REMEMBERING ERIE
Signage tells story of drowning
after heroic rescue attempt

NINETY YEARS ago, the
Monro family gifted a site to
the community to be used as a
playground in memory of their
only son who drowned trying to
save his brother-in-law.
Now the playground in
Opawa has signage detailing
whom it is named after.
Thomas Hugh Erie Monro,
known as Erie, was a former
pupil of Opawa School from
1905 to 1912.
In 1932, Erie tragically
drowned at Waikuku Beach. He
and his wife had a four-year-old
son and were expecting a baby
girl when he died.
Erie and his brother-inlaw
had swum out to sea and
became exhausted trying
to return to the shore. Erie
attempted to help his struggling
brother-in-law. A woman
noticed their plight and raised
the alarm.
While the brother-inlaw
managed to reach the
beach, Erie drowned. He
was brought ashore where a
doctor unsuccessfully tried to
resuscitate him.
At the time, 34-year-old
Erie was the manager of the
Canterbury Steam Shipping
Company.

In 1918, he had served with
the New Zealand Expeditionary
Force in World War 1. Erie
then got married to Jessie Nellie
Stewart.
Following his death, his
parents Hugh and Anne bought
the land of the original school
site and added swings, a sand
pit, a see-saw and a stone
archway, before donating it to
the city council.
Last week, a group of Te Kura
o Ōpāwaho / Opawa School
pupils were on-site for karakia
and waiata when the old sign
was replaced with a new
one containing information
about Erie.
The school had also tracked
down Erie’s two grandsons –
Peter and Bruce – and invited
them to the small celebration.
Said Peter: “It was moving
and fantastic. It was very wellrun.
The kids were lovely.”
Everything he and his brother
knew about their grandfather
was through their grandmother,
who died in 1981.
“Granny lived for a good age,
so we used to go and see her
quite a bit.
“Dad was only four when he
lost his father so he didn’t really
know him. His sister was still
in the womb. So it was quite
tragic,” Peter said.
Teacher Robyn Drummond
said pupils now know why the
playground is called the Monro
Playground.
“Two little girls said on the
way back that they really felt
connected to Erie when they
were at the playground.”
It all started when
Drummond, school librarian
Karen Gardner and jubilee
committee Kay Wenmoth
joined forces and looked into
the school history for its
150th jubilee in October.
The main purpose was to
recognise past pupils who
served in World War 1 and 2
in Honour Rolls, which are on
display at the school for the first
time in 45 years.

Bruce said.
And while he admits they may
have underestimated the cost of
building an artificial pitch, the
end result has provided hours of
entertainment for his kids.
“Obviously we were a little bit
naïve about how much it would
actually cost to do it, but they
love it because it’s just used so

“It doesn’t get bogged down,
doesn’t get muddy so the kids are

Apprentice baker’s swift rise to the top

EMILY BAILLIE was in the
third year of her apprenticeship
when she rose to become the
best young bread baker in the
country.
The 20-year-old said she
never expected to win the New
Zealand Association of Bakers
competition.
“I was in shock. I was the
youngest competitor with the
least experience and I thought
my competitors would win it. I
actually almost cried.”
Besides the title, Baillie was
also awarded a $10,000 research
grant.
This year, there were four
craft bakers and two plant bread
bakers taking part in the twoday
competition in Auckland,
which included a presentation on
a given topic, a 90-minute theory
test and a five-hour baking
session.
Each participant was required
to make a range of breads,
including two loaves of white
sandwich bread, two different
types of white loaves, four
different types of smallgoods,
two variety loaves of grain or
wholemeal bread, and four
different types of sweet bun.
Baillie said recipes for the
breads were given two months
before the competition so
participants could memorise and
use them on the day.
However, there were many
things that could affect the result
of the breads, in spite of having
the same recipe.
“My competitor had the same
recipe, but she didn’t know them.
So in one of the breads, it was
supposed to be 1.5 per cent salt
but she put 1 per cent salt. Little
things like that can really affect
the bread and how it works,”
Baillie said.
“It’s also personal skills like
how you shaped it, how you mix
it, how long you let it rest for – all
sorts of different things.”
The young baker is now
planning to represent New
Zealand at the prestigious LA
Judge Awards in 2024 – a threeday
competition recognising the
best young baking apprentices in
Australia and New Zealand.

baking in a one-year cooking
course, which then led to an
apprenticeship with a bakery in

Six months later, she moved
to Christchurch to broaden her
horizons. Since then, Baillie has
been working at the Bohemian
Bakery.
So far, the unusual working
hours have been the biggest
challenge.
“It’s not normal to wake up
and get to work at 1am. It’s
definitely a challenge to change
your body clock completely and
working at a completely different
time to everybody around you.
“It’s a bit hard to have any type
of social life,” she said.
The $10,000 award will go towards
a baking course overseas.
However, Baillie has not decided
where to go yet.
At the moment, she is looking
to specialise in pastry after
completing her qualification in
baking.

