King Harry Ferry Co
Floating Bridge | Feock - Philleigh
B3289
How does it work?
The floating bridge navigates the 22m deep,
300m stretch of the River Fal by pulling itself
back and forth along the 2 chains which are
anchored on either side of the river. Each chain
weighs over 6 tonnes and has to be replaced
every 12-14 months because of the wear that is
sustained by operating up to 80 crossings a day,
364 days a year.
The chains enter the ferry over guide wheels
then travel through a chute to the wheel room.
From here the chains run under pressure guide
wheels and over the main drive wheels which
are big 2m diameter cogs that grip the chains,
these in turn are driven by hydraulic motors
powered by one of the 3 efficient Scania diesel
engines. The chains then pass under more
pressure guide wheels, back out of the chain

Think green
In 2022, the King Harry Ferry will be offsetting
its carbon emissions by planting small trees and
plants around the local area. Designed and built
in 2006, the current ferry was built with the aim
of minimising its impact on the environment.
This included using the most quiet and efficient
engines that were available and installing a state
of the art sewage treatment plant.
Each year the King Harry Ferry saves
5 million car miles
1.7 million Kg of CO2
