Thursday November 24 2022 9 Dux of the School Janvi Puri The PETER BRYANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to the Dux of the school. This is an annual award, established by the Board of Trustees, to acknowledge the outstanding contribution to Burnside High School of the late Dr Peter Bryant in his role as the chairperson of the Board. This year’s Dux recipient, Janvi Puri, attended Russley School and Burnside Primary School, where she displayed a wide range of skill, ability and intelligence across a wide range of areas. Early on at Burnside High School Janvi was identified as someone who achieved amazing results across the board with teachers describing her as a dedicated and conscientious student and someone who was “bright and friendly”. At Burnside, she was placed in a Performance Music Class and continued as a guitarist in the Junior Guitar Ensemble. Janvi is also an accomplished badminton player. She has represented Burnside High School every year and is currently the captain of the Girls Premiere A Team competing at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships for the past two years. Janvi has an Excellence Endorsement in Janvi Puri every subject she has entered in NCEA amassing 274 Excellence credits. She has been the recipient of the General Excellence Award for North Division for the past three years with numerous first placings in subjects. Her academic record this year is superior and the 41 NCEA credits she has earned so far are exclusively at Excellence level and she is entered for no less than seven Scholarship exams on top of her other SIX subjects. At our awards evening she placed First Place in Biology, English, Mathematics with Calculus and Spanish and an Excellence Awards for Physics and Chemistry. Currently Janvi has accepted a place at Otago University with a $30,000 scholarship but is still entertaining options such as Auckland University where she has been offered a $20,000 Scholarship or possibly a University in New South Wales. Wherever she lands she will be studying medicine and we and we are positive that in all of her endeavours, it WILL BE with great. Congratulations! After significant debate among the Music staff, it was decided to award the cup top two joint winners. The winners of the Smokefree Cup for Leadership in Music and the Peter Rowe Cup in 2022 are Sho Woodhouse and Dylan Blundell. Dylan and Sho have contributed to a wide range of ensembles having won multiple awards throughout their time at Burnside. They have both been in SMP Jazz for five years, and between them they contribute to multiple ensembles and groups. Together have won many awards for Big Band, and Chamber Music. Separately they have achieved recognition in Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Combo and Funk Band. While one won the best combo drummer at JazzQuest, the other was awarded Best Drum Solo at JazzBandit. Congratulations! Leaders in Learning Proxime Accessit Our Proxime Accessit for 2022 is Carol Khor. Carol is an exceptional student who has been described as someone who always meets and regularly exceeds work quality expectations. Beginning Burnside High School as a Year 10 student she immediately signed up as a librarian and involved herself in Archery, Badminton and Surfing. Her academic talent at this point was evident as she took first place in Science, English, Mathematics, Digital Technologies and Business, Economics and Accounting as well as the General Excellence Award for South Division over the next three years! Her academic prowess is supreme and is characterised by a real sense of purpose in everything that she does. She is also the kind of person whose actions are for the benefit of others with her being further described by teachers as loyal, genuine, empathetic and fair. This year she has represented Burnside High Schools’ Premiere Badminton Team and she has been a driving force amongst the Academic Leadership Group. On top of this and an incredibly busy program of study, she has spent time on a research program with the University of Otago at Christchurch Hospital investigating advancements in cancer treatment. Her work in this area earned her the Prime Music Awards 2022 Sports Champions 2022 Dylan Blundell & Sho Woodhouse Carol Khor Taylah Holdem & Rosa Vesty Carol Khor Minister’s Te Puiaki Kaipūtaiao Ānamata Future Scientist Prize valued at $50,000. Her work also won her acclaim during the recent holidays where she was invited to present her findings along with other undergraduate students winning a Royal College of Australasia Pathology Award. To date she has the opportunity to continue her education at the University of Canterbury, or Auckland, or Otago and has received sizeable scholarship offers from all, however she is not ruling out a place at Cambridge University. Carol has, in 2022, navigated a formidable workload and still come out the other side as close to the top as you can get. At prize giving she has received awards for FIRST PLACE in Physics and FIRST PLACE in Design and Visual Communication and Excellence in Biology, English and Chemistry. We wish her well as she embarks on an exam program which includes an additional eight Scholarship subjects on top of her other subjects and looks to build on the total of 240 Excellence credits she already has. Taylah and Rosa are members of the Senior Girls ‘A’ Volleyball team, who won the Mainland Champs (also known as the South Islands) early in March this year, before Covid caused the Canterbury and NZ Secondary Schools’ Championships to be cancelled or postponed. They were also about to represent Burnside High School in the Canterbury and NZ Beach Volleyball Championships, when these events were cancelled in February. They both were selected for the NZ Junior Womens’ Volleyball team, who beat Australia Junior Women in a 5-match test series last term, and for Beach Volleyball, they represented Canterbury and NZ this year, attending the World Beach Volleyball Championships in Europe. They are currently coaching junior girls’ volleyball teams for Burnside High this term. For 2023, Taylah has been awarded a Volleyball scholarship to Michigan State University, USA, and Rosa has been awarded a Beach Volleyball scholarship to Florida State University, USA. Taylah and Rosa, representing Beach Volleyball, received a “Highly Commended” award at the Zonta Secondary Schools’ Sports Awards ceremony, in the category of “Most Outstanding Female Team” for 2022. Thomas Vesty Thomas’ three sports this year are Cricket, Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. He played in the Gillette Cup preliminary series with the Cricket 1st XI in the first term. For Beach Volleyball, the Canterbury and NZ Secondary Schools tournaments were cancelled. However, the Canterbury rep season featured Thomas being selected in the Canterbury U17 Boys Beach team, pairing with Flynn Holdem. This pair went on to win the NZ U17 title. For Volleyball, Tom is a member of the Senior Boys ‘A’ team, who also couldn’t play Canterbury or NZ Secondary Schools’ tournaments this year. However, he made the Canterbury U17 Boys Volleyball team, who won the NZ U17 tournament. Thomas was the MVP of this tournament. The re-scheduled Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Championships were played over Labour Weekend, and the Senior Boys ‘A’ team beat Shirley BHS in the final, to win this event for the first time ever.