Young tennis star to play
centre-court on big stage
A CASHMERE tennis player is
one of four young athletes who
have earned the opportunity
to play centre-court in a new
tournament in the lead up to
Auckland’s ASB Classic early
next year.
Emmeline Gale, 11, will
compete in the Road to the ASB
Classic competition in January
after qualifying through regional
playoffs last week. Bishopdale
players Aliyah Daly, 11, and
Nicholas Rayner, 12, along with
Burnside Park’s Sakeri Parnell,
13, have also qualified for the
tournament.
The inaugural Road to the
ASB Classic is presented by
Jaguar and the Lavie Tennis
Academy, a performance tennis
organisation based in Auckland.
The tournament consists of
players under the age of 14 from
all areas of the country competing
in a 16-player pool, with
finals of the competition being
played before the ASB Classic
men’s singles final on Saturday
14 January.

Sebastian Lavie said the organisation
is “delighted” to give
young tennis players the opportunity
to compete on the courts
of the ASB Classic.

Alcohol ban
submissions
close in
one week
WOOLSTON residents have
seven days left to submit their
opinions on a temporary alcohol
ban in the area.
A public consultation to determine
whether residents, businesses
and community groups support
the proposal of implementing a
six-month temporary ban in the
Woolston Village area will close
on December 7. The decision on
the ban is likely to be made in the
middle of the month.
The ban prohibits public drinking
or anyone carrying open
alcohol containers in public places
within the specified ban area.
The proposed area includes
Hargood St, Glenroy St, St Johns
St, Ferry Rd, Rutherford St, along
the Heathcote River, Cumnor Tce,
Riley Cres, Laura Kent Park walkway
along the Heathcote River
and back to Hargood St.
If there is sufficient evidence to
support a ban, city council staff
will write a report recommending
the council brings in a temporary
ban.
Under the Local Government
Acts 2002, councils can impose
an alcohol ban in areas where ‘a
high level of crime or disorder’ has
worsened by alcohol consumption.

Salads with a difference
Salad season is

these cold and
warm vegetablebased
meals
Potato gnocchi with
roasted tomato sauce
Serves 4
Ingredients
Roasted tomato sauce:
1.5kg tomatoes, halved
4 each: garlic cloves, thyme
sprigs
1 sprig rosemary
2 tbsp olive oil
Flaky sea salt and freshly
ground black pepper to taste
Gnocchi:
500g floury potatoes
1 cup plain flour
1 egg, lightly beaten
1-2 tbsp olive oil
Directions
To make roasted tomato
sauce, preheat oven to 180 deg
C. Place all ingredients in a
large roasting pan.
Roast for about 45min or until
tomatoes are soft and pulpy
and starting to caramelise. Cool
a little, then puree in a blender
and pass through a sieve.
Reheat when required. Makes
about three cups.
Shredded beetroot,
onion, apples and
capsicum make a
delicious combination.
Meanwhile, prepare the gnocchi.
Peel and chop potatoes.
Boil in salted water, until soft.
Drain well and mash.
Beat flour and egg into potato
in the saucepan. Mix until
a soft dough forms. Add a little
more flour if too soft. Knead
until smooth and sticking
together. This could take up to
five minutes.
Divide dough into four. Roll
out on a lightly floured bench
to form long skinny sausages,
about 2cm in diameter.
Cut into 2cm-long pieces.
The tops can be indented with
a fork.
Bring a large saucepan of
salted water to the boil. Gently
poach gnocchi in batches until
they rise to the surface.
Drain and drizzle with a little
olive oil to prevent sticking.
Serve topped with roasted
tomato sauce.
Great finished with freshly
ground black pepper, basil and
parmesan.
Beetroot salad
Serves 4-6
Ingredients
300gm young beetroot, peeled
and shredded
½ small red onion, thinly
sliced
1 red capsicum, seeded, diced
1 apple, peeled, cored,
shredded
½ cup chopped parsley
1 tsp toasted cumin seeds
Grated orange rind and juice
½ cup toasted walnuts,
chopped
Directions
Place vegetables, apple,
parsley, cumin seeds and
orange rind in a large bowl.
Drizzle with orange juice.
Cover and refrigerate for at
least 60min. Garnish with
walnuts. Great served with
plain yoghurt.
Capsicum, kumara and
pesto salad
Serves 2
Ingredients
250gm orange kumara, peeled
and cut into 2cm cubes
4 stalks asparagus
2 yellow or red capsicums
1 tbsp olive oil
1 cup wild rocket, chopped
3 tbsp basil pesto
Flaky sea salt and freshly
ground black pepper to taste
1 medium tomato sliced
1 tbsp finely grated parmesan
cheese
Directions
Preheat oven to 200 deg C.
Boil or steam kumara until
just tender. Meanwhile, trim
asparagus and cut into 2cm
lengths.
Add to kumara during the
last two minutes of cooking.
Halve peppers lengthwise.
Remove ribs and seeds. Brush
with olive oil.
Place on a baking paper-lined
tray and bake for two to three
minutes until slightly softened.
Combine kumara, asparagus
and rocket with pesto and
seasonings. Spoon into
peppers. Top each with a slice
of tomato. Bake for about
15min. Great garnished with
small rocket or basil leaves.

