ADAM HAILS WORLD CUP EXPERIENCE
Goalkeeper Adam Davies
described his pride at being part
of the Wales squad which
recently played in their first World Cup for
64 years.
Whilst he was understudy to Wayne
Hennessey and Danny Ward, the ex-
Barnsley stopper had a first hand
view on an historic tournament for his
country, taking in some truly memorable
atmospheric moments in the Qatar heat.
Despite going out in the group stages
following defeats to Iran and England,
Adam says just being at the finals was
a truly historic experience for everyone
involved.

He told SUTV: “The atmosphere at the
games was incredible. I was so proud
to be part of that, obviously the results
didn’t go the way we wanted but to share
the experience with the team and staff,
it was brilliant. We had family there too;
it was so nice to have them in the stands
watching.
“I just tried to soak it all in. The red
wall, the fans that travelled in such big
numbers. A lot of the games did feel like
an away game because obviously we are
such a small country. Playing USA and
England, they bring a lot of fans, but our
supporters were just fantastic. Probably
the best moment for me was after the
England game when we went over to
clap the fans, and they were singing the
national anthem back to us. It was a real
nice moment.”
When Hennessey saw red in the Iran
fixture, suddenly Adam was promoted to
be understudy for Ward, and he admitted
he suddenly felt an opportunity might
have come his way to get out onto the
pitch himself.
He continued: “I had to be ready,
and it gives you that little bit of extra
edge when you are on the bench and
knowing an opportunity could come
along. It didn’t happen, but it was still just
fantastic to be part of the squad.
“We have the qualifiers for the Euros
coming up in March, and the focus is
now on that from an international point
of view. For me personally though now,
I want to help get Sheffield United to the
Premier League.”
