FEATURE Marketing WHY YOU SHOULD BE AN ONLINE EXPERT In this day and age, most people turn to the internet for information or advice. So it makes sense to not only be visible but to be seen as an expert in your field. Consultant John Hunter explains how you can find own your niche… Imagine you want information on tackle, advice on a specific fishing technique or even tips on how to catch that next big fish. Where do you turn for that helpful data? The internet of course and, more often than not, good old Google. And if you are doing it then you can bet your bottom dollar your customers are too. So, while they are searching, wouldn’t it be great – and help boost your sales – if they came across you, your brand or your store? Even better – how about if they not only saw what you do but started reading about it and gleaning knowledge as a direct result? Now you have become the expert and, because they have gathered that information from you, they are more likely to trust your brand or retail outlet as something that knows what it’s talking about it. TALKING THE TALK Of course, this doesn’t just happen by accident. You need to engineer this scenario but it’s easier than you think and could keep you a step ahead of your competitors, unless they are reading this column too, of course! Step one – naturally enough – is to ensure you actually have a decent amount of 40 www.tackletradeworld.com knowledge of the topic in question. So if you are a competent lure angler, then read round the subject and stay up to date with the latest trends and product lines. If you’re into carp, then knowing the must-have or fashionable brands, favoured setups, winning baits and more are all useful pieces of information. If you know how to catch a certain species of fish and you or one of your team can offer examples of how you have done it, then that will stand you in good stead. CONTENT CREATION Now you can start demonstrating that knowledge. Write blog posts for your website and research how to use keywords to attract further attention, direct relevant traffic and potentially boost your ranking in search engines. Post your latest captures and a few hints or tips about how you achieved them on your social media feeds. Again, hashtags and keywords are crucial to reaching a larger audience as people will find you through them. But don’t make it hard sell – most of your readers are looking for help. But do drop in some suggested tackle or bait to make their choice easier. ANSWER THE QUESTION Get involved with forums, follow key social media groups and pages and monitor them for questions or relevant comments. Responding with a helpful answer from time to time will enhance your reputation as an expert to be trusted and, when they need to find the right gear, lure or bait, they will come looking for yours.
