as it has a death
and serious injury score of 1.86.
Collective risk refers to the
number of fatal and serious
crashes per kilometre or within a
set distance of an intersection.
While personal risk refers to
the likelihood of an individual
being involved in a fatal or
serious crashes per million
vehicle kilometre travelled.
The Cecilian Singers mark 40 years
ALTHOUGH NOW in their
42nd year, The Cecilian Singers
are celebrating the 40th
anniversary of the choir, with a
special concert at The Piano on
November 26.
An equal voice choir for
women, The Cecilian Singers
was founded in 1981 by Nan Anderson.
It is an auditioned choir
with a varied repertoire, ranging
from medieval to modern, both
sacred and secular.
The choir quickly established
a national reputation with
broadcasts on Radio New
Zealand and Praise Be.
It has also recorded two CDs
that went to No. 1 on Concert
NZ Classical Hits. Works by
New Zealand composers, some
especially commissioned, are
frequently performed and the
choir has twice travelled to
Australia to showcase New
Zealand music.
There has always been an
emphasis on supporting local
musicians and encouraging
outstanding talent. Featured
artists have included Teddy
Tahu Rhodes, Ann Lamont
Lowe, Louisa Pilkington,
Helen Charlton, and many
Over the past 40 years, the
Cecilians have performed at
least 100 times at concerts, plus
events like weddings and music
festivals. Events range from
poetry and music at the Old
Municipal Chambers, to singing
in Hebrew with the Washington
Women’s Choir at the Great Hall.
They have performed at many
iconic Christchurch venues that
were casualties of the February
22, 2011 earthquake – the
Provincial Council Chambers, St
JOYOUS: The Celician Singers choir has been performing for more than
four decades.
Luke’s Church, the Music Centre
Chapel and The Chapel of St
John of God in Halswell.
The choir has been fortunate
to have worked under the baton
of only four music directors in
its history. Nan Anderson, who
received the QSM in 2020 for
services to choral music, was the
director for 27 years. Anderson
was followed by Jean Cumming,
JIG
Rosemary Allison
SAWS
and the
current director, renowned
contralto Rosemary Turnbull.
As has been the case for so
many organisations, the choir’s
original plans for celebrating
the milestone were disrupted
by Covid-19, resulting in
three cancellations of planned
concerts.
The celebration on Saturday
will be the culmination of two
years of planning, rehearsing,
and waiting.
It will offer traditional and
modern classical compositions
(Brahms, Britten and Orban)
and a piece by NZ composer
David Hamilton. The choir will
be accompanied by pianist Sarah
Kang, harpist Helen Webby
and Emma Eden and Bernard
Shapiro on horns.
for the whole family
For many working families here in
Canterbury, childcare is one of their
biggest household costs. That’s why,
as part of our Government’s work
to support New Zealanders with
the cost of living, we are making
childcare more affordable for low
and middle income families.
We recently announced that we’re
significantly expanding childcare
assistance, cutting costs for working
parents and supporting more
children into early education.
On top of this, we are further
boosting Working for Families and
the Best Start payment, providing
more support.
These changes will kick in from
1 April next year. The exact amount
families will save on childcare costs
will depend on the number of hours
they work, the wages they are on, the
number of hours of childcare per day,
and the cost of their early childcare
education centre.
For example, a Canterbury family
with two parents both working
40 hours per week on $26 per hour
with two children under five would
not have been eligible for childcare
assistance, but now will be eligible
for $252 per week.
Childcare assistance has been
neglected for more than a decade
since income thresholds were frozen
by National in 2010. I’m really proud
that the changes we are making will
see thousands of parents given the
choice to do what’s best for their
family.
These next steps will build on the
work that we have already done to
ease cost of living pressures on
New Zealanders.
As always, I’m here to help. Please
get in touch on 0800 727 244 or
pop into my office if you need any
assistance.
BRAINTREE, the first wellness centre of
its kind in New Zealand to support people
with neurological conditions, is holding
an open day in Papanui on Saturday.
The centre at 70 Langdons Rd will be
open to the public from 10am to noon.
“We have had such positive feedback
from everyone attending either an activity
or support session since we opened in
June this year, we want to give the public
the chance to see just how special this
facility is and why it is earning such high
praise,” BrainTree general manager Phil
Marshall-Lee said.
