An Orthodox Catechism
1 Rom. 3:20. Therefore by the deeds of the law no
flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the
knowledge of sin. 7:5. For when we were in the flesh,
the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were
at work in our members to bear fruit to death. 13. Has
then what is good become death to me? Certainly not!
But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in
me through what is good, so that sin through the
commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 5:20.
Moreover the law entered that the offense might
abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much
more.
Q. 4: What doth the law of God require of us?
A. That which doth Christ summarily teach us,
Matt. 22:37-40. Thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul,
and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. 1
This is the first and the great commandment,
and the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love
thy neighbor as thyself. On these two
commandments hang the whole Law and the
prophets.
1 Luke 10:27. So he answered and said, " 'You shall
love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your
soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,' and
'your neighbor as yourself.' "
