What a year it has been for the fishing tackle trade around the world! We’ve faced some major challenges during 2022, from increased material and shipping costs, manufacturing issues (all a hangover from Covid-19), a fall in angler numbers after some impressive peaks (again due to Covid-19) and even natural disasters, with hurricanes affecting our friends in the southern US and in the Far East. That said, we have also seen some real positives – the return of trade and consumer shows (well, most of them anyway) has been a major shot in the arm for us all; whether that’s the chance to do business face-to-face once more or even just to catch up with old friends and acquaintances. From TTW ’s point of view, it seems to have gone at breakneck speed as we have made up for lost time and travelled extensively to meet up with customers and attend trade events around the world. But last year was a whirlwind for the trade in lots of other ways too, not the least the number of seismic changes within the industry that have taken place. We have seen Pure Fishing acquire another major business in the shape of Svendsen Sport – adding more brands to its already extensive portfolio. We have watched as Orvis closed down its UK retail outlets then marvelled at Simms buying a major fly tackle retailer before being purchased itself by Vista Outdoor. There have been some changes at the top of key businesses, too, with the latest being the news that Rapala VMC CEO and president Nicolas Warchalowski is moving on – the search for his successor is already under way and may even have been completed by the time you read this. 3,511 6,466 While Patagonia’s founder even gave his own company away! So what does 2023 have in store? Will we see another fast-paced year? I’d like to think the industry will draw its breath and stabilise a little but, this being the tackle trade, I really can’t see that happening. There are rumours that Pure Fishing hasn’t finished with the acquisition trail just yet, there are still some question marks over a couple of key trade events – with breaks and changes, it will be interesting to see how EFTTEX in Budapest fares and then there’s The Confluence replacing the old IFTD Show. What will that look like? Senior figures at the big corporates will also be looking hard at the numbers their CEOs and management are submitting. While Covid-19 continues to affect a significant amount of manufacturing in China with sudden lockdowns, we have seen a drop in angler numbers in many markets, with a potential reduction in sales The economic climate globally is challenging to say the least – will we take a hit as consumers face rising energy and food bills, with less spare cash to splash on their hobby? One thing you CAN rely on, though, is Tackle Trade World.