It’s a great time of year in Christchurch,
especially in Banks Peninsula which is
spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor
spaces, entertainment and events.
At the end of October local police and
I facilitated a Woolston Community
Safety Meeting, which sought input from
residents regarding community safety
concerns. We heard a range of voices
and received really useful insights. Local
community board members and I will be
looking closely at the concerns raised and
working together to implement solutions.
The feedback we received from locals will
be instrumental in this process, so I’d like
to send a heartfelt thank you to all those
who attended and contributed.
If you want to embrace community spirit
over the festive season (or any other
time) in a rewarding and productive
environment, Hōhepa Canterbury
always welcomes volunteers! Similarly,
the Woolston Development Project has
a wonderful selection of community
services, initiatives and activities to get
involved in.
In Wellington, Parliament reached an
important milestone with the swearing
in of Labour’s newest MP, Soraya Peke-
Mason. Women now account for 50% of
the MPs serving New Zealanders. Banks
Peninsula led the way in 1933, electing
Elizabeth McCombs to represent Lyttelton
(as the electorate was then known).
McCombs was New Zealand’s first female
MP. It’s wonderful that in 2022 we have
taken such a significant step towards
true equality and representation in
New Zealand.
I’ve also been reflecting, as we approach
the end of the year, on the challenges we’ve
faced as a nation and the opportunities
ahead. The Labour government continues
to navigate the country through a period
of significant global uncertainty and we’ve
made progress on important issues like
child poverty, social housing and climate
change. Two more recent examples of
Labour initiatives include the $190 million
childcare assistance subsidy package and
the $540 million in infrastructure funding
to facilitate the construction of more than
16,000 new homes across the country,
including here in Christchurch.
My colleagues and I are determined
to continue to find solutions to current
challenges and implement more
measures that will improve the lives
of all New Zealanders. This will be our
focus for 2023 and beyond.
Enjoy your end of year celebrations and
the holiday season. It’s a wonderful time
of year and there’s no better place to
spend it than Banks Peninsula.

Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up

local library and label with age and

or croquet.
7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional
‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood,
and give a book as a gift on Christmas
Eve each year – don’t forget to write
inside the cover who it’s from and the
date.
8. Make a list of must see Christmas movies
to watch a week before Christmas day
and tick off the ones you’ve watched.
Don’t forget the popcorn and hot
chocolate or nibbles and wine.
9. Make and give a handmade ornament
as a gift each year – the lucky receiver’s
Christmas tree will be covered with
beautiful, handmade memories.
10. Make homemade hot chocolate on
Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning
to drink while the presents are being
opened – decorate with whipped cream,
grated chocolate, marshmallows, or
crushed candy canes.

Deck the halls
Christmas isn’t Christmas without a decoration or two around the home.
Whether its outdoor lights with a waving
Santa or just draping tinsel across your
mantelpiece, there are many ways to celebrate
the festive season in your home.
Go natural
Driftwood painted white with LED lights
wrapped around, or pine cones with a
touch of silver spray paint, make beautiful
natural additions to the home at this time
of year. If you have a tree branch around
the home, why not cut it up into discs and
spray paint white stars and reindeer on the
disc. Drill a hole in the top and thread some
gardeners string through the hole and you
have an instant decoration to hang on the
tree or somewhere around the home. Cover
polystyrene balls in ripped linen, hessian and
cotton strips. These can either be hung up or
a number placed in a bowl on the table.
Tinsel town
Many love the glitter and sparkle that
tinsel brings but how about using it in
different ways. A three-tiered cake plate with
tinsel laid on each plate with baubles then
placed on top, can look really impressive
as a centrepiece for the table. Make your
own wreath by wrapping tinsel around and
around a polystyrene circle. Hang just as it
is, or hot glue gun baubles on to create extra
wow.
Table setting
Sometimes the simplest decorations on
the table can look the most stunning. A
beautiful napkin rolled up with a piece of
red and white ribbon, or rosemary wreath
looks amazing. Why not place a hessian
runner down the middle of the table and add
greenery and candles in jars on top to create
a wonderful centrepiece.
If you have a children’s eating table, why
not put a long piece of brown paper as a table
cloth. Draw large circles where the plates
can go and write Christmas questions beside
each plate outline. A little bottle with a red
and white paper straw is great too. Put a jar
of red and green crayons on the table. When
the kids are finished their dinner, they can
play noughts and crosses or hangman or just
draw pictures.
