Heritage Adventures
The Fal is one of Britain’s finest estuaries, both in
terms of its natural and its historic environment.
A drowned river valley which began forming 2.5 million
years ago, it now consists of a deep tidal basin opening
into Falmouth Bay and fed by numerous rivers and
creeks, with a tidal limit extending 18 km inland and a
shoreline of 115 km.
As a result of people having lived around the estuary and
sailed on its waters since prehistoric times, there are
numerous archaeological sites and historic buildings
lining its shore. Iron Age cliff castles, medieval churches,
post-medieval forts, ports, mines and stately homes
provide endless opportunity for delving into the past.
So, jump on a ferry, set off on foot, or combine the two,
and start exploring the Fal’s fascinating heritage!