“We hope people will pop in, have a
look around and enjoy a coffee.”
BrainTree is the new home for
Dementia Canterbury, Multiple Sclerosis
and Parkinson’s Canterbury, the Southern
Stroke Foundation, Southern Music
Therapy, Aspire Canterbury and Adult
Conductive Education Trust.
“The centre is already making life so
much better for the many people living in
the community with neurological conditions,”
Marshall-Lee said.
Conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis,
Parkinson’s and dementia are progressive,
and while some people become severely
disabled, most can live with relatively
moderate symptoms for longer periods
of time. The wellness centre is a key
component to ensuring those affected can
still live a full life after a diagnosis of a
neurological condition.
Marshall-Lee said the centre is
equipped with a gym, studio, cafe and
meeting spaces for individual or group
use, as well as being a place to share and
OPEN: The BrainTree centre on
Langdons Rd, next to Papanui
Bush, includes a gym and a café.
learn from real-life experiences, take part
in activity support groups and access
specialist well-being services. It can also
host conferences for up to 80 people, with
all inquiries welcome.
The $8 million complex is the
culmination of a huge community
effort since Dementia Canterbury, and
Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s
Canterbury joined forces in 2017 in the
Canterbury Brain Collective, a registered
charity, to build a home for the two
societies. The cost has been almost
entirely funded by private individuals,
businesses and community trusts in
Christchurch.
The donors, many of whom have
known someone personally affected,
have opened their hearts and contributed
generously, all sharing the vision of
creating BrainTree, Marshall-Lee said.
“The team at BrainTree wishes to thank
everyone for their support.”
Dux of the School
Janvi Puri
The PETER BRYANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to the Dux of
the school. This is an annual award, established by the Board of Trustees,
to acknowledge the outstanding contribution to Burnside High School of
the late Dr Peter Bryant in his role as the chairperson of the Board.
This year’s Dux recipient, Janvi Puri, attended Russley School and Burnside
Primary School, where she displayed a wide range of skill, ability and
intelligence across a wide range of areas.
Early on at Burnside High School Janvi
was identified as someone who achieved
amazing results across the board with
teachers describing her as a dedicated
and conscientious student and someone
who was “bright and friendly”.
At Burnside, she was placed in a
Performance Music Class and continued
as a guitarist in the Junior Guitar
Ensemble. Janvi is also an accomplished
badminton player. She has represented
Burnside High School every year and is
currently the captain of the Girls Premiere
A Team competing at the South Island
Secondary Schools Championships for
the past two years.
Janvi has an Excellence Endorsement in
Janvi Puri
every subject she has entered in NCEA
amassing 274 Excellence credits. She has
been the recipient of the General Excellence Award for North Division for
the past three years with numerous first placings in subjects. Her academic
record this year is superior and the 41 NCEA credits she has earned so far
are exclusively at Excellence level and she is entered for no less than seven
Scholarship exams on top of her other SIX subjects.
At our awards evening she placed First Place in Biology, English,
Mathematics with Calculus and Spanish and an Excellence Awards for
Physics and Chemistry.
Currently Janvi has accepted a place at Otago University with a $30,000
scholarship but is still entertaining options such as Auckland University
where she has been offered a $20,000 Scholarship or possibly a University
in New South Wales. Wherever she lands she will be studying medicine
and we and we are positive that in all of her endeavours, it WILL BE with
great. Congratulations!
After significant debate among the Music staff,
it was decided to award the cup top two joint
winners.
The winners of the Smokefree Cup for
Leadership in Music and the Peter Rowe Cup in
2022 are Sho Woodhouse and Dylan Blundell.
Dylan and Sho have contributed to a wide
range of ensembles having won multiple awards
throughout their time at Burnside. They have
both been in SMP Jazz for five years, and
between them they contribute to multiple
ensembles and groups. Together have won
many awards for Big Band, and Chamber Music.
Separately they have achieved recognition in
Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Combo
and Funk Band.
While one won the best combo drummer at
JazzQuest, the other was awarded Best Drum
Solo at JazzBandit. Congratulations!
