Arange of regional<br />
meetings and topics<br />
As Mayorofthe HurunuiDistrict Iattend,<br />
on your behalf, arangeofregional<br />
meetings.<br />
The zone meeting for all Metro, Regional,<br />
Provincial and Ruralcouncils across the<br />
SouthIsland was hosted last week by<br />
TasmanDistrict CouncilinRichmond.<br />
While in Richmond we had the<br />
opportunity tohave asite visit to the<br />
Waimea Dam.<br />
This is asignificant pieceof<br />
infrastructure that is designedtorecharge<br />
the aquifer and futureproof water security<br />
for the district.<br />
Keynotespeakers includedthe Associate<br />
Minister forLocal Government Kieran<br />
McAnulty, Brad OlsenPrincipal Economist<br />
who suggested that the demandonenergy<br />
prices will remain high with food costs<br />
reaching double digit pricing.<br />
Dr Tom Robinson from the University of<br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong> spokeofthe AF8. This award<br />
winningprogramme is designedtobuild<br />
resilience for the next large AlpineFault<br />
earthquakewhich includesscientific<br />
research and modelling, acoordinated<br />
responsefor planning and community<br />
engagement.<br />
Dr Tom’s messagetoall was: ‘‘We can’t<br />
predict earthquake’s but we can prepare<br />
for them’’.<br />
On Tuesday Iflew to Wellington to attend<br />
the Rural and Provincialsectormeeting,<br />
with elected members from across New<br />
Zealand.<br />
This is awonderfulopportunity to<br />
network and connect with Mayors and<br />
councillors.<br />

discussion followed the recent release of<br />
the ‘‘thinktank’’ paper which states‘‘that<br />
significant change is required to many<br />
aspects of the local government system to<br />

The Minister Hon AndrewLittle,<br />
MinisterofHealth spoke to the forum in<br />
regard to Te Whatu Ora NZ Health reform.<br />
Itook the opportunitytoquestion him on<br />
the position of government to addressthe<br />
historically underfunded support for allied<br />
health, as in my opinion the system is<br />
failing the strategy and desire to keep<br />
people safe and well in their homesfor<br />
longer.<br />
His response was unabletoconvinceme<br />
that he had aclear understanding of the<br />
issueparticularly within the rural context.<br />
Ialso took the opportunity to attend a<br />
session with CEO of Waka KotahiNicole<br />
Rosie and her team.<br />
She spokeofthe investment profile of the<br />
NationalLand TransportPlan within<br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong>, whichincludes some early<br />
planningtoreplace the Conway River<br />
Bridge on the Inland Road which is<br />
reachingthe end of its life.<br />
The third sector meeting will take place<br />
this Thursdayand Friday, whenIattendon<br />
behalf of the district, the Regional<br />
Transport and CivilDefence Emergency<br />
Management meetings and the <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
Mayoralforum. The <strong>Canterbury</strong> Mayoral<br />
Forumisstrategically poised for Mayors as<br />
leaders to considerhow best we can<br />
leverage positive benefit for <strong>Canterbury</strong> for<br />
sustainable development, ashared<br />
prosperity, and resilient communities with<br />
aproud identity.<br />
Handbell Ringers<br />
The Richmond Handbell Ringers of Christchurch will present AChristmas Concert<br />
at the Trinity Methodist Church, High Street, Rangiora on Sunday, <strong>November</strong> 27, at<br />
2pm. Entry is a$10 donation, Under 12 free.<br />
BMX spectacular<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> BMX is hosting the <strong>Canterbury</strong> BMX championships and the<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> BMX Gutbuster on Saturday, <strong>November</strong> 26, and <strong>November</strong> 27.<br />
Over 130 riders will be competing each day. Both days feature the Superclass riders<br />
jumping the Pro Straight. Racing starts 1pm Saturday, and 11am Sunday.<br />

We were thrilled that Mayor Dan<br />
Gordon cametorecognise the impact<br />
of ourgroup, acknowledging it<br />
originatedasaSteering Group with<br />
the WaimakaririDistrict Council.<br />
In the lead up to Christmas I’m<br />
concernedabout the amount of<br />
advertising encouraging people to buy<br />
now and paylater.<br />
This must be tempting as Christmas<br />
is atime for givinggifts. Yet many<br />
people mustfind it difficult to pay<br />
back.Then there is the horrible<br />
<strong>November</strong> BlackFriday,further<br />
encouraging people to spend more on<br />
unnecessary items, adding to the<br />
burden on our environment.<br />