Leaders in Learning
Proxime Accessit
Our Proxime Accessit for 2022 is Carol Khor. Carol is an exceptional
student who has been described as someone who always meets and
regularly exceeds work quality expectations.
Beginning Burnside High School as a Year 10 student she immediately
signed up as a librarian and involved herself in Archery, Badminton and
Surfing. Her academic talent at this point was evident as she took first
place in Science, English, Mathematics, Digital Technologies and Business,
Economics and Accounting as well as
the General Excellence Award for South
Division over the next three years!
Her academic prowess is supreme and is
characterised by a real sense of purpose in
everything that she does. She is also the
kind of person whose actions are for the
benefit of others with her being further
described by teachers as loyal, genuine,
empathetic and fair.
This year she has represented Burnside
High Schools’ Premiere Badminton Team
and she has been a driving force amongst
the Academic Leadership Group. On top
of this and an incredibly busy program of
study, she has spent time on a research
program with the University of Otago
at Christchurch Hospital investigating
advancements in cancer treatment. Her
work in this area earned her the Prime
Music Awards 2022 Sports Champions 2022
Dylan Blundell & Sho Woodhouse
Carol Khor
Taylah Holdem & Rosa Vesty
Carol Khor
Minister’s Te Puiaki Kaipūtaiao Ānamata Future Scientist Prize valued at
$50,000. Her work also won her acclaim during the recent holidays where
she was invited to present her findings along with other undergraduate
students winning a Royal College of Australasia Pathology Award.
To date she has the opportunity to continue her education at the
University of Canterbury, or Auckland, or Otago and has received sizeable
scholarship offers from all, however she is not ruling out a place at
Cambridge University. Carol has, in 2022, navigated a formidable workload
and still come out the other side as close to the top as you can get. At
prize giving she has received awards for FIRST PLACE in Physics and
FIRST PLACE in Design and Visual Communication and Excellence in
Biology, English and Chemistry. We wish her well as she embarks on an
exam program which includes an additional eight Scholarship subjects on
top of her other subjects and looks to build on the total of 240 Excellence
credits she already has.
Taylah and Rosa are members of the Senior Girls ‘A’
Volleyball team, who won the Mainland Champs (also
known as the South Islands) early in March this year, before
Covid caused the Canterbury and NZ Secondary Schools’
Championships to be cancelled or postponed. They were
also about to represent Burnside High School in the
Canterbury and NZ Beach Volleyball Championships, when
these events were cancelled in February. They both were
selected for the NZ Junior Womens’ Volleyball team, who
beat Australia Junior Women in a 5-match test series last
term, and for Beach Volleyball, they represented Canterbury
and NZ this year, attending the World Beach Volleyball
Championships in Europe. They are currently coaching
junior girls’ volleyball teams for Burnside High this term. L to R: Rose Vesty, Taylah Holdem
Over Labour weekend, the Senior Girls ‘A’ Volleyball team won the re-scheduled Canterbury
Secondary Schools’ Girls Championships. For 2023, Taylah has been awarded a Volleyball scholarship
to Michigan State University, USA, and Rosa has been awarded a Beach Volleyball scholarship to
Florida State University, USA. Taylah and Rosa, representing Beach Volleyball, received a “Highly
Commended” award at the Zonta Secondary Schools’ Sports Awards ceremony, in the category of
“Most Outstanding Female Team” for 2022.
Thomas Vesty
Thomas’ three sports this year are Cricket, Volleyball and Beach Volleyball.
He played in the Gillette Cup preliminary series with the Cricket 1st XI in
the first term. For Beach Volleyball, the Canterbury and NZ Secondary
Schools tournaments were cancelled. However, the Canterbury rep season
featured Thomas being selected in the Canterbury U17 Boys Beach team,
pairing with Flynn Holdem. This pair went on to win the NZ U17 title.
For Volleyball, Tom is a member of the Senior Boys ‘A’ team, who also
couldn’t play Canterbury or NZ Secondary Schools’ tournaments this year.
However, he made the Canterbury U17 Boys Volleyball team, who won the
NZ U17 tournament. Thomas was the MVP of this tournament.
The re-scheduled Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Championships were
played over Labour Weekend, and the Senior Boys ‘A’ team beat Shirley
BHS in the final, to win this event for the first time ever.
